Whoa, this MIGHT be my favorite volume so far.

We get Gojo backstory here and holy shit is it sad/epic. Just when I thought the fight scenes couldn't be topped, the brutality of scenes, this volume tops it. Brutal deaths throughout as we also get the background to Toji and just how powerful he really is. We also get the background of Geto and what broke him to turn him into the person he is today. So many characters broken and breaking in this series is that when we DO get to present time it is even sadder.

I'm really loving this current last two volumes. Give me more, give me more, Jujutsu is some prime ass good SHIT!

You see this dichotomy in fiction (as well as in real life) alot where two people emerge from same event but with differing perspectives, but never was I sadder to see this except in this one.

Geto was a sensible foil to Gojo, they both had same objectives, but watching Geto do complete 180° shift of methodology by the end of this volume was very tragic, if anything. Tables turned, I loved watching Gojo have a moment of god-complex, and I completely despised Toji. I know where he's coming from, but he's awful, both as a person and as a father.

second read

This volume is like psychological terrorism for anybody who even remotely cares about the characters in this arc. And I am those people. Ouch?? Every time I read anything to do with this arc I’m astounded at not only how brilliant Gege’s writing was within the first third of the series (not that he’s horrible later on! I just tend to prefer the earlier arcs, whether that’s nostalgia or something else) but also how differently the story could have gone at different points of tension. Toji or Geto or Gojo making a slightly different decision at any point during this could have changed the trajectory of the story spanning the next thirteen years. No spoilers for Shibuya, but you know what I’m talking about. It’s just insane, and I miss how Gege used to tie things together in a more believable way.

first-read

I’ve always loved that there wasn’t some ginormous Gojo vs Geto fight to end off the arc. As sick as that would have been, the fact that they actually talk about it (via a horrific excuse for communication skills, but alas) does a good job of communicating to the reader the causes for Geto’s choices toward the end of the volume.

pre-read

i just know gojo's shit was rocked when last kiss by taylor swift came out in 2010 like his ass was on the floor rocking back and forth and sobbing uncontrollably to that bridge

I didn't expect that this volume would hurt me so much than I anticipated. I bawled when I read the confrontation between Satoru and Suguru. I am a mess. This volume left me with a broken heart. I love the action scenes, the art style, the flash back. Everything. This has become my favorite volume.

Here, we get to see the other side of what it's like being a Jujutsu Sorcerer trying to protect humans that we don't even know if they deserve it. We've been following Yūji who wants to protect everyone which had buried deep in our mind that all Jujutsu Sorcerers is exactly the same as him. Which wasn't the case with Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru.

The battle scene between Gojo and Toji is amazing. Even the art style. It feels like I was watching an anime rather than reading a manga and that's what I really like about here in this volume. During the battle scene, Gojo created a technique that is beyond unimaginable and only he can make it happen. In that sequence we caught a glimpse of Geto Suguru's simming insecurities and hatred towards himself and towards the Jujutsu Sorcerers.

The feeling of not knowing what you are achieving and what are your goals haunted every Geto Suguru's step. We see him as someone who pulls Gojo's leash and always keep him in check. He is that kind of character that Gojo could depend on. Someone who could watch his back. Until that one event where it became Geto Suguru's unbecoming.

The event that made both of them contemplate whether what they are doing for the humanity is deserving. In the past volumes, we know that there is something dark just brewing inside Gojo and that we know he wanted to remove someone who's sitting in the throne and that he doesn't want to kill them but would rather teach students and raise them to be his allies to overthrow the one sitting at the top. We saw his hatred towards the chain and here, we unlocked another part of him that is untamed and boiling with cold ice anger.

The person they had to protect now perished. One saw how they died in front of their eyes without being able to do something and the other, carrying that person in their arms while the humans applaud for their death. I expected Gojo to snap during that scene and as I watch the scene unfold, I saw the realization in both of the characters eyes that those are humans they're trying to protect. The exact humans who found someone's death entertaining and that something to be happy about. Gojo contemplated and asked Geto if he should kill them. Geto Suguru said that there is no meaning to it if they killed those people. Yet, as we dive deeper into the volume, we saw how it had taken its toll on Geto.

Hatred, passion, internal struggle, morality and lastly, the ugliness of humanity followed each of Geto Suguru's step. The bitterness of devouring cursed spirits in order to protect the humans became an endless cycle for him. The humans that he had to protect now turning into a monster in his eyes and he struggled to fight against the thought. He was struggling and having a hard time for finding the true meaning of his purpose and break free of the cycle.

