Edit 4/14: I JUST learned that the Hero's Spirit is the Hero of Time from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask?! It makes sense, as it was mentioned that he had been a hero of Hyrule before, and the story directly links back to Ocarina of Time in ways that none of the other stories/games has, but I somehow didn't make the connection or bothered to look into it until now. Since I've been reading the non-Twilight Princess books by Himekawa recently, I've been doing research surrounding some of the older, smaller legend of Zelda Games, and WOW has my knowledge of LOZ lore expanded. I always assumed the Hero's Spirit was some random dude but now that I know it's and old Link I feel so much more connected to him. But that raises the question, how has no one realized that every single hero's name is Link? I understand everything with Zelda because every Zelda is a reincarnation of the Goddess Hylia herself, but I still don't understand what's up with Link.
I've binged the series up until this point but I can't read the next book yet! My library doesn't have a copy of the 9th book yet, although I'm sure it will get one soon, and obviously the tenth book will probably not be released in English for a while. Ah, I honestly feel like I'm going to die because I've been loving this series so much, and this book was no exception, but now I have to wait to read more! I started this series just because it was Legend of Zelda and because I wanted something fun to read, but I ended up becoming way more invested in the story than I originally intended. Man this review is already starting out overly emotional for no reason and now I'm going to start crying before I actually start talking about the story. It's not the end but for some reason it feels like it is anyway.
Edit 2/11: My library just ordered the next book! I put it on hold and I'm going to read it as soon as it comes in! :D
Midna certainly had an interesting role in this book, and she's always been a very unique character, but this book really showed her struggles as her and Link are getting closer to their ultimate goal. She clearly really cares for Link and his enjoying his friendship, but she is struggling with her responsibility as the leader of the Twilight Realm, and it creates tension within herself as she tries to decided whether to live with her brain or live with her heart. She's realized that she cares about Hyrule and the World of Light, despite the way leaders of Hyrule have treated the Twilight Realm in the past. Part of her says that she has the right to be selfish because the Twilight Realm has been mistreated in the past, but she also doesn't want to hurt any of her new friends either. And now the book has left us on a cliffhanger because Midna was about to tell a bit about her past, but of COURSE the book ended.
I really liked getting to see City in the Sky, because it is a place in Hyrule that I am not very familiar with. The whole portion of the book revolving that location was amazing- discovering the location, getting there, meeting the adorable Oocca, and fighting the dragon. I feel kind of bad that the roof on that Kakariko Village building got blasted off, but I liked how Link and Shad Revali-Galed themselves into the sky. The Oocca might be one of my favorite creatures that we have gotten to meet so far and they were so adorable. They had super cute designs, and I loved how funny they looked when they weren't super detailed. They were such an expressive group of individuals, and they really were the sweetest things. They remind me of the koroks, and I really hope that they make an appearance in BOTW 2, which would be quite appropriate for that game. The way Ooccoo cried when he was showing all the buildings that had been destroyed broke my heart, and I the FACT that something happened to upset one of my babies makes me want to run around in a murderous rage.
Now I want to talk about the only thing that I would consider as cute as the Occas- Shad. Oh man I absolutely adore him. I mean, how can you not? He's the klutzy nerd character who is really sweet, but inside is an incredibly intelligent character who is much more well-rounded than you would have initially thought. I fell in love with Shad when he first appeared in the fourth book, and I'm really glad he got to shine in this book. It was so cute watching him and Link become close, to the point that Link thinks of him as his friend, which I thought was sweet. And of course Shad is also a great comic-relief character as well. This series is relatively serious, so we rarely get to see any of those classic funny expressions that you commonly see in manga and anime, and about 90% of those moments in this series were through Shad. He's so expressive and hilarious, with my personal favorite moments being when he fell of the building and got scooped up by Ooccoo, who is such an amazing babysitter, and when the Ooccas sent him down in the little pod and Shad screamed his head off. I'm sure he's alright, but I'm curious how he got down. Maybe there was a little parachute? At least he can use the pod as proof of the City in the Sky.
This wasn't really a proper review- it was just me crying about the fact I have to wait for the next book and me fawning over the Ooccas and Shad. Oh well, I couldn't just not talk about that. I'm really upset that I have to wait because the story is starting to near the climax, and I'm really excited to see what happens next. I could honestly look up the ending of Twilight Princess, but at this point I don't want to spoil it. I know in the end good will prevail, but I know I'm still going to get really nervous during the final fight. I'm guessing in the next book Link is going to go after Zant, and then probably in the next two he'll fight Ganondorf, which I am so excited for. I honestly don't know if I'll be able to survive the two-ish year wait for the final installment to come out in English.
