The Shadows have taken over half of the system, and Karin is the only one who can fight back.
Genetically engineered from birth, Karin Makos’s powers have made her the Alliance’s most wanted person. With her sister still missing, and only a cryptic notebook left behind for clues, the mystery of her past is going to take a lot more time and resources than they have to unravel it.
And there’s a bigger problem looming. Keeping their promise to heal Ethan’s stepfather and the rest of the people on the Ozark puts them right past Caishen station and its Alliance allies—and there might be another force on their tail.
After the crew split apart on a wild chase that puts Karin in the hot seat, it’ll take all of their strength and ingenuity to bring them back together. With enemies gathering in the wings, a desperate, heavy-handed station commander hard on their tail, and the Shadows an ever-present threat, they must race against the odds and scramble to fight their way out.

In book 1 of the Eurynome Code, there was a system wide event, in which it appears over 50% of the population of all the planets, ships and space stations were attacked by strange Shadow Creatures. These creatures appear out of nowhere, literally coming out of the shadows to attack you, and then using their fingers to slide into your head, and brain, and taking you over. Whilst they have ‘form’ as in you can hit them, or stab them, they are not quite 3D, and can change shape, and even appear fuzzy at the edges, and this is why they are able to get into people so easily. Once they are in a person, this person becomes zombie like, just wandering around, doing nothing, saying nothing, not really there anymore, and they have shiny, jet black eyes. People are known as ‘The Lost’ once in this state, and there is no cure, or way to help them. They are attracted to Light, Children and other People, in that order. The Shadows can be stabbed, shot, or beaten, but are very resilient, their one real weakness is of course, Light. And this is where this story really gets fascinating. We learnt in book 1 about the main character, Karin Makos – a young woman who fled to this system through a ‘world gate’ (which appears to be something that allows for transport between galaxies?), from the Earth solar system with her sister Nomiki. Karin and Nomiki are different, having been grown in a lab as test tube babies, and both of them have developed rare abilities (although we don’t really know anything about Nomiki yet). Karin, however, has the ability to create and project light, not like a torch, but almost like a substance, so bright and so powerful, that she can actually kill Shadows, in fact, she is the only light source so far that can outright kill them. And as discovered in Book 1, Karin is the only person who can heal people, as in remove the Shadow host from them and bring them back from being ‘Lost’. Of course, this makes her one of the most valuable resources in the Sector. In Book 2, everybody is still reeling from the shock of the attack, trying to come to terms with it all, and work out how to deal with not only ‘The Lost’, but also new Shadow attacks. The crew of the Nemina is initially trying to work out how to get off of Enlil, having been trapped there, after rescuing Cookie, Marc’s Cousin. Whilst on Enlil, they are contacted by Senton, the passenger who blackmailed them into a deal previously to help his family if he didn’t tell the Alliance about Karin. This is the first in several different encounters/situations, that (without giving away spoilers), the crew finds themselves in, as we move through the story in this book. In the first book, it was kind of an introduction to the story, the main characters, and the actual incident that starts off the chain of events. In book 2, we start to see the fallout of this incident, the initial panic and reactions of people on stations and ships, the desperation. This is where the Author has done a brilliant job of writing this story, as she has really captured the various aspects of humanity, from those that are kind, and want to help, no matter the cost, to those that just want to take advantage of the situation, and those that pretend they are nice, or think they are nice or doing the right thing, but are actually just horribly selfish or just downright evil people. There are a couple of points in this book, when Karin faces some truly awful situations, and you wish that she had some other sort of ability as well so she could protect herself. The Author does a masterful job of capturing the really dark nature of some people, and it adds a really gritty, realistic element to this book (What I really liked is that Gorman creates this atmosphere in such an intelligent and subtle way, without huge amounts of graphic gore/violence etc, just to make a point, but with clever word choices to let our own imaginations do the work for us – very clever, and very well done!) As with book 1, the world building is outstanding, the Author has created this detailed environment for the Characters to tell their stories, but just as good, as the story goes along, we are introduced to more and more elements, of the Galaxy at large, planets, stations, different factions. But we are also getting more information and history about Karin, her sister Nomiki and the project that they were involved in. The main story with the Shadows and everything is fascinating enough as it is, but all this background is even more intriguing, and the way it is being developed is not only creative, but very clever, making the story, enthralling and captivating. Whilst the main character of Karin Makos is utterly fascinating as discussed, the other characters are just as good, Soo-jin is easily one of the best characters in the book, with her wise-cracking attitude, and take no prisoners mentality. It has been remarkable watching the relationship between Karin and Soo-jin in this second book. Marc is not in this book as much, and Soo-jin gets more of a main role, and we get to understand her a lot more. This is a brilliant sequel to book 1, and if you enjoyed the first in the series at all, you are going to love book 2. If you have any interest in Sci-Fi, Mystery, Thriller, Action, or a bit of Horror (You will be looking at Shadows in a whole new way after this series, trust me!!), You HAVE to read this series (or listen to it!!), it is one of those books that you just can’t put down it is SO GOOD!!!

