This is a very interesting project. Nine authors. Nine women. Nine crime stories. This is an anthology dedicated to cozy mysteries. From grand larceny to murder, there is a little of everything here and I enjoyed it all. And the settings are just as varied as the crimes and perpetrators, transporting the reader from busy coastal villages, across homely suburbs, to college towns so, whatever your taste, you’ll find something to like here.
Also, if you, like me, are one of those people who love to read crime but who not always want to commit a week’s reading to unravel the mystery at hand, this series is for you. A few hours and you’ll go from beginning to end of one of these whodunit tales.
Interestingly, I discovered that some of the characters come from previous novels/series written by the authors, hence this stray stories serve as corollary to such series. Other stories, however, introduced characters in a way that indicates these are their origin stories, much like those of superheroes, and that they soon will have their own series, or you can take these stories as prequels.
While I enjoyed all the stories I nonetheless have my favorites. Among them is Buried by the Beach, by Ellen Jacobson. Why did I like it so much? Well it’s hard not to like a redemption mystery that is shrouded in comedy and has a no-nonsense lady as protagonist.
I also particularly enjoyed When The Clock Chimes Two, by Adriana Licio. Is the voice that sets this tale apart. That, and a protagonist that feels completely out of her element within a crime tale. Add that to an exciting and satisfactory conclusion and you have a great mystery short story.
Now, my favorites are the result of personal preferences and not of difference in quality because, in that sense, this anthology is an even one.
Nine novella e-book stories by nine individual authors. Each story is different leading to a series by that author. As with multiple story books 📚 some are are more interesting than others but that is normal.
I would recommend this novellas and authors to 👍 readers looking for new authors of romantic family and friends relationships action adventure novels 👍🔰. 2023 👒😀😡💘🏡
Mystery Follows Her is an Anthology by eight Authors. I highly recommend the short stories written by Ellen Jacobson, Adriana Licio, and Angela K. Ryan—three authors that I am familiar with and enjoyed reading these short stories in their cozy mystery series.
The other five authors were unfamiliar to me, and their writing styles did not interest me.
I honestly reviewed a digital copy provided by NetGalley and Books Go Social. Thank you.
A collection of short mystery stories to not only entertain you, but introduce you to new authors and series that you may not be familiar with. I found several new to me characters among the stories presented here that I am excited about following up and reading more about. I love that it gives you a taste of multiple settings, a variety of main characters and interesting mysteries to enjoy! While I enjoy a good murder mystery, it was fun to read mysteries that didn't revolve around a murder case in each story. Don't worry though if you like a good murder mystery, this collection has that for you as well! Fair warning though, this collection will have your TBR pile growing as you'll find some new authors to seek out and binge read!
And readers will follow the mystery... Great short reads that make you want to read more! Some of these stories are meant as an introduction to the series. Some are meant as a bonus to an ongoing series. Either way, they are short reads which give you a chance to try out some (new) authors. I hadn't read anything by any of these writers, but I really want to read more! I loved all the stories, most enough to warrant giving the whole book 5 stars. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a great collection to grab. I love short story collections, but find when a book has numerous authors the rating is harder. I hate to single out writers. Let's just say this is a great collection and one to have handy for a lazy day at the beach to a night snuggled up in front of a cozy fire. All in all a mystery lover's dream!
3 1/2 stars. This is a series of cozy mystery novellas and short stories by talented but perhaps not as well- known authors. It is a good variety of locations, types of crimes, origin stories and continuing adventures. In other words, a little bit for pretty much everyone. I enjoyed the variety and have started to read some other stories by these authors.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A fun group of cozy mystery stories with female protagonists, set around the world. One or two could have used some tight editing or a good beta reader, but I also found some new authors out of this. Favorites were written by Beate Boeker, Adriana Licio, and Vikki Walton. An enjoyable read!
This was a fun read I discovered because of an author I follow who contributed one of the stories in this collection. It was nice to get a sampling of other cozy mysteries from authors new to me.
While Buried by the Beach was the story that had me laughing the most it was not my favorite, but it came in a close second. Closed out was the story that really pulled me in. It started out kind of sad and then frustrating as the mystery unfolded. It was a delightful roller-coaster ride getting to the conclusion.
