I loved the first two books but this one just felt like an entirely different book from an entirely different series. The beginning and end were strong but the whole middle could have used a lot of editing and paring down; some scenes were rambly, others I couldn't get a clear picture of what was going on and didn't seem to make much sense at all. I still plan on continuing with the series, but this one wasn't nearly as compelling or well done as the first two.
This book and the others before it were well written (the line about resting fuckboy face was legendary), but I won't be continuing the series. It has too many things that I personally just don't like to read, despite any interest I have in what happens next story wise. Don't let that stop you though, because some of the things that put me off could be a major draw for others. In terms of series I've dropped, this may be the most amicable divorce I've had.
1. The back stabbing and double dealing. I know that's a key part of fae politics, and I love fae. I just dont like having to worry about betrayal from the MC's love interests, especially when there are so many of them.
2. The f/f sex. I knew the series was heading this way even if no actual sex had taken place yet, but I was interested enough in the plot to give it another try, even if I haven't been able to get into f/f books in the past. Well, the sex started in this book, and I gave it a try, but ultimately I had to skim the f/f scenes. For anyone worried about it, know that none of the other harem members will be having sex with Aen in female form. Male form is a different story.
3. The number of harem members. We're already at 8-ish, with a 9th circling the wagons (does Aen count as 2 since the relationship dynamics are different with the 2 forms? If so, that would up the count to 9-ish with a 10th circling) and who knows how many more to come later, and it seems like I never end up happy when book harems go more than 5 or 6. From a writing perspective, it just gets to difficult to give everyone as much screentime as they need to have fully developed characters and relationships and to avoid feeling like side characters or after thoughts. Especially when you still need to devote time to actual plot, not just character and relationship development. I already don't feel like I get enough time with all the characters, and I don't have it in me to sign up for a 20-book series while every harem member waits for their chance to shine.
Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.
There are no words for how much I loved Star on the Rise. I loved the Get Your Rocks of series from the beginning but now I am just obsessed. This is the third book and the series just keeps getting better because I don't know what to expect and the story is just so compelling.
The characters in this series are just so complex. Kira has changed so much in this book, at the beginning of the series she was kinda weak, complainant, and was very trustful. After the events of Riding for a Fall Kira has evolved, both physically and emotionally. Kira is stronger, her powers are growing even more and she is stronger emotionally, after sorting out her emotions she decides what she wants in life, how she is going to get it, and then she goes after it. Kira was strong but she still had emotions, she still had her vulnerable moments and while she did learn from her bad experience she didn't let it color her world.
The guys in this harem... most of them are a piece of work. Aen and Marlow have always been in my heart, they are my favorite about the group. Something about them always rung true, they did seem to be playing games with her and that pulled me in. Then there are the others, the Changelings. The problem with the band is, they are a-holes, they play the game, they manipulate, they hurt, and while it may be for certain reasons but they still did it. They all have complicated pasts and I love the flashbacks scenes with each of the band members, it helps gives better insight to them but when it comes down to it they are still the hot bad boy type that's kind of a jerk but you know you want, which makes things all kinds of complicated and things are still nowhere near resolved.
Sam manages to put a lot into her plot, there was great world-building, more diversity and feminist concepts were brought forth. Kira is a strong woman and she realizes that all the men in her life want something from her, was trying to fit her into a mold and she wasn't having it. There are also some dark triggering things in this book, emotional and physical abuse, manipulation and so much more. The plot is so intricate, things from book one are starting to make sense, questions are being answered but more are popping up and I am dying for the answers.
The writing is amazing, everything flowed so smoothly and I was helpless to be anything but completely devoured by Star on the Rise. This book had everything, strong emotions, great world-building, steamy scenes, twisty plots, shocking betrayal, complex storylines, wonderful and untrustworthy characters and so much more. Seriously, I know I said a lot but I still think my words didn't convey how much I loved this book, I don't know how long I'm gonna have to wait for the next book, Goddess's Gift, but no matter the amount of time it's gonna be torture to way for it.
Take or Break? I'll take thanks 😉 This 3rd book of the series was incredibly emotive, with many ups and downs. Kira decides which bonds to forge and which to break, as we delve into the pasts of The Changlings and find out how they came to be. Eagerly awaiting the 4th book.
Star on the Rise has the clarity that I've been waiting for. This third peek into Kira's adventure has a smoothness that I was looking for in books one and two, which is awesome because we've got a lot of important information coming our way.
