I have had this crime thriller book for quite sometime sitting on my bookshelf and have decided it’s time I read it.
Well what I can tell you all is this creepy story was fast paced and the author kept me guessing who was behind this twist.
Lindsey Ryan lives with her dog who runs from room to room barking when he hear something or is her dog warning Lindsey that someone is there at the house?
Home for Lindsey is a one bedroom cottage which looked like it belonged to countryside, instead of Cork City.
Lindsey had the feeling someone was watching her, then the scary things start to appear.
The fourth note in many weeks that she found stuck to her front door that each word was made up of individual letters cut out of a magazine that said LYING BITCH.
Things start to get a bit creepy with a wreath leaning up beside her front door with a card saying Rest in Peace.
While Lindsey is at work four photos have been sent to her office with the words on the back of each photo OH SO CARING BITCH.
I couldn’t rest until I knew why these notes were left for Lindsey Ryan to find and why?

I don't think that it does justice to 'While Nobody Is Watching' to describe it as a psychological thriller. A thriller sets out to thrill. A psychological thriller sets out to mess with the reader's expectations and to harness irrational or pathological behaviour to create tension, spring surprise and strengthen the thrill the reader feels. I don't think that that's what this book sets out to do.
Yes, the main character is under threat from an unknown person and yes that threat escalated steadily and kept me guessing about its source and turning the pages to find out what would happen next, so I can see why the thriller label might be used
The thing is, I read 'While Nobody Is Watching' as a fundamentally honest book that gives an unflinching account of what PTSD does to Lindsey Ryan, an ex-soldier who now works with troubled kids in Cork. It speaks to the guilt of having survived, the dislocation from no longer being in the Army with people who understand what you've been through, the delusions and nightmares that make you fear for your sanity, the depression that makes you want to just make everything stop, the mood swings that drive risk-taking behaviour, and the embarrassment and anxiety that carrying visible physical scars across much of your body cause.
This is a book that manages to be high on authenticity without feeling like a lecture or a documentary because the authenticity centres around Lindsey Ryan herself. You see her at her worst and at her best. She feels real in a way that pushes her out of the typical thriller role of competent woman in distress and makes her into an individual who is doing her best with what she has.
I liked that nothing about Lindsey is romanticised and, by the end, nothing is hidden. The relationships between her and her ex-army comrades feel real and strong but it doesn't feel like top-gun bullshit. These are ordinary people who have bonded because they've been through hell together and come out the other side. The relationships that Lindsey has with the kids also feel real. there are no Hallmark moments here, just a believable mix of strong emotions, big problems and occasional small wins.
The thriller element of the book seems to me mainly to be there to drive Lindsey to face up to the challenges in her life, to decide if she has the desire and the will to continue to live and to get her to reach out to the people around her to regain connections that will help her deal with her pain.
What I took away from reading the book wasn't the solution to who was threatening Lindsey and why but the feeling of having met, understood and liked a woman who was facing up to some serious problems.
When the second Lindsey Ryan book, 'The Invisible', is published this month, I'll be buying it not because I'm looking for a psychological thriller but because I want to know what Lindsey Ryan does next.

I went in expecting a stalker thriller, which is silly because I knew to expect more from Michelle Dunne. Lindsey Ryan carries this whole book. Such a phenomenal character! Smart as hell, funny, deeply caring, complex, and wonderfully human. Her PTSD is written very naturally, and with a specificity that only comes from someone who’s actually lived it. That’s the benefit of reading authors that pour from their lived experiences.
The crime/mystery of it all is almost secondary. What kept me hooked was watching Lindsey try to function while her mind keeps dragging her back to the Golan Heights. Her character is so well-written that I almost didn’t care what was going on around her. I just wanted to keep hanging out 😂. That is what I’ve come to love about Michelle Dunne’s writing - you will ALWAYS find someone to root for. Frank the service dog might be the most consistently good thing in this book and it might be a tie between him and Lindsey for best character.
I had absolutely no idea what to expect from the conclusion of the story. Every twist felt earned, building naturally from the suspense rather than existing just for shock value. More importantly, they landed because I genuinely cared about the characters.
Without fail, Michelle Dunne manages to give me goosebumps at least once in every book she writes. It’s the combination of how deeply invested I become in her characters and the fact that I can never predict where she’s taking the story. You don’t just want to know what happens, you truly care about what happens to these people, and that’s what makes the ending so impactful.
I swear, Michelle Dunne is way too underrated. Her books deserve to be at the top of every bestseller list.

