USA Today Bestselling author Trixie Silvertale grew up reading an endless supply of Lilian Jackson Braun, Hardy Boys, and Nancy Drew novels. She loves the amateur sleuths in cozy mysteries and and obsesses about all things paranormal. Those two passions unite in her Mitzy Moon Mysteries, and she's thrilled to write them and share them with you.
I love when fall comes around because I know my favorite authors are going to be releasing Halloween Anthologies. I enjoy these collections so much. In this one, I started off with Trixie Silvertale. I adore Mitzy Moon. When I saw a Mitzy short story included, I was drooling for this book. If you haven’t read any of Mitzy’s books, here’s a quick catch up. Mitzy has spent much of her childhood in foster care, making her a little rough around the edges. As a young barista, she discovers her father’s mother named her in a will. She was left a bookstore... a haunted bookstore! Her grandmother is still there in ghostly form. This relationship never fails to warm my heart. Mitzy, with help from her Ghost-ma, their cat, a wizardly attorney and a hunky sheriff, finds she is very good at solving mysteries. There might be some magical powers involved, too. I hope you enjoy the Mitzy Moon Halloween story and encourage you to look up the series. The next story I picked featured sisters Connie and Sage and is written by Mona Marple. I love Connie and Sage. Sage is deceased but still hanging about Connie. Together they live in a magical town where Sage flirts and enjoys life after death while helping Connie solve mysteries. This story was so fun! I just love when Sage flirts! The sisters attend an author’s reading on Halloween night. Who knew the deceased author may also be a murderer? Connie, with Sage’s unique way of helping, is determined to clear her favorite author... unless he really did it! If you enjoy this story as much as I did be sure to click on the link to receive a free short story and learn more about Mona Marple. These are just two of the spooktacular stories you will find in this collection. I don’t want to make this super long. Other stories include a haunted tour, (I loved because I always wanted to do one of these!), by Erin Johnson, Marley is hosting a party in Hillcrest by Amorette Anderson, Anna, Pratt, Joss and Pastor Frederick are on the case to help a young man who had asked the Pastor for help in the story by Sam Cheever, Zoe buys a necklace that surprises her with new clues in an unsolved mystery by Lily Webb, Chalice sniffs out a murder while out walking around trying to figure out how to help Winslow prove her value in this fun story by Summer Prescott, Mandy and Katie go on a Halloween double date to...where else? A haunted swamp in the story by Lotta Smith, (new author to delight me), Jayce is at PaganCon, when she is approached a woman bringing news of a Druid and dark magic in the story by Kirsten Weiss, Maggie and Spencer are looking into a shipwreck and murder that is about two hundred years old in the story by Cate Dean, (I need to check out the Maggie Mulgrew series), J.L. Collins wrote an intriguing mystery about animal familiars, (another author I hadn’t read before), Shéa MacLeod shared a story from Deepwood, Oregon where the local witch is blackmailed by the sheriff! It’s to help solve a mystery but things don’t look good for Edwina. The author makes mention of a bacon-topped maple bar which is my favorite donut so she caught my attention pretty quick. The last story in the book is by an author I didn’t recognize either but the story was so delicious! What could be more fun than a girls getaway at a B&B? How about a spooky one in a haunted B&B where the owner disappears? I loved this one! You can tell this anthology is a definite Halloween Treat. Grab it, some candles and tasty treats then settle in for some Halloween fun.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Cold Cases and Haunted Places is a Halloween Anthology of short stories by fourteen of today's leading paranormal cozy mystery writers. I am sure that you will find something that you will enjoy within this book. Below are the two stories that I have read. Haunted Tours and Evildoers by Erin Johnson Haunted Tours and Evildoers by Erin Johnson is all about Imogen wanting to celebrate Halloween with her friends and go through a haunted sewer tour. Well, it all starts fine until their tour guide dies. I have to say that it got me good. I had no clue about the killer's motive on this one. It was nice being back in Imogen's point of view and having them sort of team up with Jolene, Peter, and Daisy. The mystery was pretty cool, and I loved the tour guide's way of doing the tour. Ms. Johnson, overall did a great job on this little short read, and I loved every minute of it. I am giving it five stars.
