The time jump was unexpected but I love the direction Furudate took.
But out of all the people Hinata could've met ... him? I can't, that was too funny and awesome😂

Highlights

Kageyama saying “we have some damn good players on this team.”

Kenma: Hey, came to cheer up a friend.
SHUT UP

Edit:
Kuro to Kenma: hey, kenmakun. When you’re having a rough time just seeing a friend for a minute can go a looong way.
Kenma: I guess so…
Kuro: you know so.

Tsukki setting: carefully, gently.
That guy from the training camp paired with Tsukki: nice one.

Kageyama setting the ball right to Naruto and Yama as soon as they are subbed in.

Shut up the chapter name Our Spring comes to an end

The third years panel😭

IF SHOYO HADN'T EVER SEEN YOU ON TV THAT DAY..HE NEVER WOULD'VE CHOSEN TO BIKE OVER A MOUNTAIN TO GO TO KARASLINO, AND HE NEVER WOULD’VE MET TOBIO.

That whole panel with the Japanese coach. I really want that framed in my room.
“For today you happen to be the defeated. But what will you become tomorrow?”

Kageyama: But I wanted to take this team further.
😭😭😭

Hinata on a cycle looking at Kageyama playing for Japan on a TV in Brazil.

Nastu gifting him a wallet. Stawp.

Lmao Kageyama and Ushijima’s face😭😭

Oikawa is just too good.

Those Oikawa panels. Shut up😭
“Volleyball is fun. Every time I forget that, it comes back to remind me.”

Aww Pedro.

This volume gave me all the feels😭. I was keeping it all together but Yachi's narration hit me so hard. I couldn't stop after that. My babies.

I CRIED SO MUCH!! MY LOVES!!! IM SO PROUD OF THEM!! They all fought so hard and were the absolute best!! The way things ended at Nationals was honestly written so well. It made everything so much more impactful. And then, the time skip and just the recap of everything that happened took me out! But most importantly, Yamaguchi was captain!!!!!!! AND THEN SEEING OIKAWA AGAIN AHH!! This was just a whirlwind of emotions for me okay!

Edited Review 12/29/21: "No matter how hard or easy the skill…getting good at something new is always fun."

Furudate broke my heart this first half but stitched it back together with that second half. Seriously, it was like two different vibes completely, but I LOVED that second half so much. It is one of my all time favorite parts of the whole series! <3

Original Review 1/23/21: Yes, I read volume 42 of Haikyu.

No, I haven't read the other 39 volumes up to this point. (I've only read the first three volumes.)

But buying a book/manga of your all-time favorite anime AND having one the best manga covers ever AND your all-time favorite bookish character look EPIC on the said best manga cover?

Yeah, I'm going to skip ahead of the other volumes and read.

And it was seriously amazing!!

I legit hugged this volume in the bookstore when I got it and hugged it again after I skimmed through the inside.

Seriously, Furudate has to be a genius because despite some VERY emotional parts in the beginning, this volume is everything I wanted it to be. Heck, I didn't even KNOW what I needed until I read it, but this was definitely it.

I will say that I never want to see Hinata depressed again though. :P Even for however brief it was.

So so so many great and amazing things about this volume and over the moon excited for the next volume! Hinata continues to grow and be a powerful inspiration no matter how old he may be or wherever he may be. <3

i honestly don’t know how to organize my thoughts on this volume because everything was just so fast and i barely had time to breathe in between pages.

okay so they lost to kamomedai and then the third years graduated (daichi, suga, asahi, and kiyoko; i’ll miss u all) and they had this really thoughtful talk at the end of the match and i can’t process how the nationals arc was over that like that.

i expected myself to be more emotional at their loss, but honestly? it was yachi’s narration of what happened after the last arc that really made me tear up. im so proud of them they really made it to top 3 !!!!!! and then when they graduated kageyama and hinata had this last practice over at karasuno’s court and that one made me beam up so much.

fast forward to when they’re alduts-ish?? kageyama said fuck college and went on the path his prodigy ass was destined to be on. tsukki and tadashi went to college w yachi (damn graphic designer tingz!!!) and hinata went to brazil????? then he met up with oikawa (<3) and he had this whole adorable weeb thing with his roommate omg.

i thought i would be more depressed at the end of this volume but i feel more hopeful and satisfied in some way. i dont know what’ll happen to the next chapters and im antsy about wrapping up this shitty review.

that was one hell of a ride karasuno, thank you.

Haruichi Furudate took a major risk here. Not only does the unthinkable (for readers) happen - Karasuno loses - but then the four third-years graduate...and then we jump forward three years. We learn a bit of what happens to some of the characters - Kageyama, Ushiwaka, hints about the other first-years at Karasuno we came into the series with - but the main character is and always has been Hinata, and the fact of the matter is that people don't always keep up with high school friends and teammates after graduation. Everyone's got their own lives, and though the former first-years all seem to be keeping in touch, that's it.

It's hard to swallow, especially if one of the others was your favorite character. (There's definitely solace for Oikawa fans, though.) But it feels natural, and if I contemplated stopping the series, I was glad I changed my mind in the end. It's a blow after forty-one and a half volumes, but it isn't a deal-breaker, because no matter how intense things were, in the end, it's only high school.

There's a lot more life to live from here on out.

Since I'm just reading chapters I'm not 100% where these volumes end. But WOW. That was intense and I'm trying so hard to hold back tears.

1. 3rd year hinata shoyo's hair. LOVE.

2. hinata w compression sleeves in brazil. LOVE.

3. OIKAWA IN BRAZIL WITH HINATA???? LOVE.

4. hinata must have felt so so so alone, and also so behind. watching kageyama on the olympics, being in a whole different country, alone. and then suddenly seeing a familiar face? i love that oikawa and hinata became friends, hearing a familiar language, some connection to his high school and origin.

This broke my heart because I hate seeing my babies cry. And I’m so mad I don’t get to see any games of them as third years with Yams as captain. It just goes from nationals to a time skip. Hinata seems to be having fun in Rio though. Sun baby just went to a place with more sun lol. Seeing him miss his friends hurt a little though. Kageyama went pro though. What happened to the rest of my babies??

Oh lord I’m reading this too fast. I don’t wanna be done with haikyu 😭

It's sad to see the end of everyone's high school days, but it's also refreshing to see Hinata grown up--I'm so proud of how far he's come as a volleyball player. It was so great to see Oikawa in this volume too, I missed him a lot during the last arc! I can't wait to see what everyone else is doing in the coming chapters.

I was totally not prepared for the direction this went. Skimmed over high school and right into adult mode. Of course everybody split up and went all different directions. 😞