That is what I really liked about in this volume. It tackled a lot of dark themes and how all of those actions had made the characters drown into their despair and made them harder to breathe. Worse, succumb to the darkness and madness. Blinded by the negative emotions, they still tried to fight against it in order for them to not be consumed. I love how they showed the conflict between what is right or wrong, who deserve to die and who doesn't, who deserves to be protected and who deserves to be sacrificed. All of those shown in just 9 chapters in one volume. It took me by surprise for slowly showing me the ugliness of the humans and how it affected their "protector" and bend their mentality.

Like a flame doused by oxygen, an event finally triggered something deep inside Geto Suguru which resulted to him massacring an entire village while saving two children who are probably curse users and only committed a crime out of self defense. During that scene, we know Geto Suguru's hanging by a thread and just one step, he will snap. What the old man did to those kids and what he said is the reason why the thread snapped and set Suguru loose.

I cried during the confrontation between Geto and Gojo. How devastated Gojo was when he found out that Geto killed a lot of people. How the person who stopped him from killing, was the exact person who killed an entire village. I literally bawled when Gojo did not kill Geto. Their friendship finally broken. Yet, even if Geto committed those crimes, Gojo still spared him twice. Gojo couldn't seem to kill his friend. The person who's been with him during the hard times, the person who had kept him in check. The person who he could depend on. The very friend he could see his future with.

This broke me into tiny fragile pieces and now, with just two steps in the front, we will finally enter the huge event that I am for sure will tore me into more tiny pieces until I am nothing but dust in the wind. not looking forward for the next volumes.

I loved the scenes where Fushiguro and Gojo were about to kill each other, but then Gojo didn't let that happiness last long. That backstory was really something and I loved it<3
Also, I want to know more about Megumi's past because that boy can do more than he can do!

“We hold no regrets in falling among the stars.”

Insurmountable sadness is exactly the way I would describe this volume. I knew something like this was bound to happen, it is impossible not to know it after all the things that we have seen in previous volumes and all the hints we have been provided with, but that doesn't mean that it hurt anything less.

Coming from the arguably lighter and funnier time we had last it was... a bit of a shock to find myself in this circumstance.

That, of course, doesn't mean that I love it anything less, because I still think it was brilliantly done and just perfect to explain and connect everything. Even do it hurts, I would not change a single thing.

“In order to reaffirm my identity I warped my usual self. I had already lost at that point. I thought I had discarded that pride…”

Seeing how everything is so perfectly connected and makes so much sense makes me really happy. Honestly, a lot of that was already there just lacking a bit of context to make it all fit in the puzzle.

I was really, really shocked when things started to take the turn they did.

Even through everything I had hope for things to turn out differently than what I knew was bound to happen, well, rather, I knew the outcome but was not prepare for the journey to get there, and that is not on anyone but on me.

One of the most impressive things is the way Gege managed to fit it all, the story that we had been waiting for a while, with all its changes and turns in so few chapters and still make it feel perfectly paced. I didn't doubt even for a second that there was enough time for it all.

I think, if anything, the timing and pacing just enhanced the way everything hit me and the hurt it all brought.

“The preciousness of the weak, the ugliness of the weak. I’ve been unable to separate them, or accept them.”

There's no doubt that this is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, volumes so far.

It also makes the story feel much more serious and like we are reaching a boiling point... which I supposed is true if the dates are anything to go by.

Honestly, I am quite scared to keep going but I am equally excited... not the most confidence-inducing combination of feelings. If there was ever a time to quit, this was definitely it.
____________

My God, my God, my God... this volume was sad.

I literally devoured it because it was so interesting but it also made me really sad.

RTC.
____________

Okay, okay, I'm sure everything will be alright and everyone will be happy, right? Right?

Well, all I know is that I am ready to have my heart destroyed a little because things are dicy right now, but also to be able to get to know these characters a little better and a little more.

Here we go!

¿o no?

Interesante.

Two entire volumes of Geto and Gojo backstory??? We are being spoiled, truly. I swear I’ve said the last few volumes were my favourite, but I lied yet again because this one was damn near perfect. The fights were incredible (especially Gojo vs. Toji), and can we talk about Gojo taking care of young Megumi?? Lord, my heart is in shambles.

I am not okay ( ;∀;) It feels like torture to relive all that gojo and geto go through in volume 8 and 9. But I will be honest, of all of the manga volumes, I'd most definitely buy these two. The storyline is just so good but also fucking heartbreaking. They broke up in front of KFC, guys 😭

This was so fantastic and ahh, seeing Gojo and Geto at Jujutsu High was so pure (we also got little Nanami snippets too). It’s interesting to see how their paths diverged and the catalyst for the change. I’m obsessed with JJK!
