Spirits Among Us by Sherry Howard is a poignant story of 12-year-old Scooter who dealing with her mother’s death. The accident which took her mother’s life, left Scooter wheelchair-bound. Scooter is desperate to reach her mother’s spirit in the small town her family has lived in for generations. In this powerful and emotional story, we are pulled into Scooter’s life, her family and friendships. I was drawn to the characters of Scooter and Harlan. Their loyalty and friendship was compelling. On top of the themes of grief, family and friendship, is the added mystery that keeps the reader on tenterhooks throughout. A profoundly moving story with themes of love, loss, family, friendships and small town, close-knit community. It was a very cozy and moving read that I could not put down until I finished the book. And there’s paintball too!

A quick and easy read that deals with heavy topics in an appropriate way for upper elementary students. Kids won’t find this spooky, but it could definitely be a great read for students dealing with grief or loss. The main character experiences a big life change before the novel starts and she uses a wheelchair in the novel. Her best friend is kind and supportive, and also dealing with an abusive father—although we don’t get much information or background on this. I would recommend this to students who have experienced a loss or a major life change and may need help coping. Overall I was eager to figure out the mystery of the book and found it enjoyable.
