Initially, I had planned to read a horror book for Halloween, and I realized very soon that I was reading a horror book indeed. It’s just that it was way too much horror for my taste … This book gives a very detailed overview (with statistically and critically evaluated sources) of the reasons why women and members of other marginalized groups are angry. And there are many of them! But, spoiler alert, all of the reasons have to do with the society we live in, that is, the patriarchal structures that we are subject to. Men hold a dominant position over women and most of them have no interest in changing this situation that enables men to decide what will happen to women and girls. Male members of our society can easily ignore, dismiss, mock, wrong, oppress, intimidate, bully, hurt, rape, torture, maim and even kill the female members. With severe consequences for people everywhere. No wonder that women are furious! The author does not only show why, but she also points out how they deal with their rage, completed with many examples from her own experience. I had already called myself a feminist before, but this book helped me learn a lot of new things – very distressing, shocking and infuriating information, a lot of it about (often intersectional) discrimination. The good thing is that Soraya Chemaly also shows us ways to deal with our rage in a constructive way. I noticed that a few things are lacking in the book, but nevertheless, it's an impressive, powerful feminist manifesto, which had the power to enrage me deeply. 4.5 stars.