Druid by Kirsten Weiss Druid by Kirsten Weiss is a great read for a quick Halloween read. Ms. Weiss does a great job of not only including witches but other supernatural creatures in this mystery. I figured out who the killer was but not the motive or reason why the killer did it. Sadly, I fell for the red herring's motive. I am giving this one, just like Ms. Johnson's book, five stars, and recommending this whole book collection. I am sure the others are as good as these two, so yes, I am recommending it.
Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Haunted Tours and Evildoers by Erin Johnson and Druid by Kirsten Weiss. Cold Cases and Haunted Places ~ A Halloween Anthology is a fabulous collection of short stories. I hope to read the rest of them in the future.
If you enjoy cozy mysteries, you must read this book. Doubly so if you enjoy stories based around Halloween with its witches, ghosts, and talking animals.
This anthology of paranormal cozy mystery shorts contains stories from 14 amazing cozy mystery authors. As the weather cooled a bit, I enjoyed sitting back with a cup of hot chocolate and reading this collection of fun and spooky stories.
Trixie Silvertales’ story was, of course, my favorite as I adore her Mitzy Moon cozy mystery series. I especially loved Deputy Paulsen’s character in this story.
At the end of some of the stories are links to get free short stories. The readers will probably be familiar with some of the authors as they all have established paranormal cozy mysteries themselves. This is the perfect opportunity to discover new authors in this fun genre. The stories are sure to entertain you, and some will make you chuckle. You are sure to find some new favorite authors from this collection.
I received an advance e-galley of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This was a fun collection, and I found a few more authors to try out.
Haunted Tours & Evildoers by Erin Johnson ★★★★☆ Such a fun cast of characters and it has a solid mystery. It was nice that it felt like a full and complete story considering it was roughly 50 pages long.
Reaper Madness by by Nova Nelson ★★★★☆ Loved the writing style here. Haven’t seen many stories that involve reapers, so I really enjoyed the idea of this.
Bohemian to the Bone by Amorette Anderson ★★☆☆☆ The idea of this was fun but it wasn’t executed very well. The characters felt at least a decade younger than they were supposed to be.
Yesterday’s Fears by Sam Cheever ★★☆☆☆ Can’t say I liked this one much. There wasn’t any heart to it.
Charms and Charges by Lily Webb ★★★★☆ A really great mystery with enjoyable characters!
Wicked in the Water by Lotta Smith ★★★☆☆ Liked it but didn’t love it.
Druid by Kirsten Weiss ★★★★☆ Very imaginative and the mystery was done well.
Ghosts & Bad Toasts by Trixie Silvertale ★★★★★ Fantastic! The main character’s inner monologue is hysterical.
Murder, He Wrote? by Mona Marple ★★☆☆☆ This is my second time reading a short story by this author, and sadly I can say that this series just isn’t for me.
Change in the Tide by Cate Dean ★★★★★ Exceptionally well written and had a great mystery as well as a great deal of charm. The characters were outstanding and lovely.
Charming Chalice by Summer Prescott ★★★☆☆ This was a very cute story. Enjoyable enough without getting too serious.
Hush Magic by J.L. Collins ★★★☆☆ A bit predictable but still fun. Loved the familiars and I’m intrigued about the town. Will likely continue this series.
Alchemy, Arsenic & Alibis by Shéa MacLeod ★★★☆☆ I loved having ancient Egyptian mythology mixed into this story.
Girls Fright Out by Rebecca Regnier ★★☆☆☆ It was fine, but it was mostly boring.
