Sorrow & Song #2

Great Waters

Rate this book
Haunted by the tragedies and mistakes of his past, Russell Carver has nonetheless managed to build a successful—if lonely—life for himself in his native Boston. But when he meets lovely, vivacious Katie Sweet, up from Atlanta to visit her grandmother, Russell’s stoic life is turned upside down and long-abandoned dreams are reawakened. Russell will do anything to protect and provide for this woman he adores, but neither of them can imagine the great waters of calamity that will soon rush against them and shake their fledgling relationship to its very foundation.

Set against the backdrop of the final years of the Roaring Twenties and the beginning of the Great Depression, Great Waters is a stand-alone sequel to Some Through the Fire.

Can Russell and Katie’s love survive through the family conflicts, heart-wrenching losses, and dark secrets that threaten to drown them both?

‼️RTC but for now — I adored this book and highly recommend. I think it’s my favorite out of all of hers. But for my YA and younger reader friends there is a warning in the beginning of this book that there is content that is not suitable for younger readers as this book centers around a married couple and a lot of other heavy topics addressed. It’s PG but I wouldn’t recommend for the younger audience. So just keep that in mind. I always like to give warnings because I care — your innocence should be valued and protected. ❤️

I liked the characters and this story has tons of action. This book had a lot of good messages, but it really turned into a rough read. Think Jocelyn Green rough- on steroids. There was a content warning at the beginning that this book includes mentions of marital (physical) relationships. That was fine. I didn't have any problems with the way marital relationships were handled. However, it had a significant amount of truly traumatizing events, one after another after another. It was really way too much for me. Miscarriages, abusive marriages, infidelity, suicide, murder, medical abuse, child abuse... the book just kept going and going. 😳 I thought by about the 50% mark we'd covered enough trauma for a book. While I don't mind some real life in my books, this one went way too far for what I can handle.
Thanks, Jennifer, for your thorough research and all the history in your books. This one is set during the Great Depression and the medical history in particular is fascinating and so sad!

Great Waters is the second book in the Sorrow and Song series and it did not disappoint. I was so excited when I realized that book two was going to be about Russell. I enjoyed his character in book one and it's nice to see his redemption arc. This book is set right before and then during the Great Depression, which was interesting to read as there aren't that many fictional books set in this time period.

Now, if you read the first book, then you know that this author does not shy from speaking about hard topics and breathing Truth into her books. This book had a content warning at the beginning that it is not suitable for YA and I definitely agree. There are some really hard topics within this book: marital abuse, loss of child, beatings, suicide, etc. However, the author handles them so gracefully and is constantly pointing the characters (as well as the reader!) back to the Cross and Christ.

The author also has a way of weaving in light-hearted moments that are just so delightfully sweet and uplifting after all the heaviness.

5 stars and I can't wait to read the third book!

ETA: I think my favorite thing about this book is that it deals with married couples and how they must stretch, grow, and change together. Very few books show you life after the HEA. As a married women, I truly appreciated seeing the married couples struggling through some really hard trials...and having to learn that they must put their faith, hope, and trust in Christ because He is the only One who will ever fully satisfy them.

WONDERFUL

I enjoyed everything about this book. It had me hooked from the very beginning until the very end. Unfortunately I have the first book but did not realize it. I plan on reading it and then go on and read book 3. I can't say enough about this book, and hope others enjoy it as much as I did. A huge "thank you" to the author for a most enjoyable read.

Emotionally Gripping Sequel!

It’s hard to put into words the various emotions this book made me feel. As referenced in the Author’s Notes at the back of the book, this is a book about marriage and life after the wedding takes place. Although a fictional story, the issues faced by the couples are very real, gritty, and heart wrenching at times. Characters struggle with doubt, faith, confidence, trust, insecurity and fear. Yet woven throughout this inspirational novel are messages of hope, forgiveness, and second chances, and the message that past mistakes don’t have to define you.

