Stolen hearts, stolen moments, stolen objects!

From being left in an upper class girls' boarding school upon the death of her mother, where she was mercilessly bullied, eventually running away preferring life on the streets, and from thence to the top echelons of society, illegitimate daughter of a Duke, Beatrix Linley has just one wish. To make contact with her father the Duke of Ramsgate, of whom she has rosy memories. Beatrix yearns to be accepted and acknowledged as part of the family, albeit quietly.
Which goes in part to explain why she was sitting in a tree in the grounds belonging to Thomas Devereaux, Lord Rockbourne, disguised as a youth.
Beatrix spends her nights climbing this tree dressed in men's clothing in order to spy on her father. Only this night her gaze is caught by an argument between Rockbourne and his wife that ends in tragedy.
So Beatrix is a witness to what went on, something that becomes a both a blessing and a conundrum. And making contact with her father--well that's a whole nother story! There's also the problem of Beatrix's kleptomania! Whenever she's worried or anxious she takes things, something she's not consciously aware of until later.
We join forces with Beatrix's chosen family and some new additions, once again enjoying their stories as they rise from the underbelly of London to more prominent positions.

A Scandalous Bargain is the second book in Darcy Burke's The Pretenders series and is connected to the characters in her earlier series, The Untouchables, although you can still read this series without having read The Untouchables.

I enjoyed this book more than I did the first
in the series, I think probably because tings felt more honest between the two of them. They meet in under circumstances which require them to be more honest than they would have been inclined to be otherwise. She witnesses one of the most eventful and traumatizing moments of his life and he catches her in perched in a tree to spy on his nieghbor. Sure, there is still information that they hold back, some of which takes much longer tp come to light, but these early truths between them really set the path for them and I loved the unusual circumstances that brought the together.

I wasn't really a fan of Beatrix's character in the first book of the series, but reading more about her in this book I grew to like her character more. Seeing her take risks and working to protect those around her showed her to be far less shallow and selfish than I had originally thought. She has been exposed to a lot in her life, but yet in certain instances, like with her father and with the investigation, she is still quiet naive.

I really enoyed A Scandalous Bargain and I'm looking forward to reading more from this series. I very much want to find out about Sabrina and Rafe's parents in the next book.

I would like to thank the author, Darcy Burke, for sharing an eARC of A Scandalous Bargain with me. This is my honest review.

Series: The Pretenders #2
Publication Date: 11/10/20
Number of Pages: 278

What a delightful way to begin the journey toward your HEA – dressed as a man, spying on a duke, hidden, perched in a tree, in a man’s garden, witnessing a death. OH! My! Yep, that is how our couple meets in this well-paced, page-turner of a tale. The writing is excellent and the characters are delightful. I fully expected to be annoyed by Beatrix because she annoyed me in the last book, but I really liked her in this one.

In the previous book in the series, A Secret Surrender, we met Beatrix and her ‘siblings’ and learned their backgrounds. You’ll see those siblings in this book, but you don’t have to read that book in order to enjoy this one. This book isn’t as steamy as the first, but it is just as romantic – and the hero is great!

Beatrix Linley is on a mission – a mission she fully intends to complete. It is the only reason she and her ‘sister’, Selena, are in London – the only reason she’s having a season. Both Beatrix and Selena have sacrificed a lot to make this all happen – and now that Selena has found love and happiness, Beatrix is fully focused on her mission. You see, Beatrix is the by-blow of the Duke of Ramsgate. He was fully involved in her life until she was eleven, then he abandoned her. She wants that relationship back – and she’s sure he does too if she can only have a successful season and prove that she is worthy. Then, she witnesses something that could bring it all down if she tells what she has seen.