The Mystery of the Stolen Ring came in third and also brought in the laughs, while Treasures in Heaven almost had me in tears- in a good way. When the Clock Chimes Two also made me laugh as did others. I don’t know if I need to keep going listing and ranking every story in the book because, honestly, there wasn’t a single story I didn’t like.
I think my only complaint is that, for me, the first story “Thanksgiving and Theft” should have appeared later in the collection. I don’t have a clear reason as to why but I think it’s because while some of the stories deal with death, this one also deals with loss. It may have been too sad of a start for me, though the story ended on a high note.
In any case, I was happy to discover these lovely stories and their authors.
This was an interesting selection of authors with a sample of stories from each author and then a short biography on each author and their website url to find them. Some of the stories were very better than others but mainly a matter of taste I think. There were a variety and great for short reading periods.
This is a collection of nine short stories by a variety of mystery writers and covers a whole multitude of scenarios. The stories take you around the world and involve a crew of female sleuths in unexpected positions, often through accidents. Some may have done a bit of amateur sleuthing in the past, but others are put into the position by events that happen to them. One story has a woman being mugged in a local park, just as two friends are walking by and they try to stop the mugger, but fail. Another has a woman who ups sticks and moves to Hawaii on a whim, but has nearly everything stolen from her as she takes a dip in the ocean, leaving her valuables unattended on the beach.
Two cases of rings being stolen, with very different main characters involved, one with the wrong person being accused of the theft, whilst the other is aided by a straight laced character you would never presume would get involved as they do. A woman approaching sixty and having lost her husband, ends up making a bucket list of what she really wants to do and travelling is her main target. She ends up pet sitting and house sitting, giving her the chance to meet different people all around the world and for free! But there is much more going on than a simple pet sitting job.
A wonderful mix of stories, with women finding justice and lost items being reunited with their rightful owners, whether that be a ring, a handbag or a prize necklace. Some of the villains of the stories get their comeuppance in unexpected manners with the women ruling the roost in the end. A satisfying series of cozy mysteries with female characters who may not start out strong, but end up that way. It gives you a taste of a variety of authors and hopefully, some news one to follow up on. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
We have some wonderful cozy mysteries that span dangerous city streets, quaint villages, and locales across the globe as we follow along with the feisty female sleuths of various ages as they solve crimes. You’ll love this collection of intriguing and light-hearted stories. Included are the following titles:
o Catch a mugger in THANKSGIVING AND THEFT by Dianne Ascroft o Dig up hidden treasure in BURIED BY THE BEACH by Ellen Jacobson o Open up a case in CLOSED OUT by Tamara Woods o Pray for justice in TREASURES IN HEAVEN by Sarah Biglow o Escape the blame in RING GONE ‘ROUND THE ROSES by Aubrey Elle o Try on some clues in THE MYSTERY OF THE STOLEN RING by Beate Boeker o Search for the suspect in WHEN THE CLOCK CHIMES TWO by Adriana Licio o Catch the culprit in HIJINKS IN AJIJIC by Vikki Walton o Locate the missing loot in VENDORS AND VILLAINS by Angela K. Ryan
This intriguing set of cozy mysteries provides strong story lines that hold the reader’s complete attention as they move through the action and build up suspense. The characters we meet are well developed, interesting and likable. The combination of suspense, intrigue, and (my favorite) humor, will lead the reader to a satisfying solution to the crime. If you love cozy mysteries, this is a great choice to add to your library after you have devoured and enjoyed each of them!
As is always the case with a collection, you are bound to love some more than others. They were all quite enjoyable, and well-written, and I wholeheartedly recommend all the stories in this anthology! But there were a few that stood out to me for all the right reasons, a few that really excelled in my opinion:
Dianne Ascroft - Thanksgiving and Theft - I saw another reviewer mentioning the backstory was a bit on the heavy side. And yes, it was heavy, but not depressingly so. It didn’t make me sad as well. It was a suspenseful, well-written story. I enjoyed it!
