After the war, cyborg soldiers known as the Extended were discharged. Juzo Inui is one of them, a man whose body was transformed, his head replaced with a giant gun. With no memory of his previous life—or who replaced his head and why—Inui now scratches out a living in the dark streets of the city as a Resolver, taking on cases involving the Extended.
In the stifling darkness of the Extended detention center known as the Weapons Vault, Juzo and Mary come face-to-face with their own pasts. They went in looking for a way to repair Juzo, but Mary also wants to find out what happened to her brother Victor. Deep inside the vault, they encounter Number Twelve, a GSU that Juzo thought he had destroyed. The forgotten knowledge he possesses may give Juzo the strength and purpose to continue his struggle against Berühren.
This second arc was somewhat confusing, in plot as well as in art.
As impressive as they are the multiple body extensions popping out of nowhere make it hard to follow what is happening sometimes. Plot-wise Violet is ott psycho and doesn’t make for a really interesting character when Behrüren’s endgame remains nebulous to say the least. The spoilery part between Ito and a former GSU from his unit was good though.
I hope the final arc will bring a satisfying conclusion to a series that agreeably surprised me so far.
Once again, great volume, and great illustrations in every page. I'm really liking how the story is progressing so far, and I have the feeling that it's gonna tone down a bit until the end, which I think it's a couple of volumes away... Can't wait to see what happens!
I haven't really paid much attention to it before now, because this is fiction and you need to be able to suspend disbelief, but I think they're getting a little excessive with the use of hammer space.
Juzo gets a new spine, courtesy of Number 12. Mary meets Victor but he is killed by Valentine and wasn’t all there to begin with. His sub brain lives on and is stolen. A few bad guys escaped the vault and start to reek havoc but we don’t really get to see too much of that.
3.5 stars. I'll admit, the first time I read this volume, I found it kind of confusing. I wish there was a character/plot summary at the beginning of the volumes to help explain certain key elements, such as reminding me of the parallel sub-brain's significance/how it works, the Arahabakis, etc. I'm also not a huge fan of Valentine, so that was a bit of a drag, but I really love Mary and Juzo, so getting to see them both grow was really nice.
