“No one ever changes until the pain gets great enough.” Shauna Niequist

Very early on, the author makes that simple but profound statement. It’s also a preview of what’s to come if you invest yourself in honestly working thru the “Present Over Perfect Guided Journal”.

Altho’ it’s based on her NYT bestseller of the same title, this quality bound, hardcover journal is a standalone volume that can be used by anyone desirous of simplifying their life, decluttering their surroundings and reconnecting with friends, family, themselves and their God.

This is not a formulaic, happy little phrase a day, pop psychology, feel good notebook. Done properly, this journal is going to be painful and take time; possibly lots of it while considering your past, present and where you want to be. Niequist asks deep, targeting questions that reach deep into your heart, soul and mind asking how, why, where and my “favorite” - IF…then what? Be ready to do the work.

Peaceful, is how I’d describe the book itself. From the medium blue, textured cover with simple metallic embossed title to the simple 2 color, uncluttered inside format. It all combines to give a sense of space and freedom. Happily, there is much real estate for writing and the paper quality is heavy enough to support any type of pen you like to write with. There’s a medium amount of varnish on the paper so if you’re using a “wet” ink, give enough time for drying or blot with a paper towel to avoid the dreaded smear. Each page has a date in the upper, outer corner so you can track progress but I suspect most who delve deeply into this journey won’t be using that feature. I could be wrong. Author highlights appear in blue boxes throughout the journal and scriptures are from the ESV translation unless otherwise noted.

All things considered, faith based not preachy, thoughtful and provoking, giftable & recommended 📚

This was a great book if you are a perfectionist and just take on too much. If you are a yes person you need to read this. Loved it.
