Akio accepted his Queen’s charge to stay behind and protect humanity from the Forsaken scourge.
She never said it would be easy.
An isolated police report about an island overtaken by feral, red-eyed creatures savaging humans spurs Akio to investigate.
The local police are good at their job, but they’re not well-equipped to handle things that go bump in the night.
Especially not the ones terrorizing this once-peaceful island paradise.
While dealing with the incursion, Akio discovers new information. The situation is escalating—and all evidence points to enemies from his past.
A dangerous science he’d thought was destroyed.
The Forsaken are rising to take their place as the alpha predators.
Now, it’s a race against overwhelming odds as Akio unravels long-laid complex plans and takes the fight to those who threaten the last bastion of civilization on post-apocalyptic Earth.
Can he stop this evil before it enslaves humanity?
Or will the Forsaken succeed in taking over the world?
3.5 Found this a little sluggish (strange because there was lots of action) but I have found several of these off shoot KGU series are that way. The three main characters are developed from the other books, it just took time to introduce the new characters. Willing to continue on in the series.
Akio was one of those characters that I read about in the KG series from Mr. Anderle. I've always liked his character and wondered if he would ever get his own books. Now here we are...and here he is, with his own books. YES!
The storyline was good. The author did a great job portraying Akio. In about 40% in, there was a slow section that I wasn't too keen on. I do understand the logic though as it helped to build on the storyline. everything before and after was great. If it wasn't for that section, it would have been a solid 5 stars. Regardless, it was an enjoyable read and I'm definitely looking forward to the next book. Can't wait to see how this ties into where Michael came back and onward to when BA came back to earth. I'm sure the author will surprise us all!
I have always been curious about Akio and was thrilled to hear he was getting his own series, but he is not alone and finding out more about the trio is so exciting! What a great start to Akio, Yuko and Eve's adventures!!! Learning of Akio's past and how it is shaping his present is thrilling to read! Learning about the inception of Eve and Yuko's business and knowing one day their brainchild will help some special twins!! Getting to know Akio's personality that we get hints of in other TKU books was truly an honor. I loved everything about this book and I thank Mr. Tillman, Mr. Anderle and their team for giving this amazing trio their own adventures!
From the moment I started reading this, I couldn't put it down!
Akio is one of those characters that is easy to be intrigued about, and I wanted to know more of his back story, the minute that I started reading about him in the Kurtherian Gambit series so, when I found a complete set of stories about him, I couldn't resist buying them...
I wasn't disappointed, at all!
I love the premise of these books, that Japan has recovered most of it's infrastructure after WWDE, mainly because I know that Japan recovered after the disasters of WW2, much sooner than most other places as, of course, they are a nation of survivors, and fighters, and have spent most of their history as a Nation, recovering from earthquakes and tidal waves, and any other tricks Mother Earth decides to inflict on them, and so, to me, it made sense that they would do so again.
So, we have Akio, and Yoku, and Eve, who stay in Japan, after Queen Bethany Anne leaves our galaxy, in order to be there when Michael, who Bethany Anne is convinced is still alive, and will come back to her, does so, so that they can be his support, and tell him where Bethany Anne has gone to.
In between TQB leaving, and any possible reappearance of Michael though, the small team have the job of keeping the Nosferatu, the Vampires, and the Werewolves who look on humanity as their natural prey, in order. Their task is to kill those who won't change their ways.
This book begins their stories, and is full of action, adventure, and a lot of fear by those who can't, or won't, learn their lessons, and I loved every minute of it!
So, on, on, to the second book of this series: Retaliation!
I’m not certain if It’s the correct reading order or not since I haven’t found a suggested reading order. Since Akio is an interesting character in the two Terry Henry Walton series I decided to read this after I finished the Bad Company series.
We meet Akio just after WWDE when Yuko is still an inexperienced student. In flashbacks we get information about the life Akio had, dating back to earlier than I expected. We are given a good tale that has both action and his efforts to help humanity recover from the destruction wrought by the apocalypse that was the World’s Worst Day Ever.
While the book is understandable on its own, I strongly recommend reading at least the initial Kutherian Gambit series first before reading this. It covers important details such as Who Queen Bethany Anne is, and why Akio & Yuko are serving her so loyally. I’m looking forward to seeing him begin the relationship with TH Walton from his POV!
While this is a part of the Queen Bitch series, it's quite different. It took me a while to get into the story because I expected something written similar to the main storyline. The biggest difference is that the irreverent humor running throughout the main storyline is missing from this book. Still, "Reprisal" has its own humor, as well as an interesting premise and characters from the main series. I really enjoy finding out what happened to the characters who aren't main characters, but maybe someone who was rescued by our heroes or just had a big enough impact for whatever reason that we'd remember them. They no longer just float away to never be heard from again! While not as dynamic as the main storyline books, I did enjoy reading this and will definitely continue on with this saga. ✋🐺
Yuko was not in the original group of Japanese vampires left behind by the Queen Bitch! So who is she? Also none of the Black Eagles were supposed to have been left behind and Akio's pod was weekend somehow by the time he comes around to America. Also all that stuff Eve says was left on the moon wasn't left on the moon or in orbit so where did it really come from? LOL. Let's take her word for it since she evolved into an AI. Anyway I loved the hell out of the story and bought the next one and even if you haven't read all the books leading up to this one and skipping over to the other side of the gate you will love it too. My spoiler didn't spoil this book much.
What have Akio and Yuku been doing since the Queen's Bitches left Earth with BA? Will Eve's evolve from EI to AI? Why has Akio always been emotionally distant from other members of the team?
