So overall I loved this book!
I loved how sweet Roman was. How he wasn’t portrayed as a manwhore but a family man.
This book would have received the full 5*
HOWEVER.

my main bug bare was we never find out why he can’t have children. It’s never explored. Never explained. The fact Teagan uses this as a reason to ‘break up’ was unforgivable esp as she witnessed first hand how he felt after his college girlfriend broke up with him due to this issue. Again I really wanted to know why he couldn’t have children.

Teagan also annoyed me a little bit. Miss communication is just really annoying. If you want to be the strong willed person be honest with your partner. Don’t stomp on them from a hight and expect them to be ok with it all.

I’m getting kind of fed up with these tough wannabe heroins it’s ok to depend on the man but still have a backbone. It’s ok to crack under pressure of previous mental abuse.

I’ve read the Seattle sharks and loved it. I’ve read the Carolina reapers and again loved it. So far the raptors series is falling short. Liberty annoyed me again and she wasn’t even a main character in the book.

Saying that I’m hoping Hendrix and Savannah can bring this series back to life. Even tho the whole coaches daughter has been done in Seattle sharks series with Pepper and Eric 🤷🏻‍♀️.

SEE BELOW FOR TRIGGER WARNING!!

So, as I mentioned in my review for Meghan Quinn's The Change Up, friends to lovers just ain't my thang.

However, like I mentioned there; I make exceptions. This being the same exception and that I am invested in this series (read spinoff hockey series, now this one) and the author.

I will admit, I did like this better than The Change Up. Their relationship, though fast-paced I felt flowed naturally considering that they had known each other for over 20 years.

Roman was not portrayed as some Playboy manwhore, but yet a strong family man who knew his hearts desire. Teagan was strong in dealing with her self-conscious issues brought about by an abusive relationship. Though I really think more could have been done on that aspect. Maybe having her meet with Liberty, or another therapist?

And... WTF was that epilogue?! It was 6 months later, and about 2 paragraphs. 🤷😭😂

Now to the triggery spoilery stuff (??)

So Roman can't have kids. We NEVER learn why. FIRST, I really feel like there should have been some kind of explanation on this part. Was there some sort of accident or illness when he was younger? Was he born that way? What happened?!

ALSO, this is where I feel it is somewhat of a trigger for some. Not a full-on trigger like rape or non-con, but I feel like some people, myself included, would like to know about this issue prior to going into a book. Personally, I will not read books that have this issue. So I feel like I was kind of tricked into reading this, and that made it more emotional for me. I did not like going in blind and being confronted with that issue.

THEN!!!!!! I did not like how Teagan used this issue, which he was very self-conscious and hurt about, against him when she "broke up" with him. She obviously did it because she knew it would be the one reason that he would walk away. But I feel like issues like this are just too much of a low blow, and I cannot respect a relationship in which someone would do something like that. I feel like there was not enough of an apology to make up for what she had said, even though she did not mean it.

But, maybe that's just me. Despite that I still enjoyed the book, but I've definitely been stung by this author now.

The way this book made me feel....

It was a less intense book and it reminded me of Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan. Definitely look up tw if you are thinking about reading this book.

Teagan and Roman have been friends since their childhood. They've never crossed that line and when Teagan's bf Rick (who's on the same team as Roman.....) starts getting abusive, manipulative and controlling. She needs a place to stay and moves in with Roman.

How they both dealt with conflict really annoyed me. They would resort to s3x instead of just talking it out like human beings should.

I have read and loved all of Samantha’s hockey series books, and was excited to jump into her new sports romance series featuring the players on the professional football team, the Raleigh Raptors. In book one, we meet Teagan Hall and Roman Padilla, who have been best friends since they were children, and their story continues where they are featured as our H and h in book two.

Friends-to-lovers is one of my favorite troupes, and I just adored every scene when these two would talk about their childhood and how much it meant to them. They were so at ease with one another and shared an undeniable deep understanding, love and respect for each other. Their unspoken bond, chemistry, and connection radiated off of the pages. It was so sweet how he would cook her favorite dishes and help her fall asleep when she was having a nightmare. I loved all of the supporting characters, too, including his dog, Walter, and their interactions with their friends and families whom they were very close to.

