Ewan Campbell fought to free himself from his past. Quite literally. A former prizefighter, he now earns his living as an artist. But Ewan still fights more figurative opponents—dark memories that threaten to overwhelm him. Worse, when he is hired to assist a famous painter, Ewan finds himself falling for the man’s highborn niece, Lady Kildrum. Such feelings are pointless. Countesses do not fall in love with impoverished Highlanders, no matter what fairy tales say.

Violet Kerr, Lady Kildrum, struggles to make decisions. She is a countess in her own right, for heaven’s sake. Decision-making skills should flow through her blood. After all, her life’s path is clear—marry a nobleman, provide for her sisters, and see to the welfare of her tenants.

Though Violet has made one decision—

She must curb her attraction to Ewan Campbell, her uncle’s new art assistant. The lowly Highlander, no matter how alluring, is not a proper suitor for a countess. She definitely should not fantasize about the man.

Or, if she does, she should not allow such fantasies to lead to very real kissing. Because kissing could bring on the most difficult decision of all—

What happens if Violet chooses to fall in love with the one man she can never have?

Another solid entry in this series

This one dragged a bit in the middle and didn’t really have a mean villain to hate, there was a baby villain, but nothing like the last two books. But it was sweet and both main characters extremely loveable. The ending was super unrealistic but I liked it anyway.

Not much else to say, this is a good series with lots of angst, emotion and longing.

Nichole Van can do no wrong.

I absolutely think she is the QUEEN of Scottish romance and has earned her crown well.

This 3rd edition to the Black Tartan brotherhood is golden. A countess who is unsure of her place in society and a man who is a juxtaposition of hard lines, and poetic flourishes. This book was sensitive and sweet with just the right amount of heat and attraction. I loved the conflict and how even though we know it’s a HEA…the way that it was accomplished was very well done.

I adored this couple and loved seeing them flourish separately and together…both pushing the other to be the best versions of themselves.

This is a book about destiny and how you hold the power in your hands to see it through if you could just let go of your fear. With themes of artistry, pugilism, and taking a leap damned the consequences…there wasn’t much to NOT love. This was lovely and sweet and I can’t recommend this series enough.

On to book 4!

Once again, Ms. Van has written a truly wonderful story. She really has a gift for storytelling and bringing her characters to life. Even the supporting cast felt alive and unique. I enjoyed the fun Scottish setting (which only made my desire to visit there one day grow stronger) and the overall feel of the book.

I will say, the prologue was just superb! I can't remember a better prologue, seeing the first meeting of Ewan and Violet, it really leaves you antsy to get into the rest of the book to find out what happens next. I've been on a kick lately, where I don't read the book synopsis, preferring to just jump right in (I can only do this with trusted authors), so I wasn't sure where this story would go. I was pleasantly surprised by the unique storyline, our giant of a hero being a master painter, while our strong, but gentle heroine was an Earl! She inherited the title, under Scottish law, and was basically the Big Boss, as my kids would say. They come from very different walks of life, but are drawn to each others goodness. I loved Ewan and Violet and was rooting for them to figure out a way to be together, it seems impossible.

I loved seeing Ewan's friends from the Brotherhood, one scene particular had my laughing out loud. I really love friendship storylines like this in books, that unshakable connection friends have for each other, how they would do anything for each other. We also get to learn a few more secrets from the ongoing mystery that was established in the first book, although it doesn't play too large a role in this story.

Overall, it was just a fantastic read. I thoroughly enjoyed every page. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series! (And perhaps, we could have a spin-off book or novella for Violet's twin sisters?? I would love to see what mischief they get into when they make their debut into society!)