SOTR digs deeper into what Kira is, what she needs to do, and who she's going to need to help her do it. Because let's be real, she might have started out as the underdog in this story, but we've got some serious woman power building up, and all those d*cks who did her wrong are going to learn to fall in line. Maybe some more quickly than others.
There's a lot that I can't spoil because Kira's progress in controlling her magic and understanding her role are really all linked to some big decisions that many readers might not be expecting. So, let me just say, sh*t's getting real, and her life is only going to get more complicated from here.
As far as her guys go, we've got our two constants to rely on, which I think is a big enticement when we're dealing with a harem where some of the members have been total a-holes. Marlow and Aen remain my favorites (though I have a major soft spot for Jake as well), and if you're an Aen fan, you're in luck. We get to spend a lot of time with him in both of his forms, which is very interesting to me because his forms affect Kira's dynamic with him/her, so we get to see different facets of our leading lady each time he changes.
The Changelings, oh, what to say about The Changelings. Those men are a mess, but they're an intriguing and kind of beautiful mess, to be sure. A really important factor of SOTR is Kira building up the support she needs, so there's a big focus on who each of the guys is, and we get some glimpses into the moments that helped shape who they've become. They still have a ways to go, and Hall is going to have to do some work to fully redeem Liam. Unfortunately, he's got a lot of his own demons and history making him into his own worst enemy.
Overall, Star on the Rise moves our plot forward, but it's also very character driven. We don't necessarily have as much of the physical movement or gigantic explosive events that books one or two set us up with, but Hall does a lot of good work and a lot of useful storytelling that are getting us that many steps closer to the final picture of Kira's power and who/what she'll need to be in order to survive.
The Get Your Rocks Off series just keeps getting better and better! Sam Hall seriously never disappoints with her books. This third book was crazy insane and amazing at the same time. I was devastated at the end of the previous book wondering how Sam was going to redeem The Changelings, if it was even possible. But we all know that with these kinds of books, we are never given all of the information. This book was such an eye opener to the characters and their backstory. I loved seeing the flashbacks for most of the guys, seeing the reasons why they are the way they are, why they behave in a certain way, or why they crave certain things. There are reasons for everything and until that point, I think many readers were blind to the possibility of The Changelings being redeemable. Seriously, I was all for kicking them to the curb at first because I started to like them so much in book two...ok, not all of them, but most of them! Even with the flashbacks showing their vulnerable pasts, Kira wasn't guilt tripped into allowing them back into her life. I was so happy to see Kira finally get a backbone! She has gone through some drastic changes in this book, physically, emotionally, and with her powers as well. This whole fae-tastic journey has been a learning experience for her. She is finally getting in touch with herself and what she is capable of. Letting others walk all over her, dictating what she will and will not do, is in the past. She is in control. She makes the decisions. She chooses who she puts her trust in. And the best thing? She can get rid of anyone at any time if they end up not working out. There is no permanent link forcing her to be stuck with someone with bad intentions. Take or break, baby. I can't wait to see what Sam Hall gives us in the next book. I'm anxious to see Kira and her guys in action and see how the most recent addition (whopper of a cliffhanger) will work out!
I need a deep breath as I finish this book. A moment of silence, of stillness. That buzz I spoke about in my review of book 2 in this series, a physical humming that was generated by the provocative and sensual words Sam Hall used to spin this unique and masterful fairy tale, that sensation continued all the way through Star on the Rise. Except here, that buzz settled in my heart and radiated throughout my entire body.
We find Kira having stepped through a tear in the fabric of one reality and into another. With Aen at her side, she has to explore her emotions of being betrayed, the loss of love she thought she had gained, and struggle with who and what she is becoming.
This book is all about emotion. Raw, unbridled emotion. The way Sam Hall has crafted Kira’s story, I found myself feeling every betrayal, the pain of that betrayal by the Changelings, Marlow, Mark, and even Jennifer. I could feel her struggling with coming into her power and all the while feeling powerless. Until she didn’t. And that was a whole new feeling.
This book was so well written - the mythology, the rich world-building, the dynamic and deep characters. With glimpses into the origin stories of the Changelings and Aen, as well as glimpses into Marlow, Duke, and even Kira’s backgrounds, it was just so full and emotional! I can’t wait until the next book!
