Resolutely defiant in the face of all of Arkham’s attempts to psychoanalyze her, Harley Quinn is suddenly compelled to reveal some of her most vulnerable thoughts - and hints of her future -- when confronted with the simplest of prompts: “What does the color red mean to you?” Another stunningly beautiful story from the world of Stjepan Šejić’s bestselling HARLEEN!
Stjepan Šejić is a Croatian comic book writer and artist, known for his work on the series Witchblade, Aphrodite IX, Sunstone, and The Darkness among others.
Harley Quinn Black + White + Red #1 is arguably my favorite Harley Quinn issue I've read in a LONG time. This is everything that die-hard fans deserved; showing off both sides of a beloved character, including an aspect that has frequently been overlooked as of late. It is SO refreshing to see, and I cannot wait for more.
Bonus points for following the color palette defined by the title. Most of the issue is as you might have guess black and white. But there are pops of red, used to highlight and draw the focus. Tt's all extremely well done! Though I might be biased here since I love this style.
I just finished the Harley Quinn show and went looking for some more Harley. This issue didn’t disappoint — remembering Harley is a psychologist *and* the ~twist ending? Love it.
This is absolutely beautiful and you should read it if you have the slightest interest for Harley Quinn. It is a short story about Harley Quinn being treated in the Arkham Asylum after her break up with the Joker. She beautifully explains her personal feelings towards the color "red".
I highly recommend the works of Stjepan Sejic on Harley Quinn, especially if you never understood her story, because he gives her and her origin so much depth and dimension. On top of that his illustrations are just stunning.
5 stars I want more of the story of the Harley+Ivy team-up (especially if it has romance, which seems to be what the author is going for). Sadly this was quite short, but man, Šejić sure can write. And draw. The art was gorgeous as usual. I hope someone will green-light his Isley comic idea. I'd love to see that.
“Red is an innocent man’s blood on my glasses. Red is the color of my end.”
This short comic story is set in the world of Stjepan Šejić's Harleen, a comic I read last year and absolutely adored, and takes place some time after it ends. Harley Quinn is now imprisoned in Arkham Asylum and she and the Joker have broken up. The therapist who is talking to her poses her a simple question, "What does the colour red mean to you" and the story focuses around that question, revealing more and more about Šejić's brilliant interpretation of Harley.
There isn't much I can say about the comic without spoiling it completely, cause it is very short, only about 19 pages, but I truly loved it. The art is gorgeous, as it was in Harleen, and I just adore Šejić's take on Harley, her story, Gotham and Arkham. I loved seeing everything the colour red, which is a colour she is so well known for wearing, means to her - passion, anger, heartache, blood, art, beauty - and the way the story ends, with was so beautiful and ugh, it made me feel so many things. It makes me happy knowing that
I wish Šejić will write more Harley stories in the future. I would read a hundred Harley stories of his, honestly.
Sejic often winds an excellent story with exceptional artwork. No exceptions here. If anything I'm not sure the next in series can hold up as the artist/author changes.
I generally don't rate single issues of comics but after looking at the next few issues in this anthology I realized I don't actually care about any of them but still love this so here I am! Short and sweet but definitely a must-read if you liked Harleen. I hope he does another full length Harley title sometime in the future because I really enjoy the way he writes her and the art is gorgeous too.
This was such a beautiful (although short) story about Harley's time in Arkham Asylum and what the color red means to her. And it takes place after her breakup with Joker, so it takes place quite a bit after the events we see in Harleen.
As always, anything Stjepan Šejić writes/draws is so beautiful and I need more more more of this from him!
Hear me out, I’ve been wanting to read this for so long and now I’m on cloud nine. The art is already gorgeous. And then, you get the acknowledgment of Harley’s background and good writing. And then... BAM!! Red... Delicious.
Harley Quinn Black, White, Red je velmi příjemná jednohubka s moc hezkou pointou na závěr. Škoda jen, že kresba je nudná. Jinak mě tenhle projekt mile překvapil. 3,5*
19 pages and 1 color, and Sejic told such a strong story. I got chills. And I'm so sad he had to take a step back from DC to focus on his own health and stories. I would have loved his Isley comic, like I love all his stuff. He say so much with so little!
This is a natural follow up to the Harleen story arc with the same writer/artist Stjepan Sejic and I really hope to see more of him telling her story because I love everything about it. There is so much space between the end of Harleen and the beginning of this and the middle and the future are wide open.
I like that Harley's human side is again highlighted and her being a psychologist is given due and discussed. There is tidbits of stories and follow ups from Harleen that see maybe like the seeds of more stories- so here's to hoping.
Stjepan Sejic is a genius with his drawing and his placement and layout of panels are brilliant and poignant and the introduction of colour into the story is powerful and beautiful.
The only reason I am sitting this at 3.5 is that though it is beautiful and well told through writing and art it completely relies on outside knowledge. Which isn't bad and at 19 pages it is more the beginning/summary of a story than a story. But for what it is. It is lovely. It is fantastic.
Who is your favorite Batman villain? Sure, Joker is the normal reply. The brilliant mastermind who, even when locked away in Arham Asylum, manages to mess with Batman's Uber wealthy mind, but my favorite Batman villain is the crazy chick, Daddy's Lil' Monster, the psychotic psychiatrist who is so warped inside that she falls IN LOVE with Joker. Ah, well . . . The heart yearns for what it wants. Herein, Harley, in her own words, describes the color red as how it applies to her love life. And the art ain't bad, either.
So, Harleen is my favorite graphic novel. It's a tale of Hell through good intentions. This sequel - which is as near as I can tell, the only one written by the original writer Stjepan Sejic is beautifully done just like Harleen. But it's unnecessary. It attempts to bring Dr Quinzel a happy ending that, by the time we reach the end of Harleen, isn't something she wants. Definitely worthy of the read for any Harleen fan but I won't read it twice.
It’s a part of an anthology. However I’m 100% in to see how this would unfold. Despite not being a fan of Harley Quinn’s stories, her and Ivy’s dynamic have always left me wanting more. Moreover, I do believe that Stjepan Sejic would develop this relationship in greatly interesting way.
Visually minimalistic but engaging, we have Harley as an inpatient at Arkham being treatment resistant and poetically dark at the same time, before the unsurprising escape... even the treatment team we’re waiting for it to happen, panels in advance.