Content
Romance: Clean, passionate kisses
Language: Very very mild, maybe one curse word?
Violence: Mild, talk of prizefighting
Series: Part of a series, could stand on its own, but would give away parts of the mystery, would recommend reading in order

Achingly slowly working my way through this series on fabulous-narrator audio. Love how this concept of an unexpected band of “brothers” gives us such variety of Scottish heroes, socio-economic scenarios and, of course, tropey tropes. Here we have the ever-brilliant, transporting, swoon-your- earasaid-off writing that, as a borderline-rabid fan, I’ve come to know and love, and I adored gentle giant sweetheart Ewan in all his duality glory and relating a little too well to Violet’s indecisive overthinker torture. The struggle that led to my “Not mad about it, just miffed I wasn’t set ablaze” conclusion lies in a very subjective difficulty: exclusively external conflict, especially in the shape of class difference, does not grab me by the bonnet strings. Besides being hit over the head with the physicality of his massive chest, I’m not saying we didn’t get great moments of depth progression and characterization arcs that theme-crescendo into full circle resolutions. I’m saying I love to see author-geek-outs on art history, technique and the wonders of the visual creative mind. I’m saying I loved to see part of the brotherhood as meddling mother hens and getting some juicy Black Tartan reveals. I’m saying I loved seeing a fundamentally complementary couple with tons of competence attraction-the perfect hero for a woman in an uncommon position of power at that time- champion, confidant and, yes, the most massive shoulder, on the most broadest chest to ever braw, to lean on. What I am saying is, at this point, I’m expecting the Van reading experience to be a hostile takeover of my life and to be reviewing a Van book as I sweep the ashes of my romance reader psyche, and for this one, less so. I guess in a way I should be grateful they can’t all be devastating internal-conflict redemption-arc grovel-fests, since I don’t know how I’d realistically manage that. Ewan and Violet are love-predictably-conquers-all lovely, and I’m not mad about it.

Content notes: Kissing Only, a little too skewed towards physical attraction for my pearls, toxic parent, mention of death of a sibling, mention of accidental deaths. Some biblical swearing.

Not your typical Regency romance...

As much as I love the Regency times, I'm kind of glad I didn't live back then, because the pressure to marry for money, or pretty much another reason but love, is real and not exactly my cup of tea.

This series of strong, rugged, down-to-earth Scottish men has my heart and I loved Ewan's tale. The book opens with a solid, and dangerous, first meet that stole my breath and this unlikely match captivated me as the story progressed.

I loved that Violet isn't a typical on-the-verge-of-fainting type of woman, not only in her looks, but in her title and powerful presence. On the same hand, Ewan isn't the typical heathen Highlander. The brewing mutual attraction, shrouded in a cloak of mystery surrounding Ewan's brotherhood, was the perfect recipe for a delightfully charming Regency romance, with a hefty dash of Scottishness on top.

I seriously loved it all. I love how the layers of this mystery are slowly peeled away with each installment in the series and I can't wait to learn the whole of it. Van does a great job of creating vivid imagery with her words and dimensional characters that come to life in my imagination. The romance is the perfect amount of intrigue and swoon, which added a great flavor to this book.

Content: mild romance; mild moments of danger/violence

Oh man! How I love Van's books! This was so beautiful:} What an unusual story line. I have never even heard of a woman being an Earl! How cool to find this is actual history! Ewan is next to get his story in the band of brothers. This gentle giant who is quiet and soft in his ways has a heck of a love story. Their first meeting was everything you want in a meet between love interests. I love how their meetup changes the course of their lives. Violet was just perfect for him:] She had many obstacles to overcome and she does it all so well. Van tells a love story with lots of fun attraction moments but you see how that attraction leads to love. This one had such fun tension. I loved how attracted Violet was to Ewan and how it was a battle she fought with herself. I have a hard time with regency books that hardly ever mention their attraction to each other! It is so important in a love story. There is some sweet kisses and lots of moments of attraction, more then in this series so far. Can Not Wait till Kiran's story next! Gosh the set up for that was so well done! Love it! Thank you Nichole, your my fav:}

Oh this series just keeps getting better! I'm loving these strong Scottish men who are not only loyal friends but loyal to the women they love. This is a book about destiny and how you hold the power in your hands to see it through if you could just let go of your fear. I loved the thought of just taking a leap despite the consequences… with beautiful themes of artistry & poetry...whats not to love. Oh and let’s not forget the shocking reveal 🤯 This was lovely and sweet and I can't recommend this series enough.