Our girl finally got some answers and come into her own! . Information overload! We discovered so many things with this book. So many mind games, so many secrets, heartache, intense passion, breaking the chains of control and coming into yourself. This book was all about discoveries and growth. . First of all, I’m so glad we got more Aen. In the previous book since we met him in book 1 I had always wondered where he was, what his role was and if we would see more, and we do! It was great learning more about him and what his place is. His species is so fascinating to me. It’s not one you see very often and so I’m intrigued and I want to know kore. . Kira learns something hard truths and goes through some much needed growth and major learning curve. It’s great finally seeing her working out what her purpose is and learning more about who she is now outside of the steamy passionate moments. I enjoyed getting to learn more about the world when it didn’t revolve around the sex. Don’t get me wrong, I understand it’s apart of the story but I liked diving deeper into the more intricate details. . Im looking forward to where Sam takes us in the next book! I’m sure we will be in for the journey of a lifetime.
I was waiting for this book and it was worth the wait ! Great writing just like the first two books before the third installment. I think the only reason I rated it 3 stars was because of the bonding of the consorts at the end it felt rushed with Liam and the others and I have no idea why jakes felt weird like I don’t even remember most interactions with him in book one or two !? I’ll have to reread them because I didn’t fell a connection .
Right now my favorite bond is with billy I love that there twin flames of darkness
I’m wondering if she will breaks any of the bonds she took aka “Liam” but I look forward to the next book in the series !!!! Thank you for the beautiful writing it was really worth the wait ! I got sucked into the story again
Theory: Does any one else think Ashanti might not be trusted like Lilith doesn’t want to let anyone in her court at the end of the book well everyone wants to explore her home . It doesn’t ring well with me I feel like those people are hold information back ...
Hell if what they say is true everyone wants to ascend what’s to stop her Ashanti and the others from learning how to destroy Lilith once and for all . The lightning god wants her power to return to earth and I’m like I wonder if anyone can be trusted !?

She is an absolutely amazing author with a really great talent for writing some EPIC sex scenes. This series has some really fast burn and a few iffy triggers (that she warns you about in the beginning of the book) so if you are at all unsure about it read those first.
The boys (except for Aen & Marlo) are really bad boys. They mess up, screw around and play games from the get go. And Kira has now had enough. Finally away from court life she starts to learn more about herself, her powers and her goddess. And we might add in a little princess of darkness in there too.
I really love the way Kira’s character has progressed. She went from a really drab little character to this amazingly strong female who might be a little easily side tracked by her whooha but still something really epic to be reckoned with.
This third instalment of the series takes us on a journey of self discovery as well as Kira’s discovery of the real story behind The Changelings. You get a look behind the scenes and because of that I fell even more in love with some of them. Who am I kidding – all of them 🙂
I am really excited by these books and even more excited to be jumping into number 4.
We join Kira on her journey of rising to her empowered self. The book picks up where part 2 left us - you know the cliffhanger of doom. I really loved this book because it fed my vengeful side without taking it too far. In the beginning Kira is obviously heartbroken but she picks herself up and just kind of tranformes in something confident and powerful. There are definitely explanations for the betrayal of Hartley. You have to see for yourself and decide wether they can redeem themselves or not. Aen plays a major role in this part and he explains his devotion for Kira. Which is a good keyword: devotion. Aens support for Kira knows no boundaries, you just can't help yourself but love Aen for it. We even get a softer side of Lucas which was a huge surprise. A welcome one. In the end the only one who just doesn't win me over is Liam. I'm not sure what is going on with him but it seems as if he can't help himself, he just can't be upfront with his intentions. As the leader of Hartley I can understand the pressure he endures, I'm just not sure if his way of dealing and coping is the best. I'm excited for the next part and can't wait to read more of Sam's writing.
I love this series, but I am on the fence with a couple things. I wish that I was informed before the series started that there would F/F sex scenes. It’s not really my thing and probably would not have started the series if I had known. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problems with what anyone wants or likes sexually, this is just not the genre for me. I quit reading another of her series because of the introduction of a female harem member. But since this situation is a bit different, I stayed with this one because I just love the characters and storyline so much. Only other problem I have is that the next book won’t be out for a year. The author says that it won’t take that long, but honestly even half that amount of time would be too much for me. This is also another “me” problem, so may not be an issue for anyone else. I just read so much that I will have forgotten everything by the time the next one comes out. Now that I have gotten those two things out there, I want everyone to know that this is such a great series, totally worth every bit of those five stars and more.
