GRANT
For years I've lived in the shadow of my Father. Raised to obey and take over from him as the biggest crime boss in London. I was told what to do, who to be, and even who to marry, but that's where I drew the line. That's why I need Ava. She will be the perfect wife and my perfect revenge. All I need to do is break her and make her mine.

AVA
For years I have taken care of my Papa. I have given up everything to help him while he drinks and gambles away all we have. Now his life is on the line and I only have one thing left to give, me. Grant doesn't just want to marry me, he wants to change me and make me his perfect obedient wife, but that's where I draw the line. It’s then that I meet Ryder, he seems like my light in the darkness, but I'm not sure if he will be the savior I need or just another monster.

RYDER
For years I have followed the instructions of my Dad. He wanted me to join the Blakeman crime family and so I did. I'm on track to go right to the top and get everything I've ever wanted. That's when I meet Ava. The perfect girl, trapped in a dangerous world. She begs me to save her but it would mean destroying everything I've worked towards. Is she worth risking everything for? If I do save her, will she already be too broken?

Author’s Note.
This book is a dark romance featuring scenes not suitable for under 18’s. It is part of a duet and does end on a cliffhanger. There are trigger scenes which may not be suitable for some people.

Grant being the villain, Ryder is not the hero I would generally fall for. If Grant was an asshole, Ryder was just a plain infuriating pussy. Period!

Seriously I am just hoping the author stays true to her words :

“To my Dad and Grandad,
for showing me exactly what
a male role model should be like"

Because let be honest, I saw no male role model in here.

I just want that poor girl to have a HE without either one of them. She can be alone and independent for all I care.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Grand
CRACK “The first slap felt so fucking amazing. CRACK The second slap was to ensure she took me seriously.
Ava
“the excruciating pain I now have in my right cheek is a result of Grant slapping me. CRACK! This time the slap hits my other cheek.
And this might be presumptuous of me but I can already guess what Ryder's POV would look like.
I mean, when you repeat the cycle over and over, you start imagining shit
Ryder
Crack. That twit slapped her, fuck it's taking everything in me not to react and save my babygirl from danger. CRACK. FUCK. If he slaps her one more time, I will intervene and honest to god, he is good as dead. I will fuck him up boss or not.
sure.. of course I believe you Ryder
Personally I felt the book needed to be more refined, half of the monologues were just unnecessary and time consuming. Not to forget that it was going round and round about the same direction rather than carrying the story forward. It was exhausting
A dark and impacting story, that's hard to put down; Broken is an epic read about a possessive vengeful man who uses his power to persue his vile plans, a strong woman desperate for freedom and clarity before she is broken beyond repair, and the protective loyal man stuck in between them both.
I loved this book; it had excellent writing, good character development, an intriguing plot and made for a very interesting read.
Can't wait for the next one.
Recommended for 18+, has adult themes, as well as dark and triggering elements.
Broken is a dark,gritty book full of amazing scenes. When I picked it up I was instantly pulled into a world full of turmoil and dark times, I loved Ava she is so strong despite everything she has been and continues to go through. Ryder is her saviour and knight in a dark suit, Grant is her every nightmare come true.
Be prepared to fall in love with some characters while hating others. Tissues may be needed and panties will definitely be soaked.
STORY:
So I hate reviewing DNF books and can’t really assess to fully rate without completing. However, for now I will set this aside and maybe come back to it in a few weeks. I still have a tiny interest but I am frustrated.
I see that this was one of my favorite theme that was emerging. A daughter sacrificing herself for the sake of her father's gambling debt to a well known business aka crime family’s son. The additional star was for the beginning because it caught my interest with how Ava sacrifice herself and came to be in Grant’s home. The story is revolving around 3 characters, Grant, Ava and Ryder. Grant the crime father’s son, Ryder his right-hand man and Ava, the girl Grant decided to take/ manipulate for the debt.
I think my problem was because this was a slow burn, and I was anxious and impatient, my interest kept dwindling as I wanted and needed to know the dynamics of this triangle. You are getting a sense of who Grant is, the jerk of the jerks and Ryder as the savior and whom Ava really seems to like.
Again, can’t say much on the book, as it was DNF. I needed something to happen, but I was becoming impatient with how long it took.
