Murphy Brothers Story #2

In Spite of Ourselves

Rate this book
Who could build a life on such a monumental mistake?

Jackson Murphy: family prankster, class clown… and now, smack in the middle of a Vegas-sized mess. All he’d wanted was to qualify for the Boston Marathon. After failing that goal, he slipped into a deep, sulking valley, only to emerge from it with a much bigger problem. He’s married. To a complete stranger! Forget making a world-class marathon so that his family will believe that (1) he’s capable of being grown up and serious on occasion and (2) he doesn’t need the ongoing pity about his brother and a certain ex-girlfriend.

Now? Now he has no idea what to do.

Mackenzie Murphy: independent woman and excellent student—but not a med student. Because those pesky MCATs were H-A-R-D. She doesn’t particularly mind that much, seeing as she’s never really wanted to be a doctor, but her mother will be…uh, displeased. Exceptionally. That’s nothing, however, compared to how Mother will respond if she finds out what else happened in Vegas.

Mackenzie wants out. Jackson wants a chance. Neither of them is prepared for what’s coming. Caught in the middle of a disaster that keeps getting bigger, they hardly dare ask: Can God take their monumental mistake and turn it into a beautiful life?

In Spite of Ourselves, Book 13 in The Potter's House Books Series Two, is an uplifting and inspiring story of hope, redemption and second chances. It is also book Two in Jennifer Rodewald's Murphy Brother Stories (book One is Always You). Grab your copy and be encouraged today.

Jennifer Rodewald is passionate about the Word of God and the powerful vehicle of story. Four kids and her own personal superman make her home in southwestern Nebraska delightfully chaotic.

Born in Colorado, she experienced both the seclusion of rugged mountain living and the busy streets of a Denver suburb during her growing up years. Somewhere in the middle of college, she married a Husker and found her way back to the quiet lifestyle of a rural area, which suits just fine.

Blessed with a robust curiosity, Jen loves to research. Whether she’s investigating the history of a given area, the biography of a Christian icon, or how nature declares the glory of God, her daily goal is to learn something new. Aiming to live with boundless enthusiasm, her creed is vision, pursuit, and excellence.

Jen lives and writes in a lovely speck of a town where she watches with amazement while her children grow up way too fast, gardens, and marvels at God’s mighty hand in everyday life.

In Spite Of Ourselves by Jennifer Rodewald is a most delightful Christian contemporary novel about the power of love. It is part of the Potter’s house series and book two in the Murphy Brothers series but can be read as a stand-alone.
The central theme is about love – learning to love like God, learning to give and receive love. A life starved of love is just a half-life. Not everyone who loves has a motive behind their love. The novel shows how we are loved unconditionally for just who we are.
Sometimes we need to break out from the lessons of our upbringing. Our childhood shapes the adult we become but sometimes we have learnt the wrong lessons. A character has been taught to be independent, that love is not needed, to be strong is to live emotionally isolated. This is flawed thinking. We need others. We need love and we need God.
There is a wonderful warm welcome from the Murphy family. The love radiates outwards from the parents. There is infectious good natured teasing.
Life leaves its scars. Some are visible, others are hidden. Our scars show the battles we have overcome.
Our lives may seem messy and chaotic but God does His best work as He transforms our messes into masterpieces.
I love Jennifer Rodewald’s novels. They are warm and welcoming with God at the core. In Spite Of Ourselves is a gentle read about overcoming our fears and letting God in. I adored it.
I will leave you with my favourite quote:
“I don’t go to church to celebrate my goodness. I go to worship His.”
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

For the love of Cats! What are the odds of marrying someone you just met in Vegas and fall in love? If the hero is Jackson Murphy the odds are pretty good. He is probably one of the best heroes I have read in a while. His unconditional love was so swoon worthy. This book reminded me in a way of Francine Rivers' Redeeming Love, but with this book being a contemporary romance. The characters are flawed but oh so precious. I especially loved Jackson's mom and dad. This book shows how a mistake can turn into a "happy accident".

The faith in this book made my heart twist and reminded my soul how loving and Redeeming my God is ❤️
(Which I need so much .. I feel enthralled by God's love)

This was a perfect Christian contemporary romance.. we'll take my word there's no preaching kinda Christian .. it's a deep relationship with God and Love of God kinda telling.

Perfect plot to keep me engaged , thrilled about how's it gonna turn out..
The characters were everything, their development and true personalities made me think of myself and how changed I am and how blessed am I to have such a wonderful family.

