Parents usually worry about everything when it comes to their children. From basic care to discipline, parents are always worrying about doing the right thing. However, nothing scares parents more than “The Talk.” A thousand question swirling around their head. When do I open the conversation? How do I start? How much information to I tell them? How much information too much too soon? Preparing Your Daughter for Womanhood: A Guide for Moms by Robin Jones Gunn is a mentoring book which gets down to the heart level of the mother-daughter relationship as they move into the next stage of their lives: adolescence. Drawing from her own experience with her daughter, Rachel, as well as stories from other mothers and daughters, Ms. Jones Gunn provides inspiration for each mother to tailor this journey to each unique mother-daughter relationship. As she states, “You aren’t just having ‘the talk.’ You’re starting the conversation.” It is the moment to celebrate our daughters as they blossom into the women God created them to be. I have been a fan of Robin Jones Gunn’s books since I was a teenager. I grew up many with many of her books including the Christy Miller series as well as the Sierra Jensen series. With two daughters myself, 8 and 2 years old, I knew that I wanted to have a different conversation than I had with my mom. So, I began preparing around my oldest daughter’s birthday. Researching the topic and trying to figure out the questions swirling in my head. When I heard that Ms. Jones Gunn was writing a book for moms on this very topic, I eagerly awaited it’s arrival. The book itself isn’t very long about 180 pages and a quick read but it is filled with ideas and inspiration to guide me and my daughters on this journey. It is not a strict how to, do A, B, C, it is a guide to help you tailor this journey to your daughter’s personality and interests. I highly recommend Preparing Your Daughter for Womanhood.
Preparing Your Daughter for Womanhood is available in paperback
This isn't a bad book, but it didn't meet my expectations at all. I already have a really strong relationship with each of my three daughters, and I work carefully to stay in tune with their hearts. This book seems more geared to open up the eyes of moms who may not be as close to their girls and need help knowing how to see them and move toward connection with them. In that case, it's a sweet book that can gently wake a mother up to what her daughter needs from her. But if you've spent years pursuing and building relationships with your girls, this is probably not going to be very helpful for you.
To hear her heart to help mamas lead their daughters is a breath of fresh air.
This book is not a Pinterest-y book that will leave you overwhelmed with All The Things you have to do. In fact, it’s the opposite. You will finish the book (after underlining and rereading much of it) inspired, encouraged and totally excited to have the you-are-growing-up conversation–and many others–with your daughter.
It is designed for mamas of tweens (8-12) but I think ever mama needs to read it b/c it will inspire you to be intentional with your daughter.
I read this book a couple years ago when my youngest was 8ish and I think it was the perfect time. It gets you ready to start these conversations and how you will approach everything as your daughter gets older. I reread now as my daughter is on the cusp of getting her first period as a good refresh and reminder of what I’ve been doing well and what I could try to work on. Lots of good ideas of how to make your daughter feel special and loved by you and God.
Excellent book for moms with younger daughters (ages 5-8). Even though my daughters are teens, this book had some great information for me as we navigate life together...it doesn't matter if each conversation is perfect but that you start each conversation and your daughters know that they can always come to you. Great information!
This was phenomenal. Highly recommended for moms of pre-teen daughters who are looking for a Christ-centered approach to preparing their daughters for puberty and menstruation and for celebrating their entrance into womanhood.
This book could not have come at a more perfect time. It has really helped me sort all i feel and want to share with my daughter about becoming a woman. And it has given me some great ideas and ways to make that happen
If you are a Christian with a daughter or daughters, this is a great book for inspiration and making what can be an uncomfortable topic beautiful and natural.
I have gained valuable insights and ideas on how I can build and strengthen my relationship with my daughters. I also liked the part about healing personal traumas so that it will not get passed down to the next generation. This is one really helpful book every mom needs.