Ewan is truly a gentle giant, a painter, quiet & soft but also strong and fierce… he literally had to fight to get to where he is. Violet is in a unique position of power, a countess who is unsure of her place in society. I have never even heard of a woman being an Earl in her own right! How cool to find this is based on actual history! I adored this couple and loved the way they develop a friendship and support each other through their personal struggles. Their attraction and chemistry is palpable, and brings a powerful tension to the story. I like the continued mystery involving the Brotherhood, and that we get a little more of the story with each book in the series. It creates a mystery and sense of suspense while the main characters are also dealing with their immediate circumstances & obstacles. Can’t wait to read book four!

I love how this series has a continuity plot that connects the books beyond the relationship of the group of men. It creates a mystery and sense of suspense while the main characters are also dealing with their immediate circumstances and obstacles. Ewan is full of contrasts which intrigue Violet, and I loved his depth of character that emerges through his art. Violet is in a unique position of power, however unprepared she feels for it. The way they develop a friendship and support each other through their personal struggles is lovely. Their attraction and chemistry is palpable, and brings a powerful tension to the story. This is a great addition to the series and I just can't wait for the next one!!!

Another lovely addition to this series. I loved the breadth of these characters. They were fully fleshed out and carried the plot beautifully.
Certain revelations in this book were truly punch-to-the-gut surprising and brought an entirely different layer to the whole series. I'm excited for the next one!

LOVABLE.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

Both of these characters embodied that word: lovable. I adored this third installment of the Brotherhood series and wow am I just whisked away into these stories each time.

Once again I love how unique these set-ups are. Often I feel the historical romances I pick up are pretty similar in dynamics. I looove that this had the love interest as a gentle giant who could box and paint. And even more so that the heroine was a Lady who was in a “man’s position” for the time period. It was wonderful seeing these two collide and help each other rise from some of the heartaches of the past. I do wish there was a little more focus on the romance in this book, buuut it was still amazing and the ENDING. I was tearing up and the sweetest sentiments exchanged between Ewan and Violet.

I love that throughout the series is this bond of male friendship between the brotherhood. It’s been adding mystery and intrigue with solving more of the story of the ship that sank on their prior voyage and the reveals in here have been excited to see where this series will continue to go.

This has been an amazing series so far and I can’t wait for the next!!

Overall audience notes:
- Historical romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of parents, near death experiences, depictions of grief, loss of siblings, substance abuse (alcohol – side character)

Two people lost in a morass of grief, cannot find their way through it. Lots of internal monologuing which slowed the story down. They needed each other but could not take a step in that direction. Then Lord Hadley and Sir Rafe showed up about halfway though the book and the story most definitely perked up. Then a big surprise and my attention was engaged. I liked Ewan right away, but felt sorry for Violet's indecisiveness. This is not a standalone, the two previous books should be read in order. Recommended for the continuation of the series.

Do yourselves a favor and read this series. I have loved every single one of them (this book is number 3) . They’re just so good. Ewan reminded me so much of Kristoff in Frozen 2... supporting his lady and encouraging her to be the hero in her own story instead of trying to swoop in and “rescue” her. Basking in the swoony afterglow of a good book right now....which is, of course, the best place to be.

Wow! This story of Ewan Campbell and Lady Violet Kildrum is not your ordinary Regency tale. Ewan comes from a lowly background where he literally had to fight to make a living for sister and himself, while Violet is a titled lady and niece of a famous painter. But the heart wants what the heart wants and these two are drawn to each other like a moth to a flame. How will they manage to be together?

I'm loving this series of strong Scottish men who are not only loyal friends but loyal to the women they love. Ewan is truly a gentle giant of a man and Violet may be small in stature but she's large and in charge when she needs to be. I love the Prologue and how Ewan and Violet meet--it's like the best first meeting ever! Then the story skips ahead 7 years.

I loved both of these characters, and I liked Violet's uncle, the painter. I loved Violet's sisters and thought they were so much fun. Hopefully we'll get to see them again. I love the scenes of Ewan the his friends in the Brotherhood. I like the continued mystery involving the Brotherhood, and that we get a little more of the story with each book in the series. I can't wait to find out the rest of the story.

