She’s a baker without a kitchen. He’s got a double oven to spare. It’s a recipe for success, until his mother starts stirring up trouble …
Cassie Jordan has a sweet dream to open a bakery specializing in wedding cakes. The problem is, the Airstream trailer where she lives has a kitchen the size of a postage stamp, and her job as housekeeper for a vacation rental agency doesn’t pay enough for her to find other arrangements.
When the renters at one of the houses in her care cancel their stay, leaving the house empty and its top-of-the-line kitchen unused, who could blame her for seeing it as an opportunity? But Cassie’s unsavory plan starts to look like a mistake when the owner’s son shows up unannounced, catching her with her pants down—literally.
If Cassie can sweet-talk her way out of trouble, setting up her business might be a piece of cake. If not, it’s going to be a bitter setback …
The Icing on the Cake is a stand-alone novel in Linda Seed’s Otter Bluff small-town romance series.
I write funny, sexy contemporary romances full of friendship and family. My books are set in Cambria, a small town on Central California’s rugged, breathtaking coastline. At a time when close personal relationships are increasingly hard to find, I aim to write a better world full of the kind of love, loyalty, and companionship that we all long for. This was a sweet enough story, and had some fun and good parts to it. I liked the whole premise to the story. There were a lot of good side characters, and overall Cassie and Brian were a lot of fun as well. The story followed a good pace, and had several fun unexpected bits, while also having some predictable parts as well. I personally prefer my romances to give me all the steamy bits, but this was one that basically faded to black as the bedroom scenes began. And I know some people do prefer that, so they will probably find that a positive for this one and it may be more up their alley. I’m sure it is because of this being a bit more sweet than steamy that it also moved kind of slow for me. There was a lot of back and forth for the main characters, meaning a lot of the same thoughts over and over and repeated chapter after chapter. And that got a bit old for me. I also was very mad at Brian at the end for not realizing that something he had told everyone earlier was what was happening and then getting mad at people when they tried to point it out to him. Also being in 3rd person bugged me a bit. Like I really don’t necessarily understand why we needed two separate narrators the way it was done. What amuses me though, is you know how you put a face to a voice, or at least I do? The male narrator’s voice reminded me of an older balding guy, kinda skinny, nerdy, etc. As you can see from the picture of him below, that’s not him. But his voice didn’t really work that great for me. He read the story really well, and did great with all of that, I just didn’t see a guy like what is on the cover of the book from how he sounds. Also, the copy I got was through SoundCloud and I could not get it downloaded to the app on my phone. So since I mostly listen to audiobooks in my car, I had to pull up the website from my phone before I drove anywhere just to get it to play. But that isn’t an issue with the story or anything, just could have affected my mood when listening. I also couldn’t figure out how to speed up the narration, which I rarely do, but I could probably have done that with this book and it might have helped.
In conclusion, definitely a cute story, and if you prefer the fade to black, sweet romance, I would definitely say to give this one a try!
The start was kind of cute then the twist happened and every inch of feeling I had for his punk dumbass went right out the window. Here's the thing he knew. He knew and pretended he didn't because he got scared of commitment. That's not okay and should have been addressed. And then to coddle him, what kind of fuckery is this. First, I need you to tell me the reader that when life kicks them in the teeth that he won't run and leave her holding the bag. Because honey, we have all had men just say nope and leave us with way too much on our plates. I hope to God none of us reward those men by saying, "oh you poor man child it's okay." Cause it AIN'T. Man/woman/or other if you are going to be in someone's life at no point is it okay to bolt and then expect them to take you back. And all his protests, all his well meaning friends tell me the reader that he is aware that that was what he did. The red head should have made his move when she was crying. And poor man baby should have come back to see her kissing the man who is going to stand by her the rest of her life. Cause go with the honest arsehole rather than the cream puff. You'll always know where you stand and they rarely crumble unlike man baby who never grew the hell up. Lots of people have toxic mommies Linda, most of them move on. Formal invite to all the kids of toxic moms, mommy don't love you, she can get bent, I'm your mommy now. Do the dishes, don't drink and drive, and don't let toxic people control your life. Cut em out, shut em down, and live your best life. And here's the truth about Cassie, she'll have her perfect life until she realizes she's the one that has to do all the heavy lifting. He will resent every burden she ever places on him, because that's just who he is. And Heaven forbid one of the kids get really sick because it'll be too much and there he goes again. He's there for the fun stuff, but life ain't all rainbows and sunshine. Sometimes, hopefully very rarely, life is the worst thing that ever happened to you. And you'll want someone to be right there keeping all your raggedy pieces together, not someone who will leave you to blow away on the wind.
