"You all right?"My 3rd time at bat with Harry Crews. I've rounded tt up a bit to a 4, 'cause I admire Harry's spunk. This particular novel has a lot in it that works rather well (considering the wacky world the story inhabits). If it doesn't come together a bit better... well, in a way, how could it?
"Any reason I shouldn't be?"
"You just don't sound... you sound funny."
"Then laugh."
"... I think Providence must have sent you to me. Understand, you are a metaphor for most of what I believe about the world. ... All I'm saying is most people are standing around waiting to see somebody knock himself out--in a manner of speaking. It's human nature. ... Listen, did you ever hear or read about somebody standing on an eighth-floor ledge of a building in New York City? And who's down in the street? A huge crowd of people. And what are they shouting, darling mine? They're shouting *jump, jump, jump*. They want to see the poor bastard do the ultimate knockout on himself."Ultimately, Crews' novel serves as a rejection of that kind of mob mentality.
"I never learned a goddamn thing from a book."
"I'm not going to touch that remark."
“The writers job is to get naked,
To hide nothing.
To look away from nothing.
To look at it.
To not blink.
To be not embarrassed or shamed of it.
Strip it down and lets get down to where the blood is, the bone is.
Instead of hiding it with clothes and all kinds of other stuff, luxury!”