Teagan and Roman’s friendship lasted over the years, even though he went away to college and after he made the NFL as a running back. Unfortunately, a couple years ago, Teagan began dating and living with Rick, one of Roman’s teammates, who is emotionally and physically abusive. When the situation escalated, she wisely leaves and finds refuge in her best friend’s home and arms. Although this book may have triggers for some, it is extremely well written, and you feel all of her pain and turmoil as she tries to take her life back.

Roman was a dream. He loved her from afar for years and years and was so very loving and caring, always putting her needs and happiness first. He believed she only saw him as a friend, and therefore never pursued a physical relationship. He hoped for a future with Teagan, and that one day, she would see him in a different light. He knew she needed time to heal from her break up, and was so patient, and said all of the right things to encourage, motivate, and empower her. She was perfect in his eyes and it was beautiful to read how safe, secure, and confident she was with Roman. He was so loyal, generous and kind, yet so very strong and protective.

Roman encouraged her to forgive herself and move on both in her personal life and in her career as an artist. I only wish she would have confided in him about the particulars of what she experienced, or a mental health professional so she could better understand how she was a victim and deal with her emotions and panic attacks. She relives her time with Rick through vivid flashbacks, and while I was pleased she realized all of the abuse she endured was not healthy and that she deserved better, to be a true role model in my eyes, she would have had to talk to someone, especially since her friend, Liberty Jones, the wife of Roman’s teammate Nixon, is a psychologist. Also if Roman is her BFF and lover, I feel she needed to share that part of herself with him in order for them to truly be one. He kept offering and she refused to talk about it, choosing to deal with it on her own.

People suspected the abuse, but they didn’t get involved which truthfully bothered me resulting in my lower rating. As a victim of domestic violence myself, I personally feel people should get involved especially when they notice their friend, who is normally outgoing, become withdrawn and insecure, and they witnessed Rick being controlling and an entitled jerk to her.

I feel any type of physical abuse should be reported to the police because if he did it to her, he’s likely to do it to someone else and there would at least be a record of it. While her reasons for not reporting it to the police or the coach, and not confiding in Roman or Liberty about the details are explained, I just personally wish she made other choices, especially the reason she gave for ending things with him. I thought that was cruel, and even though she may have had good intentions, she lost my respect.

Book two ends with Rick getting what he deserves, and Roman and Teagan getting their much-deserved sexy times and HEA! I am truly a fan of Samantha Whiskey and am looking forward to reading more sports romances by this talented author.

In the last book you saw hints of what was to come in this one. I really love that Roman and Teagan had a friendship that went back to when they were 4 years old. Hated that Roman had to hide his feelings for Teagan because he thought he wasn't good enough for her because he can't father children, which lead to Teagan ending up in an abusive relationship with a teammate of Roman's. I was grateful that when Teagan needed a safe spot that she ran to Roman, that he welcomed her with open arms, giving her space and support at the same time. Even better was how over months both realized their feelings for the other and realized it was the time to act on it. It was great to see them living a full relationship so happy, happy that is until a POS came to ruin it all. I hated how Teagan had to deal with things, but her move at the end was smart, even if it endangered her greatly. The ending to this one had me smiling, loved that Roman and Teagan are free to live their HEA.

I love Samantha Whiskey 's stories. She's become a go-to author for me. I was eagerly anticipating this book and couldn't wait to dig in. But I was a little underwhelmed.

For some reason Teagan just bugged me. And I wanted to love her. I felt bad for what she went through with her abusive ex, but I wanted her to be stronger than she was. It wasn't until late in the story until she finally stood up to him. But to hurt Roman--who was practically a saint of a guy--in order to 'protect' him....God I hate when the H/h does that rather than just TALK. And I agree with other reviewers--that was a particularly low blow to break up with him over his 'issue'--didn't his ex girlfriend do that to him too? (I kept yelling at my kindle, 'you idiot ' when she did that. And why didn't we learn more about his issue? That could've been explored in a simple paragraph. Was it the result of an injury? Was he born that way? And how did he even find out about it? I was waiting to see it explored and then...nothing. And on a minor note, what became of the abusive ex? Was he jailed? Kicked out of the league? Traded? I wanted to know, and thought it might be mentioned in the epilogue. But nothing.