Beate Boeker - The Mystery of the Stolen Ring - I loved Tonia and dog Oopsy! An endearing duo! I also loved Carlina, who has good sense combined with friendliness: my kinda girl! This story had a twist I didn’t expect, and I loved that. And it was well-developed which is quite the feat for a short. Really excellent! I wish I could give more than 5 stars! A 5 plus! It had a real summery feel, a vacation vibe. Another well-written and easy-to-read story. Original, surprsising, and entertaining!
Adriana Licio - When the Clock Chimes Two - Zoe is me!!! I could SO relate! I’m all about kindness, but that also means that some people think they can walk all over me. Learning to say no is hard! Sometimes it is the best choice, though. But for Zoe, it has unexpected consequences… Excellent and exciting story! Very empowering. There are three POV’s in this short, and that seems like a lot, but the author make that work very skilfully.
Conclusion: This is an excellent collection, and you can’t go wrong, really!!! I discovered some new-to-me authors, who I will most definitely be reading more of! The stories are mostly part of ongoing series, but I had no problem at all reading them as standalones. Recommend!
A collection of cozy mystery short stories from various authors. A woman tries to catch a mugger who stole a brooch from a dear old lady in one story. Another story sees a disgraced woman leaving her home town and moving to Hawaii, only to have her backpack stolen from the beach. While elsewhere, an army chaplain has to figure out who shot a Private and why.
Okay, let me be honest here.
I’m going to start by admitting that I didn’t finish this whole book. I got about halfway through and had to give up. I hate not finishing books, especially when I’m supposed to be reviewing them, but I just couldn’t keep going with this one.
I found that a lot of the stories were awkward to read. The writing felt very forced at times, and a lot of the dialogue was unrealistic and generally clumsy. Some stories were better than others when it comes to the writing so I won’t say they were all bad. I liked 'Treasures in Heaven' by Sarah Biglow.
Maybe I might have enjoyed these short stories more if I was familiar with the series that they were based on. The authors sometimes mentioned things that happened in other stories from their series that made it a bit confusing for those of us who haven’t read them. One story, in particular, mentions a kidnapping a couple of times that sounds like it was quite a traumatic experience for the character, but it’s glossed over like it’s nothing. I can only assume this is from a different story in the series, but would have liked a bit more context when it was mentioned.
Why did I give it the star rating I did?
It doesn’t happen very often, but when I don’t finish a book I tend to give it one star. This is normally because it takes a lot for me not to finish a book. I have to really not be enjoying it to the point that I dread picking it up.
That’s sort of what it was like for Mystery Follows Her, but I wasn’t completely dreading reading it. I’d just find myself avoiding it, doing other things instead of reading, but I didn’t like that either. I like reading, and if a book makes me actively not want to read then there’s something wrong.
But I gave this book two stars instead of just one because one of the reasons I wasn’t enjoying it was more to do with my own opinion than anything else. I love a cosy mystery, but I’m more specific than I realised about what I look for in one. I want a small-town murder. Think 'Midsomer Murders': a little town where someone gets murdered at the village fete after the jam-making competition. These stories weren’t that. At all. In fact, of the few that I read, there were no murders whatsoever. Just small crimes like theft and muggings.
Now, I realise I shouldn’t be complaining about a lack of murder. But if you’ve read this blog at all then you’ll know I love a murder-mystery. They’re my favourite kind of books. And that’s what I look for in a cosy mystery. This book didn’t give me that so I didn’t enjoy it. But I’m also aware that other people would be fine with no murder and might enjoy the mysteries of the smaller crimes. So I added an extra star to my rating.
If I was to recommend any stories from this collection they would be 'Treasures in Heaven' by Sarah Biglow and 'Closed Out' by Tamara Woods. Other than those I didn’t enjoy the other ones I managed to read. But maybe you will. So if you like a cosy mystery that doesn’t involve anyone actually dying then give it a go and tell me what you think. Maybe you can convince me I’m wrong.