While Nobody is Watching tells of a woman who had a promising career as a soldier when her life took a drastic turn. While stationed in Syria, a little girl accidentally set off an IED, killing two and seriously injuring Lindsey. Lindsey not only wrongly blames herself for what happened but also has a severe case of PTSD.
Three years later, Lindsey is back home in Ireland, working in a new career mentoring the troubled youth of Cork city. The only one who truly understands what she’s become is her service dog, Frank. Oh, how I loved Frank! He's a seven-year-old German shepherd who would walk through fire for her, and she would do the same for him.
I don't want to write any spoilers so all I can say is that the next chapters of Lindsey's life are anything but warm and cozy. I like Linds very much. I love Frank. I really hope this turns out to be a series!!

While Nobody is Watching is my first but certainly not my last read by this author. Lindsey is suffering from ptsd after being seriously injured while on duty. While dealing with this she needs to deal with a stalker. She is a strong likeable character.
When I wasn’t reading this story I was thinking about it.. a good sign that it’s grabbed me hook, line and sinker.
This is a really well written thought provoking story that will stay with me for a long time.

Delighted to have read this psychological thriller set in my home city of Cork. The place and street names sprinkled throughout the book were familiar to me, and I could visualise the row of houses where the main character (Lindsey) lives, having passed by many times.
The character of ex-soldier Lindsey is brilliantly demonstrated through her actions and behaviour. Despite dealing with PTSD, insomnia, a challenging work environment and an anonymous stalker with ominous intentions, she is a tough cookie with a warm heart and an ability to draw people closer to her even when she's trying to push them away.
The author has an enviable skill with writing dialogue and really does justice to showing the impact mental health challenges and trauma can have on a personality. I was really drawn into the story, and guessing until close to the end who the mysterious stalker was and their motivation. Definitely recommended even if you're not from Cork!

A well written novel with a serious account of the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, suffered by so many troops and emergency staff that have seen the effects of insurgents and the killer IEDs. The book highlights the effects upon behaviour, the bouts of binge drinking, use of drugs and the relationship and sexual behaviour. The question raises many issues for me such as should someone with these issues be in charge of the activities of young people, court orders or not? On top of this were the stalker and Lindsey Ryan's dismissal of trying to accept help to protect herself and clinging to support former military team members who all have similar issues and yet still keeping her distance.
Did I like this book? Yes, I did but was it entertainment? No, it wasn't. What it was is a thought provoking novel on serious issues but raising more questions than there are answers. Well done to Michelle Dunne.

What a touching, heartbreaking story. I did not expect this to be the story line at all, I was expecting something completely different and I don’t know why 🤷🏼♀️.
I don’t have any knowledge in the field of PTSD but I’ve seen in on Greys Anatomy (🙈 the billion times I’ve watched it) so I have a rough idea of what is involved and how it affects people. It’s also something I deal with in my job IRL but not a lot… not enough to give an insight on it.