This is a great series. I own the ebook, but listened to the audiobook of this from my library using the Hoopla app, because I love the narrator. She's fantastic.

I liked the book, but didn’t love it. Although I understand the reality of the difference in their classes being an impediment to their relationship, I got tired of hearing about it. I also felt that Ewan’s character was too timid. It felt like that because Violet had inherited a title usually only a man would have, that (without giving too much away), her character, was written as a weird combination of wanting to be swept off her feet but having to take the more male role in the romance because of her typically male title and status. That being said, I enjoyed the continuation of the series. I liked the twist we find out about later in the book and am looking forward to reading the next book.

Definitely more than 5 stars.

I've been loving this series but I think this is my favorite. I know I say that all the time, and I'll probably say it again for book 4.

Here's an author who keeps getting better and better, and I loved every line of this story.

Don't miss it!

Violet Kerr, Lady Kildrum, a countess with a title in her own right, passed down to the heir, in spite of her being a woman - and with that title, comes all the responsibility that goes with it, but with very little support or respect. It also comes with many suitors that pursue her for the wrong reasons. But one day when circumstances put her face to face with the prize fighter, Ewan Campbell, their conversation changes both of their lives and paths forever. And then when seven years later, they meet again, it seems that it is fate, but how can fate combat the differences in their stations in life, as well as the responsibilities that each of them are facing.

Another great installment of the Brotherhood of the Black Tartan, and I loved getting to know Ewan's story. It was a little on the sad side, but I did love the easy and real relationship between Violet and Ewan.

I don't think I could have loved this book anymore than I did! It was so fun to visit the Brotherhood of the Black Tartan again! Nichole Van creates such wonderful series and each one is like visiting again with old friends. Ewan became a new favorite of mine. He is a gentle giant and I loved his soft heart and how much he cared and supported Violet. I also loved that Violet was an independent woman and still acknowledged the beauty of having a partner who supports her. Overall, this book was full of many many swoonworthy moments and I thoroughly enjoyed every single word!

Oh dear, I struggled to finish. The h can't make a decision so dithers while her tenants livelihoods are at risk. The plot didn't make much sense. H is a great boxer and an artist? So risks his hands? To me they seemed to be rather stupid. I lost interest in the series, this was a turn off. The next series is great, so like the author just not this series.

I am really loving this series!

Ewan was just the absolute sweetest and a true gentle giant. I loved the first time he met Violet and how they were able to come together years later. The ending was precious.

The scenes with the Brotherhood were the best. When Andrew and Rafe ask Violet about her feelings toward Ewan? I was dying. Hilarious! There were also some big, heartbreaking reveals about their past trauma. I can’t wait to learn more.

This was the third book in the Brotherhood of the Tartan series. This one features Ewan, a giant of a man who grew up fighting to earn money to work his way out of poverty. He meets Lady Violet and is forever changed. Years later, when they meet again, he is an accomplished artist on the cusp of national renown, who is working with her artist uncle. She has inherited her Scottish estate from her mother and is bound by duty to cover all those expenses, debts and responsibilities. But her heart longs for Ewan. He longs for her, but knows he will never be her equal, even if the king himself commissioned him to paint for him. The two are in an impossible situation, a forbidden romance, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to reconcile their demons and duties, without hurting many others in the process and being cast out of high society. My emotions were yanked around (Van is good at doing that), but I swooned and sighed as I journeyed along with the characters and tried to guess how this whole impossibility could become a possibility. I never see what Van brings out at the end, which is probably why I like her books so much. Anyway, this was another great one, with some twists that really threw me for a loop. So good! I highly recommend.

This was great! I love Nicholes stories!! This one I think was a bit more tender than the first two and also a little bit steamer as well...but only because everyone was obsessed with Ewans height and muscles!
and...HOLY COW JAMIE IS A GIRL!!! That part where Kieran falls over crying when he sees the painting! I was like Whaaaat!! It was heart breaking! I really wonder now how she is going to wrap it up! And I bet you a hundred bucks Jamie is still alive! 😉

Wasn’t as crazy about the characters or the romance in this once. The connection was largely (no pun intended) physical. And I have little patience for nonstop lusty fixations.