I enjoyed the book for the most part but the last 8 chapters felt like it was dragging on. The end was what I expected but a little lack-luster. I was also looking forward to some kind of resolution with Lisa but it never really happened.

HOW. HOWWWW does this have a high rating? This book has to be hands down one of the worst I’ve read. Sorry to the author if you’re reading this.. but oh man. It was cringe cheesy from chapter one. I read about half and can’t do it anymore. The conversations, especially between the kids and their parents about their sex life is so cringy and disturbing.
The way each paragraph and section ends is also painful. I found myself rolling my eyes everytime thinking this isn’t even clever, it’s just annoying. I’m so glad to finally commit to stopping early and not finishing. Best decision I’ve made in a while.
This was an okay read. It started out stronger for me, but it felt a bit long and it seemed to change tone and direction a little over halfway through. Cassie was a good character, and I liked her ambition and drive. Her dream to open a bakery, and the work she did in order to realize her dream was fun to read about. Brian started okay for me, but by the end I found him annoying. He had a lot of little comments that just didn’t sit right with me. And I disliked the way he tried to rationalize his relationship with Cassie. He didn’t take responsibility for his actions, and he was an idiot with his mom. One moment he was warning Cassie about her angles, and the next he was his mom’s supporter and he wouldn’t hear a bad word about her. He just didn’t feel realistic or make a lot of sense. The relationship between Cassie and Brian was okay. It started out with fun and kinda flirty banter, and they had good chemistry. This was a fade-to-black, closed-door romance. After trouble in their relationship, I disliked how quickly and easily Cassie and Brian made up with little discussion about what had hurt them and their relationship.
What a lovely little romance! Free on Kobo so I didn't expect the world but I loved the characters, loved the set-up and became invested in the hoped for happy ending. Read it in a day and would definitely read more by this author.

"The Icing on the Cake An Otter Buff Romance" by Linda Seed. This is a story about Cassie Jordan & Brian Cavanaugh. Cassie is a housekeeper for a Rental Property Company who wants to one day own her own Bakery. When she gets a offer to make a wedding cake for her sisters friend, she needs a kitchen big enough and her small kitchen in her trailer won't do. So she decides to use one of the rental house's kitchen that she cleans to do the baking as no one is staying at that property for the month. When so goes to the house to use the kitchen she feels like a dirty mess from cleaning so she decides to use the shower. As she is walking out of the bathroom in a towel in walks the owner of the house's son Brian. Instead of turning her in to the management company he allows her the use of the kitchen . Brian is a youtube star and is staying at his mother rental while repairs are being done at his home. Brian allow her to bake the wedding cake and goes to the wedding with her, as her plus one. From that wedding she get another order. Cassie ask Brian for the use of the kitchen again. An idea forms in Brian about making a YouTube video about cake decorating. They do the Video together and Cassie starts getting more orders. Problems arises when Brian mother comes to visit. She decides she wants to back Cassie with her Bakery but only if she moves to closer to her, this way her son will follow. Will his mother tear them apart? Will Brian see that she is manipulating him? Read "The Icing on the Cake" you won't be able to put it down.. I received an advance copy of the book for my honest review and can't wait for the next in the series. Enjoy I certainly did!
It was fairly clean - you get the description of a few kisses, but the sex scenes are not on page.
I enjoyed Cassie and Brian's characters and the chemistry between them. I was fully on board with everything until right at the end of the story. I hate it when stories rely on a conflict that means one character has to be completely obtuse for it to continue. Brian was able to spot his mother's manipulation from a mile away when it came to her plan with Cassie and the bakery, but when she starts manipulating him he is blind to it.