Very exciting. This book was almost non-stop action moving the story arc along to a predictable but nonetheless enjoyable pseudo-cliffhanger. I definitely want to see where it goes from here. While the story does rehash a bit from book one at the beginning for anyone who hasn’t read it, I do recommend starting the series at the beginning.
I enjoyed Book 1, but it has some tropes that frankly stood out a little too much. Book 2 is much, much better, and while the use of tropes is still quite present, it is not as prevalent. As I am reading, I keep thinking that I want to send the main character to a podiatrist to see why she is tripping and falling all over the place, LOL.
However, in Book 2 we get a much better sense of character development, though any one other than the main character is still very 2D, because the author does not ever, not even once, put the point of view into any one else other than the main character. Fortunately, the main character is flawed enough to be interesting and compelling.
The plot line is being dolled out in small doses. This book doesn't shed more light on the plot, but it provides background for when the plot will inevitably be revealed.
I would love it if the author took a moment and described what she feels her main character looked like. "somewhat fragile" is about the closest we get to a description. We know much more about her companions appearances, even the structures and spaceships. Somehow, Karin goes along being nebulous and vague, and female. Heck, we know more about Hopper and his gang than we do about Karin.
As I suspected would happen, the author drops the reader Right-Smack Dab into the action, and as smooth as butter, I transitioned from Black Dawn (bk1), right into Renegade... and the action just doesn't let up! As Karin (our Main Character) and those aboard the Nemine try to flee from the tumultuous events in book 1. I'm really happy to see Karin's character maturing as she starts confronting her fears head on, and she starts learning to trust again! All the while, she struggles to find some balance between her privacy, and revealing her dark childhood, because almost certainly, it has real time ramifications for their current situation. Once again it seems that K Gorman must like to leave the reader dangling at the end, but I find that I'm more than happy to follow wherever the story ARC leads... for now, anyway. Eventually, I'm gonna' require some resolution and closure. Just sayin'...
I read the first book in this series back in 2018, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I wasn't sure if the second would hold up. Luckily, it really did! I like how this series combines light space opera with an X-Men kind of feel, and then throws in space zombies. It just feels like a good genre mash-up, which I am a sucker for. It's also a fast-paced adventure that clocks in just under 300 pages, which is a plus these days, for sure. More importantly, it's a fun and engaging story that I had a great time reading. The characters are enjoyable, and the plot moves quickly while still leaving you time to breathe. I kind of wanted to just continue with the series, but prior obligations exist. Soon, though. I will not wait 5 years this time!
In my opinion, the characters in Book 2 come together better than Book 1. They are compelling, believable, and work well together. The story itself takes shape into an adventure saga with mysticism and mad-scientist elements. One element does concern me. Although it's a small matter, Gorman falls into the trap of relating a story of the future, space travel, and science fiction but still treats laptops as state of the art. The best part is it's compelling. It wants to draw you in to the story and find out what happens next. Lots of fun.
A little slow at times, but overall it is an entertaining read. I like the main characters, and the addition of Cookie added to the story. I will read the next book; hopefully there will be a little more action. Also, a little romance wouldn't hurt the storyline.
Karin is now the healer, but.things go wayward as she tries a 16 hour straight "healing session". Running from The Alliance and others proves tricky in this fast moving series.
Reason for 4 stars because author is mixing up characters gets about 2/3 of way into book. Annoying.
The characters continue to develop in interesting ways. The action picks up right where the first book left off, and doesn't stop until the end of this book. The ending makes reading the next book an absolute requirement!!
This is turning into an absolute epic. Love the story, the characters are great, all wrapped up in wonderfully written prose. KG has a real gift with the keyboard. Well worth reading. Excellent!
Book 2 shows our crew in different ways. I could almost predict the end. But plenty of questions I would like answers to. Book 3 is def next on my reading pile!
Karin is digging into the journal that her sister, Nomiki, left behind planet side. She has no idea where her sister is. Half of the population seem to be dark eyed and lost to the shadow attack. Cookie has been freed from his stasis and is working on getting the ship’s transponder and other ‘upgrades’ completed so that the team can stop hiding and possibly leaving the planet.
Their former passenger, Senton, tells them if they don’t give him what they promised, he will tell them everything he knows about them and their ships transponders and id. They need to figure out what to do. They definitely don’t trust Senton, but is he just after healing or is he backstabbing them.
