The Marked #2

Deadly Secrets

Rate this book
After risking my life to save the woman who raised me, I thought I would finally be forgiven, my magic would be mine again, and I would no longer have to live in hiding.

I was dead wrong.

I also thought that this would be my biggest problem. Wrong again.

Logan is nowhere to be found. Marcus has managed to get away, and I am still breathing, though he'd clearly meant to kill me. Not to mention that I can see with my left eye again after four long years.

But if an army couldn't stop Marcus, who would?

Good ole Ruby Monroe.

The Magian Ministry thinks I am the only one who can get close enough to hurt him because I'm protected. I think they are way too eager to throw me to the wolves. Will I accept their crazy offer to go after Marcus? Hell yeah. No way can I sit back and watch while they let him get away again.

But in my search for Marcus, I find much more than I bargained for. The deadly secrets that come to light could destroy everything the magians had worked so hard to build. The more I know, the less I understand, but I'll be damned if I don't get to the bottom of this once and for all.

ONE EARTH SHAKING THRILL RIDE!!!
Dang demons! Hoxa not only brought it, she wiped the floor with this riveting dynamo, bringing out the heavy artillery locked and loaded, rocking this gem to it's core, blasting this bad boy to life spectacularly. Bearing the burdens and towing the line, delivering this action packed, pulse racing, heart pounding, adrenaline pumping, page flipping bombshell, booting this little jewel to a whole new realm. Shattering the boundaries and breaking the lines, limitations are stretched and manipulated, kicking this baby into overdrive, slamming it into a frenzy with incredible results, putting our characters through their paces, testing them in ways they could have never imagined. A spinning vortex chocked-full of quirky mishaps and surprising happenstance propel every emotion bursting into play front and center. Shenanigans runs rampant and havoc is rife, rolling with the drama, turmoil, revelations, intrigue, danger, spiraling suspense and nerve racking situations, along with a boatload of secrets, you have one intoxicating masterpiece. The characters are complex and authentic with depth and traits that blend and flow, transforming into genuine relatable personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and depictions creating a colorful backdrop that makes the storyline pop. Amazing job Hoxa, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.

Ruby awakens from her fight with Marcus. She doesn't understand how she survived when his spell should have killed her. She is also able to see from her eye but she is having strange side effects. Logan is the one to take her to the woman that healed her. She really wants to go after him. She goes to the one place she knows he will be. She goes to her Nana's Enclave, he wasn't there.
Ruby sees her Nana, but what happens ripped Ruby apart. Ruby feels like everything with her Nana was a lie. The Magican Ministry comes to take her. They get far due to Naomi waiting outside for her. Apparently she is only wanted for questioning, Ford wants to speak with her.
Ford and Ruby strike a deal, she gets her freedom if she goes after Marcus with the help of the Ministry. Ruby decides to take the deal. Everyone things that she is protected again Marcus's magic, so she will be able to end him.
Things will not go smoothly for Ruby. She will try to find Logan with out success. That she will make a deal with some one she should not. She will be running in circles trying find out the truth about Ford's old enclave, her father and Marcus.

This book has you hooked as soon as you start reading. The author keeps up the action, the intrigue and more. There is so much that goes for this character. You will watch her grow and become stronger for everything. I am eagerly waiting for the next book. I recommend reading this book/ series

Good

This is the second book in the trilogy, and it continues on directly from where book one ended. You need to have read book one to read this.
**Cliffhanger warning**

Ruby managed to survive Marcus’ attack, but now he, Dumont, and Ruby’s companion Logan are all missing.
While trying to find Logan and stop Marcus’ rampage, Ruby finds herself working with the enemy... the ministry itself. All they want is for Ruby to stop Marcus, something that’s far easier said than done. Working around half truths, secretive mages, and a conspiracy that may have involved her father, Ruby struggles to figure it all out.

This book ends on a cliffhanger, though fortunately the following book is already out.

It’s a fast paced story, typical of a D. N. Hoxa book. The world building is excellent, the characters fascinating. It makes for an enjoyable read.
There is no romance in this book, putting it squarely in the Urban Fantasy realm. Fans of UF and PNR will probably enjoy this series.

