By examining the Book of Proverbs through the lens of the Ten Commandments, you are called to fear, love, and trust the Lord because He forgives, loves, and treasures you first. In Provoking Proverbs: Wisdom and the Ten Commandments, look for guidance and wisdom in your favorite proverbs as you draw near to Christ.
Our Wednesday night Bible study worked through this book — it is so well written and filled with clever alliteration and many examples of worldly “words to wise” that made for delightful reading. The Ten Commandments are used as an “outline” for studying a variety of verses throughout the book of Proverbs, and Luther’s explanation of the commandments rounds out each chapter with reminders of how our lives are to glorify God and serve our neighbors. It’s an approachable study of how God’s wisdom can and should impact our daily lives, using plenty of proof texts from the old and new testaments to flesh out, support, and explain the wisdom of the book of Proverbs.
This Bible study categorizes the Book of Proverbs according to the Ten Commandments. It stimulated a lot of good conversation. Lots of wit and humor, too.