Although this book can be read as a standalone since sufficient background information is provided, I am glad I read the first book in the series, Some Through the Fire, before this one as it gave a detailed backdrop to the characters’ lives in this novel. It is clear from reading the book how much research the author has put into the series. The historical details were so engrossing that I felt like I was taking a peek into another time period. Not only did this book contain twists and turns that kept me turning pages, it left me thinking about the characters and the lessons they learned well after I finished the book. If you haven’t read anything from this author yet and love Christian fiction that can tackle serious topics while at the same time being so uplifting, I highly recommend author Jennifer Q. Hunt!

Content Disclosure: There are brief mentions of rape and attempted suicide.

Update after re-reading: Still a high 5 stars! I loved this one even more the second time around!

Taking place during the last few years of the 1920's and into the Great Depression, this is a beautiful novel of not only what it means to fall in love, but how to stay in love and stay faithful when the rose-colored glasses come off and everything crumbles beneath you. I loved the raw, rich, and real emotions that Jennifer Q. Hunt shows in every aspect of her characters from the young love of our leads, Russell and Katie, to the more seasoned (but no less complex) marriages of their siblings and friends. There are some tough topics discussed including spousal abuse, depression, and pregnancy loss that are all handled with a tender understanding and grace. There were certainly times that this book brought me to tears, but thankfully there were many more instances, including the ending, which made me smile. I recommend this to all readers, especially those who are married. Even if you do not like historical fiction, the themes of this novel are worth considering.

This book was an excellent sequel and I was very much taken back in time. I could definitely see this story as a movie! It had action and romance and little bits of history here and there that really brought it to life!

Great Waters by Jennifer Q Hunt
Sorrow and Song Book 2

Wow! I loved this book so much. It is a masterful blend of tragedy and hope. The overarching story explores the depths of love in marriage, and the unconditional love of our Heavenly Father.

Multiple couples from the first book are central to this second book in the series, but the majority of the story focuses on Katie Sweet and Russell Carver. Katie is a young southern lady visiting her prestigious grandmother in Boston during the late 1920s when she meets and falls in love. Russell is a man with a checkered past that has fully experienced the redemption of Christ in his life, but still carries the heavy burden of shame. Russel and Katie’s
love story, as well as the stories of the family that surround them, creates a tapestry of love, heartache, and redemption that reflects the of love of Christ for us in all of our imperfection.

While this book is Christian fiction and does not contain any explicit scene, it does deal with difficult topics in very detailed manner. The author has a warning at the beginning of the book that it is not suitable for younger readers due to the nature of marital relationships and trigger warnings. So, please
keep that in mind.

I absolutely love this book and the characters. Both the strength of their faith and the weaknesses of their faith are so powerful and real. I cannot wait to read the next book.

There are so many great things I can say about this book.
For starters, I will say that this book is full of really deep and hard topics, but I love it all the better for it.
There is a note on the beginning page that says it isn't suitable for children and I would agree.
However, as an adult I adored this book. It was such a great sequel to Some Through the Fire. The relationships in this novel are sweet to the core, but some are damaging and this shows the result of that.
I adore these characters. And all the characters throughout the Sorrow and Song novels and this one was filled with all of them.
I read the 3rd novel in this series first, but I appreciate them all so much more now because I can see what they've been through.
This book is heart warming, heart breaking, and full of lessons that only God could teach someone.
Again, the author drew me in on the first page and started with enough action that immediately bonded me to these characters.
This book made me laugh, smile, and cry. I read this novel in 3 days and I'd read it again.
The characters in this Sorrow and Song trilogy will always have a special place on my bookshelf as well as in my heart.

This story was addictive from its naive start through the many waters that attempted to flood the characters. It was like a soap opera in a good way, compelling me to do more household chores so I could find out how they could possibly make it through each trial and come out triumphant by the grace of God in the end. Hunt’s unapologetic presentation of the trials and joys of marriage and seeking to find God in the midst of headache was both inspiring and frequently brought tears to my eyes.