Thomas Devereaux, Viscount Rockbourne, has been in the worst of marriages for the last five years. His wife is unfaithful and a shrewish drunkard. The ONLY good thing to come from that is his daughter, Regan. She is the light of his life and he loves her above all else. He had walked out onto his balcony to get a respite from his wife’s haranguing when she followed him out – coming at him with a penknife in her hand. He stepped aside to avoid being stabbed – and she ended up going over the balcony to her death. His mother-in-law won’t let it go as an accident – and Bow Street conducts an investigation. They are actually believing he murdered his wife. Oh! My! His shrewish wife is still winning even in death!

Rockbourne and Beatrix were attracted from the moment they saw each other – but both wanted to deny it because it wasn’t the right time for either of them. Especially not Thomas with his wife’s death so recent. I loved his honesty with Beatrix – and his protectiveness. I loved her bravery and willingness to sacrifice. Definitely, two great main characters, and I was so very happy to see their HEA.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can happily recommend it. BTW – for fans of this author’s other series, we get to visit with characters from a couple of them in this book.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Will her past and his present tear them apart ...

After reading Selina’s story, I was intrigued by Beatrix as there were more to her than what left the eyes.
And the opening scene was quite a big leap in this story. Like the plunge the hero’s wife took from their balcony. Like the jump Beatrix made to reach him. Like the step Thomas took to connect with this stranger. Like the hop they did together in trusting one another.
Theirs is a tale of faith and trust.
Beatrix had to adapt to her life’s circumstances for the last decade and a half. It cemented her relationship with Selina, while they are not sisters by blood, they became by heart.
They made choices and took actions they are not always proud about, but they did it to survive as life is very unfair to the weakest and even worse if they are females.
But with Thomas, she felt an instant connection, so much she shares scraps of her past with him, something she never has done before. But the timing is so wrong, she is on a mission, one does not include love. But she would gladly befriend this kind and caring man, one who is honest about his flaws.
Thomas had lost every illusions he had about his wife, and now even from the grave, she continues to threaten his peace. And while her death is a tragedy, it put on his path an unexpected miss, one who jumps fences, fights footpad, crashes toes when she wants to deflect suitors, is kind to his daughter, makes him smile.
While reawakening feelings he buried, she rises his curiosity. He wants more from her, even if he feels he should not, he is in mourning, left more damaged by his nightmarish marriage than before.
Yet while fighting their attraction, they reveal more to one another than to anyone else. It depends their friendship to move to more, but when their security is in distress, they will have to chose between renown and sentiments.

It was a nice read.

I was kind of hoping it would have been more of a mystery romance.

This was an entertaining read. I just had to feel for the characters of Beatrix and Thomas. Beatrix, just wanted a connection with her father, for him to regard her as his daughter, privately not publicly. Thomas had endured an horrendous marriage and was now being hounded by Bow Street and his mother in law. Thomas and Beatrix meet in an unexpected way and gradually form an attachment. However, Beatrix has many secrets and she wonders what effect this will have on their relationships. She also had a habit that she can’t break which could cause trouble. I enjoyed the strong relationship between Beatrix and Selina and the way they were always there for one another. I’m now looking forward to reading the next in the series and finding the mystery surrounding Rafe and Selina’s background. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Scandalous Bargain is the second book in the Pretenders series by Darcy Burke. Although some of the characters from the first book, A Secret Surrender, feature in this story you definitely don't have to have read that in order to fully follow and enjoy this one.

Beatrix Linley is in London with the intention of entering into society before approaching her father whom she hasn't seen since he sent her off to a boarding school after her mother died. The Duke of Ramsgate had an affair with her mother and before her death, he visited often. Beatrix has many happy memories with him. She doesn't understand why once he sent her to school he had no more contact with her. Not being brought up in society she is quite capable of doing things like climbing trees to spy on said estranged father. It is while she is doing that that she meets Thomas Devereaux, Viscount Rockbourne. The tree she uses to spy on her father is in Tom's garden and from that vantage point she, unfortunately, witnesses an argument between him and his wife before the wife plummets to her death.

