James VI, the son of Mary Stuart, reigned from as King of Scotland from 1567 and later, from 1603, as King of England and Ireland as James I, succeeding Elizabeth I. His reign thus united the crowns of all three kingdoms under a single monarch.
James' reign saw the continued flourishing of art, literature, and culture, in what would be later be known as the Jacobean era. He sponsored the translation of the King James Bible, published in 1611. He was a prolific writer himself, authoring multiple books during his lifetime.
