This series was .....very straightforward. And by that I mean a lot of things. Bad bad things. 😪 The storyline was admittedly very good. But it could have shined through if only:
👀If only the writing style had some emotion. I mean I wanted to cry and then fling some of my tears on my kindle so that this book could have some damn emotion!!! 😒Jeez
Eg- Scarlett stabbed her lover in the back at one point. Now, before we could feel some amount of betrayal or anguish ....or even some sadness that a main character died, Scarlett does what needed to be done, comes back, heals him and then they are winking and laughing. Wtf?!! I don't even drink a glass of water as fast as I read that scene which was a major turning point in the story. 🙄
👀If only Scarlett had some backbone. I didn't even expect a backbone of steel or some equally sturdy material .....a spine with human bones could have sufficed. But ofc not!!! She was such a victim😫. Everything happened to her, never by her. Can someone please get me that special Sidhe dagger so that I can have the pleasure of killing Scarlett myself?☠️☠️
👀If only the climax hadn't been so anti-climactic. I can't believe I was cray cray enough to read six books....six books!!!...just to read that ending! It was so bloody simple.
Plus, literally everyone backstabbed the villain to fight on the good side. ( The fact that they were able to do that makes me lose any respect for the villain ......take my teeny-tinsy joy away too, why don't you 😒)
👀If only Scarlett could have redeemed herself at the end. Even at the ending, someone helped Scarlett to figure everything out. So much for a powerful Sidhe queen😾 I am gonna channel my inner Chandler and say .....Can she be anymore dumb and pathetic?!! Someone please kill that chick for me!!😭
I read six books (yeah, still can't believe I finished all six.....or rather my unhealthy curiosity made me😐) despite the mind-numbing effects of this emotionless series. Right now, even highlighting the fact that the storyline was good wouldn't do much for my battered brain. So I am gonna sign out of here and stuff myself with some comfort food. 😐
There really isn’t any spoilers that I want to get into to be honest. This book just wasn’t my cup of tea. I love reading books about fae males and the fae realm but it just wasn’t for me. It lacked interest. There wasn’t a character that I did like. All the characters in the book I really disliked. I wished it were more detailed and just wish there was more time in each chapter with one particular character instead of switching constantly. This book could be great if it just had more detailed and a little humor because I love humor. At times it gave me ‘The cruel prince by holly black’ vibes. Anyway I would recommend this to someone who loves reading about a damsel in distress main character. And who likes ‘The cruel prince’
Scarlet is overwhelmed by her depression and guilt after her mother takes her life, making her just want to shut down and wallow. But those feelings make her the perfect target for Cade, a Summer Court Fey who feeds off emotion to recharge his power. When Cade brings Scarlet to the Fey realm, neither of them have any idea the catalyst that this one action will cause. Scarlet will learn some truths and neither the Fey or the human realm will ever be the same.
I will admit that I originally pick up the first book, Two Princes of Summer because I loved the cover and I am a total cover snob. I continued reading because I had to know what would happen next (but all the books have gorgeous covers!). What an intense series! The feels that Nissa drags out of her characters and the reader was impressive- and at the same time awful (for me) because when Scarlet feels depressed, I felt like the emotions were so real and raw as if I could almost experience it too. Throughout the duration of the series I feel like there were some amazing highs, usually in stolen moments, and some terrible highs (for the most part in the first book), but anticipation, anxiety, fear and surprise summed up the majority of books. Be ready for mystery, surprise, romance (with just a little bit of steam), magic, danger, deception, court-intrigue, feels, and an epic battle.
This review will be on the shorter side (for me since I tend to ramble) since I have no idea how to sum up all the books and the series justice. One thing that I have to say is that where the first book in the series started was nowhere near where it ended and I mean that in the best of ways! The series was so twisty and kept me guessing, relationships were transitional, good guys became bad (I had no idea who I was suppose to root for but I know who I loved!), bad guys turned questionable, battles were fought for ruling and the ending was just about perfect. Forget what you thought you knew about the Fey because Nissa will spin an entirely new tale that you will not want to miss out on.
Side note- Books 1 through 4 are available on audio and I listened to the first book in the series before getting the box set and it was great! So you can listen to the series and read it.
What a massive story (6 books)! I liked having the volumes all in one. When I finished one I could immediately start the next. There's nothing like no waiting! The cover is gorgeous and is what made me volunteer to read it for my honest opinion. I truly enjoyed the world building. This author took her time to really give detail that makes this feel fully fleshed out. The characters - you'll have some favorites, you'll have some you don't care for, and you'll have some that you loathe entirely. There were a couple of things that threw me out of the story. When dealing with the Fae world to have the "F" word used just seemed out of place. That may just be me. The other part was the sexual content. This story is very well done and I think it could have done with a bit less of that for my tastes. Having said that, this was an epic tale of good versus evil against all odds kind of story and I loved the way the characters changed in maturity as they took up the reins for the best. I like it well enough to recommend it.
This series is a definite must read for lovers of Fae and fantasy! I absolutely loved this series and I can safely say that it has become one of my favourites. I read all six of the books in 10 days and will continue to go back and read them again!
