Sometimes the bonds of tragedy are stronger than blood.
When Vandy Hall got into a stolen car with Reynolds McAllister-her brother's best friend, her childhood crush-she had no idea the lifetime of pain it would cause her. As a student at Preston Prep, she watched from the sidelines as her older brother, a prominent member of the Devils, dominated socially and athletically. Her permanent injury, and the extreme overprotectiveness of her family, locked Vandy into a life of social isolation... one she numbed even further with addiction.
Stealing is what Reyn McAllister does. Objects, cars, hearts.
Or he did, until he was sent away for a horrible mistake. Locked up first in juvie, and then at Mountain Point Military Academy, he spent three long, hard years paying for his crime. It wasn't nearly long enough, but now he’s returning home, to Preston Prep, and to his house next door to the Halls. But after three years of harsh, regimented structure, he's discovering that freedom isn't such an easy thing to grasp.
It should be easy for these two to avoid one another. They have nothing in common, other than a single tragic night. But sometimes, the person you know the best is the one who's hurt you most. When an opportunity arises at Preston to revive the Devils, Vandy and Reyn make a deal that will seal their fate once and for all.
Everyone thought they were gone, but there's no rest for the wicked, and a Devil never sleeps alone.
I’m so disappointed with this book. The author absolutely destroyed her character because she decided that she needed to go the route of so many crappy authors these days and make him a manwhore. In this case it made absolutely no sense! The kid was locked away at a military school since he was 14. It was very difficult to even be around girls. Then she did the most unforgivable have ever seen. She had him lie to the heroine about his experience! He implied to her that he was a virgin! He specifically told her that “he waited for her”. He told her that he hadn’t really been interested in any other girls, because he knew she was it. He told her on more than one occasion that there was never a chance to be with girls because he wasn’t able to be around them. He acted like that wasn’t an issue because of her. His inner monologue reveals that he and the other guys actually were constantly trying to find ways to get with girls. He talks about finding easy girls to text nudes. He brags to a table full of guys about how he had plenty of opportunity to get with girls during community service and that he was screwing them. The heroine was of course a virgin who despite being beautiful and surrounded by hot guys every day, had never even been kissed until the hero. I’ve seen it before but this is the absolute worst case. The authors act like someone would have to die if her hero was a virgin. Why? They write female characters all the time who despite being virgins are automatically experts at sex. Why does a man not only have to be a manwhore but also get all of the benefits of someone who was loyal and faithful. She had every right to know at minimum that he wasn’t a virgin and had been around. No. I draw the line here. This is going on my authors to avoid list.
What hero thinks and tells his friends...
“There were girls. Sometimes.” The school administrators weren’t idiots. They knew we had to be around girls occasionally or we’d burn that fucker down. “Few times a year, they’d bus in students from the sister school for social events. Plus,” I add, popping the top on my can, “I had like a million hours of community service, and trust me, the kind of girls who are on probation?” I give him a look.
“I shrug, but that’s basically the gist of it. “Had a semi-regular thing going on with an arsonist named Melody.” By the looks on their faces, they can’t decide if I’m jerking their chains or not. I won’t bother saying one way or another. Quick, flustered hook-ups in bathrooms, utility closets, and port-a-johns aren’t exactly brag-worthy.”
“Thank god for contraband phones, social media, and girls with either the high or low self-esteem to send sexy photos. But, Carlton isn’t wrong. Too many dicks and not enough tits. I glance over at a table of girls I’d seen the day before at cheerleading practice and feel the familiar tightening in my groin. “But yeah, but overall, it sucked. I’m glad to be back in the world of co-eds.”’
HEROS BULLSHIT LIES TO HEROINE
I give him a weak shove. “Shut up. Like you don’t know the effect you have on girls.” He blinks at me, and if I didn’t know better, I’d say he looks almost bashful. “I haven’t been around girls for a long time.”’
“I didn’t come here to have sex, Vandy.” His voice is low, and despite his words, he barely has to reach forward to brush his fingertips over my legs. “Just what kind of guy do you take me for?” I give a nervous smile. “The kind of guy who has a lot more experience than me?” His hand drops, fingertips dragging away. “Not with this,” he says, eyes boring into mine. “It’s not like I’ve exactly had an active dating life. I was trapped in a school with three hundred other guys.”