****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.
Broken has excellent writing and plot, I couldn't put it down ones I started. I finished it in one night and was super tired at school the next day. This book is definitely an emotional journey for the characters, and to the reader, I cried so many times. Remember to pick up tissues.
Broken will end up in a cliffhanger and OMG the plot twist at the end. I didn't see that coming, and it made everything so much more amazing. I can't wait for more.
I loved how the author didn't make this a love-triangle book, even though that could have been possible. I loved this version better.
Broken is told from 3 points of view, Ava, Ryder and Grant. I loved each of them because that gave me more insight into their feelings and thoughts. It made me understand them better and see where they were coming from with their actions. It was fun to see their inner battles.
I hated and liked most of the characters. I just couldn't pick if they were good or bad. Some of them did horrible things I can never forgive, and some just stood aside while those horrible things were done. Some of them even had awful childhoods, and that's why they were as they were, but that makes me always question can that excuse things they make as adults.
Don't get me wrong even if I think these questions I, still love this book and the characters. All of those things just made them more real and more human. It makes me relate to them, and I can't wait to see what the next book has in store for them.
I love Ava, and I felt so bad for her for all of the things she had to endure. I hope she finds some happiness after all of this because I cried so many times.
Overall I enjoyed reading this book and will definitely pick up the next when it comes out. This is just what you need when you want something dark and a little different.
I received a free ARC copy of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions are my own.
"𝑰 𝒉𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒚 𝒌𝒏𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒄𝒖𝒆 𝒎𝒆, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕’𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏. 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒅, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒌𝒏𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒓."
What the heck just happened!? A cliffhanger!
I really really really liked the book. It was not like any other ordinary mafia book, the story was different, the twists were curvy and the end got me shocked because there were no answers given & for sure the next book is gonna be more amazing!
Their own secrets, the family secrets, planning and plotting; you name it, this has it.
Throughout the book I just felt bad, but near the end when Ava asks to die, that made me start sobbing. I really didn't appreciate Ryder's "trying" during the start of the story, but now I understand. Ava is not only sassy, sarcastic, beautiful, strong and determined but is also kind and thoughtful even after being physically and mentally abused.
I admire Ava's strength. Grant is a pyscho and hypocrite. His personality gives me chills and yes, I think he cannot love anybody. Ryder's personality is still out for the jury to decide (because there was a lot going on in the story for me to actually decide).
I am very excited for the next book!!!
.
.
Ava loves her father and is ready to forgo her life to get rid of the debt raised by him. Grant is an abused child who's now preparing to overtake his father's mafia business. Ryder is the head of the security of Grant and is also his friend.
"𝑻𝒘𝒐 𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒔 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒕𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓, 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒃𝒚 𝒐𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏. "
While Grant forces Ava to marry her, she develops feelings for Ryder which are reciprocated by him. Grant abuses Ava for something she hasn't done while Ryder can only watch.
Will Ava lose hope for her romance and life or will Ryder step in? Will Grant be hurt? (I definitely do hope so, he's pure evil)
You better put your seatbelt on before diving into this book - you're in for a twisty turny bumpy plot twist mind fuck ride!! When you think you know what's going on, you really really don't 🤣
Grant's darkness comes through straight away, and I'm not gonna lie, I was drawn to the asshole 🤣 not sure what that says about me! But he never really had a hope growing up the way he did, and that makes me feel for him, even though he is still an evil asshole and I'll probably get slated for sticking up for him 🙈
I am not playing around. She has to know I have a plan and if she thinks she is going to ruin it, she is very much mistaken.
Then we have Ryder, he's just so swoony 🥵 but his inner conflict over his head and his heart and what to do - his job or betray his boss and what he's worked so hard for - is just heartbreaking 💔
There's no way anyone like her would need to look tough because people should always protect beauties like her.
Ava is badass, she knows who she is and where her roots are, her head is screwed on and she knows not to fall for Grant's tricks and I love how she sticks up for herself and fights back and challenges him any chance she gets. But she's not stupid, she knows when self preservation is more important than fighting. Her inner dialogue is also hilarious, she's so witty and sassy 💁she's unapologetic about how she is and I love that! 🖤
You can dress me up in fancy shit but it doesn’t change who I am.
If he wants me as his wife, then he gets me as I am; feisty, stubborn, independent, and a fucking bitch when I want to be.