Lindsey Ryan returned from a tour of duty with PTSD following a harrowing event out on patrol in the Golan Heights. Left with life long scars, both physical and emotional, Lindsey has now left the army and works with the disenfranchised in the heart of Cork City. On a daily basis Lindsey deals with children and teenagers from troubled homes encompassing all the pain and anger that comes with them. Lindsey treats these youths with respect and a willingness to listen and in some cases she has success but more often than not it is a constant uphill battle with red tape and with families that are beyond help. Tenacious and tough Lindsey evokes calmness and a sense of control but, underneath it all, Lindsey still struggles with flashing nightmares and images from that dreadful day three years previously when her life changed forever. Michelle Dunne is ex-army, having spent time in the Lebanon, thus bringing her own personal experiences and knowledge to Lindsey’s story which add a great depth to her character. It all feels very convincing. Michelle wrote a character piece about Lindsey Ryan for my blog a few months back giving us all a wonderful insight into Lindsey’s makeup
‘She doesn’t feel she deserves a so called “better life”. They were meant for people who were dealt a bad hand through no fault of their own, like the kids that she worked with. They deserved so much better and the soldier in her refused to stand back and watch the injustices that were served up to them. Without drawing attention to herself, Lindsey will stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves, all the while trying to protect her solitary existence. This new role in life was possibly the only thing keeping her from dying, by her own hand or someone else’s.'
Lindsey unleashes her anger by running through the streets of Cork City at night time, through dark alleys and passing the homeless, the forgotten, the addicts, the lost causes. Lindsey doesn’t fear for herself during these nightly excursions. She runs to a boxing gym in the city centre, from her home on the outskirts, and does a session with the punch bag, letting off frustration and the dark emotions sweeping through her system. But aside from the normal feelings of being agitated and unsettled, Lindsey is now well and truly annoyed. Someone has been leaving notes outside her home, threatening notes, and Lindsey has no clue as to who is doing it.
Choosing to deal with the instigator of these notes herself, Lindsey decides to stay quiet and see what unfolds keeping a watchful eye open at all times. Not one to look for help, Lindsey is a lone-ranger and exposing a weakness is not in her makeup. But these notes are impacting Lindsey. She is noticeably more jumpy at work and her colleagues are concerned for her well being. When things get a little out of hand, the police are eventually notified but the reasons for the threats are very unclear.
Author Cathy Kelly called Michelle Dunne ‘the real deal’ and I would have to agree. The characters, the locations, the atmosphere are all very vivid bringing the story alive to the reader. Lindsey Ryan is a great protagonist with a gutsy attitude but we also get a glimpse under the shell of the guilt she carries on her shoulders. All the individual players in this tale are all wonderfully cast and Michelle Dunne excels at imparting the compassionate nature of humanity. As Lindsey tries to be a one-woman army, she is forced to realise that she has people in her life who care dearly for her, some new friends and some old. In the midst of it all is her loyal companion and ex-service dog Frank. He is her stalwart, her partner in life and at times the only thing that gets Lindsey moving on any given day. Her work colleagues are incredibly depicted with personalities that just ooze out of the pages. Now I know I’m from Cork, and therefore rather biased, but Michelle Dunne has them all nailed.
Lindsey Ryan is a loner skirting society, avoiding people and any personal relationships. Her scars from the Golan Heights have caused her much anguish and pain but the guilt sits in her craw unwilling to let go its hold on her. These threatening messages shake her up more than she is willing to reveal but when things start to get real personal, Lindsey finds herself way in over her head. Exposing her vulnerable side does not come easy to Lindsey and when the reality of her situation comes crashing in, Lindsey finally might just need some help.
While Nobody is Watching is a realistic and compelling tale, one that leaves the reader gunning for Lindsey Ryan. Each individual character, even Frank the dog, is authentic in every way making this a book that, although fiction, felt true. Disturbing and, at times, heart-breaking While Nobody is Watching is also a very thought-provoking and poignant read, one I highly recommend. Hopefully this is the launch pad for a new series featuring the spunky, stubborn and very credible Lindsey Ryan.

While Nobody is Watching is a realistic and compelling tale, one that leaves the reader gunning for Lindsey Ryan. Each individual character, even Frank the dog, is authentic in every way making this a book that, although fiction, felt true. Disturbing and, at times, heart-breaking While Nobody is Watching is also a very thought-provoking and poignant read, one I highly recommend. Hopefully this is the launch pad for a new series featuring the spunky, stubborn and very credible Lindsey Ryan.

While Nobody is Watching by Michelle Dunne is a debut psychological thriller and one I found to be a page turner from the start. This is exactly why I love my book blogging, discovering books that I love written by people who can spin an excellent story that holds me from start to finish.
We are introduced to Lindsay Ryan who three years ago was Corporal Lindsay Ryan, peacekeeping in Syria with a promising career in front of her. Then life threw a curveball in a terrible way in the form of a little girl accidentally setting of an IED, killing two and injuring Lindsay. Since that day Lindsay has blamed herself and has suffered with severe PTSD to the present day.
In the present day she is back home in Cork city. She has a new career working with the troubled kids in and around Cork city. She is quite an inspiration for a fair few of them aa well, what they don't know or see is that Lindsay is struggling, no sleeping and flashbacks are terrorising her when alone. Lindsay also feels like she is being watched at work, at home and even in the night as darkness falls and her nightmares take over. As it escalates we see Lindsay wondering if this is paranoia or something else?
A story that deals with serious subjects that affect a lot of ex-military and it is something that, in my opinion needs highlighting more in this day and age. Michelle Dunne has woven a tale that plants itself firmly in your imagination with her detailed descriptions of the settings and her excellent characterisation. The depth of feeling in this book brings everybody to life and the sensitivity with which she handles the seriousness of the subjects is very clear.
I loved Lindsay's dog Frank and their relationship is beautiful. I thought that Franks' devotion to Lindsay perfect and just shows the bonds animals and humans are capable of.
A psychological thriller that encompasses, trust, friendships and even loyalty within it's intriguing plot that had me trying to guess who the culprit was constantly. A great read and I would recommend it, definitely.