There is so much in this addition to the series that left me knocked off my axis. When the last book ended on a heck of a cliffhanger, I was totally thrown for a loop. I KNEW there was more to the story than what it seemed, but I wasn’t sure how it would play out or how our FMC would recover from the betrayal she felt. This book allows our heroine to meet her match in Aen, who lingered in the background for a large part of the last book while things played out as she bonded with Hartley. Now he’s at the forefront. He teaches Kira to embrace all that she is. To move forward, she’s going to have to revisit her past. To move on and embrace who she’s meant to be, she’s going to have to confront her demons and the band and the emotions that nearly broke her. Don’t expect a demure Kira this time. She’s ready to bring all the heat and passion this time, and what this Kira wants this Kira takes.
Star on the Rise was absolutely everything I had hoped it would be plus an extra dollop of wow! This is the third book in the series, and it did not disappoint. Sam Hall has a writing style that makes you feel and visualize what her characters are going through. I am invested in what happens to the MC. She is a strong character, facing serious challenges. Though she may have some difficulty with each, she powers on and welcomes each new trial. I love how she has finally come to accept her sexuality and powers. She is starting to kick a$$ and does not bother to take any names. I love it! I was especially impressed with the way Sam Hall was able to convey the duality of Aen. It was seamlessly done, and I love both sides of the character. They are two sides to the same coin, and I am so happy that the MC embraces both. Do yourself a favor and start at the beginning. You will enjoy the ride 😉
Boy oh boy did I choose the wrong series to kick off The Reading Merbabes two week long Fall into Fae book reviews… How am I supposed to read and review other fae books when I couldn’t stop reading this one after the first book!? Sam Hall you totally trapped me with Get Your Rocks Off and I can’t even find it in me to be mad at you!
In case it wasn’t already obvious I was too obsessed with this series to stop and write a review for each book. Soooo here’s a combo review for books 1-3, think of it as a buy two get one free deal!
You need to read Get Your Rocks Off immediately. That’s it. That’s my entire review. I have nothing else to add because nothing I have to say could ever truly show how much I’m loving this series. Not to mention the longer it takes to write this the longer I have to wait to start the next book. Buy this series, read it, love it, and thank me later with chocolate. You’re welcome!!
I love books about Fae. I love thise series. This a reverse harem about a rock band... kind of. Its so much more than that. You have Kira, an amazing fae who has only recently found out she is fae, adapting to her life changing so much. I love all the characters in this series, yes even the bad guys. Sam Hall writes amazing and charismatic characters that leap out of the book at you. Kira is on such an amazing journey and this book just compounds what I loved about the first 2 books in this series. Fae are creatures who are ruled by and rule, the elements. I love the dream walking aspect (im going to call it that, im not sure if that's exactly what it is.) Basically this series is just getting better and better - if you're thinking about reading this, please do, I really honestly feel like this is one of the best series that I have read this year.
OMG!! This series has to be read by anyone and everyone!!!
*warning* may have a little bit of spoilers*
What a book! I was dying for that Kira to exact her revenge on the changelings! I get later on why they did what they did but it was still satisfying to see especially when Liam still believes he did no wrong! Damn I can’t wait to see what’ll happen with him! Poor Marlow I’m so happy he was rescued and Jen and Vervain. I can’t wait to see what’s gonna happen to “poor Davey” next(hahahahahaha). He deserves some punishment. And damn that ending!!! Finally she claims the sentinel! That was one juicy scene!!! I can’t wait for the next book! I’m dying here!
Thank you Sam Hall for writing this series! Your writing just emerges me in every moment constantly craving for the next!!!
Like all of Sam Halls books it picks right back up in the thick of things, submerging you in emotions. One thing I will point out that I enjoyed more in this book than the last two is the language itself. Just within the first few chapters my Dictionary got more of a workout than it has in ages, I loved it.
Along those same lines and eluded to in Sam's initial notes, this book has some spots that require a lot of attention. For that reason alone, if you're looking for an easy read, I would suggest looking elsewhere.
Overall, this book is as good as all of the other wonderful works that have been created. If you're looking for something different I would highly recommend this series. This book continues the legacy of skilled storytelling
This series just keeps getting better with every book, as we slowly find out more about this universe.
I love how we finally get to know Aen better, since he mostly played his part in the background until now. I felt like this book definitely provided me with quite some answers to questions I had before.
I love how Kira develops and grows a lot in this book as she embraces who and what she is. She definitely moved on from the person she was in book 1.
