Ussher Family #1

The Salvation of Eli Ussher

Rate this book
Out on the windswept plains, a captive boy is torn from his Comanche family and returned to the world of the white man — a world he finds even more cruel and unforgiving than the wild western frontier. In 1870s Texas, with the Indians all but defeated, a lone white captive is surrendered by Comanches to the Indian agent at Fort Sill. All the boy remembers about the family he was born to is that they were murdered in the raid when he was taken prisoner seven winters earlier. Unable to recall his birth name or the English he used to speak, he recognizes only his Comanche name, Broken Wing. At the fort he’s renamed Johnny and adopted by a man who vows to beat every trace of Indian from the boy. In a night of violence, his new father dies and soon Johnny’s on the run, wanted for murder. Caught between two worlds and unwelcome in both, Johnny sets out to forge a new life. He finds solace among the wild mustang horses with whom he feels a kinship. But when the law catches up with him he learns everything he believed about his family is false. And when he’s put on trial for murder he discovers prejudice rather than the truth could see him hang. "A most creative and unique western ... certainly the most entertaining story this summer." Enjoy first installment of this epic new series, a classic Western Family Saga from Sam Scott. No profanity or swearing, and always a happily ever after ending.

I have been a follower of Mr. Scott from day one of my Kindle usage, but this outstanding compassionately motivated story is one of his very best. Eli is definitely worthy of following and the discovery of his brother is more than heartwarming entertainment!

Definitely five stars worthy, and more but we know the limitations! Some of the most compelling storylines I have ever read. A very compassionately entertaining revelation of how some of our forefathers were treated, as they continuously faced the Indians, who defended the loss of their lands! Too, the character selections could not have been more perfectly selected for their commanding assignments from beginning to end.
The reunification of Johnny (Eli), and his brother Grady, certainly was an outstanding revelation, and quiet coincidental, which, in itself was definitely a heartwarming incident in its self! Johnny believed himself to be the sole survivor of his family, after the initial Indian attack of their ranch. He was taken by the Comanche completely unaware his brother have been captured by the Kiowa. Very heartwarming, but especially touching episodes from beginning to end!
Most definitely recommend this realistically motivated renditions of old American western folklore adventures, and the never ending suspenseful episodes throughout the entire book! There are never ending descriptive storylines that just reaches out and grabs your undivided attention from beginning to end. Even most of you non-western enthusiasts will find yourselves completely mesmerized by the authenticity of the Author's enviable ability to have you becoming totally engrossed with Johnny, and his many ongoing exploits! Failure to follow Johnny will, most definitely, be your loss!!!😃

The Salvation Salvation of Eli Ussher: A Western Frontier Saga (Ussher Family Book 1)

Broken Wing was the name he was known by. Now, his life before he was taken by the Indians was forgotten, after all he was, maybe , seven when he was taken. Now the Blue Coates tell his people that all white captives must be returned, and that was what he was, white. Give to a man who was cruel and wicked, the only thing he could think about , at first, was to run away. Then he realized that if he was to survive in the white world, that he needed to learn to read and write..That didn't mean he had to stay, some things are just inevitable. Really Great Read!!!

This is a well written story of a 8 year old boy abducted by the Comanche in 1870’s Texas. Taken to Ft Sill, young Eli is sent with a farmer to Parker County, Texas. Treated like a a slave, he is forced to defend himself and flee. He later meets a black horse breaker and quickly becomes an accomplished mustanger. He’s later arrested for the murder of the farmer and finds his older brother whom he had thought dead before being cleared by reason of self defense. A really interesting story with the hint of a future romance, this is a must read.

A Powerful Western Adventure

This is an authentic story of a journey taken by a child abducted by Comanche, integrated into the tribe then forcibly removed and expected to suddenly become a white person again. He has forgotten his original language, customs and even his name. He is subjected to extreme prejudice and cruelty but remains strong as he rebuilds himself by the unexpected help of new companions. This book was very engaging, refreshing and totally worth reading.

White Indian

A good read about a boy captured by the Indians. Pulled from the only family he knows he is returned to the foreign white people for , essentially, reeducation. He interacts with a white woman who had been captured the Kiowas. A good story about the two different dynamics.

Elite Ussher..Broken Wing..Johnny...then Johnny Ghoulson...Johnny Gee then back to his birth name! But the story that is told about this young mans life is worth every word written! Mr Scott has certainly captured the feelings and life of a child abducted by Indians!

Lots of twists and turns in this one. The story line took a while to grab me, and there were times early on that I was tempted to put this one back on the shelf. After I had gotten into the story, there were times that the story would lag a bit, but then one of those turns would show up and pull you back into the story.

Excellent book - couldn't put it down. Never boring or slow.

I really liked this storyline. It rang true. The characters rang true. Just like today's times, people are judgemental, cruel and prejudiced. Thankfully there are good people interspersed among us - both then and now. Can't wait to continue this saga.

Excellent story. Hard to put down.

This book tells the story of a boy who was taken by Comanche and eventually returned to white men. The prejudice against him runs throughout the story. The horses he encounters, how he trains them, and the gentleness he demonstrates with them tells what kind of man he will be. I really liked the characters, and enjoyed reading this book.

An excellent narrative that starts off very slow but soon becomes exciting. The title is misleading as it is not a book about religious salvation. Notwithstanding, it is a clean profanity and sex free novel. Something very hard to find these days.

Excellent book

A real insight into what life was really like living in a country run by white mans' greed. Every day folk had to live with the consequences of the natives being lied to and cheated. Not for the faint hearted. Can't wait for the next installment.

It’s a good’un

It’s a grabber. When I had to stop to do a chore I was loathe to do it. I believe that you can’t get realism and authenticity like this without research and hard work.

Pure enjoyment

An excellent story of how a boy grows out of tradegy. Parents killed by indians, raise with them for seven years. He had to start all over, bad adoptive parent before he found his way. Learn to train horses and then find love.

A Great Series

If you enjoy western stories with a little romance and some action, you will like this series. Mr Scott writes a good series about the Issuer family. I like that he wrote a book on each member of the family.

Excellent story!!

All the good parts of a good western story, with the freeing of a deputy by the accused as a cherry. Why wasn't that brought up at the trial?