On a positive note, Roman was pretty much a perfect guy. I don't know how you could not love him. And the sex scenes were pretty hot. And as usual, the writing made it pretty much a page-turner. I just felt there were some things that needed to be explored that weren't, so I'm a little disappointed. I am looking forward to Hendrix and I assume Savannah's story though. Maybe I'll be a little more impressed with that one.

Another day, another five star read by the great Samantha Whiskey!
Another overwhelmingly delicious man to bring me to my knees.
I mean can we talking about that first kiss though!?
HOT DAAAYUUUM.
Roman was delectable in every way. To be inside his head and feel his love for Teagan and the lengths he’d go for her I can’t even stand it.
And Teagan...she was a fiercely brave woman. She had been through the storm and made it the other side scars and all.
Samantha Whiskey brought it from the very beginning with Roman and I wasn’t ready. Whiskey even brought me to tears unexpectedly so it’s safe to say I was in my feelings with this one but I don’t regret a single word.

Roman by Samantha Whisky is a football sports romance that follows the story of Roman and Teagan . This is the second book in the Raleigh Raptors series, which is a spin-off to the Carolina Reapers series.

Roman and Teagan have been best friends since they were little kids, and they’ve definitely had an attraction towards one another. But in Nixon’s story we got a glimpse of the relationship Teagan was in with Rick - really I wanted Teagan to see through Rick as she needed out of that relationship. This story deep dives into that relationship more and the trauma she has had to endure.

When Teagan flees to Roman’s house for safety, it allows their love to bloom from more than friends. And sometimes you have to hurts those you love to save them…and you.

This story is emotional and could be triggering to some readers.

This story ticks the sports romance box, but adds in friends to lovers.

^^^^^^
Warning!
^^^^^^

This had a darker tone than bk #1.
This had too many flashbacks of Teagan being: controlled
by and subjected to domestic violence by her ex Rick who
played pro football on the same team as hero Roman.

Roman was a good guy and long-time friend of Teagan
who he secretly loved for years. Rick seemed mentally un-
stable and took up too much of the story. Roman deserved
better treatment by the author.

This book opened with Nixon, hero of bk #1 hunting women
& planning to be unfaithful to his new wife, then the subject
was dropped. WTF???!!! Did this author intend to leave
readers in the dark? Don't give Nixon & Liberty an HEA in bk
#1 & then take it away in book #2. If there is a bk #3, I will
probably take a pass.

We get that sex sells, but if the author spent more time on
MC love and less time on the baddie, she'd have had a more
memorable book.

I'll be honest. This is horrific. First off, Roman is a Latino character written by a white person for white people. Secondly there is more smut in this than the others which feels gross considering hyper sexuality in IPV survivors is a trauma response. The whole relationship was honestly out of line. I know sometimes you have to suspend disbelief in books but this is truly just not a good representation of healing from IPV.

I was super excited to start this book because it's the newest Samantha Whiskey book and anyone who pays attention to anything I write will know that I am a huge fan of hers. I was also excited once I read the description because I love a good best friends to more story and I was interested to see her take on it when I had serious issues with Meghan Quinn's version. This book tackled it in pretty much the best way possible. There is a bit of a trigger warning involved with this book because it does involve abuse so if that's something that makes you uncomfortable steer clear of this one. I think all in all the abuse was handled very well and it was realistic how it came back in flashbacks. Roman was an incredible guy and I thought him and Teagan were really cute together and overall the story was really good and touching. I was a little confused as to how her supposed best friend didn't notice the extent to which Rick's abuse was going on especially because even in the last book (Nixon) I was able to pick up on it as an observer. Also you never really find out why he can't have kids it's kind of just thrown in there as a reason why they can't be together even though it's quickly dismissed. Also it honestly seemed like a combination of a lot of books including The Change Up and A Secret for a Secret. Overall I really enjoyed it so I give it a 4.5! - Hannah

Gah! There is nothing, nothing that Samantha has written that I haven't loved. This woman can write peeps!