I was completely unprepared for this book as the first book was sweet and paced well and realistic. This one took a whole new level of drama and heavy hard topics. It was written well and I do so love the characters but too much drama… one bad thing after another and some heart wrenching and stomach twisting. The sweet relationships was the only reason I stuck it out and the strong Christianity throughout redeemed it enough to see it through… I want to give it more stars as there are parts I did love and I probably won’t forget it but I can’t. This is just definitely not my type of book! Sigh…

"Great Waters" is the second book in the "Songs in the Night" series by Jennifer Q Hunt. Because this series follows the Sweet family, I do think that you need to read book one (Through the Fire) first to truly be able to follow and appreciate the characters. The books are definitely connected.
This book is set during the Roaring Twenties and Great Depression time period in the United States. Like the author's first book, this is not easy reading. Because of how the author chose the setting, the reader is introduced to various ways that the situations of the day affected various parts of the country. I felt like I understand this time period in a much more realistic way.
The characters definitely have some intense struggles. They would be good candidates for counseling - thankfully they do have others speaking truth into their lives. The unique circumstances lend themselves to a bit of mystery and suspense in one part.
What is more of the focus is marriage. Two different couples are really the main focus in this title. In the prelude, the author states that this book was written with adults in mind. As someone who has read plenty of "happily ever after" stories, I greatly appreciate the fact this book talks about the after.
This book is full of tough circumstances. Neither couple gets it all right. But the emphasis on fighting for marriage rather than giving up because times are tough.
The marriage bed is a struggle that both couples have at different times due to different reasons. I feel like the author handles the issues tastefully and circumspectly. While there are romantic elements, that is not the focus. Regardless this book is definitely not for younger readers.
Many of the plot points could be overwhelming. There are not easy fixes. But while this book may not be a happily ever after, it is a hopefully ever after title. Faith is the strongest element in this title. The characters continue to look to God for help. And when they forget or are too overwhelmed to do that, they have others standing in the gap on their behalf.
I read this book during a discouraging time in my own life. Reading about the troubling times was strangely comforting since I also felt like I was barely holding on. I am glad that the tough topics were not shied away from.
I am so glad that I read this book. Book three was definitely one that I wanted to read next. I have come to really appreciate this family and how they try to care for each other through it all.

The story of the Sweet family continues in this addition to the series. Russell and Katie are an unlikely match. Katie has been sheltered her entire life and Russell has experienced the darker side of life in ways that left permanent scars. When they married, they looked forward to a wonderful life, filled with prosperity, kids, and all the good things they had every dreamed. What followed was so far from the dream.

This book was intense from the first page to the last. Ms. Hunt writes with an emotional intensity that is as realistic as it is hard to experience. Katie and Russell wrestle with the unimaginable. They respond in human ways. But they aren't left to wallow. Even in the pit of despair, Russell and Katie learn to lean on each other, but ultimately on God. They find a new song that becomes their theme: "Great Is Thy Faithfulness."

Ms. Hunt writes with a deep understanding of the political and societal forces at work in the time period -- and even includes the slang of the time period. This is a perfect story to help us understand that time period.

I think what I love so much about Jennifer Q. Hunt's writing is that it is all so relatable. Nothing in her writing is outlandish or unrealistic. The situations her characters go through and the thoughts they have are all things that I would think, and situations that I see as "normal". She also write about hard-earned faith through everyday struggles. It's not also easy, often messy, but results in an even stronger faith in God and in the restorative power of Jesus's death and resurrection.

Like her other novels, Great Waters feels like you are right there with Katie, Russell, Cal, Billy, and Cornelia. This one was longer than the first novel in Sorrow & Song, but I was invested in how it would end and the pacing is fantastic. There are SO MANY layers in this novel that I want to read it a second time in the future.