I can understand that to some extent, but when the reader can see what's going on (from the descriptions of their interactions), the character's best friend and his wife can see what's happening - and tell him - and his girlfriend not only tells him, but breaks up with him because of it... Well, I just don't buy it. Brian had zero trust for his mum in the beginning of the book, and she showed herself to be worthy of that lack of trust. It seemed more like a plot convenience that he was suddenly deceived by her in the end.
It made him seem like a moron.
It would have been more interesting if Lisa actually had been sick, and watching him deal with that reality and try to juggle his relationship with Cassie.
That being said, I like cake, and I like romance, and I like cake fail videos. I thought this was a fun read.
So I was bored one night, in the mood to read something soft and fluffy, so I started scrawling through the top free books on Apple's ebook store, saw this one, and figured 'eh, looks cute'. Read the sample, liked it, downloaded it, read it in an hour or two.
This is not what I normally read. At all. As in, my tastes run toward Adult High Fantasy novels, preferably with romance as a subplot at best, with complex magic systems and worldbuilding and dragons and such.
So this was a bit different for me. And you know what? It was cute. It was what I was looking for: fluffy, cutesy, and just enough like a standard romcom to keep me entertained. The characters were charming, the situations cute, and the leads had decent chemistry.
What I DIDN'T expect, (and what threw me off a bit), was that the love interest felt like he was inspired by a...certain YouTuber.
I can't confirm, of course. I have no idea what the author's intent was...but was I the only one getting STRONG Rhett and Link vibes from the YouTube channel described, and the friendship between Brian and Ike? Like, a weird alternate universe where Rhett and Link broke up, Rhett went off to become a lawyer and Link went on to become the romantic interest in a romcom? No? Just me, then?
Yeah, that threw me off a bit, but in the end it was easy to just laugh off and carry on (though it was a bit distracting at times...)
Anyway, yeah. Cute little fluff read, neat to check out things outside my regular comfort zone.
I am an unabashed fan of Linda’s having read all of her books starting with Moonstone Beach. My favorite place in the world to escape is the CA Central Coast, and Linda captures the beauty and small town feel perfectly. Now, with The Icing on the Cake, I got to revisit Cambria while getting to know Cassie and Brian, two characters that appeared in two of Linda’s other series (Main Street Merchants and The Russo Sisters -- but yes, this book definitely stands alone). It was also fun to “meet up” with other characters as well – a great reunion of sorts during a time when we can’t travel. From the first page, I was hooked on sweet Cassie, who has dreams of opening up her own bakery, and nerdy, but adorable Brian, who’s met with YouTube success, but is still looking for his next true passion. I LOVE Linda’s way with dialogue – it’s witty, real, and touching, and her characters are multi-dimensional. The story is a “fade to black” romance, so you’ll definitely get to feel their chemistry (and use your imagination) while the story continues to flow. Great characters, great laughs, great love: a true recipe for a HEA!
More of a modern, business start-up story than romance
While this story is about the romance between two very nice people, the main take-away is how to start your own business, with online marketing tips, and how to navigate garnering financial support. It’s also a reminder to establish healthy boundaries when there are people in your life who struggle with mental illness. (There’s a secondary character with narcissism.) Overall the book reads like a glimpse into the lives of real people who have great senses of humor, kind hearts, solid relationships with friends/siblings, and real feelings and human reactions. This could be a plus or a detraction. If folks want to escape from reality, this book may seem way too domestic. If readers want a highly believable story set in modern times, this one fits the bill.
The characters are well developed, and even the dog interactions are accurate. There’s humor, some minor drama, references to sex, no graphic sex scenes, some beer drinking, and some references to family dysfunction/abandonment.
I’ve had this book in my TBR list for the longest, but I’m so glad that I finally took the time to read it. This story was full of love, family problems, determination, and dreams coming true. Brian is a young man making his living doing YouTube videos. He was abandoned, at and early age, by his mother, and has never had a good relationship with her as an adult. He thought that she had changed, but he realized that she was attempting to manipulate his adult life. Cassie is a young woman,on the verge of fulfilling her dreams. She works hard cleaning rental houses, while hoping to find a way to open a bakery. When Brian and Cassie first meet, she is just attempting her career. They begin a relationship, but Brian’s mother, attempts to break it up, without success. Eventually Cassie obtains her dream of a bakery, and both Brian and Cassie finally reach their HEA. I really enjoyed this book by Linda Seed, and plan to read more books written by her, and recommend this book.
