Inspired by Buddhist statues and everyday life, Nicholas K F Matte's "Poems and Haiku" is a compact collection of poetry that is historical and lyrical.

Herein, the poems concentrate on themes of travel, especially about the sightings of the large Buddhist statues in Japan and China with Matte's description that dances the rhythm.

Elsewhere, the haiku evokes a careful observation of nature and its inhabitants that makes the reader's mind wander and reflect. For instance, one of the haiku: lovely trees that sway in the valley, waiting for the rain to come, and the sun rays in the morning that heal.

Among the collections, my favorite poem is "In Caesarea," where Matte's attentiveness to the sea, air, sun, and moon shines through, drawing readers in with his introspective and captivating words. The poetic presentation of "Poems and Haiku" invites readers to learn about Matte's well-traveled perspective, sharing some of the great individuals of history, such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Dave Holland, Fudo Myoo, Ainu, and many others.

The inspirational aspect is palpable through Matte's appreciative and adventurous personality, seeing the world through his lens that leaves an imprint in his mind. His writings are a testament to his love of history. The inclusion of interesting names of places and people adds a unique blend to his book.

Fans of poetry will enjoy Nicholas K F Matte's "Poems and Haiku," which interweaves in his words a glimpse of the world, making this book a beautiful collection.
