MY THOUGHTS: (LUKE) I really enjoyed this book. it's got really good illustrations, and it made me laugh in places. I found it exciting, and the plot is also super good and funny. Cinder was my favorite character because he was the main character. I like Cinders color and it is orange. Cinder is very clever. A quarter of the time he gets in trouble.
I liked it so much that I got Nana to go to the library to get the next two books.
(SANDY) I needed a graphic novel to cross a square off my book bingo card and Luke seemed to enjoy this so much, I thought I would give it a try - and I enjoyed it! The Coldfire Curse focuses on friendship, family and teamwork. I'm now going to read the next two books before returning them to the library. Coldfire Curse ends on a cliffhanger - and I HAVE to know what happens. 🤣🤣

With H finishing up the Anna Hibiscus series, I find myself desperately in need of new books to read to her, which always sparks a stalking of my book groups for suggestions and a putting-on-hold of all the books that sound even the slightest bit promising in the hopes that *something* might work out.
The Coldfire Curse was one of those recommended. I have finally learned my lesson about prereading, so I sat down with it--it's a graphic novel aimed at kids in the 6-9ish range, so it was a very quick read. And unfortunately, it's very clearly not one that H would enjoy. And while it's something her older sisters would probably have fun with, it's not one I would care to offer them. There's nothing terribly *wrong* with it, but neither is there enough of value in it that would make me want to introduce it to them.

The Kingdom of Wrenly was first introduced to readers in a (still expanding) chapter book series in 2014; these spin-off titles follow Rushkin, a legendary scarlet dragon who hatched in book two of the original series. In book one, Rushkin leaps at the chance to go on an adventure, away from his quiet life at the palace as a princely pet. The dragons of Crestwood are infected with the Coldfire Curse, which will spread across the Kingdom if the cure isn't found soon. Luckily, Rushkin and two other young dragons band together, traveling far and facing magical dangers, to save everyone. Book two delves more deeply into the lore of Wrenly as Rushkin is once again tasked with a quest along with his two new friends. But a villain lurks in the shadows even as the trio overcome obstacles and prevent a devastating fire storm and break a dreary enchantment. A preview at the end of each volume piques readers' interest for the following installment.
These two titles are fast-paced with a quest-based storyline that is easy to follow and quick to be resolved. This formula is perfect for newly independent readers and will quickly hook its target audience, drawing them further in with some silly dialog and strong themes of friendship and self-confidence that caregivers will greatly appreciate. The three main characters of Rushkin, Groth, and Cinder are all loveable and easy to connect with; each has a unique personality, though it should be noted that Rushkin is the only one (so far) experiencing a character arc, making his character more malleable for future volumes. Quinn's dialog and story are well-matched with Greco's colorful art, adding to the action scenes in particular as dragons swoop through the air or magic rushes through a panel.
Some character and setting introductions feel rushed, placing a short page count over connection to the story. This may be due to the fact that some readers will be familiar with the lore of Wrenly from the original series, but overall does a disservice to the books.

The drawings are really cute and dynamic. It has a similar premise as the Wings of Fire but isn’t as protracted with all the pre-teen drama. It’s a simple adventure.

I love the part where he has a dream that he's chasing bacon. It's funny. Later he tries to hold a fire burp. Another funny part is where she whacks Groth on the head with his tail. -Megan (6)

This is great! I read this graphic novel so I understand Liam when he wants to talk about it. It was super adorable, easy to read (he is dyslexic and did well), and the illustrations are cool. It moves quickly and approaching page-turner status. Liam is (I am) super pumped to read the next one!

I found this comic by random chance and immediately found the art gorgeous. I thought Why not? I don't care if it's for a much younger audience.
It's more than fine, but I think it has a big pacing issue, things happens too fast and doesn't give time to get accustomed to the story, I wish there was more exploring, more time for development, more time for friendships to form. Dialogues are a bit dry and predictable, I'm not sure if it was due to the translation as I read it in Italian. Characters are still super cute and charming.
I believe that even as a kid, I would have liked it just fine, but not loved it as much as I wanted to.
I'm still curious about the rest of the series and will continue.

I actually wasn’t aware there were other graphic novels featuring dragons besides Wings of Fire, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out I was wrong. The Coldfire Curse, though short, was a nice little read. It wasn’t my favorite, with some of the dialogue feeling empty of any sort of emotion, leaving the impression that the characters are bored about whatever situation they’re in, and some parts feel slightly rushed, but regardless, it’s still a good story, and no, I’m not just saying that because of the dragons :3

This series will make an excellent addition to any K-5 library or classroom! For young readers who love dragons, this story is a page turner, constantly leaving the reader wanting to know what’s next. The reading level will invite some of our youngest readers to give the book a try, and the exciting story will hold the attention of older students as well.

This is a book that intrigued me when I was at the store since it has dragons and is a fantasy book even though unfortunately it is a graphic novel. I was hoping that the book was as interesting as it promised and would help me to overlook the fact of its graphic nature.
What makes this book to be a great read for younger readers is the fact that it is a quick read from Point A to B and has small-to-no plot twists. As a result the reader doesn't get lost in small details that need to be memorized nor do they have to figure out what is going on as they will be taken to the right conclusion. Although this combined together helps to make a book for a younger reader with a low reading capacity it won't help the more experienced reader who likes the meat of the tale and character development that helps to make the same characters stand out.
Given the point the book is the first one in the series it should provide the reader with much more background about Crestwood and provide character development as well. Instead with one of the main dragons it took over half of the book for me to get to know that that particular kit was actually female instead of a male dragon kit, which made things a bit weird.
At the same time the illustrations and the colors were bright while certainly did make up a bit for the lack of the story altogether. But in the end with its repetitiveness and lack of build-up I just couldn't find myself getting lost in this particular dragon fantasy series.

Really more of 4.5 rating. This is just an adorable, easy book for the adult, but packed with adventure for the 7-8 to 10 year-olds. This book is about three dragons who learn of a legend, must deal with a curse and along the way they make good friends. You, the adult, know they will be okay, the curse will be stopped and probably who the real bad guys (or dragons) are. The graphic novel illustrations are perfectly detailed, they are bright and cute. I really can't wait for more in the series. It reminded me of an easy The Dragon Prince, if told from the point of view of Zym (the baby dragon/the princ) and dealt with him and other dragons. Though humans play a small role.

The rich illustrations and exciting adventure make this a fun read. However, the curse, the prophecy, and how the Scarlet Dragon (Ruskin) end the curse are all things that aren't explained well. This graphic novel is written like the comic books of old where you have to pick up the next volume right away because of the ending. This may not be an issue for some, but I felt like the story was incomplete because of this. This book is loved by children and keeps them reading, so that's another definite plus!

I picked this up because my daughter loves books about dragons. I read the more advanced books and graphic novels that she reads first just to make sure that they are ok for her. She is young and also a precocious reader. Anyway, I was happy that I read this one. Ruskin is a scarlet dragon who is the pet of the prince of the ruling family of the kingdom. He gets pulled into a kingdom wide crisis when a young dragon from Crestwood comes to beg him to help. The Coldfire Curse is spreading across the whole kingdom, and the young dragons need to find a solution. The illustrations in this were so cute, and my daughter loved this too. She wrote a book review on it and gave it 1229499939000 out of 10 haha.
There was a clear problem here that the dragons needed to fix and boy did they battle through every obstacle in their path. This story was so sweet and the little dragons so brave and cute. It was totally adorable, and honestly I am going to keep reading this because it really was entertaining and very sweet.