Beatrix rushes down the tree and meets Tom over his wife's body. Not the most romantic ways to meet a person, but it certainly isn't forgettable. Tom's marriage to his wife wasn't a happy one, the only good thing about is that he has a daughter whom he loves with all of his heart. He never wants her to find out what her mother was like, a drunk and an abuser, so he won't let on to the police that she fell during an argument. To begin with, they are content with the accidental death explanation but when Tom's Mother in Law decides to start spreading it around that he murdered his wife that's when all sorts of headaches begin for him. The only witness he has is Beatrix and she can't admit to being up a tree, nor why she was there because it would ruin her. She can't be ruined because she is determined her father will be proud of her when she finally approaches him. Tom wouldn't ask that of her either.

Since his wife's death, Tom and Beatrix started spending time together. She carried on climbing his tree, and he just invited her into his home using the balcony. The more time they spent together the more they found themselves falling for each other. He proved to be a wonderful support for her with regards to her father, and she proved equally supportive regarding his being accused of murder.

Their relationship couldn't have a future or even be made public, not if Tom was to end up hung or put in prison. Beatrix is his only way of proving he didn't murder his wife but he can't let her ruin herself by admitting she was a witness. How will he get out of his sticky situation? What of Beatrix, will she find out why her father hadn't been in contact for so many years, and would he be a part of her life again when he finds out who she is?

Those questions had me reading the book quickly as I needed to know how our couple could have a happy ending. Tom and Beatrix were perfect for each other and I loved their romance, their clandestine meetings were emotional and passionate. I enjoyed catching up with Beatrix's siblings Selina and Rafe too and that they played their part in this story. Selina had her happy ending, Beatrix too, all that's left is for Rafe to have his story told. For him to have his own happy ever after! I am very much looking forward to that.

Thomas Devereaux, Lord Rockbourne, regrets ever marrying his wife, but when she suffers a fatal accident, he's suddenly on the Bow Street's radar. It seems his mother-in-law is making claims that Tom killed his wife. The more Bow Street investigates, the more things point to Tom's guilt. His only witness, Beatrix Linley, cannot come forward if she doesn't want to have her reputation in tatters. How could she explain that she was in the tree outside the Rockbourne home spying on her the duke, her father who abandoned her years ago?

I liked Thomas who by trying to do the honorable thing in protecting his dead wife's reputation finds himself the number one suspect in a murder investigation. He was the perfect flawed hero. I wasn't so enthralled with Beatrix. She has a habit--both conscious and unconscious--of stealing items from events she attends. While this is mentioned a number of times, once Thomas declares his love, it seems to disappear. I'm not sure that could happen so quickly. Also, throughout the book, the penknife is mentioned and when it's finally revealed it was stolen by Beatrix and pawned, it almost seems like an after thought and nothing else is mentioned about it.

I found it easy to put the book down a number of times and it took me almost a week to finish it. While I usually adore Ms. Burke's books, this one just wasn't as riveting as some of her other books.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

This is not the story I thought it would be, and I am very excited by that fact. I am in awe that the author took the brave stand to show a man as the victim of domestic violence. To be honest, for as much as I enjoyed the rest of this book, that is the one piece that sticks with me. And it makes me a little proud to be a reader of her work. I liked Beatrix. I liked that we get to see the resolution to most of her family drama. But it’s Thomas who truly captivated my imagination. His reactions. His emotional state. Everything he says and does rings true as the survivor of a psychopathic narcissist. (And really, that’s probably the politest thing I can call his late wife.) The author’s research skills shine through in the way she created his character and handled the situation. Now, with the hope of finding out who their parents were, I’m anxious to get my hands on Rafe’s book.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this intricate, uncommon historical romance. The premise and the meet cute were unique and immediately grabbed my attention. Beatrix is a dauntless heroine, trying to forge a connection with the father she never knew.
Thomas is a man trapped in an untenable marriage with a woman who is everything selfish and nothing nurturing to their daughter.

When fate throws these two searching souls in one another's paths, they become irrevocably yoked together.

