He worked for ITC Limited for 17 years, leaving in 1995 as Managing Director of one of the ITC group companies, based in Singapore. Thereafter he spent 8 years in the aerospace industry, four years each with Lockheed Martin and Hughes, running their satellite systems in Asia.
He founded Guardian Pharmacy in India in 2003 and grew it to the second largest pharmacy chain in India with over 200 stores. He also brought in GNC as a nutraceutical partner to India. Ashutosh exited from the company he founded in August 2016.
He is a certified Executive Coach and coaches / mentors several CEO’s in India on business matters, governance, strategic planning, personal accountability, people and culture issues.
He has served as a director of the GAVI Vaccine Alliance (www.gavi.org), headquartered in Geneva, for 8 years. He has also served as the Chairman of “Bizdome”, a Startup Incubator of the Indian Institute of Management, Rohtak, and Member of the Advisory Council of the Centre for Policy Research.
In January 1995, he was recognized as a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum, Switzerland. He is an active member of the Young Presidents’ Organization and is the current Chairman for YPO Gold, South Asia. He is also a Charter Member of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE).
He has written 6 highly acclaimed best sellers titled “The Buck Stops Here – my journey from manager to entrepreneur”; “The Corner Office"; "Reinvent Reboot Rewire. Managing Retirement in the 21st Century"; "The Buck Stops Here - Learnings of a Startup Entrepreneur" and "An Eye for an Eye" and “The Brand called You.”
He writes regularly for various online publications like Times of India, Business Insider, Inc., Entrepreneur, The Quint and Big Decisions and has a very significant presence on social media. He can be seen frequently on CNN News18 as a panelist commenting on various political affairs, current affairs and other subjects.
His wife Vera is a Historian and teaches at the American Embassy School, New Delhi. His older son, Varun works for American Express in Singapore as their Director Marketing and his younger son Ashwin works for Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati as their Senior Brand Manager.
A keen golfer, he plays the Indian flute and enjoys reading and listening to Indian classical and vocal music.

एक कठिन चरित्र का सरल चित्रण
कुछ विषय ऐसे हैं जिसमें हर कोई विशेषज्ञ है, और कोई विशेषज्ञ नहीं। जैसे एक समय क्रिकेट पर गहन विमर्श किसी भी चाय पर दुकान पर मिल जाता, उसी तरह गाँव में थोड़ा-बहुत पौराणिक विमर्श कोई भी कर सकता था। कथाएँ या तो सुनी होती, या कल्याण आदि पत्रिका में पढ़ी होती, जो बाद में टीवी धारावाहिक आदि से रिवाइज होने लगी। इस पुस्तक की अधिकांश कथाएँ भी स्मृति में कहीं न कहीं दर्ज थी, लेकिन उसके कुछ नाम और संदर्भ भूलने लगा था।
आशुतोष जी पारंपरिक पौराणिक लेखक हैं, अपने पिता के साथ सह-लेखन भी कर चुके हैं, और यूँ लगता है कि इस विधा में बचपन से डूबे हुए हैं। इसलिए ऐसे कठिन और कुछ हद तक विवादित विषय को लेकर सहज भी हैं। अन्यथा पुराणों पर दो टूक लिखने पर भी भय रहता है कि किसी स्वघोषित धर्म-रक्षक को बुरी न लग जाए।
इंद्र की छवि जो जनमानस में रही है, वह धूसर रही है, और इस कारण इससे आज की लोकतांत्रिक दुनिया में रिलेट करना आसान है। देवराज पुरंदर में सदाचार और लांपट्य का मिश्रण रहा है, जैसा आज के राजनेताओं पर भी तंज होता है। अपनी सत्ता बचाए रखने के लिए पुरंदर द्वारा किए गए उपक्रम किसी भी दिशा में चरम तक पहुँचते हैं। वहीं पुरंदर में अहंकार, लोभ और काम-वासना की भी प्रचुरता है, जो मनुष्यों में भी दिखती है। ऐसे व्यक्ति को केंद्र में रख कर, उनकी कथाओं का पाठ करना एक रोचक अनुभव रहा।
संयोग से शर्मिष्ठा पर आधारित उपन्यास पिछले वर्ष पढ़ी थी, तो उस सातत्य में इंद्र भी आ गए, हालाँकि दोनों के कलेवर अलग हैं। आशुतोष जी बहुत ही सरल और जनप्रिय भाषा में लिखते हैं, जैसे कोई बुजुर्ग मुस्कुराते हुए बच्चों को बूझा रहे हों। यह बात अवश्य है कि इंद्र-कथा की एज-रेटिंग 13 वर्ष से ऊपर है, लेकिन उसका कहन अश्लील नहीं लगता।
इन कथाओं का प्रगतिवादी आकलन भी हो सकता है, भले नव-प्रगतिवाद कई बार धर्म से द्वंद्व में दिखता है। इंद्र-कथा में ट्रांस-जेंडर, समलैंगिकता, और यहाँ तक कि ऐसे संदर्भ मिलेंगे कि गर्भधारण अगर पुरुष करे तो क्या हो? स्त्री अपनी इच्छाओं के प्रति कितनी स्वतंत्र है? यह प्रश्न भी है कि अगर अ-ब्राह्मण शास्त्रज्ञ बन जाएँ, तो क्या हो, और उसका उत्तर प्रगतिवादी दिशा में दिखता है।
अब अन्य भेद नहीं खोलते हुए, कुछ प्रश्न रखता हूँ, जिसके उत्तर इस पुस्तक में मिल जाएँगे-
1. कर्ण का जन्म-नाम क्या था, और कर्ण नाम किसने दिया?
2. किस असुर-वध के बाद कृष्ण का नाम मुरारी पड़ा?
3. अयोध्या के किस राजा ने स्वयं गर्भधारण कर एक पुत्र को जन्म दिया?
4. बाली और सुग्रीव के मूल पिता कौन (या कौन-कौन) थे?
5. इंद्र एक हैं या अनेक? यह नाम है या पद?

इंद्र के बारे में एक ही जगह विस्तार से पढ़ने का अवसर पहली बार मिला। आज तक हम इंद्र समझते आए हैं वह एक उपाधि है।
प्रत्येक मन्वंतर का एक इंद्र होता है और वर्तमान इंद्र का नाम है पुरंदर।
श्राद्ध क्यों मनाए जाते हैं, सांप की जीभ दो भागों में कैसे विभाजित हुई, गरुण पक्षियों का राजा कैसे बना, सूर्योदय की लालिमा को अरुणिमा क्यों कहा गया, हिरण्यकश्यप के वध के बाद प्रह्लाद का क्या हुआ और सबसे अद्भुत और हास्यप्रद कथा रही बाली और सुग्रीव के जन्म की।
इंद्र के बारे में इतना एक ही जगह पढ़ने को शायद ही मिल पाता । पौरणिक कथाओं में रुचि रखने वालों के लिय ये एक अच्छी पुस्तक है।

इंद्र से सम्बन्धित पौराणिक कहानियों का संकलन है ये। लेखक नें समयानुसार व्यवस्थित करने की आवश्यकता नहीं समझी।