I have had a love-hate relationship with both short stories as well as cozy mysteries featuring enterprising young women. With this book, I wanted to test my interest in both. I recently loved a collection of historical cozies so I thought I might enjoy this one too. Debating and procrastinating this review held up a lot of other reviews since I wanted to individually elaborate on what worked for me and what didn't. This can clarify to anyone interested in picking it up if they would find it more like something they'd enjoy. This is a collection of stories by multiple authors, some of whom have working series' with the protagonists mentioned in the chapters. Overall I must say that it was an okay read for me, I am sure it would be much better for people who like more such mysteries than I.
ThanksGiving and Theft - Dianne Ascroft A simple and straightforward tale of a mugging and the unofficial investigation that follows. Solved more by circumstances than by the protagonists Many obvious signs were ignored during the narrative, which always bothers me.
Buried by the Beach - Ellen Jacobson I found it hard to be invested Prolonged treasure hunt The twist was partially entertaining.
Closed out - Tamara Woods Good start to a new series, I would probably like the full-length ones more than I liked this one. There was a toilet scene which revealed information to our lead but seemed random given what we find out later about the circumstances. Other than the loophole mentioned above, it was a decent story.
Treasures in heaven - Sarah Biglow Intrigue in an American army settlement in the middle east Straightforward without any twists. The pacing was fast, and I could read it all quite quickly.
Ring Gone 'round the roses - Aubrey Elle Liked the writing style The answer was evident since the number of people involved and the geographical area of the story is limited I would, if given a chance, pick up the rest of the series.
Mystery of the stolen Ring - Beate Boeker Location and the narrative style was unique. It was a dual narration with two characters alternating. It was not an incredibly convoluted story but with likeable characters making it an easy read.
When the clock chimes two - Adriana Licio Plot-wise the best of the lot, I did not see the twists coming. For once, I did not want the extra stage setting with the perfumery. I would have liked to jump blind into a once meek woman suddenly being accused of murder.
Hijinks in Ajijic - Vikki Walton Dog sitting endeavour gone wrong, the exact issue is hard to grasp at first. I found the loophole quite early on but was willing to watch it play out. Some extra information weeded out might have actually helped it be more intriguing.
Vendors and Villains - Angela K.Ryan Missing necklace from a fair trade stand The investigations did not interest me, but the final revelation was welcome.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.
** ARC provided by Netgalley and BooksGoSocial in exchange for an honest review **
3.5*
9 mystery authors, grouped together into one book with 9 different stories that don't link with one another. They were all unknown to me and that is always nice when it's a still new genre for someone to discover authors and their way of thinking and writing. I definitely loved the idea between this anthology for sure.
Except, I wasn't into any of the stories the way I've been into other books in the genre for some reason. Don't get me wrong, I loved the ideas, loved the writing and the mysteries behind every story. There was just something that didn't keep my attention towards this and I gravitated towards other books instead of this. It's kinda funny considering these were shorter. Maybe I didn't get enough to get attached to the town and the people or there was something else.
I'm really glad I got to try this and I wouldn't say no to reading another book like this with shorter stories. You never know what you'll truly get, right?
I can't really pinpoint anything more aside that I am going to be looking into other works by each of these authors and most likely will get a better feel for each.
The stories were enjoyable for sure, it might just have been me. 2020 has been very weird overall and my reading has been affected as well. I won't give up on these authors and type of book though.
This is a light-hearted collection of cozy mysteries which made me laugh and kept me guessing. I was drawn to this book because I'm a fan of one of the authors, and now I find myself wanting several new series of cozy mysteries from these wonderful authors I've been introduced to! What's even more thrilling is that these tales of women sleuths take us around the world. It was my own little vacation of whodunnits since I can't fly around the globe myself.
I love a good cozy mystery, especially ones featuring female sleuths—as they are all in this book—but I usually am not a fan of short-form mysteries. But I was intrigued enough by this set of authors and the story premises to give this a go. Unfortunately, I did find that many of these stories did suffer from the typical issues in short-story- and novella-length mysteries: info dumping to get the reader up to speed quickly (particularly at the start of the story), not enough suspects, not enough time to build suspense, not enough misdirection or red herrings, and not every mysterious aspect given a proper explanation. That's not to say that some stories weren't good or that these stories had these not-so-good elements. But enough had problems to make the entire experience less enjoyable than it should have been. Mystery appears to be the popular genre that suffers the most when being told in the short form. Some stories, too, had issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage, enough to be distracting at times. I'll admit, though, that I did find some new authors to check out; hopefully, they will have some longer works for me to enjoy! So, in the end, the collection did what it was supposed to do: show readers new authors that they might like.