The characters are brilliant and we have a MC that learns and takes her place and rules-rather than wilting in fear! The boys and other supporting characters are just as interesting and fun. There is romance which spices it up for us yet it’s not overtly abundant. I started out with one favourite but by the second book I wavered and fell hard for another. The details are impeccable and the world building is epic!
I have to give a massive round of applause for Nissa Leder who wrote this fantastic series. She has created a wonderful world that I got lost in. It was bittersweet when it ended but I’m sure I’ll be visiting this world again!! Definitely worth a read!!
What a series. I devoured the whole thing in one day. Reasons why I LOVED this series: -The world building was mind blowing, I found myself wishing I could be swept away to see the different realms. -The storytelling was b e a u t I f u l -The character development in the FMC is literally the most incredible thing I have ever seen like at first she is all helpless(not annoyingly so)and by the end you are like OMG YOU GO GIRL -THE ROMANCE. This series pulled my heart where it went. I was kept on my toes the WHOLE time although I definitely had my favorite picked out after book 2. I still have butterflies in my tummy after reading this!! -THAT HEA WAS WHAT I NEEDED. So many books are RH or have unresolved endings and this ending was almost perfect(SPOILER: wish there was a marriage *ahem* you’ll find out). *sigh* So happy.
This series was exactly what I wanted to read. You should read it too!!!
This feels like a very poorly imagined retelling of 'a court of thorns and roses' as written by a novice who thought acotar was too racy and needed censoring and abridging.
I also wrote a review for each individual book. Book 1 was 2⭐️ based on some annoying grammatical errors, stilted writing, flat characters and bland action. The rest were 3⭐️ with the same problems but fewer grammatical errors. Although the writing improved through the series, the characters all stayed stagnant and the action was stupifyingly simplistic. I felt only one emotional response in the whole series, relating to Sage and her tribe of sisters in the final book. The epic finale and battle all resolve over about the last 30 pages of the series, and they feel just as dreary and one dimensional as the rest of the series. I have never been so relieved to be finished reading a book. That being said, the plot carried me along unwillingly to the end and I have definitely read worse books, and quit reading horrible books, so this is a few steps above.
The first couple of books moved along at a nice pace. However, as the series continued too many editing mistakes crept in which distracted from the storyline.
The protagonist, had a rounded back story describing how and why she behaved as she did. Sadly, not all major characters received this attention. In particular the character of Poppy is rather two dimensional leaving the reader questioning her every action. The story is a little bit too cosy mysterys for a serious fantasy reader. Ultimately it is a light read that isn't too taxing. The wind up is possibly a little bit light with a lot of loose ends.
I really enjoyed this series. It was great watching as Scarlett learned to accept her Fae life. And while it seemed she struggled with it at times she always persisted. I loved the relationship between Raith and Cade. It was a true brotherly relationship. Kaelem kind of bothered me with his pushy attitude but I love that he was always there for Scarlett when she need him. Overall Nissa did a great job with the characters and the Fae Realm. She offered great detail without over explaining everything.
The only reason it took me so long to get through this series was because I needed to take a break in the middle. I did like this series, but it wasn’t one of my top favorites. Scarlett annoyed me quite often, though she did redeem herself. Where she lacked though for me, the other characters really took a step up. I thought I was going to hate Kaelem and found that he ended up as one of my favorites. If you’re into the Fae & Sidhe realms I recommend the series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Scarlett's story is one of loss and triumph. After her mother's death, her emotional state takes a huge hit. She is lured into the land of faerie where two royals see her as a pawn to gain the throne. As the series continues, Scarlett becomes such a strong female character at one with herself and triumphs over all her challenges. Really enjoyed the flow of this boxset and look forward to reading more by this author.

I absolutely love the stories and the characters! I finished the whole set within two days it was just that good! I can’t wait to see what she does next! Perfect for fans of a court of thorns and roses and throne of glass.
Good characters, good story line, with action, adventure and some romances. Good versus evil. Could have been more in world building and some spelling errors. Still a good read!
If you love fae, magic and everything in between, you'll love this book! It takes you on a wild journey through mortal and fae lands, with engaging characters that your really want to succeed or fail depending on their goals. Engaging from start to finish.
Absolute s***. Not worth my time. I couldn’t get past how annoying Scarlet was and the two princes were just as bad. Scarlet’s character is really really bad. Plot was predictably boring too. Argh. Nope.
I had to DNF this series. The writing was so juvenile I couldn’t even make it through book 1. I was very amazed at how many reviews I read that loved this series.
I listened to the first four books of this series through my Hoopla app. It does not offer books five and six. Nor does Libby (formerly Overdrive). I do not understand why Hoopla would not offer the full series. For me, the series is just okay, which means I am not invested enough to actually read the final two books. I will just read spoilers and likely be vicariously disappointed.
The Whims of Fae series begins with 'Two Princes of Summer' and follows Scarlet, a human, who finds herself in the fae world and a pawn between two brothers fighting for the crown. This story tells of the desires of different fae courts and the desires of the three fates and the lengths each is willing to go for power. Whose true colors are honorable and whose are dark? Can Scarlet protect her sister and her love while learning to use her newly discovered powers against those more accomplished? What does the future of the fae realm hold?
As in many of my audiobook reviews, using one narrator to voice all characters is a disaster.