‘“That’s a good reason not to date.” “Yeah,” he reaches out and grabs my hand, pulling me close, “but there were other reasons, too.” He wants me to ask and, like a fool, I do. “Like what?” “Like,” he says slowly, looking up at me through his lashes, “this girl I knew was still back home. I hurt her pretty bad, and I wasn’t going to be satisfied until I saw she was better.” He lifts my hand to his lips, and he kisses me on the back of the knuckles. “And then when I saw her, suddenly I knew why I’d waited. She was even prettier than before. Funny. Determined. Sexy.” He drags me, stunned, between his knees, hands stroking my legs.”
Original review: I loved this book. So much better than the first one. It seemed so genuine and honest. Vandy and Reyn had survived a tragic accident that left serious consequences, both physical and emotional, that only the two of them could fully comprehend. The love story itself was so innocent and pure, developing slowly and in secret. It was altogether cute. The rest of the story grips you from start to end. The secret society, initiation challenges, and building of friendships for life.
I am truly loving the Boys of Preston Prep series. In particular, A Deal with the Devil was fantastic. I think Lawson and Rue did a fantastic job cohesively connecting this book to the first as the hero, heroine and other main characters were either not in the first book at all (Reyn) or less prominent (Emory, Vandy, etc.)
Overall, I absolutely loved this book and was so hooked. This story had a lot more depth and the connection between Reyn and Vandy could not be denied. I loved the rebirth of the Devil's and seeing how the new Devil's came to be. I can't wait for Bass's book next! 4 stars ~Ratula
Before I start, I just have to say... I have no idea why so many reviewers think he led the heroine to believe he was celibate during his time away. He also wasn't a manwhore by any means--not like some of the books out there. *shrugs*
Anyway, that tidbit aside, I LOVED this book so much. The author really gave the story time to develop. There was a lot to unwrap with these two, and I'm so glad the author took the time to do it justice. I adored all of the characters and I loved the group they developed within the Devils.
Also... "Mine now." I cannot tell you how much I freaking LOVED this line throughout the book. It was so well done. I started the series with this book, but I'm going to go back and read book 1 now (even though I reaaaaaally want to read Bass' story lol).
I really really enjoyed this book. The story was cohesive, engaging, and I absolutely fell in love with Reyn and Vandy. I found this book to be even better than the first one, and I’m so glad I read it.
After three years, Reyn is back in town, and he doesn't expect the Vandy he sees, to be the girl he falls for. These two are tied together forever due to an accident one fateful night, and watching them navigate that together, when they're the only ones who know what they went through, was an interesting story. Reyn wants nothing more than to make it up to Vandy, and Vandy wants nothing more than to be her own person and make her own choices. Watching them each grow and become better people while coming into their own (even if it is together) was really incredible, and I loved the way that it all came together. I also really enjoyed the incorporation of the Devil society after what happened in book 1. I thought that was a fun twist and I really enjoyed watching that group grow in both comfort and friendship. I absolutely enjoyed a lot of the side characters, and I'm glad we got a lot of time with, not only Vandy and Reyn, but also Emory, Aubrey, and even Sebastian, who we know gets his own story in book 3.
This book was dark, it was full of feels, and I borderline inhaled it. Excellent work by Angel Lawson and Samantha Rue.
This book was wonderful. Our main characters are fascinating individuals that are flawed, which is so refreshing; their flaws make them more real. The book was the perfect length, not so short that you feel cheated, but not so long to where you get bored. I couldn’t guess what was going to happen next, and that’s one thing I love about these two authors, I can NEVER guess what’s going to happen in their stories and I love it!
This was a great palette cleanser without being too fluffy and sweet, it had just enough spice and steam, it was just all around perfect. I highly recommend this series! Definitely read everything in order so you get a feel for the school culture and everything that’s going on in this school/town.
*Also, there is another review on this book ranting about how our H was deceitful in leading the h to believe he was a virgin. This is not the case at all, and unfortunately that reviewer misunderstood a lot of things that were said in the book. For example, the H says he’s not used to the whole dating thing, meaning he literally doesn’t date or have relationships, he would only ever hookup in the past, he wasn’t telling the h that he had never had sex…so please don’t let that review keep you from reading this book. It’s absolutely well worth the read! *
I loved Devil May Care and was excited to see that this amazing writing duo had produced another book. The Devils were disbanded in Devil May Care, but now they are back with a fantastic new story featuring different characters. Reynolds and Vandy are broken from an accident in their past and it is amazing to see how they repair each other. What they don't realize, is that others had been hurt by that same accident. In the process of bringing the Devils back to life at Preston Prep, Reynolds, Vandy, and Vandy's brother Emory are able to finally begin to get past the mistakes of youth and begin to heal. I love, love that Vandy and Reynolds are so vulnerable and unsure at first around each other and it is hard to put this book down as their story unfolds across the pages. This book is full of angst, love, and an unbreakable bond among a group of people that were once broken but have now found togetherness in the new Devils.