I'd say this was perfect read for me and will be for anyone who choose to read it(I hope you do choose .. it's just beautiful)

You'll love it
Highly recommended

There aren’t many authors who could convince me to pick up a married-in-Vegas romance, but Jennifer Rodewald is one of them. And boy did I love this one.

The main obstacle for me with a premise like this is making a Vegas marriage believable without completely turning me off the characters. This book gets a big tick for that box. Was it still a dumb move? Absolutely. But it was also out of character for both Jackson and Mackenzie—and both for completely different reasons, I might add, which was another ingredient in this story’s success.

With the premise hurdle out of the way, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion I would love this novel. Jennifer Rodewald is one of my favourite contemporary romance authors because of the warmth in her writing, the emotional connection she creates between her characters, and the way she pushes her characters to grow through whatever situation they happen to be facing. For this particular story, I need to add that I completely fell in love with Jackson Murphy. He’s flawed, for sure, but he also knows how to love well, and I love the way he demonstrates this to Mackenzie. And I love even more what it means for her.

There’s also the fact that this was essentially a modern marriage of (in)convenience story, just with a bit of a twist. I loved that too. Really, there was every reason to love this story, and I can’t wait for the next in the series!

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Here’s a novel that has zoomed up to take its place near the top of my favorites list! In Spite of Ourselves really showcases God’s love for us, not only in the way that God can work through any situation, but also in the way that Jackson ended up being called to love his wife, even when she was being decidedly unlovable.

This moving story grabbed hold of me and didn’t let go. Mackenzie is perhaps one of the most emotionally messed up characters that I have ever read about. Her mother really did a number on her growing up and the way Mackenzie views men and their motives is heavily influenced by what she was taught. But Jackson keeps surprising her and makes her question all that her mother has told her.

My heart broke for Jackson over and over. He was a character that I couldn’t help but love right from the start. He has regrets and things that bother him. He tries to put on a brave face to the world and is known to his family as quite the prankster. However, I quickly realized what a deep, loving, sensitive guy he was and felt for him as he tried to show Mackenzie how important she was to him. I truly loved this story!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

'I will choose love, even when it's hard.'

How in this world did Jackson Murphy get himself in such a colossal mess? Sure, he's always been the funny, pranking Murphy brother, but this? He is married. To a complete stranger! A Las Vegas mistake of gigantic proportions. Now how will he face his family? The family who thinks he should have grown up by now. MacKenzie Murphy (only just) is an independent, take care of herself woman. She thought. But she finds herself married to someone she wants rid of. Yesterday. She wants out of this marriage, but Jackson wants a chance to prove himself. This huge mistake just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Can God take this mess and make a blessing? A second chance?

Jennifer Rodewald has always been a go-to author for me. She proves it with each book she writes. This one held me enthralled. Completely. God's mercy and grace is written all over every page. He and only He can bring peace and happiness out of even the biggest mistakes. Happiness from sadness. Joy out of ashes. I wept reading some of this. Worth every minute of reading time. I highly recommend this one, folks.

I loved this book! It got me from the beginning and wouldn't let go. That is the kind of book I love to read. Jackson was fun and so caring. MacKenzie was a messed up girl but came around. I wish the book had not ended.

I received an ARC but it in no way influenced my opinion.

Jackson Murphy finds himself drunk and married to Mackenzie Thorton while in Las Vegas, but the story doesn't stay stuck in that mistake that only humans can make, but what most of us forget is that God can redeem any mistake if we let Him. I was first introduced to Jackson in the first Murphy Brothers Story, and I liked him right off, so I was glad to see what his story was about and learn what kind of person he was. Mackenzie Thorton has her life mapped out by her mother, but by marrying Jackson she has completely changed the tractetory of her life, however, she doesn't realize it at the time.

I don't know how Jennifer Rodewald does it, but she is always able to dig deep in relatively shallow waters and bring up something that stands out and shines.

I highly recommend this compelling contemporary romance! This is the second of Jennifer Rodewald’s “Murphy Brothers” stories, though it reads as a standalone. I also enjoyed the first book, Always You.

In Spite of Ourselves is another shining contemporary romance from Jennifer Rodewald! It spins a marriage of convenience trope with a hint of a fake relationship situation to be a sometimes light and humorous, sometimes deep and heart-stirring story of what real love looks like.

