Lauren Sykes and Harry Prentice are on the run from Lauren’s father Kyle and Gus Perrin who are heads of Organised Criminal Gangs. Drawn into the web of destruction are DI Toby Clarke and DS Petra Merrow. The story is told from several perspectives which works well.

First of all, I like the premise and plot which has a sort of ‘Line of Duty’ vibe to it. It starts of a bit plodding of pace but this picks up after a bit. There is tension, danger and fear in parts and some exciting and grittily shocking events that unfold. I like how it’s not just Lauren and Harry that have to stay safe from the avenging networks but other characters too and that adds an extra dimension. You really root for Lauren who is clever and wise beyond her seventeen years probably due to the need to be ultra vigilant because of her father’s criminal thuggery. She needs to utilise every ounce of her brave resourcefulness to escape the rapidly encroaching danger. Harry is more like a father to her than her biological one and their relationship is heartwarming. The author has created good characters in Clarke and Merrow and I look forward to reading what happens to them in the next instalment.

Overall this is a twisty thriller which keeps you guessing throughout with a good, realistic ending.

Lauren Sykes, seventeen-year-old daughter of Kyle Sykes, a man everyone feared, and the police could never pin down, had terror in her heart. She needed to flee, to get away from her father as she knew he would kill her without a qualm. After all, she knew he’d killed her mother. Lauren wouldn’t stay one step ahead of her father for long…

When her father’s men became too close, once again she ran. But this time she had a phone number to call – only in the case of an emergency, and it was definitely that. The woman who answered the phone was hushed but confident – she’d retrieve Lauren in a couple of hours. She just had to stay safe in the meantime. But could Lauren trust this woman? She had to trust someone, but she also knew her father had local cops on his payroll.

Meanwhile DI Toby Clarke was working the police department end. The speed everything was moving, he had trouble keeping up, but uniting forces with Petra Morrow kept the adrenalin pumping. The bodies were piling up, Kyle Sykes’ alibis were rock solid as were Gus Perrin’s. Would they be able to keep Lauren safe and trip her father up? Clarke didn’t like their chances…

What an absolute corker of a read! Safe is the first in a new series – Merrow & Clarke – by Jane A. Adams and it took off from the first page and kept going until the last! Fast paced, plenty of twists, bodies and intimidated people everywhere; my heart was in my throat most of the journey! I can’t wait for the next addition to the series. Highly recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

All Lauren Sykes wants is to be safe. At seventeen, she's aware that her father .. a well known crime lord ... murdered her mother. He's tried to force her into a marriage with a vicious criminal in order to combine their families. Lauren had other ideas and her future "husband' is now on the floor ... shot and killed with his own gun. It was self defense...but Lauren knows her father will have her killed.

Lauren runs to the only person she knows who can help her ... a retired member of her father's' organization. The two of them hit the road and try to make plans on how to disappear before they are found. But they're too late ....

With two criminal families after one teenager, the action is non-stop. The characters are skillfully drawn .... from the scared teen, to the undercover cop who may or may not be corrupt ... to her vindictive father ... There are twists and turns making it hard to know who to trust .. who's lying and who's telling the truth. The plot is tightly woven with a highly unexpected ending.

Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Books n All Book Promotions / Netgalley for the digital copy of this riveting crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC of the book for free. This review is my honest opinion and strictly voluntary.

Safe is a fast-paced crime thriller that got my attention right away and kept it peaked until the very end.

A seventeen year old daughter of a mob boss is on the run for killing the man her father had promised her to in marriage. Ironically, he is the son of a another mobster. Seeking refuge and help after the murder she turns to a former employer of her father; basically another former mobster. Which I thought was a different twist.

Thus the premise of the story chronicles their fleeing for safety and the dilemmas they encounter along the way while simultaneously back at home the police are trying to investigate the mobster’s supposed “accidental death”.
Each chapter continues building with several “shocking twists” along the way.

I definitely enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others that enjoy crime thrillers. My only critique is there are a few grammatical errors that I sure proofing and publishing will resolve.

Hope to see more from this author in the future.

This is the first book in a new series by Jane Adams. I loved the Mike Croft series so was looking forward to settling down with this one and I was far from disappointed.

Lauren has never been safe her father is an evil man who cares only about himself and his power and his plans for the future include a merger with the Perrins and o do that Lauren will marry Charlie Perrin the fact that Lauren doesn't like Charlie and is only 17 whereas he is much older doesn't matter to Kyle, all that matters is him having total control.

Lauren is a resourceful character. Life has taught her to survive. 17 years old but with the life experience of someone much older she knows she can only rely on herself. When Charlie tries to rape her she reacts by shooting him. Realising she has made a mistake that will bring the wrath not only of her father but also the Perrins down on her she runs to the only person she trusts thereby dragging him into her problems.