A Beautiful Reminder of God’s Faithfulness in Life’s Deepest Trials

Wow, what a book!! As you walk through this story with the characters, you experience many moments that fill you with joy, along with many others that can make you weep for the kind of sorrows that have the capability to either break one’s faith or drive them deep into the arms of our loving, Sovereign God. I was constantly reminded that though these characters are fictional, the faithfulness of God is not, even as we experience our own seasons where it is hard to see His loving hand. The love story between Katie and Russell is captivating and so well-written! This book kept me on my toes all the way to its sweet and satisfying conclusion! 10/10, and bring your tissues!

First, let me say that every book I’ve read by Jennifer Q. Hunt has been an outstanding 5-star read. But this book blew me away. It was a roller coaster ride of joy and sorrow, happiness and sadness, depravied sin and glorious forgiveness. These characters have made a home in my head and heart. They are so real, with problems that face us all every day. Maybe not in the same ways, but still the same type of struggles.

“In life, we have to trust the path that God has us on. A lot of life doesn’t make sense, and sometimes we feel lost or it seems impossible to go on. But God sees what we can’t see yet.”

This book was amazing and had me hooked from the beginning, a must read for all Christian historical romance lovers!
Most books end with Happily Ever After, and this is where this one begins. Jennifer gracefully brings us through the highs and lows of married life, with the importance of leaning to embrace both with Christ at the center.
The struggles of financial hardships, child loss and child abuse are touched in the book, so I do recommend this for a mature audience, even though the scenes are all closed door.

I was a bit nervous about reading this 2nd book in the series, due to the subject matters mentioned in the synopsis.
Yes, there are tough subjects in this, and they are hard to read. I personally would have left out some things, or just glossed over them, but overall I did enjoy this book, it was 1 that I found hard to put down.
I like the fact that all the family are still included in this book, but it is mainly about Katie & Russel.
I read this via Kindle Unlimited.
Now onto the next book.

"Great Waters" is one of those unique stories that delves into the complexities of marriage after the 'happily ever after'. It celebrates the genuine contentment and joy that is to be found when Christ is at the center of a marriage, and what it means to choose love, to choose faith, and to choose hope each and every day. "Great Waters" is another wonderfully researched and historically rich novel by Jennifer Hunt - who has become a must-read author for me.

📱Not a book if you want a light read. It wasn’t explicit but not for young readers. It has a bit of a warning in the beginning. Trigger warnings: child loss/abuse, suicide, multitude of marriage issues, rape/marital rape, depression, PTSD, and child loss and medical abuse plus other types of abuse. I’m glad I read it just not a read if you’re trying to read a nice easy read novel. I appreciate the author tackling these tough issues .

This is the kind of book that ends with you letting out a happy sigh. Katie and Russell were a perfect-for-each-other couple, and I also enjoyed getting to read more of Billy and Cornelia (from book 1). This story is not without its sorrows, but the overarching theme is joy. It was a delight to read. I'm looking forward to getting book 3!

Love love love these books. As a Kansas City native, I especially loved the references to Kansas City back in the 30’s - and the crime! I don’t think a lot of people realize the history in Kansas City of mob crime but it’s quite fascinating! The story as a whole was inspiring and exciting. I love everything about the Sweet family. So excited to read the next one!

Jennifer Q Hunt does a fantastic job, once again, of weaving history into the second book of her family saga. I loved the focus on marriage and themes of commitment and forgiveness in the midst of the most difficult of times. It brought me to tears more than once and is a truly moving story with Godly truth that impacted and inspired my own faith. You don't want to miss this entire series!

Once or twice the timeline was choppy but everything else made me forget it until now. The trigger warning is certainly warranted; it deals with some pretty heavy and difficult things. However every situation was handled/written very well. I LOVED the focus on love and romance AFTER marriage. I would not consider it appropriate for most teens, while still being a clean and uplifting.

Another incredible story in this series. About midway to nearly the end I wasn’t sure about the crime ring storyline but upon finishing the book and listening to the author’s notes, I changed my tune. Again, powerful faith, redeeming love and goodness. So much heartbreak but so much the reality of living in a sin stained world.