The history and unique social structure of uk/ Scotland was very interesting.

Spoilers

Didn’t see the big reveal coming - well done. The interesting thing is that I caught notes of a romance, which made me confused and uneasy. Glad to have it all out in the open.

2.75 ⭐️ Unfortunately this is the weakest book of the series. It started out promising, but then became a repetitive internal monologue 🤦‍♀️ I almost DNF’ed it until I heard Lord Hadley and Sir Rafe would show up half way through.

The first half : 2 ⭐️

The second half: 3.5 ⭐️

The chapter where Kieran reveals his juicy secret: 5 ⭐️!!!

Bookish Yays:
😍 The art analysis was interesting, especially when related to the emotions it portrayed.

😍 I love that this series has an overarching plot connecting all 5 books—seeing the brotherhood together is always a treat, and is the best part of this book.

😍 The meet-cute is unique and exciting. Hello prize fighter.

😍 Lord Hadley and Sir Rafe dropping by for an unsolicited relationship intervention.😂

😍 Violet & Ewan’s moonlit conversation

Mixed Bag:
😐An indecisive female paired with a gentle giant. It had promise, but I’m not sure about the execution.

😐 The main relationship drama is over class differences—and while star crossed lovers worked well in Romancing a Rake, it felt bland in this one.

😐 I still love the audio narrator, but I would have preferred a deeper voice for our giant hero, Ewan.

😐 The author kept repeatedly teasing us with vague mentions of secrets that the characters knew, but took a while to share.

😐 Heavy on metaphors and references to art and prize fighting. Both relate to the hero, but… a little more diversity would’ve been nice.

😐 The same information (interesting the first time) gets repeated through different perspectives and scenarios—again and again. 🤦‍♀️

😐 The citrus joke was fun the first time, and even the 2nd and 3rd reiterations, but I wanted new material by its 4th reference.

😐 The “romantic” scenes that usually make me swoon were more cheesy… 😅😬 I literally skipped their first kiss because they didn’t have a believable connection and I wasn’t interested. This is NOT normal. But, the conversation right before was beautifully romantic. 🤷‍♀️

Bookish Nays:
😒 Instead of a heavy-handed matron, we get an overly-pious hypocritical father, two frivolous sisters, and some tight-laced neighbors. I have a low tolerance for annoying characters, and this surpassed it. At least the uncle is pleasant.

😒 A slower pace than previous two books, bogged down by repetitive inner monologue.

😒 Beyond Ewan’s appreciation of Violet’s kindness, their chemistry was mainly physical, thus making their connection shallow. There was even a point I skipped ahead to avoid Violet blatantly ogling Ewan when he was posing for her uncle. The book literally said, “but it was more than mere lust.” Gross.

😒 Everyone harps on Ewan’s size. It’s annoying to him, and it’s annoying to the reader.

😒 Ewan depicts his emotions in color. I’ve read a few other books that do this, usually in YA fantasy or when one of the main characters is an artist. I tolerate it, but have never loved it.

😒 Started to lose interest around 40% and began skimming. 😭 It started to pick up when Lord Hadley and Sir Rafe showed up around 50%, and was hit and miss skimming from there. Kieran’s secret was juicy though!

If you want to get details about the overarching plot of the series, know that the magistrate approached Lord Hadley about some new information coming to light about the Minerva, that the meeting with the magistrate was uneventful, and then start reading at Chapter 14 for the beginning of the interesting bits.

Quotes for your enjoyment:
✨ Life needs more of this, Violet realized. This truth telling, spilling words into muted silence of night. It was communing soul to soul in its purest form.

✨ I fear that duty is a cold comfort in the end.

Content:
Kissing only, semi descriptive, a lot of noticing Ewan’s stature and his muscles when he’s posing for a painting in only a cloth, boarders on lust and made me uncomfortable so I skipped ahead, mild language (biblical swear words, and p*ss), but no blasphemies, death of parents, sibling, and loss of an infant

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5)
Steam Level: 🔥 (kissing only)

When Violet Kerr inherits the earldom suo jure and becomes the new Lady Kildrum, she is overwhelmed with new responsibilities. Additionally, after the scandal caused by her middle sister, Violet must set a perfect example of propriety for her youngest sisters. When Ewan Campbell arrives as an apprentice to Violet's uncle, everything becomes much more complicated. Ewan is large, muscular, and kind-hearted, too. How can Violet resist him? It's time for her to decide what she wants in terms of her title and matters of the heart.