When I first read the blurb I was worried because I HATE love triangles, I always end up choosing the wrong one and then I'm just upset with how it ends, but I LOVE the way Emma has spun this book, it had me hooked from the get go, you'll cry, you'll laugh, you'll love and hate these characters. The character development and world building is insane!
Don't get me started on that ending though 🔪 I need answers Emma and I need them now!!!
I've read a lot of books that claim they are "dark" but barely dip their toes into that category of writing. I'll warn you now that Broken swan dives into it. I'm sure you'll get part way through this book and not believe me, shake your head and think that I'm sensitive, but you'll see that things progressively get worse as the book continues.
There are many intense situations in this book, and if you are easily triggered, be careful while you read. I'm not a sadist or anything, but the situations in this book are kind of like a car crash...you just can't look away. The story is harsh yet captivating and really keeps you on your toes while reading. The main characters Ava, Grant, and Ryder are very well thought out, intriguing, and sometimes confusing at the same time. You'll find yourself loving them or hating them on and off throughout the book, wondering why they make the decisions they do or even understanding them on a deeper level. I loved the multiple POVs that Emma included in this book. I don't normally enjoy seeing POVs from the "bad guy". Sometimes they work and sometimes they just seem like filler chapters to tease but never give any information. With Grant being a main character along with him having chapters to himself as well, it really opens up your eyes to see what he really has going on in his head. Let me be honest; the man is crazy, but when you see some of his past you can kind of relate to him or even if you can't, you can at least figure out that he has some serious issues stemming from his past that are now affecting his present. I'll forever love Ava and her strong and selfless personality and Ryder for his comforting silence, even if he made me disappointed a few times. The cliffhanger-yes a cliffhanger, this is a duet!- was surprising, intense, and emotional but sets up the next book very well. I can't wait to see the steps the characters take in the next book.
**Trigger warning - like seriously dark and depraved so if you have triggers for mental, emotional, physical abuse and adult situations, proceed with caution. **
I love reading dark romance and this one ticks off everything on my list. It is different in so many ways. I did not see a lot of the plot going the way it did. Ava is such a sweet soul and dang it she is tough as nails. However, will she break in the situation that she is in? Grant is seriously mental and sadistic but you also see a side to him that you will not expect. Ryder, well will he follow the rules that his boss gives him or follow his heart. So when I first started reading I was like oh this is not bad and then omg the shoe dropped and we took a turn for the worst. Then you see things looking up and then Emma decides to pump the brakes on that real quick. I was like I don't know if my heart can last any longer. I needed to know what was happening. We learn why Grant is the way that he is and why Ryder is wanting to learn the ropes. Everyones heart is on the line when we get to the end. What will happen now. There is a huge cliffhanger and I was banging my head on my pillow asking why Emma would do this to me. I cannot stress how dark this is with my warning so if you do read this book be prepared to find a dark heart hiding inside your body.
Emma Luna brings dark romance to a whole new level. I absolutely loved Broken and couldn’t seem to put it down. Every time I thought I had something figured out I found out how wrong I was. I was captivated right from the start and didn’t want it to end, and holy cliffhanger. It’s a definite must read and I can’t wait for book 2.
What the hell just happened?? No no.. Just no.. You can't leave us hanging like that..
Emma Luna is a new to me author and I didn't expect all that much when I started reading Broken but boy did she deliver..
Coming to the plot.. Our heroine Ava did not have the happiest childhood what with the gambling, irresponsible father and mother being dead at young age.. But she gets by relatively well..That is until one day her father That is until one day her father gets himself into trouble again and this time it's his life on line..So our girl is sold off to the son of the boss of a syndicate crime family..Grant is a sadistic a**hole who sets his sights on Ava is determined to break her.. However he has his reasons as we get to know in the later part of the book but that does not forgive what he did (I'm still seething about it by the way) And then we have Ryder the not- so- innocent bystander who does nothing even when Ava is slowly loosing herself in this madness and begs for his help.And even though Ryder too has his motives that totally does not exempt his behaviour.. All the three mcs have their own demons and Ava is invariably blamed for everything.. And the revelation at the end was shocking.. I didn't really see that one coming..Overall it was a dark, gritty, intense and emotional read and Can't wait for the next installment!!