I loved everything about this wonderful love story. Well-written, witty dialogue, original plot and robust character development.

After learning that he was manipulated into his marriage five years ago by a series of vicious lies, Thomas Deveraux, Viscount Rockbourne is surprised in the most devastating way. He’s even more shocked to suddenly find himself widowed after his wife falls to her death from their balcony. Rumors quickly abound that his wife’s death was no accident and even that Thomas had a part in it. Given their toxic relationship and his own painful past, even he can’t help but feel some guilt along with his sense of relief. When he learns that a young woman saw what happened that night, he accepts her help modifying the exact events in an effort to protect his young daughter. In exchange, he agrees to say nothing about her clandestine spying, but their burgeoning friendship becomes complicated as the bond between them deepens into something more.

Beatrix Linley has fond memories of her loving father, the Duke of Ramsgate, and the family he established with her and her mother, his mistress, up until her mother’s death, at which point the duke abandoned Beatrix at a boarding school. She’s determined to return triumphant as a daughter the duke can be proud of and reclaim her family. This begins with taking London by storm. Her season is going well, but Beatrix hasn’t quite overcome her childhood penchant for compulsive thievery. She’s not aware of what she’s doing, but this vice threatens to bring to light the past she’s trying to leave behind. When attention is drawn to both their scandals, Beatrix and Thomas must expose painful truths and past hurts or risk squandering any hope of a future together.

I loved these two together. I’m a total sucker for a pair that has the sort of electric, almost instantaneous connection exhibited by Thomas and Beatrix. That bond was shown very well here, and I loved how supportive they were of each other, even when they made sometimes questionable decisions. This made them seem more real and relatable really. The loyalty Beatrix and Tom had for each other made me want to keep reading about them, even when their freedom was in jeopardy and I was a bit stressed by their circumstances. I loved their willingness to fight for each other. This is also one of few books I’ve read, if any, which featured a hero who’d been a victim of spousal abuse from his wife. This is a very real issue now as well and is so rarely addressed or discussed it was nice to see that brought to light a little here. Thomas had suffered so much abuse throughout his life and was such a good father that I couldn’t help but root for him and find him incredibly endearing. The only thing we didn't get that I really wanted was some sort of recompense for Thomas' mother-in-law for stirring things up and making him suffer so much, though I suppose she went through the loss of both her children in a short time so perhaps that was punishment enough. After what both Beatrix and Thomas had suffered, their HEA was well-deserved and I was so glad they got right down to it and were open and honest with each other without any game playing. It was also great to see them devoted to each other and their families and uncaring of the opinions of the rest of society. This book was charming and is hands down my favorite of the series, so far at least. I can’t wait for Rafe’s story now.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Scandalous Bargain, by Darcy Burke. Thank you Darcy Burke for writing this beautiful romantic story. For a few hours I was lost in the romantic love affair between Tom and Beatrix. Darcy you spoke to my soul. I read this book and it played like a movie in my mind.
It swallowed my imagination and spoiled it with all the love and affection that exploded within this story. I enjoyed the action. The drama. The romance and the passion had me almost jealous of Beatrix. The drama simply captivated me from the beginning.
I had to hold onto the book with both hands and ride that suspenseful, mystery highway. The plot had drama and then as I read on, the subplot had drama. Two for the price of one I felt like I was getting from this book. I was slowly reeled like a fish on the hook at the end of a fishing pole, consumed by each characters hidden background story. Their stories brought some heavy drama to the table.
In some parts of the story I was caught off guard. In other parts, I was chanting kick their exploitive butt. The action wasn’t to intense for me, but I enjoyed every bit of it did bring. Darcy writing in the book is easy for her readers to follow along with, which I absolutely love. I found the book realistic in every aspect of the word.
Thank you for keeping it real Darcy. Each character was magnificent, including Thea and her “beautiful” performance. Tom and Beatrix love affair has a casualness to it that made the book easy to read. Tom briefly wondered if Beatrix was the cat, and he was her prey. I melted when said to Beatrix, “In case it isn’t obvious, Beatrix, I am captivated by you.”
It as though while I was reading, each flip the page went unbeknownst to me. I loved how their story was written as though they fit together as one intricate piece. I know that’s the point of the story, but I found their story to be very special. Both Tom and Beatrix have issues from their past that haunts the happiness that they could have in their future. Two worlds set out to take on the issues that they believe would bring them happiness.
As Beatrix fights to win her family’s love and acceptance, she’s all the more determined to fight for what she believes in. Tom loses himself to his past and wonder if he could be different than the man that he presumes himself to be.
This story is so endearing. I’m having difficulties of letting this book go. I will miss it.
I recommend this book book with two snaps and a, “Baines, stop allowing Dearborn and his cronies in my house”. Until next time my fellow readers... read on. I received a free copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Our 2nd Pretender, Beatrix, gets her happily ever after. Darcy Burke never fails to entertain.