The world building in this series is probably one of my favourite. It's a bit complicated at first, on par with how the FMC feels, but we learn as she learns and it adds to the feeling that we're in this book with the FMC..
This series just keeps getting better with each book. I keep thinking that can’t be possible and then I read the next book and sure enough it’s more than possible since each book blows my mind more and makes me love these characters even more. I can’t wait for the next book specially with that ending. I definitely need that next book I want to know what’ll happen next. Kira is growing so much and needs to heal from the betrayal in the last book. She’s trying and she has help to lean on these people but there are a lot of dark moments in here. And there are some hot scenes. I hope to see Kira grow even stronger and show those exactly who she is and what she’s made of. I don’t want to say too much since I don’t want to spoil this amazing book.
Having read the first three books I am enjoying the story. But I'm now into the 4 th book where the author has decided to make political statements about the real world. BIG MISTAKE!!!
To have gone to all the trouble of creating this unique world only to bring it crashing down with your own political views kills the story. People read these books to escape all the chaos in the real world. Not to have the author preach at us. Please rethink your actions in the future. If you feel the need to address today's society then do so as is your right. But don't slide it into the fantasy worlds you create.
Thankfully I have not paid for these books or I would be very angry. As it is, I'm just disappointed.
All I can say is WOW!! Sam Hall leveled up with this 3rd book in Get Your Rocks Off. Her writing gets better with every book that she writes. The 2nd book left us on a cliffhanger and this edition brings it all together. The betrayals, the twists and turns at every corner and the raw emotions that this book induces in it's readers. I love the MC, Kira, and the growth she goes through as she finds herself and her consorts. Sam Hall takes you on a journey with these characters and I don't want it to end. This Fae world is so unique and the world building in this series is genius. I'm anxiously awaiting book 4!!
Okay, this book had a looot of answers. I got impatient, I must admit. Sometimes new i formation got mentioned as if we were already supposed to know something. I even went back to the last book to see if somehow I hadn’t read it to the end. But all those anwers came as I read the book. At the same time that some things were explained (and when I say explained I don’t mean explain like the reader is an idiot), I still felt somehow that I mist have missed a chunk of story. Having said that, Sam Hall is a master at writing dialogue, there were some very smart back anf forth between the characters. And I did love seeing some groveling from the Fab Five. Overall really enjoyed it!
This book and series are so good. If you haven't picked it up yet you definitely should.
After the last book in this series I was left wanting and could not wait for the next book to come out. In this book we get some back story and alot of truths are revealed. Kira has to figure out who she can trust after that trust has been broken. Can she really trust any of these Fae. The characters in this book....just wow. They are all so complex and I am drawn to them each for differnt reasons. There is just so much good stuff to point out I would have to write a very long review.
This is the 3rd book in the Get Your Rocks Off series and it is amazing. The way the storyline just picks up and flows right from the end of book 2 into 3 is very well done. Very well written.
I love the evolution of Kira. Strong willed and stubborn. She doesn't seem to be getting the answers she needs so she goes about finding them herself. I like that about her.
Her connections with Aen, Marlow and The Changelings are unfolding and I cant wait to see how that plays out. Not sure about Lucas. Will he end up being an unwilling and reluctant bad guy? I truly hope not.
I am so obsessed with this series! I could not wait for this book to come out after that cliffhanger in the last one. I was so excited to get more of Aen in this book but I really want more of the band! I missed them in this book. I know I needed to get more depth about Kira and who she is becoming but the guys in what I want the most. This book left me so disappointed in Liam so I’m definitely going to need some magic from him very soon. I’m worried I am way to involved in this world. I love it!
There is so much going on in this book, in a most amazing way, that I am going to have to reread it almost immediately to make sure I digest it all. Once again, Sam knocks it out of the park. In this book we start seeing the pieces come together - getting glimpses into the boys' pasts, learning more about the Lightning Man, meeting the Beast, and seeing just how far down the rabbit hole Alice has fallen. And just when you think you know what's going on, you're reminded just how good of an author and storyteller Sam really is. Sit back and enjoy the ride cuz it's about to get bumpy!
I can’t get enough of Sam Hall. This book has taken me to another planet where I have a front row seat to what is happening. This book, even more than the first two, is of Kara taking over her life. She stands on her feet as a great warrior who is learning what is going on around her. She does soul searching before making decisions that will affect everyone. I loved this part because with everything that happened in the first two books Kara needed to just be her. I can't wait to see what comes next!