One thing I always enjoy about Jen’s stories is her near-conversational tone of writing. With tiny hints for the perceptive reader, this story unfolds to be much more that what it is seen on the surface. When it deepens, and Jackson and Mackenzie’s background and motivations are clearer, it’s like an “aha” moment of understanding the complexity of the “iceburg” underneath.

Both Jackson and Mackenzie begin at a place of brokenness and misconception, but because of their mistakes they have opportunity to extend grace and accept the truth of God’s ability to transform a mess into a masterpiece. The beauty of this story lies in how God can take an imperfect vessel, Jackson, and use him to live out Love in a relationship with Mackenzie.

Amidst the seriousness of this plot, plenty of moments of fun, humor, and family make for joyful moments. I LOVED the times when Jackson was interacting with his brothers — their playful side, and their complex relationships. His whole family is fun! Smoothies and a winter coat have a special role in the story, too, as well as a hilarious “questionable” spare bedroom at Jackson’s parents’ house, the iconic Bob Ross, and an “I Love Lucy” reference that had me LOL-ing.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy. This is my honest review.

My preparation for immersing myself in a Jennifer Rodewald novel is always the same. Time. Tissues. Peace and quiet. Check, check, check!

That preparation came in handy as Jen serves up another wonderfully redemptive story, when two strangers lose their minds momentarily and find themselves living with the complicated consequences of their foolish choices. As Jackson and Mackenzie’s stories unfold, how my heart ached for them and the circumstances that caused both their strengths and their vulnerabilities. There are some beautiful moments in this book, especially when Jackson steps up and follows God’s still small voice.

In Spite of Ourselves is an engaging and emotional read, and the way this couple grow as individuals as they draw closer together, despite their ignominious beginning, is beautiful. The Murphy Brothers have captured my heart and I’m excited for more to come.

I love faith filled stories like this of imperfect people experiencing the perfect and boundless love of God.
Mackenzie had it rough, with her mum and upbringing. Mistakes led her to be with Jackson but God turned enabling her to experience His truth and love.
I admired Jackson's love and sacrifice even when it was thrown in his face. I loved how he persevered through the ridicule of his childhood and how bad situations never made him bitter only determined to be a better man and love more. I loved how his lifestyle influenced Mackenzie for good.

Beautiful, heart warming, tear jerking story of unconditionally love.

In spite of ourselves we are loved unconditionally.

First, let me say this. I want to spend Christmas, or any holiday really, with the Murphy family. They are just a fun bunch!! Everytime the brothers were together I laughed, and kind of like Mackenzie, felt like perhaps I belonged there. And frankly, I never wanted to leave.

Rodewald had my complete attention with her Hallmarky "let's pretend we really love each other" storyline right from the beginning. Yes, I could see this story unfold vividly in my mind, and I'm sure Hallmark wouldn't even do it justice. Jackson and Mackenzie had such great chemistry - oh wow the kissing scenes had me swooning! But it was more then just their attraction. Over the time they spent together, they just developed a real bond, one that I knew would be hard to get rid of.

Then the ultimate shocker - which I won't say because of spoilers, and honestly I kind of expected it a little bit, but it was how the characters interacted after that, that really had me hooked to the story line. Tough decisions to be made for sure. I was a little angry with Mackenzie over this last probably third of the book as she seemed to go back and forth with how she "felt" about Jackson. Even so, it just made for a great storyline.

I always love the books that Rodewald brings, and I have to say this might be one of my favorites. It hit all the right contemporary "fake-romance" buttons and had me wanting more! I do hope we see these characters in the future :)

I've read a good string of 5-star Christian romances this year that got me in the heart. In Spite of Ourselves is one of them. I loved this unconventional romance - a marriage of inconvenience, I'll call it.

Apparently what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas and Jackson and Kenz (Mackenzie) are proof. Drunken strangers, married. Of course, the first thought is to get the marriage annulled and make it all go away. That's harder for Jackson than Kenz.

What follows is a sometimes funny, always heartfelt story of God writing straight with crooked lines - but Jennifer Rodewald uses a better metaphor in the form of a famous television painter. We often think we've so royally screwed things up that God can't -or won't - work with the mess we've made (or the mess created by our family of origin). But he does, as this story so aptly demonstrates.

Jackson is my favorite kind of hero, the kind that despite all his faults is a model of God's unfailing love. (I think that's where it gets me in the heart.)

Other things I loved: a large family of seven brothers and their antics and a working-class hero of modest means, even one with an imperfect face.

Now I have to go back and read the Murphy Brothers story I missed! (While craving an Orange Julius.)