Cold Cases and Haunted Places is a Halloween anthology of short stories that are a great combination of creepy, spooky and cute cozies that kept me turning the pages. This anthology gave me a great opportunity to try new authors that I might have missed. Some of the stories pulled me in right away and some took me a little time to feel comfortable in "their world". All in all, it was a great way to spend a fall afternoon reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.
I received this book filled with stories of death and mayhem, as a FREE ARC copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review. These short stories are entertaining and delightful to read.
The story lines were interesting, the writing good. However, the genre was new to me and I'm a more conventional person. I'd recommend the book to readers more adventurous than me!
This is a very fun anthology. It includes stories from some of my favorite authors- Amorette Anderson, Mona Marple, Erin Johnson, Sam Cheever, Trixie Silvertale, and Summer Prescott just to name a few. These wonderful authors write fun mysteries. These are stories from their series. You could get by just reading the series and not read these short stories. You wouldn't miss the storyline if you didn't read this anthology....but, why not!!! The stories are entertaining and a great introduction to these authors. Don't miss this!
I had a wonderful time reading these shorts. While some authors are among my favourites, I had quite few surprises and new entry in my list of must read writers. As with all collections, not every story was a winner, but that's mostly because of personal taste. Definitely recommended!
“ Cold Cases and Haunted Places: A Halloween Anthology” by 14 amazing authors. Some authors are new to me and others are old friends. What a great read to get ready for Halloween! A terrific collection of varying stories involving Witches, Ghosts, Reapers and their Familiars.
Haunted Tours & Evildoers Baking witch, Imogen Banks, and her friends are celebrating Halloween with a haunted tour of the magical island of Bijou Mer. But when one of their party gives up the ghost, the tour participants all become suspects. Can Imogen catch the killer, or will this murder turn into another of the island's unsolved mysteries?
I hadn’t read any of the books previously but I enjoyed this short story about the haunted sewer tour set on the magical island of Bijou Mer. Imogen was interesting, I’m intrigued by her princely beau, and her assorted friends. I can’t wait to read Spells & Caramels series by Erin Johnson.
Reaper Madness by by Nova Nelson Ted adores his job as Eastwind's reaper. However, a recent dearth of death has him feeling like a spare part. But when the next person passes and he goes to collect her soul, he makes a grim discovery: there's no soul to be found. Can Ted find what's lost in time to avoid a public panic?
I have not read any of the Eastwind’s magical mysteries before but I was pleasantly surprised by this story and now plan to read them.
Bohemian to the Bone by Amorette Anderson It's Halloween in Hillcrest, and Marley and her witch sisters are planning a party! While digging through decorations, Marley uncovers a puzzling clue. Could it lead to answers about one of the town's most intriguing cold cases?
It was fun to solve a 50 year old cold case with Marley and Penny. I haven’t read any of the Hillcrest Witch Cozy Mysteries before but I will now.
Yesterday’s Fears by Sam Cheever Some people are willing to kill to keep their sins hidden. Others are willing to die to expose them. When one of Pastor Frederick's parishioners is targeted by a killer, their only hope might come from the ether. And the good pastor knows just the ghost who can help.
I enjoyed this mystery with the ghost Joss who protects Anna. I’m not sure if I have read one of the Yesterday’s Paranormal Mysteries before or not but it was very entertaining.
Charms and Charges by Lily Webb I am a huge fan of this series and love the protagonist Zoe Clarke! I was super excited to read this short by Lily Webb as it’s been a few months since I visited Moon Grove NC.
In this book magical sleuth Zoe Clarke unknowingly buys Adeline Craft's necklace from a paranormal pawnshop. When the necklace brings Zoe new clues of Adelines disappearance from the beyond, can she solve the case, or will she be next to disappear?
I would recommend this Halloween Anthology to all my friends that enjoy cozy mysteries. I am looking forward to the next one that comes out!
I requested and received an Advanced Readers Copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Very impressive collection of spooky-not-scary shorts!