What follows is a race to keep one step ahead of her pursuers, forced to trust a total stranger can Lauren survive against all the odds?

WOW what can I say? A fantastic read full to the brim with adrenaline pumping suspense that had me gripped from the very first page. Very realistic characters that gain depth over the course of the story. I loved Lauren. The life she has led has formed her character and Jane has written this perfectly. This is an awesome read that will appeal to anyone who likes a good thriller. 5 stars from me.

4.5 stars. Seventeen-year-old Lauren Sykes is on the run for her life after she kills her fiancee who has tried to rape her. Her father is an organized crime boss and he decided she should marry into the Perrin family to bring the families closer together. She kills Charlie with his own gun and goes to the only person who may be able to help her, Harry.

Harry used to work for her father, but is retired. He takes her away no questions asked doing his best to protect her. But what kind of protection can an old man offer a girl who has two major mob families on her trail? Lauren knows if her father catches up with her, he'll kill her.

Clarke and Merrow are two cops who become Lauren's only chance for survival. Organized crime has infiltrated the police, there are very few people who can be trusted. Will they get Lauren out alive?

I am really excited to see this is a new series about Clarke and Merrow. We only scratched the surface of their personalities and abilities in this first book. I can't wait to read more. Very good crime novel.

Safe by Jane A Adams
.
After facing her attacker, Lauren is on the run. If she’s found she knows she’s dead.
DI Toby is called to a sudden death that seems awfully suspicious.
Petra has been undercover for years attempting to infiltrate a criminal gang. When she gets a call from a young girl she has never met she needs to decide if she will risk blowing her cover to help her.
.
This was a very fast paced mystery/thriller that was pretty suspenseful. I was stressed enough about it that I couldn’t really stop reading it.
I don’t want to give anything away but I enjoyed seeing each POV as Toby and Petra were working their cases and how Lauren was just trying to find a safe place.

***I was provided an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.***

***May contain spoilers .***

2.5 stars rounded UP.

Safe follows Lauren, one child/ daughter of a crime lord through her journey to get away from her father’s extensive crime ring after she kills a man she is set to marry in self-defense. This book ended up reeling me in, however, I was not invested until I was 34% of the way through the book. I’m other words, it took some time for the book to pick-up, but the action in the middle of the book almost makes it worth it. As a lover of psychological thrillers, I will say this was nothing unique and is not something I would recommend to others.

Things I liked about this book:

-Lauren, although only 17, has a good head on her shoulders and continues to surprise those helping her with how intuitive she is.
-When it finally picks up, although the outcome could be guessed by the reader, it is action-packed for a time.
-I found myself really rooting for Lauren and even though I knew I wouldn’t end in the way I didn’t want it to, I felt like k had to keep reading.

Things I found to be “meh” :

-It’s harder to get invested when there is no “love” and Lauren’s father found her to just be a pawn in his games.
- Harry, Lauren’s uncle, had too small of a presence. I wanted more.
-The ending was too predictable.

Overall, if you’re a Jane Adams fan, go for it, just know you won’t be surprised. However, if you’re looking for more excitement I might look elsewhere.

Thank you netgalley. Great story. I didn't want to put it down. Lauren is only 17, but her father has arranged for her to marry a member of a rival crime family, the Perrins. In an attempt to protect herself she kills her soon to be husband. Lauren along with her uncle Harry and one of his contacts is on the run. She not only is been hunted by the Perrin family but also by her own father's crime family.

Lauren has learned a lot about how to survive, but will she be able to with two crime families and a corrupt police force looking for her?

SAFE (PolProc-Merrow and Clarke-England-Contemp)
Jane Adams – Standalone
Joffe Books, June 2020, 272 pp.
RATING: VG+/A

First Sentence: Blood on her hands, blood on her face, on her clothes. Blood everywhere.