I received a free copy of this collection, but that did not affect my review.
"Mystery Followers Her" is a book of short stories that each feature a female sleuth who uses her wisdom, moxie and curiosity to solve a mystery. Most of the stories introduce a full-length novel by the respective authors. All the stories are fairly clean and fun to read. My only improvement would be a few tweaks to flow. Here's how I rated each story. 1. 2 stars - Catch a mugger in THANKSGIVING AND THEFT by Dianne Ascroft 2. 4 stars - Dig up hidden treasure in BURIED BY THE BEACH by Ellen Jacobson 3. 2 stars - Open up a case in CLOSED OUT by Tamara Woods 4. 5 stars - Pray for justice in TREASURES IN HEAVEN by Sarah Biglow 5. 2 stars - Escape the blame in RING GONE ‘ROUND THE ROSES by Aubrey Elle 6. 3 stars - Try on some clues in THE MYSTERY OF THE STOLEN RING by Beate Boeker 7. 3 stars - Search for the suspect in WHEN THE CLOCK CHIMES TWO by Adriana Licio 8. 4 stars - Catch the culprit in HIJINKS IN AJIJIC by Vikki Walton 9. 4 stars - Locate the missing loot in VENDORS AND VILLAINS by Angela K. Ryan
I decided to make a change in my habit of how I select novels to read this year and it's been a delightful experience. In the past I've rarely read many multi-author story collections regardless of genre. By "changing it up" I've read some wonderful stories and added more authors to my tbr list. One of the surprises of this collection is that not all of the inquiries were murder investigations which automatically brought a different spin. The cover art adds to the charm of this selection too!
The only author I was previously familiar with was Vikki Walton as I had read "Deception in Devon," Viviane's Adventures Mystery, Book 1. The story in the collection is the prequel to Vivianne's housesitting / pet sitting assignment in London. As her preceding assignment was mentioned briefly in the 1st book it was quite fun to read about that adventure.
Now I have 8 more authors to add to my tbr list and I can't wait to explore all of the series each one has written. Now if I could only find more hours to read. ;)
This is a fine collection of cozy mysteries sure to entertain and take you to many places. Short and easy to read, a most enjoyable way to spend a few hours.
Thanksgiving and Theft - Dianne Ascroft Learning to deal with her anxiety allows her to help someone else.
Buried by the Beach - Ellen Jacobson A theft that is good?
Closed Out - Tamara Woods Help comes in all shapes and sizes.
Treasures in Heaven - Sarah Biglow Blood or not, we all have each other’s backs - no matter what!
Ring Gone ‘Round the Roses - Aubrey Elle Who really is the thief?
The Mystery of the Stolen Ring - Beate Boeker Not really stolen??
When the Clock Chimes Two - Adriana Licio A doormat can turn into something better.
Hijinks in Ajijic - Vikki Walton A con to catch a con.
Vendors and Villains - Angela K. Ryan Something for the children.
Ai received an ARC of this multi author collection through BookFunnel. This review was in no way solicited.
This is an enjoyable collection of short cosies. Generally with an anthology, there's unevenness in quality and appeal of the contents. Here, however, we have a well-matched array of writing. Every story is absorbing and interesting. Packing a cosy mystery into a small space isn't easy as this deceptively simple-appearing genre has certain demands that all need to be fulfilled. A cosy is a complicated thing! The authors all succeed in creating empathetic protagonists, unlikeable victims on the whole, red herrings and a satisfying denouement. The anthology is made all the more rich by the very different heroines and heroes we encounter, the diversity of setting and atmosphere and the individual writing styles that reflect the culture and personality of each author. This book is not only entertaining, it's also a nice introduction to authors you may never have come across before. It's always great to discover another talented writer.