Is it hot in here, or is it just me? Apparently, I love a behemoth of a man, and Nichole Van brought the closed door steam with all the descriptions of Ewan's physique and strength. Don't let his brawn fool you, though. Ewan has a sweet, tender heart and artistic prowess to boot. Basically, he's a perfect male specimen. Have I convinced you to read this yet? If not, let me throw in the conflict of class differences, the pain of losing a loved one, meddling friends, and a shocking reveal. There was just so much to love about this story! The only thing that kept this from being a perfect 5 star was the fact that the inner dialogues got very repetitive. I kinda wanted to shake Violet, although I really did love her strength and determination to set a good example. I also think it's important to read books 1 & 2 first in order to fully understand the overarching Brotherhood storyline and fully appreciate the mystery that the MMCs of the series are trying to solve. I've enjoyed all three books so far, so it's totally worth it. I am dying for Kieran's book after reading this one, so I'll be jumping into book 4 very soon!

WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Ewan Campbell fought to free himself from his past. A former prizefighter, he now earns his living as an artist. When he's to assist a famous painter, Ewan finds himself falling for the man’s highborn niece, Lady Kildrum. Such feelings are pointless. Countesses do not fall in love with impoverished Highlanders, no matter what fairy tales say.

Violet Kerr, Lady Kildrum, struggles to make decisions. A countess in her own right, she has obligations to uphold society's standard and must curb her attraction to Ewan Campbell, the lowly Highlander.

What happens if Violet chooses to fall in love with the one man she can never have?

MY TAKE
*sigh*

Another wonderful addition to the Brotherhood of the Black Tartan. I loved getting to see Andrew and Rafe again and see how their lives are moving on with their lady loves. There's a huge reveal in this book relating to the reason behind why they created the brotherhood in the first place. I love how this thread runs through all the books.

But the story is about Ewen and Violet. Seriously swoonworthy. And I love her uncle and younger sisters. So much pressure is on both Ewen and Violet. It's heart wrenching. The resolution is awesome.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator who's done all the books was great with th emotions and accents. I'm kind of getting used to some of the Scottish men sounding higher pitched than the women's voices.

“I’ll always remember the fine lady who helped a brute of a Scot with grace and kindness. Ye have a heart of great courage.”

Ewan! I loved this prizefighter turned artist. I was hooked from the Prologue! I found it interesting how he related emotions to colors. Learning his history and heartbreak from before the voyage, and seeing him face the feelings head-on was almost heartbreaking. Violet, she had some struggles with her guilt and her position as the earl. I was so happy to see Violet make decisions for her happiness for the earldom and herself. I was dying at the “interview” between Andrew, Rafe and Violet. 😆
And the brotherhood storyline had a major twist that completely shocked me!
I cannot wait to start book 4 to learn Alex’s story.

Favorite quotes:
“True happiness results from giving love and being truly loved in return.”

“You are my future—my best and last and only decision. I choose you.”

“We are forever united. Ye’ve chosen me, lass. Ye cannae take it back now.”

Note: There is some mild swearing.

This story follows Ewan Campbell, an artist with the sweetest hearts, and a Countess that has overwhelming responsibilities that overpower her longing for love.

This love story was deep, emotional and absolutely lovely. It was definitely a different relationship compared to the last two heroes with much less banter but with adorable sweetness. All heart eyes for the big tall hunk of a Scotsman!

Along with their love story, you continue the backstory saga...and oh my goodness...look out!! Big plot twist in this book that rendered me speechless in the best of ways...Kieran you have had my heart from day one! I get it now!

This is a MUST read series. Romance, Scotland, swoony kisses, adventure...what's not to love? Seriously, stop what you are doing and get on this!

Thank you Nichole for another delightful book! You can do no wrong😍