Beatrix stumbles upon an unfortunate accident and death while scandalously hidden in a tree spying on her father, the Duke of Ramsgate. She is not a stranger to the tree or of overhearing the very loud quarrels of the garden's owners. Actually, she has developed quite the little crush on the master of the garden and feels more than a little empathy towards the man who is constantly berated by his wife.

Through a series of unfortunate acts, Thomas Deveraux, the Viscount Rockbourne finds himself suddenly a widower, discovers a witness to the act that no one can know about due to her potential ruin, and has attracted the unwanted attention of bow street in regards to his now late wife's untimely death. Furthering that, he finds his garden spy is actually quite enchanting and quite the breath of fresh air after the past 5 years of marriage.

A Scandalous Bargain was quite entertaining in the murder mystery aspect of what will happen now with the late wife's tales from beyond the grave and Tom's mother in laws machinations. I absolutely loved the tie ins from the Spitfire Society and from the last book's (A Secret Surrender) main plot. I did start to get a little bored towards the middle but I am suffering from a gigantic case of the blahs lately, so it was probably just me.

I love the discovery/remembering of Rafe and all the potential possibilities for discovering where Selina and Rafe came from. Wouldn't it also be wonderful if it had a connection with Beatrix's mother? Nah, probably too much of a stretch. I am hooked on this series and cannot wait for Rafe's book- A Rogue to Ruin to come out!

A Scandalous Bargain by Darcy Burke
The Pretenders #2

Family…
Who is family?
Does it require lineage and blood relationship?
Or can it be those closest to our heart and
Closer than blood can ever be?

Oh, I do love a good story and this one is a gem! In book one we met Selina, Beatrix, Rafe and others…book one saw Selina and Harry find their HEA. In book two of the series it is Beatrix’s turn and what a grand story it is! In the midst of a pandemic I was able to climb a tree, watch a woman fall to her death, see a couple fall madly in love, and smile a great deal as I enjoyed the escape into the past and a love story I could not put down. Two family of the heart have made their forever matches so far…Rafe is up next but…could there be more?

What I liked:
* Beatrix: as mentioned in my last review…she has sticky fingers. but she also has a heart of gold. Warm, caring, loving, fun, a gem though perhaps not a diamond of the first water…she is a delight and deserved her HEA.
* Thomas “Tom” Devereaux, Viscount Rockbourne: a good man, a wonderful father, true to his marriage vows, married to a shrew who was not what he thought she would be. He isn’t to be pitied though he did suffer much. I was thrilled he found someone to bring light into his life.
* Regan: precocious, precious, 3 years old and the light of her father’s eye.
* Selina: a wonderful friend, soon to be married, best friend and “sister” to Beatrix. She and Harry so deserved their HEA and it was nice to see them again in this book.
* Rafe: Selina’s brother, known also as the Vicar, an intriguing and imposing man that I want to know more about
* Wondering about James (the half brother of Beatrix) and some of the other single men mentioned in the story
* The idea of the Folly…wondering how that will all play out…and how Rafe & Selina will find out who their parents were.
* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* The people I was meant not to like: mean girls at the girls’ school, Tom’s wife-Thea, Thea’s mother, Beatrix’s father…

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series/ by this author? Definitely

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Beatrix Linley has been sneaking into the yard next door to her father to spy on him. She's dreamed of their reunion for years. Beatrix can't help but overhear the argument between the owner's of said yard she's spying from. She's even more shocked when she witnesses Thomas Devereaux's, Lord Rockbourne, fall to her death.