What a wonderful read. Realistic, well written and believable characters touching on a number of social issues but, as with Lindsay Ryan's work with her children, in a sympathetic way. Add in a thriller with subplots and lives intersecting and this is a real winner. The treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is authentic and a brave step but it works superbly. We get an insight into the demons Lindsay lives with and the effects this has on her behaviour - seeming at once reckless and courageous. The "supporting cast" includes those who "get it" and those who don't and are thought provoking. But this is not just some "worthy" treatment of mental health - it's a damn good thriller!! Lindsay Ryan is a character we care about - and worry about. I found myself in that dilemma as a good book reaches the last 50 or so pages (with me still not knowing "whodunnit") that I wanted to devour it to find out what happens but wanting it to last longer as I was enjoying it so much. You know you're reading a good book when you're in the supermarket wishing the queue to move quicker so that you can get straight back to it and 2 days later you are missing it because you've read it. The best recommendation of all is that, being someone who generally prefers "stand alone books", I want a series of these. There is so much left to discover in the character of Lindsay and her relationships - and that is NOT to imply that her character was under developed. She feels real and we are invested in her life. I can only hope that there are further books in this series - and soon. I would highly recommend this book. Well done Michelle Dunne - get that pen and paper out as soon as possible with the next one :)

Whilst Nobody is Watching is a brilliantly written, captivating thriller that hooks you from the outset. The vocabulary and symbolism used by Michelle Dunne throughout is impressive to say the least and Dunne is successful in creating a strong emotional connection between the reader and the characters, especially the protagonist, Lindsay Ryan.
Lindsay Ryan, an ex-Irish Army Soldier suffers from PTSD. She’s tough with a no-nonsense approach but as we move through the book, her vulnerabilities bring her to life. She has for a little while believed that she’s being watched; at home, at work and even in the middle of the night when, as darkness falls and brings about nightmares of her harrowing tour in Syria, she passes the hours running.
Since leaving the Army, Lindsay works in a centre for vulnerable children who have been in trouble with the police, a job that she is passionate about. She is an inspiration to all of the children there, particularly Jamie Cossens, a 13-year-old who began shoplifting as a cry for attention after his mother died of cancer and he had to go and live with his disinterested father and his new family.
Another fascinating character is Lindsay’s friend and former soldier from her troop, Adam Street, who runs a gym in Cork. Extremely protective of Lindsay, they haven’t seen each other for 3 years too involved in avoiding the shadows of their tour. When they come back into each other’s lives they manage to deal with their demons in a touching, quintessential way.
Each page is easy to imagine with its rich descriptions of the surroundings and characters that have been written superbly and with a lot of consideration to their different plights in life.
Soon, the feelings that someone is watching become reality as Lindsay finds threatening notes pinned to her front door followed by photographs that have been taken of her on a camping trip with some of the kids from the centre and after that, a vicious assault. But who would want to harm her? There’s nothing she wouldn’t do for anyone.
The subject matter of PTSD and heroin addiction has been approached with sensitivity and an emotional depth.
One of the highlights of this book is the relationship that Lindsay has with her loyal dog, Frank. It’s beautifully told. The lengths that Frank will go to, to protect Lindsay speaks volumes about the respect and love they have for each other.
This is a heart-warming story of friendship, loyalty and trust wrapped up in an exciting thriller that kept me guessing the identity of the antagonist until the very end.
All in all, an excellent read that I would highly recommend.

I’ve been a long-time fan of Michelle Dunne’s writing and While Nobody Is Watching reminded me exactly why I keep coming back. Her books always feel incredibly authentic, and this was no exception.
Lindsey Ryan is such a compelling lead. As a former peacekeeper living with PTSD, she’s rebuilding her life while investigating the disappearance of a young woman, but it’s the emotional depth of her character that really stood out for me. Michelle Dunne never sensationalises trauma. Instead, she portrays it with honesty and compassion, making Lindsey’s struggles feel completely believable. The exploration of trauma was equally powerful, showing how the effects of the past can shape lives in ways that aren’t always obvious.
I also really liked the supporting cast. The relationships felt genuine, and every character had their own story to tell. By the end, I realised just how invested I’d become in all of them. The empathy I felt wasn’t because the author told me how to feel, but because the writing and character development were so strong.

I have been reading a lot of Psychological Thrillers in the past months and although I'm no expert in the genre, I have found that they are quite interesting and they are fascinating to me.
As we follow Lindsey Ryan we go on a journey to find out the truth behind the mystery and crime that happened.
What are the motivations of the characters? What will they do in the end? Who will Lindsey trust? Lot's of question, some that I thought about while reading, but I won't talk about them just in case, no need to spoil the story.
There is mystery, there is danger, there is a woman with a kind heart that works with the city’s troubled youth. The mixed of thrilling and uncertainty with the action pace and the excitement of uncovering what was the truth.
The book as exciting thanks to the characters. They gave realism and what we needed in the story to understand the background and get some clues about each character and the plot. Besides, the interactions made it possible for conversations to start.
Overall, I enjoyed the story. It wasn't the same kind of enjoyment as a sweet romance, but it was the kind of enjoyment related to a thought provoking story. I loved that the book, thanks to the characters and the storytelling, focused on certain themes. It got me thinking and even emotional at certain points.

