This was a quick read, and for such a short read it had some substance, which is why I'm giving it four stars. It's actually maybe 3.5 but I decided to round up. To make it really four, the author would have had to take a bit more time to develop the relationships between the characters and show them connecting and talking. The pacing of the story was fast, which is okay, but then at the end it felt too rushed, like the author just wanted to get to the finish line as quickly as possible.
I liked that Elle had history with Cade, which explains why she would trust him so quickly and immediately. She had also been attracted to Jason while dating Cade in college, which confused her. She didn't know that they both wanted her and had decided to approach her about sharing her. I liked that Cole and Jason weren't manwhores despite their success in pro football, and were looking for a woman with whom they could have a committed long-term relationship with. They both thought of Elle as 'the one who got away'; I really, really liked that they had always thought her amazing and beautiful. They had always recognised her worth and never once questioned that she would be right for them: in Chapter 2, which is in Cole's POV, he calls her "the best thing of my life" and laments that "I let the most beautiful soul slip from my fingers because I chased fame and fortune."
What I didn't like what that Elle had left Cade overnight, without a word and without a goodbye, when she left college to go home and help her parents try to salvage their failing business. I didn't understand why Cole blamed himself for her leaving instead of being upset with her. Ghosting a boyfriend is not cool, yo. And Elle seemingly hasn't learnt anything in the last two years, because she still doesn't communicate with Cole and Jason--waits for them to text her instead of just texting them herself, then deciding to slip away AGAIN without any call or text.
So I didn't really like this girl, and didn't feel like she was worthy of Cade and Jason. I liked them very much: they were upfront with her about what they wanted, but she was immature and couldn't sit down and have an adult conversation to save her life. I found it hard to see what Cade and Jason saw in her; she didn't seem that wonderful to me, she never once thought about their feelings or considered how her actions might affect them. "Beautiful soul"? Maybe Cade was just deluding himself.
I needed more relationship development between the three of them and for her to open up to Cade and Jason about her securities. I wanted her to allow herself to be vulnerable to them and for them to reassure her. None of this occurred; as I said, the ending was rushed, the "L" word was waved around when they had only just reconnected. It was way too soon, and I certainly wouldn't admit to loving a person who had ghosted me two years ago AND HAD JUST TRIED TO DO IT AGAIN!!! On the other hand, someone has to say it first, and by admitting their feelings for her, it would show her how serious they are about her and persuade her to stay with them, so... I can see it both ways, but I still thought it was too fast. I thought maybe they were more in love with the idea of Elle than with Elle herself.
To summarise: Loved the heros, disliked the heroine, liked the writing, disappointed in the rushed ending.