Cassie works for a vacation rental place doing maintenance, cleaning as well as office work. What she really wants to do is make wedding cakes but she doesn't have a license or even a kitchen. She lives in an Airstream trailer on her parents property. Brian is trying to figure out what's next with his career and redoing his home when he has to move out because of a mold and termite issue and moves into his mothers rental home for a few weeks. Happens to be the same house that Cassie is borrowing the kitchen to do the wedding cake that is going to help her make a name for herself. What follows is full of laughs as these two get to know each other, have some family interference as well as support on Cassie's side and a bit of disappointment as they work toward their HEA. Such a fun and quick read, just what I needed with everything that's going on in the world! Highly recommend Ms. Seed's books, she never disappoints. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my review.
4.75 ★⎮The Icing on the Cake was the cutest audiobook I've heard in a long while. I don't frequent the Romance genre, but when I do, it's in hopes of finding something like this.
This was a sweet and pretty clean story with an adorable premise. When I finished it, I immediately began looking for the second installment, before realizing that it hasn't been released yet. I will definitely be continuing on with this series as soon as possible and I'll be looking into Linda Seed’s other title as well.
The dual narration for The Icing on the Cake was superbly done. I've never heard anything from Avie Paige or Travis Baldree before, but I do hope to hear more of them in the future. Their voices complemented each other nicely and they were each able to smoothly handle voicing the opposite gender. If you're interested in this book, I strongly recommend the audiobook. You won't be disappointed! I listened on Scribd.
This book is absolutely terrific, worth at least 8 stars. Everything about it is great. First, I love characters who are ordinary people, not billionaires or CEOs. Second, I love extraordinary characters, people with quirks and foibles besides broken hearts, secret children, PTSD or vindictive, crazy exlovers. Cassie and Brian are wonderful--quirky, extraordinary ordinary folks who have to struggle through the trainwrecks of their lives to find true love. People who have to admit their imperfections to themselves and their significant others. I laughed with them and cried with them and was sorry to have to say goodbye when the book ended. Oh, and BTW, I loved the tasteful way the author let us know how much they enjoyed each other without cheapening it by being graphic. This goes on my "read again" list for sure.
The Icing on the Cake - Otter Bluff bk1 by Linda Seed Linda has only gone and done it again, what a fabulous start to a brand new series. Linda continuously writes such quality pieces of work. This new series is Cassie & Brian's story, we met both of these in two different series, Cassie the younger sister of Lacy, who we met back in Fire & Glass-Main Street Merchants and Brian, Ike's YouTube partner in The Russo Sisters. I love how Linda can bring together characters from two different series to make a new one, is truly exceptional. Perfectly written, unique, full of wonderfulness., and it works:) Right from the very beginning of The Icing on the Cake, you are transported back to Cambria , where you feel at home, feel part of the family. This has a very strong plot, with other characters from the previous books coming back into life,(totally loved this), emotional romance, to me Cassie and Brian sizzled, making it a gripping story that will have you glued to the end. A guaranteed must-read, which has you hoping Cassie & Brian to get their HEA. I was offered this book in the provision of providing my own honest view., and this is it. It also has a gorgeous book cover too. I definitely recommend this book and can not wait for the next in the series. Thank you, Linda.
When you start out laughing while reading a book, you know you are in for a good time!! “The Icing on The Cake” by Linda Seed is all that and more!! My only complaint is that I need the recipe for the champagne cake and a slice of the cake wouldn’t hurt!! Cassie is such a well written character that I feel I know her and would recognize her when visiting Cambria!! This is a great stand alone book, but I also love that previous characters from other stories are mentioned, it is like visiting old friends to check in!! This book is exactly what I look for when I have a couple of hours for myself, a story well written, characters that are believable, laughter and love!!! So grab a drink, crack open “The Icing on The Cake” and relax!!
