A man waits in the shadows watching his lover with someone else. A young girl must say goodbye to the only friend she has - a friend no one else can see. A boy writhes in agony in his hospital bed as his sister tries to calm him with a story. A mother must learn to let go of the child she has already lost.
Between the Shadows is an eclectic collection of poignant and haunting tales about grief. If you like stories that fill the senses with ghostly interludes and meditations on life and death, then you'll love Jo Buer's new short story collection.
Jo Buer is a gothic suspense and paranormal mystery author living in New Zealand. She is a sucker for the supernatural, time travel, and all things woo-woo. From an early age, she came to realise that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. She lives in an ordinary house in an ordinary town with her husband and feline familiars, Atlas, Gaia, Zeus, and Hades. When not doting on her cats, devouring self-help books or gorging on chocolate, she writes slightly dark, sometimes scary, often ghostly stories with a smattering of romance. Jo is also the host of the Alchemy for Authors podcast - a podcast to transform and supercharge your writing life. To learn more, you can subscribe to her mailing list at www.jobuer.com.
This is the first novel that I have read by Jo Buer and I was very impressed. The novel flowed effortlessly, characters were sound and well developed. The story line was solid, and flows smoothly. This is the first novel in the series. I had not read any of her work previously, which I recommend, but I was able to read it as a stand alone novel without any problems. I gave this honest, found her and I plan to read more of her work. I voluntary review this after receiving a free copy of the novel from BookFunnel.
I loved these stories. Jo Buer is a relented writer and storyteller. She has a wonderful turn of phrase, and her stories are sensitive and observant. Well worth reading. The Butterfly Lullaby was my favourite.
These short stories are haunting, poignant, immediate, and satisfying—while leaving me hungry for more. I loved Jo Buer's immersive, atmospheric style of storytelling and have moved her other works up on my "to be read" list!
‘Life is too short to live in the shadows’ Just a wee bit dark, just like life.
STORIES: On the Edge of the Living In Memory Of ‘The lamp shines a halo on the ceiling, but doesn’t touch the shadows clinging to the corners of the room.’ Empty The Student ‘Tattoos abounded: body graffiti to complement the walls.’ Little Sparrow The Butterfly Lullaby ‘My very marrow is hollow with grief.’
I chose this novel in another authors promo, this is my review. A collection of headaches that we can u find to relate to. Heartbreaking grief, loss and pain. Quick reads, well done and put together to draw the pictures in your mind. Looking for more....
It's not that I don't like "dark" stories (after all, Stephen King *is* my no.1 author), but these stories ... they don't quite worth reading; they seem to lack something
