Divine Nature

Rate this book
As the Duke of Beridon’s youngest son, Galen grew up in his brothers’ shadow. Bullied and harassed, he was never able to stand up for himself. When Galen finds something he is willing to fight for, he finally does; with disastrous results. Fleeing a broken heart and a brother’s corpse, Galen leaves his home and heritage behind. He travels to the distant city of Davram hoping to learn magic. Real, control the forces of the universe magic, not the street corner charlatan variety. What he learns is even more amazing. What men call magic is actually the power used by the Maker to create the world. Yes, the Maker is real, but unfortunately so is the Destroyer. In order to save his home and family, Galen must learn to control forces that he barely understands, stop an invading army and defeat the embodiment of evil. And save the world.

A mostly original fantasy novel? Those still exist?

This book is a rarity, a well written, mostly original, self published fantasy novel. There are a few typographical errors, but that is to be expected without a publishing company and their teams of editors and proofreaders.

The action is interesting without seeming forced, I don't recall any scenes that were there just to have a fight scene. Galen (the main character) fights with a purpose, which is refreshing for a fantasy character.

The romance is sweet without being sickeningly so. I like the fact that Galen can't/doesn't achieve his full potential until he includes, and works with, Yadira. Personally, I would have preferred it if there was more made of that fact, perhaps the fact that the church misguidedly stopped incorporating women led to their downfall or something.

My biggest complaint is that there doesn't seem to be room for a sequel, which is a shame, as I would love to learn more about this world!

Well written and thought out

I enjoyed read it this book. The main character was easy to like and to follow. Once he got to know the Maker of got a bit more complicated to follow, but that is to be expected. Anytime one tries to explain a concept of magic or religion it can get bogged down with details. Bryce did a pretty good job with both.. I will recommend this book to others.

Fantastic book

I got this because the author offered it free on either Reddit or Imgur. I didn’t really like the look of the cover so wasn’t sure I would read it but I read the very favorable reviews and thought I would give it a try. I’m so glad I did. I couldn’t put it down and I was sad when I finished it. I very much look forward to the authors next book.

Interesting debut. Inventive magic system mixed with religion. Really picks up after Galen flees to Davram.
