Angel has been orphaned and forced to move to live with his uncle. He had been a standout athlete in Illinois and is having trouble finding a fit in Pecos. Angel had played soccer, which isn’t even an option in this football-crazed, west-Texas town. He finds a job in a Dairy Queen, but mainly due to a misunderstanding his life goes off in a new direction.
For me the story was a bit MEH. It was not a bad story but it was a bit rushed. The prolog was a bit disconcerting. It was almost like it was attached to the wrong book. There was on short reference to it made later in the story and that was it. I kind of reminded me of the way Stephen King spend two or three chapters building a character only to kill them off for real no reason them to bring in another character to kill off and that character does nothing for the story. All in all it is not a bad story just rushed.
I love Angela's writing, but a transgender girl awakening in Pecos Texas had me cringing for half the book. Fortunately, the story turned into something delightful, and a wonderful read I would recommend to any reader.