I must say, this was the best anthology I have ever read: there wasn’t a story in there that I didn’t like, and most of them went straight to my top-favorites list! The stories were all pretty well-developed for short stories. Some authors were already on my radar, but I now have a few new favorite authors!
The stories all work perfectly well as standalones. I thought they were all very well-written, to a high standard. Sooo good!!! Excellent, outstanding!!! Such fun! I highly recommend this collection!
Per short story:
Haunted Tours & Evildoers by Erin Johnson This short is about Imogen, from the series Spells and Caramels. Such fun! And a great way of getting to know the wonderful characters of the series and the picturesque setting of the magical island of Bijou Mer. Amazing story! What a great mystery!
Reaper Madness by by Nova Nelson Ted the Grim Reaper! One of my favorite characters from Eastwind, and I was so excited for this story! He’s so misunderstood; most people fear him, but he’s not responsible for death. It was such an entertaining story!!! Ted steals the show for once, and I LOVED it! Heh.
Bohemian to the Bone by Amorette Anderson Anderson always provides a mix of lighthearted fun and depth, in a lighthearted tone. And this was no different. I loved it! Marley and her witch sisters have their work cut out for them. It was an awesome story! A cold case, and it’s up to them to solve the mystery.
Yesterday’s Fears by Sam Cheever One of my favorite series: Yesterday Mysteries. It can get very scary, with the ghosts! And this short story was so good. It was intriguing, exciting and suspenseful! I highly recommend it! Very well-developed for a short story!
Charms and Charges by Lily Webb A necklace in a paranormal pawnshop calls to Zoe. Literally, I mean. A voice. So cool! A cold missing person case: the unsolved mystery of young witch Adeline Craft's disappearance has haunted Moon Grove for years. Well-written and clever.
Wicked in the Water by Lotta Smith We get to see Mandy in her high school days, how fun, how enjoyable! Mandy’s first encounter! I’m so glad the author found a way of including Jackie the ghost, who is my favorite character in the Paranormal in Manhattan mystery series.
Druid by Kirsten Weiss A well-written, more-ish story. Witch Jayce (one of the witches from the series The Witches of Doyle) is asked to help a druid in distress. A riveting story that made me turn the pages as quickly as I could. I enjoyed this immensely, and now I want more!
Ghosts & Bad Toasts by Trixie Silvertale What an awesome story! A great way to get familiar with the Mitzy Moon Mysteries, which is really one of my all-time favorite series out there. Definitely recommend! I really loved Sid! Who is Sid, you ask? Well, just read!
Murder, He Wrote? by Mona Marple What a great story! I loved the banter between Connie and Sage. For those of you not in the know: Sage is a ghost. Sage really knows how to liven things up! I loved the case! A cold case, and I couldn’t have guessed the ending! Excellently done.
Change in the Tide by Cate Dean A very cold case. Ice and ice cold. But it does carry over into the present. What a pleasant story! I was missing the paranormal element though. Not that it mattered! It was a very entertaining and enjoyable story and I’ve found a new author! A clever case!
Charming Chalice by Summer Prescott I was really drawn into the story. The Winsome Witch Winslow and her familiar Chalice. Chalice needs to help Winslow solve a case. What an enjoyable story! I liked it a lot! It was a different sort of read, the good kind of different, original!
Hush Magic by J.L. Collins A story about Indie, Ice Witch. The animal familiars of Charming Springs lose their mystical magic. Love love love! I was pulled into the story quickly, which is important in a short. It was a very original case, and I’ve found another new-to-me favorite author!
Alchemy, Arsenic & Alibis by Shéa MacLeod I loved the tone of this story. Wow, another new-to-me favorite author! I loved that Edwina is an older witch, with a lot of magical experience. She’s straight-forward, no-nonsense, a bit scary even! And weirdly enough: I liked her! She made me smile! Exciting story!
