They targeted him before he was ever born. They will hunt him. They will execute anyone around him. They will rip his innocence away, corrupt him, and twist him into an instrument of terror. He will give the world reason to fear, fear the unknown, and he will do this lifetime after lifetime after lifetime.
Except this time, Daniel Davis hasn’t come back alone.
Four souls have returned with him, would-be protectors who’ve vowed to shield him from this fate. If they succeed, Daniel will turn what is into what can be. And if they fail, his light will dim and fade…forever
I could have sworn I wrote a review for this book back when I first read it, but I either dreamed that, or it disappeared.
In either case, it is important that you read this book. Actually, you should read all three books in this trilogy. Yeah, yeah, these aren't romance, and yeah, yeah, they're not your usual fare, and yeah, sure, they're horror and supernatural and gory, and yeah, sure, you might read the pages with your eyes partially covered, but man, believe me when I tell you that these books are phenomenal. The author has such a grasp on these characters, and you are drawn in from the start, even while you have no earthly idea what is going on.
Read them. Read them all!
** I received a free copy of this book from its author prior to publication. A positive review was not promised in return. **
Please be warned, this is still a part of a horror series. And all though this one isn't quite as bad, it's still flashbacks to things that have happened and still has things they are dealing with in the present. The killers are absolute pure evil and things get gory and plain sick at times. If things like this trigger you, please be aware and be careful.
I really love how this ended, to a point. I hated losing Alex but the very ending more than made up for it. Also, I liked the little twist in things there at the very end. If you've read book 1, then you know some of what's going on. As well as book 2. If you have not read those two yet, do not continue forward. Go read those first. If you have read them, then you know book 2, led them to where they were in book 1, and this book leads them to where book 1 ended. This is the story of how that ends and what happens in between.
Daniel lost his parents at a young age and no one could really get him to come out of himself, until he met another boy his age named, Tam. And things changed immediately. Daniel finally became the little boy everyone wanted him to be. But what Daniel didn't know, is Tam and their new friend, Alex, knew things no one else did. Except Amanda, who saved Daniel, and Larenz, who hid him. And even their knowing came with time. But they all knew there was going to come a time when Daniel was going to have to be protected at all costs and it may cost all of them their lives to do so. When the evil finally did come, it was as bad as they all knew. And Daniel, being terrified, ran as he was told. But when Daniel reaches the destination he was told, he meets a man who helps him understand things that have been going on in his head and going on period. And Daniel knows he what he has to do or he will lose the light he has forever.
You know, book 2 did me in when I followed what happened to Daniel's past self. This one...shew. I know how Andrew felt in book 2 now. It hits you on such an emotional level you just can't help but to cry or rage or something. And it's from all their perspectives this time, so it's whammy like you wouldn't believe. But it's also a wonder. Because the length that everyone will and has already gone to for Daniel. Yeah, they know what they are dealing with so they have a slight advantage, but it's still a big deal. Because as Alex said in this one, it can only end one way. And knowing how things could go, it's heartbreaking. This is an emotional roller coaster for sure. But I have loved every page of it. I'm glad I've gotten to read this series. It's got it's gory moments, it's emotional ones, but it's worth every page, because the ending is what makes it all worth it. It does have an HEA. So don't worry for that. But you will go through a lot to get there.
Kristoffer writes with such emotion and feeling that even though I'm not sure I'm going to recover from this trilogy, I feel whole and so much satisfaction. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have read them and I really hope that you'll take a chance on them too. It's clear that he's put his heart and soul into this story and he weaves an incredible tale.
I know that I can't do this book justice in my review. I don't have enough words to tell you how this book, this trilogy, has affected me. I know that it will stay with me for a long, long time.
I experienced so many emotions while reading this story. Truly it has all the feels. I knew that I would need tissues, wine, and chocolate and boy, I sure did. There's drama and suspense, there's action, mystery, a certain mystical quality, it was spiritual and magical. There were unexpected moments of humor and I love the cultural aspects of this story, how the characters blended and how they did not. It also had moments of terror and heartbreak and I bawled my eyes out. Seriously, ugly cried!
Even that this book was all of that, it was to me, an epic love story. Not just between two people, but an entire group. An entire blended chosen family came together to battle. Some of this blended family even coming from beyond and between to fight with the young men who star in the story. A true "Good vs evil" tale!
I can't say enough about the characters and how much I loved them. I feel like I know them and that we became friends. I would certainly like to meet people irl that have the kind of spirits that the heroes of this book had.
This is a phenomenal story and I can't recommend it highly enough. It is one of the best stories that I've ever read and you don't want to miss it.
This is the final book in the series. I love the sentiment explained in the opening note from the author- “Hope existed. Hope was lost. Hope must be reclaimed.” This is the best thing one can say about this book. It starts with another child threatened and his parents killed. If not for the intervention of his mother’s best friend, Amanda, he would be lost just as Thomas was lost. Amanda is a Seattle cop and the first on the scene. She knows things that others do not. She also has prophetic dreams and this one is a doozy. She must save Daniel. Everything rests on Daniel. Then the story shifts to Chicago where a very frightened four-year old lives with his adoptive parents. A new family moves in next door and they also have a four-year old. They are Vietnamese and his name is Tam. (Wait, I met Tam in book 1), a connection made. Tam runs to meet Daniel and for the first time in a year, Daniel takes his hand and smiles. Next, they meet Alex, a four-year Chinese boy across the street (again book 1).
Now, this book is a nonstop, action-packed, heartbreaker. So many ups and downs that I could not put it down. Beautifully written but it still left me confused at times. Paranormal activities left me questioning what was and what was not.
this is interesting.. the first two have kept us going and this one did as well.. it was curious.. and fun.. it kept me wondering what was going to happen next and i liked it. good characters.. good writing..
Part thriller, part horror story, part love story. This book has it all. This third, and final, installment wraps up what is, in the end, a battle of good against evil and a tale of love and redemption. Through a series of lifetimes a horrible evil is finally vanquished and a heart finally finds its light . It takes a committed group of souls to make it happen, but in the end love is what prevails. This book takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and sometimes it's all of them in one chapter. Beautifully written and a definite page turner. Well worth your time. I loved it.
A belief that we don’t just live one life. Faith that we continue on and the people we’ve loved in previous lives do, too. Hope that what we do in each life means something even if we don’t know it at the time. It is these ideas that Kristoffer Gair has brought to life in ‘Requiem’ the third book in his ‘Falling Awake’ series. I can’t stress enough the importance of reading these books in order. And that tissues are going to be needed, as the author left me with tears streaming down my face more than once during my read.
“He couldn’t be helped. Nobody’d ever been helped. Hidden, yes, and always found. There was no help for those like him. Not without others. Not without design. Something no one ever attempted.”
Daniel, the light, Tam, the heart, Amanda, the enforcer, Larenz, the hider, and Alex, the protector. Each of these individuals have lived many lives trying to destroy the bad, the evil, the darkness that corrupts souls. A soul that is filled with light, like Daniel’s, is one they will work very hard at trying to turn to their bidding. The four souls chose to return with Daniel in order to combat the evil and in the hope that being with him almost from the beginning might give them enough ammunition to prepare him for what was to come.