*There are triggers(sexual abuse) so proceed with caution*
This book was not what I was expecting and I mean that in a good way as I love being pleasantly surprised when the author takes the novel in a different, but entertaining direction. Broken is a fast-paced, dark, and gritty romance that captured my attention from the beginning and keep me fully engaged until the very end. This book is not your usual mafia romance, which is one of the reasons it was so riveting. With its originality and twists & turns, I was unable to put it down.
I want to keep this vague, but know that Ava, Grant, and Ryder are fascinating characters. You will find yourself in a love-hate relationship with some of them, but in utilizing a tri-POV, the author provides some great insight as to why the characters make the decisions that they do. Grant is a tad unhinged, obsessive, and arrogant with a capital A. Ryder is seductive and intelligent with a protective streak. Ava is a spirited and resilient heroine. The dynamic between all of them is interesting and contribute to making this such a tantalizing read.
Broken is my first book by this author and it will definitely not be the last. I do believe Broken is her debut novel and I must say that I am impressed with the character development and intricate plot line. As this is book 1 in the Sins Of Our Fathers duet, the Broken does end in a cliffhanger. Typically, I loathe cliffhangers, but with this book, it is so worth it. Be forewarned that this is a dark romance and does contain potential triggers. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The plot is well flushed out, the characters are intriguing, and the story itself was entertaining. I definitely cannot wait to see how things will all play out in the next book!
First off if you have any triggers proceed with caution. This was a deep dive into the dark! The story kept me locked into it, could not stop reading it! It was like watching a train wreck! Ava is tough as nails, Grant is sadistic and Ryder follow the rules of his boss. Emma Luna wrote an emotional, well written, dark and gritty story. It was amazing! I am voluntarily leaving a review form an ARC that I was gifted by the author. Thank you for letting me read your work. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
This was recommended read as part of a dark/bully reading challenge. While it wasn't a terrible beginning, after about 50% of the way through I had to abandon it. It just didn't hold my attention enough. A GR friend and I both agreed it wasn't dark or interesting enough to hold our attention. While there seemed to be the potential for dark elements in the story, it was only touched upon but not acted out. There wasn't enough angst, chemistry or steam between the characters. Have to mark it DNF.
Warning- there's a cliffhanger and no book 2 yet. I'm so sad because I need more of this story!!
Grant and Ava at first I feel like have an enemies to lovers vibe, but then in comes Ryder. Swooooning.
Grant is a product of his environment. Arrogant bastard is putting it nicely. But he has a side he doesn't let anyone see. Can Grant redeem himself?
Ava feels her little world crumbling down. Her father is not the man she thought he was and apparently, neither was her mother. Ryder has secrets of his own too....
Can Ryder and Ava overcome the obstacles?
Not so patiently waiting for the sequel!
At the start, the book gives off major Beauty and the Beast type vibes. This amused me because the week before I was beta-ing (is that even a word?) Emma’s actual Beauty and the Beast retelling. Despite knowing that something’s not quite right, Ava agrees to marry Grant in order to save her father. But, only hours after doing so, she falls for Ryder, Grant’s security advisor and closest friend. The story could turn into an epic love triangle but instead follows a shockingly dark path.
Ava has smarts, particularly as she’s grown up on the wrong side of town. That said, she can’t entirely see through the façade Grant presents at the beginning of the story. In fact, considering how clever she can be, it takes her far too long to realise what’s happening around her. Or maybe her love for and desire to save her father from death is enough to let her denial take over? That said, there’s a huge well of strength hidden behind her “I don’t give a damn and I will not bend or be broken” attitude.
Grant is a vile excuse for a human being. He’s spoilt and more cold and calculating than the people around him could ever believe. But, at the same time, he’s strangely concerned about the state of his soul and whether, in the end, it will be redeemable. Years of abuse and manipulation by his father have skewed his notion of the values of right and wrong, so much so that he’s consumed by ideas of punishment and revenge.
My feelings on Ryder are all over the place. He gives off an “I can save the world and I’m part of a bigger plan” vibe but at the same time manages to seem weak. He continues to fail to save Ava from her impossible predicament, allowing his dedication to his job, his father, and future plans to overshadow his humanity. It makes sense when you read the final few chapters of the book, but I’m not sure that’s enough to redeem him in my eyes. We shall have to see how he behaves in the sequel.