Karin decides to go back to the station and community to help more people from the shadows. The problem is that some of the people just want to use her ability to their own advantage. Some just want to turn her in since her and Soo-Jin’s images have been broadcast as wanted.
Renegades the second book in The Eurynome Code series is even more action packed than the first. The story picks up right where the first left off. Karin and her friends are presented with a couple different options and are torn over who should be saved first or more rather who needs to be saved. Karin’s sister, Nomiki, is still elusive, leaving very little clues behind. Each path they take is more dangerous than the next and the crew is faced with more bad decisions and betrayal.
I really enjoyed this story. I really think you need to read the first book in the series before jumping in. There is so much happening that can be a little confusing. More secrets are revealed and more of the past is coming to light. I like learning about Karin’s past and how it connects to the shadows. (Which is still most of a mystery!) I’m looking forward to book three.
I received an ARC at no cost from the author and voluntarily reviewed it. All my opinions and thoughts are in no way influenced by this.
Renegades is the second book in the Eurynome Code series and continues the story right where the first book left off. Now that the slow start of the story has passed, Renegades focuses on action and intrigue. I've thoroughly enjoyed the cast of characters and the fact that they try to out think or out maneuver the various antagonists in the series rather than constantly relying on brute force. This makes this series a refreshing change of pace from the typical "shoot 'em up" tactic more often present in many of the books I've been reading lately.
I've found myself fascinated with mysteries presented and am both pleased and irritated that I don't have any idea where the story is going. Like the first book, Renegades also ends with a cliffhanger and adds more questions than it answers. Normally I'm pretty good at predicting what will happen next or what the big reveal will be before it happens; however, with this series, I'm completely in the dark still. Unlike other book series that compare themselves to popular sci-fi TV series, I'll honestly say that the Eurynome Code would make a great TV series.

Karin Makos has a power that removes Shadows from the people they’ve taken over, and everyone wants her help. She’s only one person, but she does her best to help, and of course that isn’t good enough for some people. She and the crew of the Nemina do their best to evade capture by the Alliance and others wanting to use her. This leads to another action packed adventure, as Karin tries to solve the mystery of the Shadows and their connection to her and her sister, Nomiki, all while wearing herself out healing people. I like Karin and her mysterious power, she’s well meaning but a little naive; of course since she was raised by doctors and scientists in a lab, it’s not surprising. The remaining crew members are great supporting characters, including Marc, the owner and captain, Soo-jin, the ship’s engineer, and Cookie, computer whiz and Marc’s cousin. The story ended at an interesting point, so I'm looking forward to reading the third book in the series to find out what happens next.
K. Gorman’s Renegades (The Eurynome Code Book 2) is a great continuation of a great tale. Karin Makos is back in an exciting, action filled, adventurous tale that will more than satisfy those who (like me) loved Black Dawn, the first book in the series. For anyone who is in that group I can pretty much guarantee you’ll love this book 2. For newcomers I advise brushing to get book 1, and I fully expect that you too will become addicted to this series. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises about Renegades - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
Such a fun book to read. Very intrigued by the plot. The author reveals just enough about the world to keep us interested and keep everything feeling believable and coherent, and not so much as to provide fluff or allow for holes to be poked in.
Additionally the woman’s perspective put forth by the author is so welcome. Books about men so rarely include the sensory detail that the author provides in this book. I never even noticed before reading this book how little books written by men mention how much just falling down can hurt, but when things goes wrong for our heroine, we feel it, and that’s so valuable. Looking forward to the rest of this fantastic series.
The crew of Nemina just can’t catch a break on their journey to find their friends and family. Trying to find your sister with a government like the Alliance on your tail is no small feat. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the third in the series. Small amount of adult language but otherwise will be enjoyed by sci-fi readers of all ages especially if you love Firefly:).
Definitely enjoying this series. I'm not quite sure what all is going on yet but the author reveals a little at a time and it's enough to keep me hooked. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the growth of the characters, although I'd like a little more insight to the universe as a whole. There's the Alliance and then Fallon but not a lot of background to show what's happened in the past and what the current situation is. Perhaps this will all be revealed in time. Looking forward to the next book.
Having read a part of book four by mistake24%, actually, I was impressed enough to go back to the first and now second book. I'm very glad I did! This super power thing takes me back to a very happy time and era. It's a great adventure story, perhaps they call it drama these days. You will love it!!
This was a very good followup to book 1, it starts off hard hitting and just keeps going from battle to battle. I am glad to say the authors did a fabulous job of creating a full and rich story. Based on the story's ending I am excited to see there will be more books in this series.