This is an anthology of 9 short stories by a variety of authors. • Catch a mugger in THANKSGIVING AND THEFT by Dianne Ascroft. • Dig up hidden treasure in BURIED BY THE BEACH by Ellen Jacobson • Open up a case in CLOSED OUT by Tamara Woods • Pray for justice in TREASURES IN HEAVEN by Sarah Biglow • Escape the blame in RING GONE ‘ROUND THE ROSES by Aubrey Elle. • Try on some clues in THE MYSTERY OF THE STOLEN RING by Beate Boeker • Search for the suspect in WHEN THE CLOCK CHIMES TWO by Adriana Licio • Catch the culprit in HIJINKS IN AJIJIC by Vikki Walton • Locate the missing loot in VENDORS AND VILLAINS by Angela K. Ryan I was unfamiliar with most of them but I'm assuming that they are all series characters and the perfect introduction to their books. I plan on researching several of them. Nice length and all well written. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Very fun. Mystery Follows Her was a charming and cozy chance to meet a few new authors. A few were familiar but many in this group were new to me. I enjoyed the short mysteries. They seemed to be just the right length for quiet evening read. Each one is well written and a lot of them are prequels to series so the reader gets an introduction to the series. I loved the cover and I felt that it depicted the collection well and intrigued me to turn the pages.
Can I pick a favorite? That is hard for me so I'll just say I enjoyed every story and every moment of reading. I do have several new additions to my TBR pile.
If you love good cozy mysteries buy this one or put on your wish list. This collection is a great gift for a Cozy reader or someone you want to introduce to the world of Cozy.
Mystery Follows Her : A Multi-Author Cozy Mystery Collection by Dianne Ascroft, Ellen Jacobsen, Tamara Woods, Sarah Bigeow, Aubrey Elle, Beate Boeker, Adriana Licio, Vikki Walton and Angela K. Ryan
This anthology of cozy mysteries featuring strong, capable women who can't resist getting to the heart of a mystery was a delight for me to read. Each and every story was an excellent example of a cozy mystery and had interesting characters, good plots and smart, sometimes tricky, conclusions. I can honestly say that I will be checking out the books of every author in this anthology -well, those I don't already read – to grow my library with well-written mysteries and compelling characters. I believe you would also like these stories and the authors who wrote them. Enjoy!

This book is a collection of nine short stories by a variety of mystery writers and covers a whole multitude of scenarios. The stories span across the globe, dangerous city streets, and quaint villages.
This compelling set of cozy mysteries provides interesting storylines that hold the reader's attention. The characters are well described and easy to relate to. I enjoyed reading this fine collection of stories as they were entertaining and at times hilarious.
The combination of expectancy, intrigue, and at times comedy leads the reader to the solution of the crime.
If u love cozy mysteries, this will be a good addition to your collection.
I struggled to get through this collection. I found the first story rather depressing so I skipped to the second one. The beginning of that one was so slapstick foolish that I quit reading it as well. I was on vacation and wanted to read something I thoroughly enjoyed vs. trudging through mediocrity. I let my mom borrow it and she said she really liked it. So, decided to give it another try. I forced myself to finish the first two and then made my way through the rest. A few were decent but most were a bit clumsy with stilted dialogue and over simplified plots. I was actually relieved to finish it.
I enjoyed this book of cozy mysteries. It was a collection by various authors. The book has a little bit of everything. Muggings, Murders, Robbery, Theft, Humor and a lot of happy endings.
I enjoyed getting a taste of writing from so many different authors. It gave me some new favorites. Since there are several different stories you can read them in different settings as you have time.
It was the perfect book following a bit of heavy reading. It really lifts your spirits. I would recommend this book.
Thanks to all the different authors, BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for allowing me to read a copy for an honest review.
This is a delightful read consisting of 9 short stories with international settings and vastly different protagonists from a chaplain to a pet-sitter. While I enjoyed every one of them, Vikki Walton's Hijinks in Ajijic was the most enjoyable for me. Perhaps because Vivianne is turning 60 but still up for adventure I related more to her. The idea of using a position as a house/pet sitter to see the world is intriguing. The characters were a hoot and the story line kept me going.
All of these authors are new to me and I definitely intend to read more of the their works.