Girls Fright Out by Rebecca Regnier A nice story to end this incredible collection with. The main character Marzie is relatable. It starts with history, and then it’s on to strange things! A fun read. I did guess whodunit, but I don’t mind being right ;) Although there was one thing I didn’t see coming!
Cold Cases and Haunted Places The days are getting shorter and the air is noticeably cooler, so why not settle down with this Halloween cosy (some are more chilling than cosy) novella anthology and start reading – they may not all be to your taste but you may find your favourite author among them or even find a few new favourites, which is even better as you can then go read all their previous books. First up is one of my personal favourite authors – Erin Johnson with Haunted Tours & Evildoers, some of the former royal bakers from her Spells and Caramels series are back in Bijou Mer taking a tour of the sewers for Halloween (as you do!). The tour guide tells a story of a murder using a jewelled knife and shortly after is found dead, stabbed by said knife. Imogen sets out to solve the mystery of who on the tour could have done the dastardly deed, but her new royal status is no help with the other disgruntled tour members. There is a brief appearance of Jolene, Peter and Daisy from the Magic Market series but sadly no sarky remarks from Daisy the dog. 5* Reaper Madness by Nova Nelson is next; Ted the not so grim reaper is depressed because he hasn’t had any deaths to deal with lately, and when people do die, he is too late to guide their souls to a better place – who is trying to do his job for him? 3* Bohemian to the Bone by Amorette Anderson; Marley is a witch who sees ghosts and is trying to solve the 50-year-old mystery of her friend’s aunt who disappeared without trace. Marley can see Shirley and know that she has died but Shirley cannot remember who killed her or why. Marley and her friend Penny only have a few random words as clues to solve a very cold case, thankfully they have some magic to help them – I have already downloaded the first box set of this series. 5* Yesterday's Fears by Sam Cheever; Dark story of a malevolent and murderous ghost, not my style. 3* Charms and Charges by Lily Webb; Young journalist and new to witchcraft Zoe investigates a 13 year old case of a young woman who disappeared, why does she hear a voice when she comes across a necklace that may have been owned by the misper, enjoyed this. 4* Wicked in the Water by Lotta Smith; Mandy recounts a story to her friends about her first ghostly encounter, not my favourite. 3* Druid by Kirsten Weiss; Good story and characters, spine chilling villain and situation, but the ending was a bit of an anti-climax. 4* Ghosts and bad Toasts by Trixie Silvertale; Mitzy Moon attends a party and meets a 1920's ghostly relative, cue lots of gangster slang, can she help the remaining members of the gang move on? 3* Murder He Wrote by Mona Marple; A town where the living and ghosts coexist, at a book tour event a ghost writer is accused of murder by a journalist. Connie investigates to clear her favourite author's name, good story and characters. 4* Change in the Tide by Cate Dean; Young adventurers solve the mystery surrounding a shipwreck, not sure why the whole town seemed to be watching them, no mention of magic in this story. 3* Charming Chalice by Summer Prescott; Chalice the cat helps a novice witch to uncover a crime and stop her from being stripped of her power. 3* Hush Magic by JL Collins; A town of witches and talking animals is in shock when the animals go mundane. Indie, the editor of the local newspaper investigates, hoping to find how to get the familiars back to their normal behaviour, enjoyable. 4* Alchemy, Arsenic and Alibis by Shea MacLeod; Edwina helps the police chief investigate the death of arsenic poisoning in an ancient looking woman whose ID states that she is 21years old. Who stole her youth and why? 4* Girls Fright Out by Rebecca Regnier; Marzie and 2 friends head off to a failing hotel and spa where the guests are scared off by strange happenings, can they work out who is sabotaging the business?
Alchemy, Arsenic, and Alibis by Shéa MacLeod Wonderful quick mystery. Love the older main character and the relationship with the chief. Really looking forward to reading more of this series.
