Based on the popular video game, this manga’s phantom thieves will steal your heart!

After being arrested and having to transfer to a new high school in Tokyo, Akira Kurusu is given the goal of rehabilitation and awakened to a new power—the power of one’s true self, a Persona. Using his Persona and the mysterious navigation app Mementos, Akira and his friends take on the role of Phantom Thieves, saving people from the twisted desires of those around them.

First, the Phantom Thieves reformed twisted schoolteacher Suguru Kamoshida. Next, they succeeded in changing the heart of their second target, the master artist Ichiryusai Madarame. But back in the real world, Shujin Academy student council president Makoto Nijima is starting to suspect that Akira and his friends may be more than just average students. Meanwhile, a criminal organization operating in Shibuya has started to target high school students in a new, devious scam. Will the Phantom Thieves be able to prove they’re the good guys while keeping their identities a secret?!

Not happy that the manga decided to still incorporate the one terrible thing about the game: the horrible homophobic scene. There was an absolute opportunity there to skim over this or replace it with something that isn't just plainly offensive, but no attempt was made. This is the one knock about the game and is now the one knock on this manga series, and it was completely unnecessary. I'm still rating it quite highly because I felt like apart from the spread, the book felt a bit more lively and back on form of the beginning of the series.

The art is gorgeous as usual and so far I still really enjoy the manga they work the confidants in the story in a way that feels natural rather than forced. Makoto joining the crew now it’s about to get so good.

I would recommend this book to people who enjoy a ton of action and superpowers, but also some school drama and romance. Every time I read it, I wondered what would happen next because of all the suspense and action that goes on in the story. The story is set in modern day Tokyo, and the main character, Akira, faces the challenge of changing evil people’s hearts by being transported into the metaverse, which is basically a dystopia. In the beginning of the story, Akira gets transferred to a new high school, in which he meets Ryuji, a jokester, Anne, a model, and a talking cat named Morgana. Together, they form the group "The Phantom Thieves", and work together to obtain justice and freedom from the horrendous people in society. The author explores the theme of freedom and justice, making the point that everyone deserves to be free and live their life without selfish, narcissistic nuisances who treat you like garbage.

I'm demoting the entire series to 3 stars instead of 4, because I feel that it is strictly a series for fans of the videogame.
The rest of the readership might feel a bit... cheated. Art is good but not great, especially if it can't remind you of a game you haven't played, and you don't even have the combat sections to compensate for the very, very chatty parts.
I still love my Ka-tet, hmm scratch that... I mean my Phantom Thieves, but I'm reading Beastars at the same time, and Persona clearly suffers from the comparison.

Gorgeous artwork, as with all the others, but bloody hell is it hard to visually parse what’s happening or read the teeny font sometimes.