Thomas has been trapped in a miserable marriage for years. His wife has cheated on him, abused him and spread vitriol about him. When they get into a fight and she falls over the balcony, Thomas is speechless. That is, until he sees he wasn't the only one party to what happened. In order to protect the young lady witness, he and she agree to hide the fact that she was ever there.

From that moment on, Thomas has a friend. Beatrix and he begin meeting in secret and sharing bits and pieces of their lives. It doesn't take long for an attraction to develop between them. Should Thomas take a chance on love again? Find out what happens in A SCANDALOUS BARGAIN.

I loved the UNTOUCHABLES series, but the PRETENDERS series by Darcy Burke is almost as good! I was so glad to meet the new characters as well as getting snippets with and about the old in her latest novel, A SCANDALOUS BARGAIN. Thomas and Beatrix are the perfect couple. She brings out a whole new side of Thomas. Their story is slow-building and sweet. Beatrix and him just jive in so many different ways. Readers won't be able to put this one down.

What a fantastic book - it was an entertaining story & Beatrix & Thomas were a perfectly sizzling couple. The plot kept me turning pages to see what would happen next & I could not put it down until "The End"!

Thomas Devereaux, Lord Rockbourne is handsome, wealthy & until her accidental death was married to a harpy that make his life miserable. He has an adorable three-year-old daughter, Regan, who added such a sweet addition to the story. Now, Tom is being investigated for his wife's death.

Beatrix Linley is a lovely lady that walks to a beat of a different drum. She hates society's rules, dresses as a male, is outspoken & a kleptomaniac. She was abandoned by her father, the Duke of Ramsgate, after his mistress, Beatrix's mother died & he placed her in a finishing school & never contacted her again. Now she wants to prove to him, that over the years she has become someone he would be proud of, or would he?

While perched in a tree on Lord Rockbourne's property, to spy on her father, the Duke, Beatrix witnesses the argument between Thomas & his wife & she sees his wife fall to her death - now the plot thickens! If you want a read that leaves you feeling happy with a big smile on your face, then this book & series is for you. I voluntarily read & reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own.

Another enjoyable read by Ms. Burke! Another pair has the opportunity to find a happily ever after after both having been through so much. Beatrix was sent away after her mother died, not wanted by her father, for she is illegitimate. Beatrix wants her father's love and it set to prove to him he is a daughter to be proud of. There is a little problem...Beatrix has a habit of stealing things without realizing it, which makes her a good thief. She has lied about many things, but upon meeting Tom, things begin to change. Tom was in a horrid marriage, one that he was manipulated into. Now he is being accused of murder and the only witness is Beatrix, whom he will not allow her to say anything since it would ruin her reputation. Rather, it begins as a friendship between the two and grows into more. But Tom has no desire to marry again and Beatrix has lied about her identity. With pressure coming from Bow Street about the death of Tom's wife, Beatrix will have to choose between her reputation and love.
I received this novel from net galley and the publisher as an ARC. Thank you! all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This story starts with jump and doesn't stop as the author weaves her magic. Beatrix grows up the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Ramsgate and when her mother dies, he sends her off to school. She desperately wanted his attention and was left very lonely but eventually turns into an excellent Pretender and fashions in her mind how to get his attention.

Now out on her own, she spies on her father from a tree in the next door neighbor, Thomas Devereux. Having overheard him and his wife continually fighting, she observes the wife falling off the balcony to her death! One thing leads to another and the story begins!