Hush Magic by J. L. Collins This is from one of my favorite series. The town of Charming Springs didn’t have enough trouble. First it’s always winter and now all of the town’s talking familiars have lost their ability to speak. Not only that, but now they are acting like ordinary animals. Indie, with the help of her familiar, Goldie (who seems to not be affected) work together to figure out who did this and why. Indie and Goldie are such a fun mystery solving team.
Haunted Tours & Evildoers by Erin Johnson Great Halloween mystery with perfect descriptions so you feel like you’re right there on the ghost tour. Wonderful characters, lots of suspects, and a perfect wrap-up. Can’t wait to read more from this series.
Reaper Madness by Nova Nelson Sweet story about Ted, a lonely reaper, who is either losing his mind or there’s another reaper in his area. Ted is such a likable character.
Bohemian to the Bone by Amorette Anderson Marly and Penny solve a 50 year old disappearance while preparing for a Halloween celebration. Quick enjoyable story.
Charms and Charges by Lily Webb A good story about friendship between Zoe & Mallory and their search for information about a missing girl.
Ghosts and Bad Toasts by Trixie Silvertale Mitzy is ghost hunting at a Halloween part at an asylum. She meets one of her ancestors and helps her to move on from being stuck in a phantom speakeasy. Quick enjoyable story.
Murder, He Wrote? By Mona Marple Connie tries to solve the mystery about who murdered a writer when her favorite author is accused. Connie’s ghost sister, Sage, is hilarious with her “shameless flirting”.
Change in the Tide: A Maggie Mulgrew Mini Mystery by Cate Dean Maggie & Spencer stumble onto a mystery about the killing of the captain of an old ship. A good tale of friendship.
Charming Chalice by Summer Prescott Winslow, with the help of her familiar, cat Chalice, gets justice for a ghost, Polly. Winslow proves that she’s a good witch and will get to keep her powers.
Girls Fright Out by Rebeca Regnier Three witches try to find out who this fabulous hotel spa is empty while still trying to enjoy their weekend away. Quick fun story.
Grab this and meet fourteen of the premier writers of cozies. Included is a short story from each author related to their cozy series. Your new favorite author may be just the turn of a page away! Below is a bit about just three of these amazing stories.
Reaper Madness – Nova Nelson I discovered this great series so long ago it went by another name. Though the name has changed it is still filled with quite a unique setting inhabited by wonderful characters.
Ted is the reaper in Eastwind. It’s a lonely life. No one really wants to spend time with a reaper before death. Lately Ted’s life has been even more desolate. It has been three months since he was called to escort a soul to the beyond.
Will Ted be forced to endure eternity without even the brief company of souls?
Bohemian to the Bone – Amorette Anderson There are two series, so far, from this author set in Hillcrest, Colorado. It is a great small community with a high incidence of murder. Meet Marley and Penny. This witty and whimsical duo are part of the local coven. No doubt you will feel as at home in Hillcrest as I do!
It’s Halloween in Hillcrest with a big town celebration. And the witches are all involved. Marley is slated to tell fortunes. When she goes to borrow some bohemian style clothing, she runs in to a real spook.
Can Marley and Penny solve the mystery of the woman’s death and still make it to the party?
Ghosts and Bad Toasts - Trixie Silvertale Pin Cherry Harbor is a place hard to leave once you have visited! The Bell, Book and Candle bookstore with its resident Caracal named Pyewacket and the Ghostma, may just become your favorite store as it has mine.
Mitzy and her beau, Sheriff Erick, have traded places for this Halloween adventure. The big Halloween event is a party thrown by a chef new to town and hoping to make a restaurant and inn out of an old asylum. Erick goes undercover on the trail of tainted drugs while Mitzy wants to check out the rumors of hauntings at the site. But when a party goer falls to her death it will take them both to solve this crime!
Always nice to discover some new authors while reading short stories. All the stories in this book are around the theme or time of Halloween, which fit perfectly in this time of the year. 13 (yes 13) short stories a number which fits good with Halloween.
