Defender: In the Days of the Judges Chronicles of Israel Book 3

Rate this book
Deborah, the mother in Israel who went to war. Gideon, the mighty warrior with a valiant army of only 300 men. Ruth, the young Moabitess who left everything she loved to settle in a new land. Samson, the strong man with a fatal weakness.

It was the time of the Judges. Israel had settled in Canaan but quickly forgot the God that had brought them there. The Hebrews flirted with other gods and each man did what was right in his own eyes. Time and again they were conquered by other nations and knew suffering once more. Yet there was one who witnessed their pain and rose up to be their champion…

3rd in a series of 3 books chronicling the history ofbthe Hebrews starting withbthe Exodus from Egypt, through the conquest of the Promised Land, through the era of the Judges.
This is an easy reading level book suitable for thise learning English and for those increas8ng theor reading skills. The Scriotures quoted are likewise an easy to read version but accurate.
Israel doesn't finish her conquest of Canaan after Joshua dies. Glad to be settled, they start socializing with oagan neighbors, and rather than leading them to learn about God, instead allow themselves to be led astray into pagan worship.
They had made promises to each other and Joshua. They would be faithful to God, realizing that their security rested only in His protection. Their devotion to God leaves too many of them. Eventually they also remember that God had said if they sinned, but repented and asked God for His help, God had promised to rescue them. So begins an era of vascillation spiritually. The stories are excellent summaries of each judge's tome in God's service to Israel. Included is the beautiful story of Ruth and Naomi.
For a new believer who is becoming more acquainted with Jesus and would like to explore the Jewish roots of Christianity, this is an excellent way to do so.
The simpler version also contains some excellent insights into the behaviors of various characters, including that of the story of Samson.
This author has many other books sumilar to this that go through various subjects. Even if, like me, you don't need easy reading levels, the insights you can glean from a simplified version of the story are always welcome. It also gives those who want to use historical fiction as a means to help someone understand the Bible better something that we can recommend.
While in my reviews of the other 2 books in this series I had not thought to mention it, there is another category of reader who may find this useful, that is a younger but more advanced reader for whom the concepts of some scriptures may be a bit too intense but who are beyond basic children's Bibles and books.
