Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers comes to an explosive conclusion as Lord Drakkon returns to Earth heralding tidings of evil from the outer reaches of space! But that's not the biggest problem, as Lord Zedd has a new plan to destroy both the Power Rangers and the Omega Rangers - enter the Dark Rangers! And if that wasn't enough Rangers for your buck, have a new Green Ranger too!

This volume comes in at five issues rather than the usual four, because it's packed to the brim with the final arc of the original series. There's lots of moving parts as this era of the saga comes to a close, even as the relaunch is gearing itself up in the background. It's nice for Lord Zedd to feel like a threat again - he and Rita have mostly taken a backseat to bigger problems in recent volumes, so he and his Dark Rangers (including one that I expect we'll be seeing a lot of in the future) are a welcome change. It all ends fairly well, but it's definitely a To Be Continued rather than a The End type ending, since Mighty Morphin' and Power Rangers started literally the month after, if I remember right.

Moses Hidalgo jumps in for these five issues since the usual Power Rangers artists were busy starting up the relaunch, and does a bang up job. The Boom! editorial team have a great eye for artists who can give the book the kinetic fight scenes and high drama character moments it deserves.

MMPR may be coming to an end, but the story is far from over. I expect anyone reading this volume will be chomping at the bit to see where we go from here.

4.3/5.0

From the original introduction pieces and volumes that Kyle Higgins brilliantly curates for the Angel Grove heroes, to Ryan Parrott's extension of the Mighty Morphin formula, the entirety of this series brings Power Ranger enthusiasts into a new and refreshing perspective on heroism tropes associated to the franchise.

There are some exquisitely written and drawn stories throughout this series that paint a painfully dark and dramatic image that many fans of Saban's original show are not generally accustomed to, which I believe makes for a thoroughly pleasurable reading experience.

It's a solid finish but nothing special.

I felt Parrott was setting up more than anything in this volume. The ending results, a new ranger, one not chosen how they are usually, gives us something new and probably bad. On top of that we got villains set for the next series. It felt like more of setting up the next series than a grand finale so I was a little let down but still fun.

A 3 out of 5.

The only reason this book wasn’t five stars for me was because I was enjoying it so much and then it ended somewhat abruptly, or so it felt like it did anyway. Regardless, I know this continues in Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers and I’m looking forward to those series very much!

So the Rangers seem extra…uh…spicy?…in this issue? Seems like Boom! finally encouraged some of the artists to lend the most detailed supermodel physiques to Tommy and Jason, and I’m not really all that sure how to feel about that. I think the weak point here is again the dual narratives — the space odyssey universe-at-threat plunge of the Omega Ranger storyline doesn’t do much for Trini and Jason (Zack gets a nice character moment in the last issue they appear in for this volume), whereas the return of Zedd and his new Dark Rangers is at least a lot more visually engaging back in the main thread. I think one of the moments that I think couldn’t have been sold without TONS of more buildup is the idea of any alliance with this version of Drakkon — it doesn’t make ANY sense for Grace, Billy, or anyone else to even entertain this without Señor Chang-levels of plot contrivance to make him sympathetic, but there isn’t even a whiff of those efforts in this volume. I’m guessing I’m approaching a reset within a few volumes, which I’m looking forward to not because of a dip in overall quality but just as a chance to re-center the narrative here.

Drakkon is back. Lord Zedd is back. This volume has a lot of great stuff in it. The Dark Rangers appear in a very different incarnation than in the original show. I enjoyed how the leader was described as devoid of empathy. The Green Ranger reveal is still upcoming and it's exciting to think of who it might be.

There's some great banter in the Dark Rangers fight scenes. The Mega Terrorzord!!!

This is very much a volume that's leading up to a lot of exciting things. I give this book a 5/5.

Yay! Volume 14 came out yesterday and that is exactly how long it took me to pick it up and read it! I loved this volume as it really set up the next two books they are doing. This series is now splitting off into Mighty Morphin which will follow the team of the same name and Power Rangers which will follow the Omega Rangers. Can't wait to see what those have in store for us!

I hated the designs of the Dark Rangers.

The shifting between the two teams killed any momentum.

Honestly, I wish I stopped at Shattered Grid because there’s a few good bits in the later arcs, it’s just all a mess.

Also, this isn’t even an ending. It literally ends with a TBC in a new series… why “end” a run but just continue under a new name?

Now to go back and finish up GGPR.

A fun conclusion to the series while leaving the door wide open for the next. This is a good way to transition to Mighty Morphin/Power Rangers. It was fun to see the henchmen get a little moment of glory before it all came crashing down. It will be interesting to see how the whole Drakkon thing plays out too.

I love how this series avoids scenes from the show but brings back items from the show and builds on their character(s).
