This book was exactly what I was looking for to quench my curiosity on the when and the how this amazing national park came to be. I wanted to know the history on how the area was first explored and the timeline regarding its discovery by Euro-Americans, as well as precisely how Wonderland was morphed into the park we know today. Gourley covers all of this and much more. I thoroughly enjoyed this well written account of Yellowstone’s history.

I really enjoyed the early history of our first national park. It is fun to imagine those times and the author was excellent in description. Four stars due to a couple sections where a side-bar topic droned on and made me hope that the next page would return me to the park.

Perhaps I should have read PRIOR to my trip to Yellowstone. Regardless, I picked it up in one of their visitor centers. Excellent history of our nations first national park and what it took to make it happen. Remote camping in the park and just amazingly beautiful, beyond description.
