My name is Deborah Williamson Rine. I grew up in Illinois, New York and Washington D.C. I was fortunate to spend a year in France when fifteen and a year in Göteborg, Sweden following high school. After Northwestern University, I lived in Milan, Verona, Paris and Brussels. These experiences created a love of different cultures, people and food. “Life is a smorgasbord and I want to sample it all.” I was a French teacher for many years. The Lake is my first book. I don’t know why I waited so long to start writing because it’s a delectable challenge. I love diving into the story and seeing what happens!
Recommended by a friend of mine (neighbor at the beach) as he was interviewed by the author as she was writing this. I contacted the author and she wrote back! Hoping to get her to sign my book when we go down with The Book Club Belles in September!
I enjoyed the book and thought it was fun to read as I recognized several of the restaurants and places she mentioned. It made me wonder if this kind of story could be true…
I enjoyed this book, but it was read to me by an AI narrator, which I found very dull.
The book itself was good...just didn't like the narration and that was the reason for 3 stars. The story revolves around Claire, who loses her job via a text message, and then later that night is contacted by the local police, for whom her husband works. They have found his body on the beach, and it appears that he drowned.
But Claire immediately realized something was wrong. Not only was Dax a wonderful swimmer, but the trunks he has on when he was found are nothing he would have owned. Upon further investigation, it is determined he was murdered. Then, days later, their home is ransacked, and Claire begins to "investigate" the murder on her own. She finds many clues that lead her to believe her husband was working on a case, unbeknownst to his coworkers, that deals with missing girls in their area.
Again, I enjoyed the storyline, but will not listen to another book that notes that the narration is done by AI...just didn't have the same inflection, etc, that a real person has when narrating books.
The plot focuses on the issue of human trafficking/prostitution and shows how difficult these situations can be to investigate. Enjoyed being “in touch” again with Claire whose character was the beginning of this series. I’m hoping the author will continue the 30a storyline especially since she has moved to this beautiful area!
A solid 4.5⭐️ read! I picked this book up on a weekend trip in 30A and finally got around to reading it. The book would have been perfect for an easy beach read. The plot was great I just wish the ending had more! I was sucked in and couldn’t put it down until I was finished.
Great beach read, especially if you are on 30A. I just stayed a week in Seaside, so I liked seeing the names of places I knew of or had visited. Finished it in less than 24 hours!
Claire finds out via text message that she has been fired from her job because of her declining sales. If that isn't bad enough, she receives even worse news: her husband was found drowned in the Gulf of Mexico. A few days later, she finds her home ransacked. Claire begins a career in real estate but continues her investigation into what happened to Dax.
I found this book to be a quick and enjoyable read.