I am so in love with Roman and Teagan. Bestie's for 22 years and have been thru everything together. And Roman has been in love with Teagan for just as long.

After Teagan runs to Roman from an abusive relationship with one of his teammates, he knew, it's now or never. What's the worse that can happen?

This book was just fan-damn-tastic. There were times I wanted to throat punch Teagan but I totally understood why she did the things she did. When you have been physically and mentally abused for so long your own thinking gets all cray-cray. And wow, what a subject to tackle in a romance book anyways and Samantha did an outstanding job of telling Teagan's story.

This book is a total must read but please start with Nixon. I mean, you don't have to to enjoy this book but it's the start of the series and you wouldn't want to miss out.

Now.....Hendrix and Savannah?? Oh, and I would love to see the owner, Weston Rutherford and his assistant, Brynn get a book. I bet that would be one heck of a story.

Kudos on another outstanding read Samantha!!

Oh my I don’t even know where to being. I love me a friends to lovers romance. This book will hit you in all the feels with things Teagan has to overcome but boy does our girl fight. I love a strong heroine and though Rick the dick tried to break her spirit our girl didn’t let him win. Seeing him get what he deserved had me cheering loud enough I woke my dog up.

And Roman? OMG he was swoony and alpha and just damn perfect. Your heart breaks for him but there is absolutely no one more perfect for Teagan than him!! I loved him so much but that can pretty much be said for any of Samantha’s heroes.

Another touchdown for me now I need more kindle crack please and thank you!

This was an enjoyable book, and I really liked the chemistry between Roman and Teagan.
However, I got a little annoyed with Teagan over a couple things, wanting her to be stronger sooner, and the way she chooses to intentionally hurt Roman despite her good intentions behind it.
There were also a couple things I questioned, and things that were mentioned that were never really explained... kinda felt a little unfinished at the end.

I shamelessly devour free romances on Kindle Unlimited, and unlike many free books, this author has actual talent as a writer. This book was surprisingly emotional, as it dealt with the fallout of years of emotional and abuse that culminated in actual physical abuse. The book basically opens with the immediate moments after the abuse becomes physical for the first time. So fair warning there as far as triggers.

If you worry about triggering yourself, I don't want to push anyone to read this, but I will say this: as someone who's been in abusive relationships and is also still extremely insecure as a result, I really loved this book-but full disclaimer both my abusive relationships were at least 5 years ago and so I've had some time to recover myself. I might not have been able to read this even a few years ago. The heroine is mentally very much like me, but she has a strength I didn't have for a long time. She leaves the abuser as soon as it gets physical, she takes self-defense classes, finds an apartment complex with a clear mind for security and immediately installs a security system like an intelligent woman, and while she obviously still fears the abuser, she is extremely strong and doesn't allow it to control her life.

So, if you're also an abuse survivor, all I can say is that I found this an inspiring yet realistic portrayal of the scars of abuse FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS/HAD A SUPPORT SYSTEM. Roman and her friends and family are there to catch Teagan and that is a major part of her recovery. If these were real people, I would say someone with the same emotional and mental scars as Teagan but that didn't have a fantastic support system would probably end up in a much worse place than she does emotionally and mentally in the end.

And finally, even the usual romance novel relationship roadblock is legit in this book (surprisingly, not actually related to abuse.) Roman's issue is real and actually makes sense as a possible tragic roadblock. And mild, very vague spoiler: I LOVED that it wasn't miraculously resolved, and as a couple they really do go with one of the other options (which is confirmed in the next book.)

Great book, but definitely content that is not for everyone. There should be a trigger warning in the prologue to the book as the portrayal of domestic violence is very real.

