Still, he somehow manages to get past her walls and Kate finds him harder and harder to resist. Will Kate find happiness once again with this charming stranger, or can Callum find a way to win back his “Katie”. Does the answer lie, Somewhere Only They Know?
Several weeks of not having read anything and my first attempt is to pick up a cheater book - a trope that I loathe like nothing else! *sigh*. I honestly don't know what possessed me to even attempt to read this, but let's just say temporary insanity, a nice cover and leave at that....
First of, this is a very emotional story about a married couple who suffer a tragic loss in the form of their little girl who died in a car crash by a drunk driver when heroine was driving and couldn't save her. The guilt & despair of that one incident caused the heroine to shut down completely and in the most part, destroy her marriage.
Up until that tragic moment, Katie & Callum had a perfect marriage. They were each other's soulmate and very much in love, but the guilt & despair that they both feel about losing their precious daughter, causes Katie to shut down completely and continue pushing Callum away for many months. It is in one of these instances where Callum had enough of her pushing him away that he went to a bar and got drunk and picked up a stranger to f**k.
He then goes home and begs Katie for forgiveness - explaining that in his drunk haze & loneliness, he just wanted to feel alive for one moment. This betrayal is the final nail of the coffin for Katie so she packs up and leaves.
We then have her moving from NY to Seattle where she takes up with Finn - a man who is all over her - and yes, she has sex with him multiple of times and even begins to be happy & think of moving on with him. Until, that is, Callum finds her and begs her to take him back & come home.
If not for the cheating, I would have enjoyed this one so much because it is told so emotionally that you literally feel the pain & heartache that both MCs are going through. I especially felt Collum's pain having to see his wife constantly push him away, not be able to touch her or see a smile on her face, etc. And then to see her do all those things and having sex with OM, it was heart wrenching.
The heroine though ticked me off - especially towards the last few chapters. I got her pain & guilt she felt that she didn't do enough to save her daughter, but to go from having a loving husband and not being able to allow him to touch her at all, to smiling, touching & having sex with OM and thinking of a future with him so fast??? Nope. And then she stuffs everything up again close to the end and that pissed me off! For once, I wanted the Hero to kick heroine to the curb because she truly didn't deserve him! She annoyed the beejeeves out of me! And this is why I need to stay away from these tropes for ever!
Kate closed her eyes, as the mental image of Callum with another woman, invaded her mind and her stomach heaved. Them touching, kissing, it was as clear in her mind as if she had seen them with her own eyes, and it was so painful to think about. Then suddenly, the memory of her and Finn, came crashing into her head, replacing the images of Callum with some faceless woman. She remembered his touch, his kiss, even the words he said.
Kate remembered how, for the first time in so long, she felt alive. She slammed down those thoughts and tried to push them out of her head.
-----
“I slept with Finn,” she said, opening her eyes and looking at Callum. She held her breath as her words washed over him, and her heart slammed against her chest when he suddenly dropped his hands from her face and stood up.
“You and him…” Callum said, closing his eyes and trying to keep his breathing steady and even, despite the rage that was suddenly building inside him.
Every ounce of his being told him, he had no right to be upset, but he was. He was angry and very hurt. He closed his eyes, and the image of the asshole guy, touching his wife, kissing her, invaded his mind and made his stomach heave. He turned away from Kate and paced up and down her living room.
“Callum, I’m sorry,” Kate said, as she watched him stalk up and down like a caged animal. Hot salty tears quickly pooled in her eyes.
“Did you sleep with him as payback?” He asked when he finally stopped pacing and turned back to look at Kate.
“No!” Kate exclaimed, completely floored by his reaction. She could feel the blood drain from her body, as a sudden fit of shaking gripped her.
“Then why, Kate?” Callum asked, moving closer to her. “Why him? Eleven months, you shut me out. You couldn’t bear to let me touch you. You know this guy, five fucking minutes, and you…and him…”
Callum pushed his hands through his hair in sheer frustration as he turned away from Kate once again. Kate rose to her feet slowly and took a step closer to Callum.
“Callum, I thought we were over,” Kate replied, trying to explain what had happened. “I hadn’t heard from you in days, and I thought you had finally let me go.”
“YOU LEFT ME, KATE!” Callum snapped back. “I called you for days and days. I was sick with fear and worry. When James found you, I thought, if I came here, I would make you see sense. Then I saw you with him.”