She and Thomas begin to form a bond, after all, he had been tricked into the marriage of his varigo wife and Beatrix had is fighting her own dreams. A wonderful story that reveals hidden feelings and several twist and turns, these two needed each other and it left me with a hugh Sigh as I turned the last page!

Everyone is keeping secrets. Thomas was there when his wife fell off the balcony. Beatrix is the illegitimate daughter of a duke. Beatrix has a nervous habit of stealing that she is unaware she is doing. When everything starts to come out, they must turn to each other for support. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Darcy Burke Publishing for my honest review.

I don't think there is much better than stories that have characters that connect. I found Darcy through netgalley months ago and am just hooked on her books because of these continuing stories. The Pretenders series is so much fun and the 3 main characters are just so compelling. You feel so much for them and their story as you read. Keep them coming!

Beatrix is truly an unusual heroine and definitely a complex character, maybe that’s what makes this romance successful. Tom is beleaguered with feelings of guilt and trying to shield Beatrix from getting embroiled in his drama. It’s ironic because she is hiding so many things herself. This is one of those stories where the characters cross class chasms and secrets to find their HEAs.

Beatrix and Tom’s relationship had a tumultuous start, it was tinged with a whole lot of jealousy, prejudice, and downright meanest, but once again love showed there were no boundaries it cannot scale. An amazing romance that tugs at your heartstrings, simply beautiful.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

After her mother died, Beatrix Linley was abandoned by her father to a school, and ignored after more. As the illegitimate daughter of a duke, she had been raised in some form of comfort, but at school, was ridiculed for her birth, and only had her friend, Selina Blackwell, to support her. Since then, they have made their way through life, stealing to survive and gain enough in order for Beatrix to have a season as Miss Whitford, the younger sister of the widowed Lady Gresham, so that she can get close to her father, the Duke of Ramsgate, but she's no closer now, and there's only a month or so left of the Season. Stealing away to the home of Lord Rockbourne, the neighbour of Ramsgate, she watches her father from a tree, and overhears an argument between Lord and Lady Rockbourne, in which Thea runs at her husband with a pen knife, and falls to her death from a low balcony. Spotted by Rockbourne in the aftermath, they become friends, and she soon discovers that Tom has been living a life of hell with his now late wife. They think everything is sorted, and once Tom starts to re-enter society, can make their friendship public, but when his mother-in-law starts stirring up a fuss, and claiming her daughters death was murder, it will take all of Tom and Beatrix's wits, and their friends and loved ones, to help them get through to the other side, and possibly be together.

This one was even better than book 1, which I didn't think was possible. I think it was because of the friendship and camaraderie between Beatrix and Tom, and their chemistry and love for each other, that just kept me hooked, and unable to put it down. They just have a connection which is instant, and their start from friends in a difficult situation, to lovers, was a perfect progression. I felt for Beatrix so much too, after being loved by a father who then abandoned her, and ignores her in society, it's hard to imagine that she will be loved by anyone but Selina, but Tom, and his daughter Regan, so obviously do. The whole plot line with Ramsgate was heartbreaking, but it allowed for Tom and Beatrix to meet, and was a catalyst in them getting together. Tom, though, had been tricked into marrying the heartless Dorothea Chamberlain five years ago, and her whole family were wicked. Just weeks before her death, her brother was arrested on his wedding day for extortion, and is due to be transported, so he's well shot of the whole family, but then the mother-in-law decides that she needs to twist the story, claiming he was violent and adulterous - when actually that was her daughter - and ruin his reputation further. Only with Beatrix's new family connections to Harry, can she help, and she does everything she can - even ruin her reputation - to see him go free. I was so invested in their story, and overjoyed at the epilogue, which also helps set the scene for book 3. Another wonderful Regency read.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from A Scandalous Bargain, except that I was intrigued to find out Beatrix’s story after getting to know her a bit in the previous book.