Having read the first book in the series, it was clear that this had already been going on. And the way her friends responded both in that book and this one is, sadly, all too real. Even when people suspect abuse, it's very hard to call out in your friends. Women at both extremely high and low ends of the income spectrum are at the greatest risk, and Ms. Whiskey addresses some of the reasons why women in high-income situations can have difficulty leaving.

As others have noted, there is a gap in the explanation of why

The way Roman handled her emotional needs from the past abuse was very sensitive. Their declarations of love could have felt "too fast," but the way their relationship was written, it actually made sense. I love how Teagan found her voice and strength and was able to eventually come to a resolution that was just and good for all of them.

We first met Roman and Teagan in Carolina Raptors book about Nixon. These two have been besties for 22 yrs. They stand by each other through thick and thin and that's how this books starts. When we first saw Teagan in Nixon's book, she was with a fellow Raptor who was abusing her but she thought it would get better. On this night she is once again a victim of Domestic Violence so she runs to Roman for a place to stay and try to get her life straighten out. She doesn't want Roman to get involved since they both work together, so he gives her unconditional support, love, care and anything else she needs or wants.
Teagan has to learn how to defend herself and stand on her own two feet. This was great watching how she fights for her self esteem, independence and also her love for Roman.
I loved Roman, his friendship and caring nature and how he always put his love for Teagan above everything else. He's just an all around nice guy.
This was an emotional, raw story with subject matters that are hard to talk about and usually not.
I also enjoyed the other Raptor characters and can't wait for their stories.
I just wished the author would have explained Roman's "family" issues or done something in the epilogue. Maybe in the next book.

Roman and Teagan have been friends since pre school when her parents moved in next door to his. They’ve been besties for 22 years. But Roman was born sterile and never held down a girlfriend for too long because of it. Teagan was dating Rick the dick for three years. Turns out though, Rick was beating Teagan up.
So one night she runs to Roman’s house to be safe. And for four months she camps out there until they realize they should definitely be together because they’ve loved each other since they were four.
After a while Teagan gets her groove back and even though they get engaged, she gets her own place. Then Rick strikes back and corners her in a bathroom telling her that she needs to come back to him or Roman would pay the price. He misses a tackle on purpose and he Roman gets sacked bad and a concussion. So Teagan knows he’s legit. She breaks up with Roman saying that she wants babies and he can’t give them to her. For three weeks they don’t speak. Then she sets Rick up. She gets the cameras and tells Rick’s she wants her shit. And when he comes over she calls Roman and then Rick assaults her. She has it on a live feed to instagram and Roman calls the cops then shows up right before she passes out.
In the end Rick gets arrested and Roman and Teagan get married. HEA.

This book is so important! It's so necessary to learn that a toxic relationships doesn't necessarily starts when the partner become physical, it can happen with words, threats and isolation.

It was hard for me to read Teagan's story - and I interrupt my reading journey a lot because it was heavy - but I liked that the friendship between her and Roman was strong enough so she had someone who wouldn't judge her decisions and fears. Unfortunately she didn't trust herself enough to open up with Liberty, for example, that is her friend AND a professional (psychologist), cause it would be so rich to have a professional impression of this relationship (I also understand that it requires a loooot of research from the author, so is totally understandable). But it's important to the victims to know what kind of professional help or free channels (support groups, for example) exists, because not everybody has a good friend or love interest to support this break.

Despite the importance of their history, it wasn't my favorite book from the author... I'm actually more excited for what comes next (Hendrix), but I still recommend it. I love Samantha Whiskey books (:

Roman and Teagan

Overall I loved this book. Roman was the sweetest. He was loyal and patient and so understanding. He has loved Teagan for years and held himself back because of his insecurity over not being able to father children.

Teagan shows up on Roman’s doorstep, running from her abusive boyfriend and Roman gives her a place to stay and a safe place to heal. As Teagan works through her nightmares and insecurities she starts to find herself again. Roman has a hard time hiding his feelings and finally gives in and is honest with Teagan.

Teagan and Roman start a relationship and they realize what they’ve been missing all these years. Because her ex is one of Roman’s teammates there is some drama with him both on and off the field. Once Teagan finds her strength again, she realizes she has to take care of her ex herself. While Roman would have absolutely helped her get the closure she needed, her sacrifice for the safety of Roman is something that made Teagan the resilient survivor that she was.