Cassie and Brian meet at the rental house of Brian's mother. Cassie is making there her cake for a wedding couse she does not have a proper kitchen. So she use kitchens at the houses she cleans. She ia lucky to meet Brian who understands her needs. He gives her the kitchen to start her bussines she always dreamed. And soon they become an ithem. The things goes well till his mother goes too closed. And then the love in on a trial.
My thoughts: it was a nice romantic read. The carachters were real and belivable. I missed more romatic involvment but other situations were really nice presented. I admired both the main carracters and belive in them. I think I could be the assistent of Cassie and live there, it seems magic.
I received this audio copy on audiobookworm promotions as a tour. I am gratful for this opportunity.
I liked the start of this book, the baking misunderstanding was unique and fun. I also liked that it wasn’t an insta love situation. However, after the first few chapters, it stopped being enjoyable. There’s something about the dialogue and the way the characters are written that’s juvenile, they acted naïve and younger than their age.
The story also dragged on for too long and the plot with Lisa became ridiculous. It felt like it was thrown in there just to create drama and conflict between Brian & Cassie, it didn’t make sense that Brian would be so easily manipulated after everything his mom did before. I would’ve enjoyed the book more if it progressed in a different way.

This is the first book in the Otter Bluff Series. I like the cover. Cassie and Brian's story is a funny, and sweet romance. Cassie is lovely, strong, and independent. Brian is enigmatic, and a little self centered. Brian's mother is such a selfish, and manipulative person! The storyline is interesting, slow paced, filled with family drama, angst, twists and turns, and romance. Avie Paige and Travis Baldree did a good job with the narration. Looking forward to listening to more in the Series. I received this audiobook at no-cost from Audiobook Empire. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
I love how Linda Seed has all of her series set in Cambria, California. It feels good to be reintroduced to characters from previous well-loved series. This first book in the Otter Bluff series picks up with YouTube sensation Brian (from Loving Benny) meeting professional-to-be baker Cassie (Lacy’s [from Fire and Glass] sister). The relationship between these two had me laughing out loud and crying as I cheered for Cassie to achieve her goals.

I loved reading Cassie’s and Brian’s story. Cassie with her wedding cake business was my favorite. She never gave up reaching for her goal, and the detail used to describe her decorating was so interesting. Brian, a YouTube star, had issues to work through with his mother. She was a real piece of work. This book was the perfect follow up to “Loving Benny”, which introduced us to Brian. I was happy to see the characters from that book show up in The Icing on the Cake. I love Linda Seed’s novels and can’t wait for the next one!
Cassie is a good strong character who loves with her whole heart. Brian had a terrible childhood with his mother leaving him when he was a child. Lisa was a master manipulator and truly impacted Brian’s character. He is more concerned with his pride and sense of humiliation than he is about his girlfriend. He never truly apologizes for this. I feel that he needed to do this. She is a good woman and deserves more. The beginning of the story was good but it just was blah at the end. Disappointing.
Meh. It was OK. It started out pretty good and I was totally engaged but that changed about halfway through. The pace slowed down considerably and it became almost downright boring. I had hopes for this one. You have the abandoned in childhood and insecure guy, narcissistic and manipulative mother, youngest daughter almost still living at home with a dream and lots of determination with her own insecurities and a bit of narcissism, too. Sounds like an interesting combination with lots of possibilities, right? I thought so too. Unfortunately, it just didn't really play out that well.
This story was so much fun and hilariously entertaining. I have to say there were a couple things I tried to predict and got it wrong so I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the chemistry between them as well as the family drama. The narration was absolutely brilliant. Both Avie Paige & Travis Baldree did a fantastic job bringing these fun & snarky characters to life. I loved every minute of it. I highly recommend this book!
Caught where she wasn't supposed to by a guy she social media followed... Found a pretty lady that he certainly wasn't sure what to decide on....
This is a story of dealing with an over bearing mom, dreams of a bakery and finding success on your own terms while navigating romance.
I liked this story, had some good chemistry, and had to work out different challenges. The writing style isn't my favorite but it the plot kept me reading on.
Awesome beginning to a new series in the sweet town of Otter Bluff. The angst felt between this couple was heart felt and played right onto the dysfunctional mother. Was nice to see a lady stand her ground and then accept the change wrought without a "I told you so". ❤❤❤ I volunteered an honest opinion for this book.