I was intrigued to learn more about her, how she hopes to prove herself to her father, who abandoned her. I found her a lot more sympathetic than the first book suggested, where she seemed somewhat unlikable at times.

I also was engaged in Thomas’ story arc, as he’s had a miserable marriage and his wife died in mysterious circumstances. It was great to see these two come together and find a spark in each other, in spite of their past baggage.

However, something I continue to struggle with is Darcy Burke’s attempts to add suspense to her books. I always feel like there’s so much potential, but they never go the extra mile to be suspenseful, resulting in it feeling somewhat underwhelming, especially as Thomas and Beatrix first meet over his dead wife’s body.

I feel like a lot of my issues stem from my complicated relationship with romantic suspense and cozy mysteries (I love a good bloody murder mystery, so both make no sense to me at times), and the fact that the book is not primarily billed as romantic suspense also suggests that the light touches of suspense were not meant to be prominent. I think if this is not an issue for you, and you’re a historical romance fan, you’ll enjoy this.

Beatrix is the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Ramsgate. When her mother died, the duke sent her away to boarding school and never contacted her again. Fast forward 15 years. Beatrix is now an accomplished Pretender and is trying to find her way back into the duke’s life (If only. If only.) To do this she spies on the duke from his neighbor’s tree while dressed in men’s clothing (easier to climb a tree, right?). One night she hears arguing coming from the tree’s house. The man of house comes out on to the balcony and is followed by his wife who continues to yell. She rushes at him with something in her hand. He side-steps and she falls over the low balcony wall to her death. Will Thomas tell the duke Beatrix was spying? Will Beatrix speak with Bow Street (the one thing I didn’t understand—why would reporting/giving testimony compromise one’s reputation?)

The rest of the story unfolds somewhat predictably, but I couldn’t stop reading. There are many characters from Darcy’s other series: The Untouchables and Spitfire Society. I’m glad to get a glimpse of their lives as well. CANNOT wait for the next book in this series!

I received a copy from the author; this is my honest review
-In the first book we saw a bit of what happened between Thomas and his wife and how she had tricked him. I thought he was going to have an apoplexy.
-Mrs. Chamberlain was the epitome of a mother-in-law. Maybe the distasteful reputation came from her - we never know! I was hoping she's get some sort of punishment from the Bow Runners.
-Be prepared to go through a roller-coaster of emotions. It's a romance, suspense, mystery, and drama all at once. You'll be laughing, then be afraid, then questioning the truth, at last enjoying the romance.
-Beatrix finally got her wish and received the attention of her father the Duke, but not always in a good way. She even gained a sympathetic brother. Thomas found the best wife for him and his daughter. I was so glad when the Duke gave testimony against Thomas' late wife! All is well that ends well.
-The end and epilogue brings you to the next book but unfortunately it won't be out before 2021.

Heartwarming

This was fantastic. Beatrix and Tom were so cute together from the very start. I vaguely remember liking Lord Rockbourne in one of the Untouchables books. I couldn't remember exactly which story and what had happened to him so I found this book very interesting to finally get some insight to his character. I also really enjoyed Beatrix. You could tell right away that she has such a big heart and her optisim is inspiring. Just a really great story and lovely characters.

An amazing continuation of a great series

This is an amazingly written continuation of a great series. The plot is full of emotional twists and turns, as well as plenty of mystery. The characters are crafted brilliantly, and have the strength to overcome their past. This is a brilliant book that is suitable for anybody who loves steamy historical romances that have a bit of suspense.

Two good people with horrible circumstances

Of course it's well written, but the unusual circumstances of the plot make this book a page turner. The reader hopes for the predictable HEA, but it doesn't seem likely until the very end. Two open hearts are saved by one that opens just a bit.

Loved It

I just finished the series. After reading the first book I skipped to the third book because I had to know Rafe's story and his falling in love. Then I came back to the second book about Beatrix. This series is awesome. The characters run from one book thru the series, and I loved every page!