This was a good friends-to-lovers, sports romance. It was mostly light, although the h is just getting out of an abusive relationship.

Roman Padilla and Teagan Hall have been best friends for more than twenty years, and he's been in love with her for almost as long. For the past three years she's been in a relationship with another player on the Raptors, Rick Baker. Unbeknownst, to most everyone, he has been controlling her life until the night he physically assaults her and she runs to Roman to finally break away from her abuser.

Putting her back together and helping her find herself again, as well as protecting her from Rick, Roman has Teagan stay with him. This is a bit slow paced but then emotional and physical abuse of this kind has the victim blaming themself, and Teagan fears for Roman's safety, career, and life. There are times where I became annoyed with Teagan because of this. I really had hoped Liberty would have played more of a roll in this story, seeing as she recognized the signs of abuse (Nixon and Liberty's book), and with her being a therapist that dealt with this kind of issue. The use of technology for recording moments in time, both good and bad, was a nice plot mover.

OHMIGOD!!! I absolutely love this one! I fell in love with both main characters, from the moment I started to read this one!

Roman and Teagan have been best friends most of their lives. They have lived next door to each other and we’re inseparable growing up. They wanted to remain friends but felt the chemistry between them. Especially after Teagan comes to Roman about her abusive ex-boyfriend. Roman thinks he must protect Teagan. Teagan and Roman both think they must protect each other from the abusive Rick, but it’s Teagan who gets the upper hand in the end. Teagan is a little “curvy” but Roman loves all of her and shows her just how much and for how long! I fell in love with Teagan because she is a curvy and outgoing woman. I love that Roman loves her no matter what. I was so glad Rick is no longer an NFL superstar.

In the epilogue I was so happy we got to read the exchanges of vows! This whole book brought out a lot of emotions. I laughed and cried and only wish for a real Roman!

Love, pure love!

I'm not usually a fan of Friends to Lovers but these two were precious! I loved them in Nixon's book and was so excited that they were the next installment of the Raptors series. While I am a bigger hockey hunk fan than football, these boys stole my heart!

Teagan is brave, and smart, and overcoming a physically and emotionally abusive relationship in the safety and security of her best friends arms. You can feel the depth of their connection and how completely supportive Roman is of her and her independence.

There's never a moment I wanted to put this down, or a thought of "it would have been better if..." This was just a wonderful read from start to finish.

As a huge Whiskey fan, who has read ever Shark, every Reaper and now every Raptor book I am astounded at how she keeps it fresh and new with interesting, deep characters I connect with every time!

Roman and Teagan's story was darker than the first book in this brilliant new series, but wow what a beautiful story as we get to see Teagan finally break free from the chains that have held her for 3 years. Samantha Whiskey takes great care when dealing with a sensitive topic like domestic abuse and shows just enough that the reader doesn't become uncomfortable with what's taking place. She gets the balance perfectly and has written an inspirational story about survival and strength. And wow things become hot once Roman and Teagan give into their feelings for each other! The second book of the series is as gripping as the first and you'll find yourself so lost in the story that you don't stop until you get to the end. Be prepared for a late night (or early morning) when you pick up one of this talented author's books!

Book two of the Raleigh Raptors series and I don’t know how it could get any better. I absolutely loved Roman and Teagan. They are the ultimate friends to lovers pairing. They’ve been best friends since they were toddlers, growing up next door to one another. Roman’s known that she’s the one since they were teenagers. It took another girl breaking his heart in college for Teagan to realize her feelings for him. Neither act on their feelings for years, afraid to lose their best friend. It’s now years later. Roman is playing professional ball. Teagan is selling her art. They still hang out all the time but things are different with Teagan dating his teammate.

I refuse to give away any spoilers, as this story is too good and you need to read it in order to experience it for yourself. Just know that Roman and Teagan are the ultimate friends to lovers and their mothers are probably equally excited about their union, if not more.