-----
“It wasn’t just one time, was it?” He asked, even though she knew he already knew the answer. Kate just shook her head.
Callum immediately took a step back.
“Jesus, Kate,” Callum said, as he turned away from her.
“Callum, I’m sorry,” Kate said, unsure of what else she should say.
“Kate, I know I fucked up,” Callum said, as he began to pace up and down once again. “Shit, if I had just been the man you married, the man you needed. We would have never got to this point. I know all this, but I don’t know how I am supposed to deal with it.”
“Callum, I thought we were over,” Kate repeated once again. “I was lonely.”
Happy couple loses their child. Wife pushes the hub away for 11 months. He goes out and has a ONS. He tells wife, wife leaves. She then sleeps with OM a few times and she’s happy again. Hub chases her, still wants her back…
I kinda want to read this cheating book because for once, the h also sleeps with the Om after the H cheats, and she’s fucking happy with the om!
Why is HIS CHEATING on her with a woman he deliberately goes to the bar to pick up and fuck, HER FAULT????
The husband is so entitled to sex and weak minded that while his wife is grieving the death of their daughter he rationalizes cheating and sticking his dick in another woman because she won't pay him any attention.
He deliberately went to a bar to find someone to fuck so he could "feel alive", kissed her, let her touch him, and fucked her and made it all seem like it was it was Kate's fault. HUH??
Literally right after he fucks OW he crawls into bed and attempts to fuck Kate which is SICK.
No one OWES you sex to the point of excusing cheating. ATP DIVORCE before you cheat.
She WAS GRIEVING their daughter and he went out and cheated. Then she feels bad for having sex with OM when THEY WERE SEPARATED. HE fucked around on their vows and feels no remorse but she has sex with another man while their separated and she's trying to move on with their life and SHE FEELS BAD?? WHAT. THE. FUCK.
He had no right to be hurt. I wish she could have fucked OM in front of him to cause her a fraction of the pain that he caused her.
And then this double standard: "The very thought made Callum feel physically sick. The thought of someone else holding her, touching her. He quickly tried to push the thought from his mind, but he couldn’t.
How would he ever survive if she found someone new? The answer was simple; he couldn’t. She was his life. She was his everything." It was so easy to stick his dick into someone else while his "everything" was grieving and crying over their dead child.
Callum was such a piece of shit. Rationalizing stepping out on his grieving wife to fuck an OW and then getting upset that Kate had a relationship with another man while they were separated is NOT THE SAME THING. He fucked another person while they were still married and then climbed into bed with Kate without even showering OW off. FUCKING GROSS.
Cheating deserves consequences. Callum should have died alone while Kate moved on. But instead he faced ZERO consequences and a pat on the back for cheating on Kate. Also fuck Olly. No sense of loyalty from her "best friend"
Marriage in crisis Death of a child Cheating Husband cheats on wife with OW Wife leaves him and sleeps with OM during separation HEA
-100/5🌟So glad I pirated, none of you bitches who write shit like this deserve any money from readers.😂
Fuck does the patriarchy have a hold on some of you authors. You WOULD let a man walk you like a dog and then forgive him. I'm manifesting a man like this for you to come an fuck up your life so that it may teach you some empathy and lose some of the ability to excuse men's shitty behaviors y'all love to write about so much.
Callum cheats on his wife Kate her while she's at home crying over their dead daughter.
Picture this, while she's in the bathroom crying Callum goes to a bar, finds a woman to fuck and then just says it's a mistake.
He was enjoying another woman flirt with him, kiss him, touch him, suck his dick, and was INSIDE OF HER while Kate CRIED HERSELF TO SLEEP OVER THEIR DEAD DAUGHTER. HE PUT HIS COCK INSIDE OF ANOTHER WOMAN WHILE SHE WAS CRYING AT HOME.
Kate sleeps with Finn after they have SEPARATED and she explicitly tells him their marriage is OVER and leaves the state to start over following HIS INFIDELITY.
I'm gonna need y'all to have the same standards for men as you do women.
Those two things are not the same. AT ALL.
May the authors who glorify this type of behavior from men also experience this level of betrayal from their partners and may the affair partner be someone close to you.
Somewhere only we know is a book that tears at the heart. Holly managed to capture the heartache and tears of losing a loved one and managed to show how given time you can learn to move forward. Excellent read. Loved every word.