From all those writers I only read books before from Rebecca Regnier. Her books I always read with pleasure and this short story was in the same style and with the same main characters,
In this book you can find something for everybody to enjoy, but you have to like Halloween. Most stories had unsolved murders, ghosts, magic and mysteries in them. All of them were an easy read. All of them I like to read, but some a bit more as others.
The story I liked the most was written by Rebecca and next to that I liked the stories of J.L. Collins and Trixie Silvertale, but from some other writers I want to read more in the future too.
To be fair, I was most attracted to this collection of stories because one of my favorite authors, Sam Cheever, was included along with the newest installment of her Yesterday's series! I immediately jumped ahead to her story and was NOT disappointed! The story line from her previous book picks up and we are transported back to the antique shop with our favorite characters Anna, Pratt and, of course, Joss, our favorite protective handsome ghost! Our last encounter had Anna herself in the cold bands of the ether where she would likely have remained if Joss hadn't been able to rescue her. This latest story almost cost Pratt a trip there himself. The spirit in an old family manor was out for blood. It wanted revenge on anyone who would enter its doors, even the son who tried to stop it was no match for the evil within. It would be up to Anna and Pratt with the help of Joss to put an end to this evil. But it is too strong? Will the ether claim another soul? I just loved this story. You will as well I am sure!
There are 13 additional stories in this collection by some very talented writers. Take a tour of the haunted tunnels and sewer with Erin Johnson where not everyone who enters will return alive! Join Maggie and Spencer as they investigate an old shipwreck. Learn more about what Mandy was like before joining the FBI'S Paranormal Cases Division when she went to the haunted swamp on a double date only to learn there was more in the water than alligators!!!
14 short, entertaining books in one set, each by a different author, all of which will entertain you. It's a great way to expose yourself to authors with whom you may not yet be familiar and find a new favorite of your own. Though none of these books will give you nightmares, I would recommend reading with the lights on...just in case!
Love this time of year and reading 14 short Cozy mystery's is a good way to spend and afternoon i found new authors worth taking a second look at and authors and characters of serious that I was a huge fan of. I didn't dislike any of the stories but her are just a few of the stories that were my favorite.
Erin Johnson (Haunted Tours and Evildoers) this is a great series with fun characters on the island of Bijou Mer from the Spells and Caramels series you have a Halloween tour that goes terrible wrong when someone ends up dead.
Nova Nelson (Reaper Madness) yah its about Ted the Grimm Reaper of Eastwind who gets a bad rap just because he collects the recently deceased well this is his mystery this time.
Amorette Anderson (Bohemian to The Bone) I have never read this author but I will now I love a good witch series and it involves a family of sisters.
Rebecca Regnier (Girls Frieght) Well I'm definitely a Marzie Novac fan Widows Bay you have all kinds of bad guys and one divorce whom happens to be a witch. Marzie just wants some spa time with her friends but like everything with Marzie it some how gets crazy.
Cate Dean ( Change in the Tide) Another new author for me this envolves a cold cass of murder a mysterious compass and a shipwreck. I'm going to read more by this author.
These are just a few of the great stories in this collection there is a little bit of everything if you like, ghosts, witches, cold casses and there familiar J.L. Collins has you covered with (Hush Magic) If you like a little spook with your story Sam Cheever (Yesterday's Fears). I would recommend this collection to catch up with your favorite characters or try new authors in the cozy mystery genre.
I was allowed to read and advance copy of this story collection and also have purchased it. This is my honest review.
“Cold cases and Haunted places: a Halloween Anthology of Paranormal Cozy Mystery Shorts,” by Trixie Silvertale consists of short stories by 14 amazing authors. I enjoyed sitting back and reading these stories when I got home from a long shift at work.
All of these short stories were interesting, intriguing and had very likable characters and animals. I wish I had the time to tell you a little about all of the books, however don’t want to give too much away. I can say that without a doubt this is one of the best anthologies I have read to date.