What a beautiful, touching, emotional story of love and faith. This book also proved what happens in Vegas does not always stay in Vegas I cannot imagine Mackenzie's mom raising her the way she did and instilling her unrealistic beliefs on love, God, and men on Mackenzie.
I was so proud of Jackson, the man he was, and the man he would be, always for Mackenzie. I really liked his aha moment towards the end of the book. I especially liked his faith and that no matter what Kenz decided he would always love her.
This was also an interesting story about family. Jackson had six other boisterous brothers. He was the funny one or clown in his family. He was very close to Connor but he and Jackson butted heads and there seemed to be jealousy between them.
I liked how Jackson's mom developed a nice relationship with Kenz to make up for the one she lacked with her mom. I also liked the Bob Ross quote about mistakes and how it related so well to Jackson and Mackenzie's relationship. I am so glad I read this book! . I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

Good! I liked this one so much more than book one. The way the couples start in both books though is spectacular. In this case, spectacularly poor judgment, but definitely attention grabbing.

I loved Jackson. He's a good man who made a mistake. I love his forgiving and loving attitude and that he is a runner. I also loved that Jackson's mom Helen and Mackenzie connected.

Look forward to book three!

This is my first book by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style. Jackson and Mackenzie’s story is such an example of something bad being used for good. I laughed; I cried; I cheered them on. So thankful they had the support of Jackson’ loving, Christian parents behind them.

An overtly Christian story, with emotional tugs and sweet romance... a bit of snark and an homage to Bob Ross...

Great example of unconditional love.
Hard to imagine that God loves us even more than that... and with no doubts on His part.

The Murphy brothers are back and this time the spotlight is on the resident prankster. Jackson’s attempt at proving to his family he is an adult and more than the jokes he tells or the pranks he pulls backfires in a most colossal way.

Jennifer Rodewald once again delves into the nitty gritty of life, this time with the powerful message that God can take our biggest mistakes—the choices we made in our despair or anger without seeking God first—and turn them into blessings.

I loved Jackson and Mackenzie’s love story. It’s not traditional but it’s beautiful. Jackson steps up to care for his wife (even when he’s kind of blackmailing her to meet his family). He proves his maturity in his patience and persistence when Kenz isn’t sure about any of it. And Mackenzie’s journey is just a poignant as she discovers a love she never experienced—both through God and through Jackson.

There is a reason Rodewald sits at the top of my must-read authors list, and In Spite of Ourselves cements her place there. I can’t wait to see which brother gets himself into a fix next.

God makes all things beautiful in His time

I loved In Spite of Ourselves, a touching story of two people who had never felt they were good enough for their families and how they learned to set their eyes on the One to whom they always mattered.

Jackson Murphy is wonderful! Despite his mistake of getting so drunk he would marry a stranger, he was really a great guy. And you can't argue with me about that because I know. I read the story! And getting drunk wasn't his MO. It was so sweet the way he took responsibility for his actions. Granted, at first it was to hide his behavior from his parents. Then it was because it was the right thing to do. And, because this is a romance, eventually because of love.

Mackenzie was a little bristly. While I often take exception to characters like her and tend to not like them, however author Jennifer Rodewald showed so much of Mackenzie's heart and motivations, especially her fear, I was able to understand and empathize with her. The lies her mother had taught her had caused her to live in fear and loneliness. What a pleasure to watch her blossom under the kindness and love shown her by Jackson and his parents.

Spiritual lessons abound! I enjoyed the illustrations from Bob Ross' teachings and the way he would take what looks like a mess and make it beautiful and how Helen, Jackson's mom, shared from that how God makes the messes of our lives beautiful as well.

Witty repartee peppers In Spite of Ourselves, not making light of the situation and yet keeping it from getting too serious or deep. There was a great blend of seriousness and humor. Mackenzie's lack of pop culture knowledge resulted in some fun confusion as well.

This is a deeply moving story. It stands alone and yet the crazy Murphy Brothers and their parents are in it as well. You certainly don't have to read the entire series to enjoy it but then again, why wouldn't you?

In Spite of Ourselves is a classic case of all things work together for our good.

Jackson is a model case of the middle child that uses humour cover deeper isues in his life. Living up to expectations and a heart break he lives with constantly as a sister in law to a druken night that had him married in Vegas to a girl he just met.

Mackenzie tired of a predetermine life her mum already planned, decided to let loose for once and that lands her a married woman to a man that she just met, how random can that get and wow! how deeply disappointed her mother will be after feeding her with the dos and dont of an independent life.