My favorite line and don’t ask me why!! It just made me laugh every time Reyn would say it!!
I wasn’t sure how I would feel reading this story, but I loved it! Reyn had so much going on and he was doing everything to be a better person than he was from years ago. Not that he was particularly bad before going to Military school. I just loved this character all together and especially how he was with Vandy! I loved them together and how Reyn treated her. I hated that stupid security guard, I wish we did something about his ass though!!
I absolutely loved the first book and immediately signed up for the second one! I love the story and world Angel and Samantha have created. I was getting bored by bully romances and then BAM here comes this writing duo giving me this high school/academy bully romances; which is hilarious because sometimes I despise academy books but this series is giving me EVERYTHING.
I love that since each book has been quite long, the story is really flushed out along with the characters. We can see why a character does something, whether it be a bad or good thing. The plot wasn't too slow or too fast for me. It didn't feel like Angel or Samantha said 'the book has to be xyz long so now we got to fit the story to that amount'. It felt like they wrote the story and let it develop naturally.
Vandy and Reyn were amazing together! I honestly need more from them. Their story is full of sadness, anger, and forgiveness. Neither of them is a black and white character. They both make good and bad choices. They feel like real people that you can relate to. I found myself relating to both Vandy and Reyn's fear and inner monologues throughout the entire book.
Their story is also very slow burn, so if that's not your style, I would cautiously start it (because I still recommend it lol and I'm also not a fan of slow-burn). I am so excited about the third book and I can see myself loving the rest of this series (I really hope I didn't just jinx myself).
Oh my goddddd, this was SO GOOD!!! The angst, the tension, the sneaking around, the heartfelt emotional connection, the sexy times, the characters’ history…all of it. This book was over 500 pages and I still want more. I need more.
Vandy and Reyn were perfect together. Both were broken and haunted in their own ways by an accident that they were involved in. I think that traumatic connection was what really made the relationship special. It was made even better by the fact that they weren’t supposed to be together. Everyone sheltered Vandy and treated her like glass, except for Reyn. He actually understood just how strong she was because he was there with her at the start of her breaking point. He recognized her trauma and her hurt and matched it with his own. After being sent away to military camp and coming back, he took the time to get to know Vandy again. But the thing is, he never treated her less than. He was always on her side, sticking up for her. Seriously, he was the ultimate soft boy with a Devil’s touch. He definitely knew how to treat Vandy right in more ways than one, if you get what I’m saying. I couldn’t have asked for a better relationship development. It was beyond perfect. Just what I needed.
I could go on and on about how much I loved this book. How I adored the tender moments between Vandy and Reyn as much as I adored the sexy scenes. How I couldn’t get enough of their connection, both emotional and physical. How I loved seeing Vandy find herself and stick up to her parents and her brother. How I envied the friendship that the Devils shared. But that would take all day. For now, I’ll say this: read the damn book. You won’t regret it!!!
This book was a major slow burn and I loved it! Reyn and Vandy went through so much together and individually. Although their story was heartbreaking to read the authors brought it all together seamlessly by the end.
The Devils totally have me invested and I can NOT wait to read allllll about Sebastian! Sebastian, I am patiently waiting for you!
VANDY MY LITTLE BABY I LOVE HER SO MUCH IS UNREAL, ngl wasn’t expecting much (jordan look away) bc ig why not? they serve so much omg reynvandy my babes!! living for the gwenhamilton crumbs
I refuse to believe that they both had mental and physical scars from the accident but only reyn kissed her physical scars!!! They could have been kissing the physical and emotional wounds!
I struggled to get thorough this tbh. A lot going on. Too much for me. Idk if I can read the next one. I do love the 4th book. Heston is such an asshole.
This turned out to be a pretty good book. I liked Vandy, although there were times she annoyed me; however, I was all about Reyn this book ("Mine now"). I can't wait to read Sebastian's story next after getting a taste of him in this book.
3.5 stars: was a cute story. Reyn and baby V was cute. It wasn't in depth or dark. Light read. For me it was a take it or leave it kinds of read. Nothing stands out were you are saying "you have to read this its incredible" its OK.
The first book was better in the romance department (and chemistry of the characters). This one, however, had a way more engaging plot and I enjoyed seeing the new Devils and their growing bond. Looking forward to Sebastian's book.
