Es gibt Bücher, die man einfach gelesen haben muss. Man weiß es und schreckt doch vor ihnen zurück. Zu gewaltig, zu anspruchsvoll, zu ehrfurchtgebietend muten sie einen an. Robert Musils »Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften« ist solch ein Man grüßt ihn artig, um sich dann blitzschnell aus dem Staub zu machen. Wer sich aber an dieses Gebirge von Buch herantraut, wird bald überrascht feststellen, wie leicht und amüsant es zu lesen ist, und sich wundern, warum er sich dieses Vergnügen so lange hat entgehen lassen. Wenn ein solch ›wagemutiger‹ Leser dann auch noch zufällig ein so begnadeter Comic-Künstler wie Nicolas Mahler ist, dessen reduzierter Strich und lakonischer Humor ihn zu einem »internationalen Star der Zeichnerszene« (arte) werden ließen, entsteht aus der Begegnung mit Musils Jahrhundertroman etwas ganz und gar eine kongeniale Adaption, die ebenso tiefgründig wie übermütig ist.

About the author

Austrian author and illustrator Nicolas Mahler has illustrated numerous school books and worked on several animated films, shown at festivals throughout Europe. Known for his striking minimalist drawing style and sardonic deadpan wit, Mahler's graphic novels have been published in France, Spain, the Czech Republic, Poland, Canada, and the United States as well as his native Austria. He has published over 20 books and created drawings for international magazines, newspapers, and anthologies.

I think you needed to read the book he is illustrating to actually understand this fully but all and all I like his style a lot.

Da ich das Original nicht gelesen habe, handlungstechnisch ziemlich unverständliche minimalistische Umsetzung. Perspektiven und Zeichnungen sind ebenso reduziert und der für mich interessanteste Aspekt dieses Comics.

Non ho letto il romanzo di Musil, ma dovrebbe essere possibile capire la trama anche senza conoscenza dell'opera originale: qui invece non si capisce niente e nemmeno lo stile di disegno è di mio gradimento.

Nette, bisweilen Mahler-typisch witzige Berarbeitung des Stoffes. Aber schwer bis gar nicht zu verstehen ohne die Vorlage zu kennen.

Der Stil hat mir sehr gefallen, allerdings glaube ich, dass man das Buch noch besser schätzen würde, wenn man (im Gegensatz zu mir) die Vorlage dazu liest. Trotzdem ein schnelles, interessantes Buch!

Ich mag den Zeichenstil nicht so gerne. Habe das Original nicht gelesen deshalb bewerte ich jetzt einfach dieWirkung der Kunst auf mich... Ich mag die Bewegung in den Panels und die Perspektiven.

Was fun to flip through and be reminded of some parts of "Mann ohne Eigenschaften" which is dear to me. I was disappointed that the later parts of the book weren't represented.

I would not recommend this if you haven't read "Mann ohne Eigenschaften" yet.

La graphic novel di Nicolas Mahler rende un giusto servizio all'immenso, fondamentale romanzo di Musil. Confesso di non aver mai finito la lettura del secondo tomo, e dunque con un po' di senso di colpa ho acquistato questa graphic novel, senso di colpa del tutto fugato dal piacere di ritrovare appieno in queste strip scarne, simboliche e a loro modo "filosofiche" tutto il senso del grande capolavoro di Musil. Forse, non molto consigliato a chi non abbia mai accostato il testo originario.