While they want this "mistake" dissolved Jackson needs Mackenzie to spend a week ith him and the dissolution will be final, but life happens an amazing weekend , no dissolution of the marriage and then bam! a baby is added.

Another classic case of Man proposes, God Disposes.

Jackson rises to the responsibility and love wins.

I loved this book so much because it shone the love of God, the light of forgivness, the love of family and when God's hand is in a matter, it would be alright in the end.

I got this book for free and this is my honest opinion and I recommend this book 100%

Mackenzie was raised to be independent. She doesn't need a man. A man will only use you and hurt you. Jackson has always been the jokester and none of his family takes him seriously. He just wants to prove that he's more than a prankster.

Jackson didn't finish his marathon in enough time to qualify for the Boston marathon. Mackenzie didn't pass her MCAT exam to get in to medical school. They are both disappointed and don't know what the future holds when they meet at a club in Las Vegas. They both get carried away with too much to drink and before then night is over they are married. Jackson wants to try and make the marriage work. Mackenzie never planned to marry and wants out.

This book reminds me of a modern day re-telling of Hosea from the Bible. Not that Mackenzie is a prostitute, but in the way Jackson keeps pursuing her and loving her no matter what. She continually pushes him away because she is afraid of how she feels and of getting hurt. Jackson keeps showing her love in action even before the feelings for her are there. He reflects Jesus in his actions. I love this! I rarely give a 5 star review, but this book deserves it. I totally recommend it. This is a sweet/clean book.

This book starts out with a storyline that's been done many times before where a guy and a girl get drunk and don't remember getting married in Vegas. They both want to forget it happened, but he emailed his brother a video of it and now his mom is asking to meet his wife. Complications arise and they can't so easily get out of their marriage. Mackenzie came off as cold at times and kept trying to shut Jackson out even though he was helping her out financially and he had right to be involved. He could be juvenile at times making a joke out of most things, but maybe that's part of being a stand up comedian. Her mom was a piece of work, but his family especially his mom was mostly warm and welcoming. There was a lot of drama and misunderstandings and their early 20s ages could have been part of reason for their immaturity at times.

Oh my! Jackson and Mackenzie are my favourite fiction couple! From an unimpressive, drunken mistake to the redeeming power of love and acceptance, this book moved me. I love the Murphy family and this author is someone whom I automatically buy before even reading the plot of the book. Yes, her books are that good. However, this is my favourite to date. The prankster of the Murphy family meets his match in Mackenzie. As well as being an extremely satisfying romance, the theme of restoration with God and acceptance of His love was powerful. Kind of lost for words having finished it and am at that stage of wishing I still had the whole book to read again for the first time. Although I definitely plan to read it a second and possibly third time...

In Spite of Ourselves was another faith-filled masterpiece from an author I can always count on. Jennifer Rodewald never disappoints. I look forward to new books from her with great anticipation and I absolutely loved this one.

There were quite a few distractions that kept pulling me away from this book, but it was constantly on my mind. When I was able to actually sit down and read, it had my undivided attention. I really loved how it showed God's hand in everything. How He can make good from the bad and turn a mess into a masterpiece.

Jackson was such a lovable leading man. So fun, sweet, and swoonworthy. He's good at getting laughs, but wasn't taken as seriously as he wished he was. Sometimes I just wanted to reach through the pages and give him a hug.

I didn't know what to think of Mackenzie at first but once she started opening up and I got to know her, I could understand where she was coming from and I ended up really liking her. She had a different kind of upbringing from the norm, so that really affected the way she viewed certain things. It was nice watching her experience, and enjoy, new things. It wasn't an easy process for her, but it was well worth it in the end.

If you're a fan of contemporary romance, I highly recommend this book. Even if you haven't read the first one in the series, this one stands alone just fine. But if you do get a chance, check out Always You. It's a hilariously good time!

Just finished this gem of a book. Deeply satisfying, with many fun and profound moments. I love the heart of this author's writing. Her characters have depth and reality, and there is always a worthwhile takeaway. I adored Jackson. What a perfect, broken, courageously submissive hero. I enjoyed Mackenzie's journey. It was a beautiful love story. Two love stories. Brought me to tears. With so many Christian novels, it seems Jesus is an add-on. Not with this author. Jesus is the fabric in which the sometimes messy characters are woven through. While the stories are fictitious, what lies beneath remains and resonates long after you're finished reading. Good stuff.