I devoured this book in 24 hours it had me really gripped. Set in Cork in Ireland, the storyline follows Lindsay Ryan who was a Corporal in the Army. Following an incident in the Golan Heights, while on a peacekeeping mission Lindsay has been left with severe PTSD. After the Army and some rehabilitation, Lindsay is working in a Childrens Centre, for children who are victims of neglect, abuse, troubled and overlooked by those who should be caring for them. This job enables Lindsay to ignore her own problems and how vulnerable she feels.
Lindsay starts to receive anonymous notes pinned to her front door and is certain she is being watched, all the while dealing with her own roller-coaster emotions and demons of PTSD. Who is the perpetrator?

A story with twists and turns makes for a real page-turner. It does what every great thriller does, leaves you very satisfied but fancying a little more. Be warned this is no techno-babble weapons manual, or flag-waving macho military escapade.

Michelle Dunne doesn’t miss. This book was thrilling, nerve wracking and compelling. Not only are we given a fast paced plot that keeps us wondering what could possibly happen next but we are also given an intense look at some of life’s heavier subjects. I’m always amazed at Michelle’s ability to shine a light on topics that are very heavy and hard to read about but she weaves the topics into a story so seamlessly.
Lindsey Ryan’s story focuses heavily on the impacts of her PTSD and how it affects her daily life. When she begins feeling like she is being stalked and scary things keep happening to her, she has to figure out if it’s actually someone out to get her or if it’s all in her own mind.
I can’t wait to see what happens to Lindsey Ryan next!

I've just finished this book and I loved it.Former Irish Army Corporal Lyndsey Ryan is haunted by the traumatic events of a UN peacekeeping mission in the Golan Heights.Now working with vulnerable teenagers in Cork,she struggles with PTSD while becoming convinced that someone is stalking her.As the threats intensify,Lindley must uncover the truth before her past catches up with her in the deadliest way possible. Michelle Dunne's first hand experience in the military adds realism and depth to the story. Tense,emotional, and full of twists, it's an excellent read for fans of crime fiction and psychological suspense. Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for giving me the chance to read this book.

What a fast paced, well thought out thriller with action. Absolutely loved the character, Corporal Lindsey Ryan. A major plus point for the book is author's own experience and detailed truth and PTSD and addiction. Lindsey is a strong female character and you can still relate with her vulnerability.
Another character I fell in love with is Frank, seven year old German shepherd and the relationship and trust between Lindsey and him.
I really didn't see the ending coming. Took me by suprise. I don't want to say anymore as I don't want to giveaway anything but really hope there will be more of Lindsey Ryan in the future.

While Nobody Is Watching by Michelle Dunne is a powerful novel. It was quite thought-provoking, and entertaining.
I really enjoyed the mystery. There was danger and intrigue. As the book moves along, the situation escalates and it was really interesting to watch.
The characters are excellent. I loved the themes of compassion and humanity that were weaved through this story. Each character was well developed and wonderful. I really enjoyed following them.
This was an excellent read. I highly recommend giving it a shot.

was expecting this book to be your average thriller but it turned out to be so much more! I absolutely loved this story and the characters were amazingly written. The book deals with lots of serious and sensitive subjects and you should prepare for this before reading this book. Lindsey is a fantastic female protagonist and I love the relationships she has with street and frank! I’m really hoping this book is the start of a series as I would love to catch up again with these characters. 5 stars from me! Thanks to NetGalley for my arc copy of this book.

This was a well-written, well thought-out thriller. It also has a non-fiction element to it in that it deals with many issues that real-life servicepersons deal with once they return to civilian life – PTSD and addiction. This element made it a bit hard to read at times, but overall I enjoyed the book. These topics were discussed with candour, and empathy.

This is a real page turner. Michelle Dunne draws you into the lives of her characters and brings them to life while unfolding their own unique, sometimes dark and gritty back story. Lindsey Ryan, a troubled ex-soldier has a good heart but dealing with PTSD makes her live so recklessly that I was stuck somewhere between wanting to hug her or shake her. When I reached the 80% mark, I didn't want the book to finish but the ending exceeded expectation. I hope there is a volume 2, I would be perfectly happy to read what happens next for Lindsey Ryan or any of the characters.

An extremely well-plotted thriller. I had no idea whodunnit, and every I thought I did, I was wrong! Some of the descriptions made me wince too, in a good way!