Lauren is the daughter of Kyle Sykes, a criminal who is forcing her into marriage with Charlie Perrin, the son of her father’s rival counterpart. When Charlie tries to rape Lauren, she manages to get his gun and kill him. Knowing her father will kill her, as he did her mother, Lauren goes to the man who cared for her after her mother’s death, Harry Prentice. On the run and targeted by both Sykes and Perrin, Harry trains Lauren to use a gun, and to avoid capture, also giving her a number to call if he’s killed. That number takes her to Petra, an undercover agent embedded within the Perrin family. D.I. Toby Clarke doesn’t believe the Perrin families’ story that Charlie accidentally shot himself, but soon realizes he can’t trust his fellow officers. Can Clarke and Petra save Lauren?
There is no prologue here, but an opening that’s violent and terrifying. Lauren is a young woman caught between two very powerful crime families, including her own father who is willing to use her as a bargaining chip for power. Through the story, one understands why Lauren feels she can’t depend on anyone but herself. Lauren seems too capable for her actions until one remembers what she’s seen and done, and that she is fighting for her very life without knowing who she can trust.
This isn’t a book one puts down. It grabs one and keeps the reader captivated from beginning to end. Harry, Lauren’s, surrogate father, knows who these people are and of what they are capable, yet his loyalty to Lauren touches the emotions. At the same time, with his background, he is anything but a kindly uncle.
Although it is a police procedural, Lauren is the focus with the police almost being secondary characters. Yet their roles do play an important part. They are there and it will be interesting to see how their roles change as the series progresses. The betrayal within the police department is somewhat cliché, but it works and infuriates the reader.
SAFE is a police procedural that falls into the category of noir. It is dark and violent, skilled at creating a sense of fear and dread. It is also thoroughly engrossing and extremely fast-paced with an ending that is intriguing. “Kidnap” is the next book up and is certain to be on many readers’ lists.

Safe by Jane Adams is an addictive psychological crime thriller filled with shocking twists and turns and is the first book in the new DI Toby Clarke and DS Petra Merrow series. I loved this book and was gripped from the beginning till the end.

Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for the arc of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I will be honest and say I initially requested this book mistaking it for another one with a similar title. With under 300 pages, I figured I'd give this one a go anyway as the premise seemed interesting.

Lauren Sykes has spent her 17 years wishing to feel safe. But when your father murders your mother and gets away with it, where can you run to feel safe? She's about to find out, when she wrongs her father and the competing mob family and needs to run. Can she trust the one person she always has? Can she trust the police?

The premise of this story seemed face-paced and shocking, but I didn't find the book overly so. It seemed like Lauren was just stuck for a long time, waiting for something to happen. Once it finally did, it all barrel-rolled into the ending. I didn't really feel like there were many, if any, shocking twists, as they all kind of seemed like normal 'reactions' to what was happening.

The characters weren't really overly likeable. I felt for Lauren and her situation, but I was also really annoyed with her. I liked 'Pat', but didn't really connect with her. I would pick up another book by this author, in saying all this though. It was interesting and intriguing enough to keep my interest throughout to find out the outcome of the story.

A thank you to NetGalley for exchanging an honest review.

It's only fair to note that I somehow managed to request this book on accident and it feels wrong to review it. I'm just not interested in organized crime thrillers, so naturally this was of little interest to me - hence the two stars. However, there have been times when I went into a book dragging me feet, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. It never grabbed me enough to change my mind and my mind drifted to other things as I sat reading it. This was my reaction and it appears that I'm not the minority there, so won't go so far to say that there's nothing here, there's just nothing here for me.

This book had me hooked right from the first chapter. The storyline was well thought out, got straight to the point and was believable. While reading it, it reminded me of an ITV police drama. The characters are developed well, I particularly liked Petra and Clarke. Felt sorry for Lauren but she was very brave and intelligent for someone so young. This is definitely a fast paced, suspenseful thriller. At many points I thought Lauren was going to be caught and was curious to keep reading and see what was going to happen next. Thoroughly enjoyable read and looking forward to reading the next in the series.

Safe is the last thing Lauren feels.

The gangsters daughter is supposed to marry the other gangsters son. She shoots him when he attempts rape. Lauren is a very nature and lonely 17 year old. Jane Adams writes a story about how Lauren is finally free from her violent father and his almost psychopath is business dealings. I recommend this book to people who like a deep well crafted story.

Adams is absolutely fabulous!

This was a 1st read by this author & I cannot wait to read more! Safe is packed full of adrenaline, I couldn't swipe fast enough. To be a person in this predicament would be frightening but to be child knowing your father wants you dead by his own hands.... This is a well told story that will pull you in, I read it 2 days! Had to get to the end!!

One of the best thrillers for a long time!

This book will appeal to everyone who enjoys a good thriller. The heroine, a young but capable woman, brought up in a world of gangsters and violence, is afraid to trust anyone - and who can blame her? Well put together, and hard to put down. One of the best thrillers I've read!! Can't wait to read the next .....

The book was written well and I enjoyed it. Wasn't my favorite as I didn't feel connected to any of the characters but not sure why. Lauren was a pawn and she killed a mobster so now others are after her. Does she trust who she shouldn't or does she go back, lots of questions she needs to answer but first she needs to survive.

This was a complex story revealed from various points of view. There were plenty of villains, those expected but others not. I liked Clarke and Merrow and poor Lauren, who was particularly strong and brave despite her youth.

Well-written with plenty of interest and twists and turns.