The answers to these questions and more are revealed in a brilliant foray into the mystery that is Akio.
Charles has answered many of the questions that have risen about Akio's past, whilst remaining true to the details we already know. Some deteails are fully explained, others are hinted at but not resolved (yet).
This is the first Book in this new series, as the series unfurls, I'm sure we'll learn more about what make our favorite Japanese Queen's Bitch the character we have all grown to love.
Excellent book, unfortunately it’s only going to be a trilogy but well worth the read.
Very well done book. It was fast-paced full of action and likable characters. If you always wondered about the intervening years was Yukio and Akio this book gives you a glimpse into their life after Bethany Ann went into outer space. There was not a lot of world building which I enjoy because the world was already formed. I’m glad it took place in a different locale instead of the United States. Enjoyed the sword and gun play, plenty of humor going on to read the next one. If you enjoy the KGU, you will enjoy this book as well. If not read it anyway it’s well worth your time.
For those of us who have been patiently, or not so patiently waiting, it's finally here! Akio's story! And- it's well worth the wait. A wonderful start to answer the question "What happended with Akio, Eve, and Yuko after the WWDE? " I am so glad it's finally here. Charles does an amazing job with Akio taking him over from Michael. I can't wait for book 2 to see where it goes from here!
Love that aiko got his own books he runs very deep and lost so much and so many this story (series) gives us a chance to see how he ticks and see the deep ties that have formed with yuko and eve the closure he gets dealing with the monsters from his past and present and of course the absolute cliffhanger....can’t wait to read about that!
Thank you so very much for a fantastic read. I have always been curious to see who Akio was prior to BA and you have delivered a great first book. I found him interesting in the original series. I grew to like him even more with his cameo appearances in the Terry Walton Chronicles. This book was filled with history, introducing new characters, explosions and more. I can't wait to see what the next story holds!!! Th
I stopped reading this at about 25%. The concept is interesting, post apocalyptic world with high tech vampires. The problem is that is all I know. After reading a quarter of a book I would expect to have some kind of idea about where the world is at, what kind of vampires are we dealing with, supposedly they are artificial enhanced but how, way to many basic questions not answered. Combat sequences are good, but does not make up for lack of background information
20 years have passed since Bethany Anne aka TQB left the galaxy with most of her troops. Akio and Yuko are left behind to look after Japan and keep humanity safe from creatures that would do them harm. Following up on a report of sailors being torn apart by monsters on a local island, they find it is part of a larger threat. A lot of fun and violence, though without the Queen Bitch's colorful language.
Akio has an interesting history, one with both darkness and light. Seeing his story fills in some gaps. The action is intense, the humour various shades of dry and witty, and the lightness brought by the girls keeps the overall tone from being too dark. A good balance, and a great start to what I feel will be another amazing series within the Kurtherian Universe.
I am very impressed with the opening story about Akio. His voice and how he handles his job given to him by Bethany Anne is perfect. I also loved the setup for where Akio and Yuko are related to where they are in the future. Knowing Eve better is a bonus. I highly recommend this book.
I very rarely write reviews, however, I started this book in the am. And finished it 6 hours later. The characters flow from what has already been written and fans of KGU will love the mayhem and humour that flows from the characters. As well as part of the history of what happened following WWDE.
Great follow up story explaining what Akio was up to after Bethany Anne left. There are so many possible routes that can be taken that it is nice to finally see the start of some closure on the issue. CT has done an excellent job putting some more flesh on an existing character.
Finally we get to see the story of Akiko, Eve, and Yuko after BA left. Taking place after the WWDE, Japan is just beginning to recover and emerge as the place where technology survived. The battle against the remaining Forsaken continues to be chronicled. A fantastic read.
The story is very uniquely Akio but with just enough tidbits here and there of his background. Plus Japanese background and mixture of characters just makes for a great read. Not to mention providing more background on Eve. Just a great way to the events around WWDE and keeping things tied to BA. Fantastic read and can't wait to start the next story.
An excellent start to a trilogy, I didn't know I needed
I loved the akio stories in the far future and I'm loving this trilogy so far.
A great story with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. I enjoyed this glimpse into the back story of some of my favourite characters. I look forward to the next one😀
This was well worth the wait. It’s nice to read what happened to the others that stayed behind when Bethany Ann left. I like reading the back story’s to the characters. It tells you what happened to made them the way they are. Akio was always an honorable man forced to do bad things. Thanks again for your imagination Wendy
I've been interested in all the books stemming from the Kurtherian gambit books. Akio is an important character to the series. He has the full trust of Bethany Ann and was given a task vital to the remaining world. I have yet to read any books in the series that disappointed me.
I love this complete series. Bethany Anne is to die for. makes me wish I lived in her verse. Akio is the best ever showing the Japanese honor and moral codes they live by. Bethany Anne just makes him better. Charles and Michael bring these characters to life. keep up the good work guys. A must sci to read
Thank you Charles Tillman and Michael Anderle for giving us a story about Aiko, Yuko and Eve. I've always wondered what happened to them after the WWDE and now I know they are still fighting the good fight. They're taking out evil and rescuing the innocent. A great read. Enjoy!
I never thought this series was a part of the Kutherian Gambit Universe but it is. Its just one of the few series that I recently discovered. I'm excited to see what could possibly be next. If you haven't read the Kutherian Gambit series, I highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed.
Love how it explains how Eve evolves, or what causes her to evolve. The fight scenes with Yuko and Akio and very realistic and are easy to picture in my mind. Enjoyed the back story into Akio life. The fight was over too quick.