Ruby is once more on her own to save the world. I wished she would eat more proper food, where is she getting the energy from to get going??

I'm totally confused about Nana, is she good, is she evil? By now it's clear Ford's enclave students did something but who is the really bad guy?

I hope we haven't seen the last of Logan, I really liked him in book 1 but Ruby's new partner is cute too!

There is so much potential in this story that I wonder how much more books there'll be.
The end of this one leaves you hanging, not a complete cliffhanger but far from resolving any of the puzzles.

Rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. Again...OMG!! We left off with Ruby trusting her instincts and now they are on high alert. After a series of unfortunate events that lead her to where she is, its no wonder Ruby can only rely on herself. Being told lies after lies after lies takes a toll on a person. Ruby continues after the bad guy but it's gotten a whole lot bigger with strange twists and demon dogs. some truths are revealed to Ruby but something is amiss with them. Ruby will seek out the truth with guns blazing...or should I say Chakras hot and ready to do damage.

Deadly Secrets (The Marked Book, #2), my second read/listen from author D.N. Hoxa, an author I'd wanted to read for some time and never got around to until I read Blood and Fire (The Marked #1). After reading it I went right out & got this book and I'm voluntarily reading & reviewing it because every great book needs reviews. I look forward to reading more from this author and I definitely need to read more in this series, in fact next up is Death Marked (The Marked Book 3)! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

I absolutely became invested in Ruby and her journey early in Book 1 - Book 2 just makes me love her more. She is everything I love in a female lead - strong, sassy, flawed but nor afraid to take chances. This journey is a fast paced thrill ride with great characters and not your ordinary creatures. Th author spoons out just enough answers but leaves us with more questions to be answered. I promise you will not want to put this book down. I can't wait to see where the author takes Ruby next

The perfect ingredients all perfectly combined. I love Ruby. She’s just the sort of sassy kick-ass heroine I drool over and gravitate towards. She’s perfectly written in a story with a fantastic big baddie, great supporting cast and addictive page-turner of a plot. This book 2 has proven that the series is gonna be a memorable saga. I’m already drooling over book 3 and happily highly recommend this book 2.

Okay

I didn't like this one nearly as much as the first one.

Logan barely made an appearance in it, which was very disappointing.

There was still a lot of action, but no answers really. It was just more and more clues that just led to more and more questions. So, nothing substantial really happened. I think it was just setting up for the next one really.

Not AS interesting as the first one, but still a quick read.

Ruby is back and confused

Unfortunately, so am I. An interesting take on magic and mystery but this story feels and reads like a bridge between novels. Things happen but the story never went anywhere. Hopefully this was a set up fire a great 3rd book. Bonus star for the world and characters but it reads like a 2.5 or 3 star misadventure as well as lacking the interpersonal dynamics that made the first novel great.

Good

There is some crazy magic being used in this book. The person using this magic got away from Ruby in the first book and now she is asked to look for him again. Even though she almost died the first time, Ruby can’t say no to looking for him again. unfortunately, she does not have Logan to help her this time. Ruby also takes on a side job. She is asked to find and return a jewel. No problem, right? Well, she finds more than she expects and is almost killed in the process.

Oh my goodness! I'm just going to start this by saying that the cliffhanger of the ending here should be illegal.

At first this was a little slow, and lacked a lot of action from the first one. But as the mystery (or should that be plural?) unfolds, I needed to turn pages faster and faster. I love Ruby, this series, and this author. More please!

Deadly Secrets, book 2 of The Marked series, is an ebook I downloaded from Kindle Unlimited. Wow, lots of plot twists and new reveals made this story a really good read, I enjoyed this more than the first book. I love the tension and conflict between the characters.

I think the most important thing here is that the country in South America is spelled Colombia with two "O"s and no "U". The business, which sells calling equipment and jackets and such, is spelled Columbia.

Never finished

Hoax tells a good story but never finishes them. The big ending seems to cook down to a referral to another book.