The story is incredibly painful to read at times. Grant’s every interaction with Ava is designed to break her and, in some respects, it would have been an easier read if she’d allowed him to do just that from the start. Watching a strong young woman resist his every attack, to hold her head high through his humiliations and deny him the one thing he desires above all else, only to see her shatter into a million pieces towards the end of the book is heartbreaking. When you consider that, throughout all of this, Ava is dealing with the pain of loving somebody who can never choose her or put her first, you have to wonder about the person she will come to be by the end of the duet.
Broken is a book about secrets and how destructive hiding the truth can be. I spent my time digging into the little things characters said and thought, trying to figure out what the deeper meanings were behind their actions because there’s always more than meets the eye. If you can stomach the dark content (and I know this one won’t be for everyone) then you’re in for an amazing read. I can’t wait to get my hands on the conclusion.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ BROKEN
* If you need a character to take your anger out on, Grant is the one for you!
* It’ll keep you second-guessing whether you read it right or if there’s something you’re not quite getting.
Insufficient trigger warnings
Authors please if you can write a whole book can you please write a few descriptive sentences about what the book contains. The story started out pretty good and I Knew by the name broken that there would be some unsavory situations. The way that she was abused beat and r@ped was bad enough but to do it in front of his men calling her s*** and w**** to hurt andhumiliate her was too much abuse I don't care if you are over 18. If that wasn't enough Ryder let it happen. This kind of abuse may not bother some people but it keeps me up at night it's not what I read a romance even a dark romance for. I couldn't finish the book after that scene but it will still keep me up at night. Please have enough consideration for your readers to write a better description of your book so that we have a choice.
Wow!! I assumed this book was going to go one way and I was completely wrong!! This time though I loved the turn this book made!!
This book took me on a journey of ups, downs, frustration, and at times made me angry. I will say this did have a dark edge to it and if dark is not your thing don't read. But if you are like me and love a good dark romance then this book is for you!!
I found the book very interesting on how the author was able slowly developed each character piece by piece. Each main characters POV showed a little more of themselves and made me want to keep learning more.
I am so excited to read the next book in the series especially how this book ended. It is a cliffhanger, but oh how I didn't see that coming!!
It's really hard not to hate a character who thinks " I don’t want any of these opportunistic poor fucks thinking they can make some quick cash by stealing from me." in the first few pages. With all the rich people romance novels (almost all of them, poverty isn't really sexy) some classism is not exactly unexpected but this is some bullshit. Especially when he is there to pick up his love interest and his first thought is how much he hates everything about how she dresses. Since this ends on a cliffhanger I may give it another go when the series is complete. This time around I didn't even make it through the first chapter.
It's not even that he is an entitled little asshat, it's the utter cliché of the perfect looking rich asshole.
I started thinking I am loving this story line and then BAMMMMM the author throws in a few twists and turns and it made it even better!! I loved the storyline and the characters (and I loved having the multiple POV) honestly I don’t think there was one thing I didn’t like except the CLIFFY!!! just because I didn’t want it to end!
Holy smokes, guns, and girls...
The plot twists, the characters, the absolute world shattering story.
I want to loathe Grant, to smack sense into Ryder, and just hold Ava, but oh my all things literature.
Emma Luna does a one of a kind, phenomenal, out of the normal mafia story with this book.
It is dark, twisted, has scenes of rape, abuse, and violence. This book isn’t for the faint of heart, but truly a masterpiece.
It does end on a cliffhanger, but thank goodness especially with all the twists, the turns, and information revealed at the very end. I need a moment.
Difficult to stay interested
This book has a warning at the beginning. Not intended for people under 18, has triggers and read at own risk. I was disappointed because I didn’t think it was as dark and twisted as the warning indicated. Was it all unicorn and rainbows- no; but I’ve definitely read darker stuff. As strange as this might sound, I felt like it was over described like more words were used to set the scene then necessary and there wasn’t a lot of dialogue between characters that I found myself doing something I hardly do and that’s skim thru the chapters.
Ok so this ends on a cliffhanger so I will warn you now but it is so worth the read , I mean we have Grant who is taking over the crime family and decides he wants Ava so he can mold her into what he wants , and since her dad has debts she will be the payment, then we have Ryder who is a good guy and is stuck in the middle because he has earned his right to be where he is in the crime family but wants to help Ava before she becomes someone she isn't.
So freaking good!!!