The short stories were well written and imaginative. I have been introduced to several authors whose works I had not read to this point, however I will read their books now. There were some of the stories I liked more than others, however overall they were good mix. I encourage anyone who enjoys paranormal cozy mysteries to get the book and settle in for a few laughs, thrills and witchy fun!
Just in time for great Hallowe'en reading! Upfront here: I'm not usually a reader of anthologies. Or short stories in general.
But this was an interesting mix of favourite authors - Mona Marple, Kirsten Weiss, Shea Macleod, and Trixie Silvertale among them - and new-to-me authors. And who isn't always on the lookout for a new author with a new cozy series for you to explore?
The stories included here are great snapshots, filled with wonderful characters, some creepy villains, and a good few twists that this reader sure wasn't expecting! So put away your bias against short stories without fear; this is one anthology you will love. I promise. I sure enjoyed every story!
[I was fortunate to receive an ARC copy of this book but was not required to write a review. The opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.]
The perfect bundle of cozy mysteries for Halloween!
It probably hurt the other authors that this book starts with my absolute favorite. (Erin Johnson) but all of the stories were spooky good.
I loved being able to check in with the characters in series that I've been reading through. These anthologies are one of my favorite parts of reading the cozy mystery genre. I can always get more of my favorite characters, plus discover new characters to dive into.
With this bundle, they pulled out all the stops, many authors I already knew and loved, plus I was able to make a good size list of authors to check out.
You're going to love this anthology if you love paranormal cozies!
This anthology was similar to the last one I read, but I think I may have liked it even better. These authors are so creative and ingenious when it comes to the mystery plot lines. I particularly enjoyed the last mystery in this one - it read just like a good, old fashioned mystery, even though the three main characters were witches in a Girls Night Out (except that it was a weekend in this case.) well, at least it did until the very end when they cast a spell to solve the crime - a very mundane crime at that.
It was a great Halloween read. Now I need to squeeze in a few more serious books before I switch to Christmas books for the holidays!
Review for "Bohemian To The Bone" by Amorette Anderson.
In this enjoyable collection Marley and Penny are at it again. Marley is getting more adept at seeing "ghostly" images and Penny is strongly involved with her own unique talents. The setting is Halloween Day and this duo is trying on costumes for the annual Halloween party. Low and behold a "ghostly" presence seems to appear in the bedroom with them. It appears to be a "cold case" of a 26 yo lady who had disappeared 50 years ago. Could she be hanging around because her murder was never solved? Join this dynamic duo as they, once again, try to find justice. A fun, easy read with a very sweet ending. Vicki From Wyoming
I started with Erin Johnson’s story which was a great Imogen and Harry haunt. Then moved onto Sam Cheever’s story. Both put me in the Halloween spirit. I then ventured onto the other stories. What a wonderful way to try out new authors. I have read a few of the authors but most are new to me. This is a great collection of stories and just in time for Halloween.
I enjoyed the stories. I plan on checking out other books by the eight authors I just discovered. I was given an advanced readers e-copy and am not required to leave a positive review.
This is a set of short stories from several authors. Most of the authors were new to me while a couple of them I have read in the past and do not follow, as such these stories did not affect my rating as I didn't read them.
Of the stories I read, most of them have developed characters and they come from current storylines of those particular series.
Some of them were not really long enough for me to really get a feel of their writing style.
But there are a couple that I plan to read more from.
Anthologies are the way to go with providing hours of uninterrupted entertainment, and when it’s filled with works by these amazing authors, it guarantees you will be pleased. A short by Trixie Silvertale is included which has Mitzi Moon and Eric once again teamed up going after another mysterious evil doer. This along with the rest of these mysteries stimulate your noggin with trying to solve them before the author puts you out of your misery! Love this fall collection! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
I loved every story in this book. Every author did a wonderful job getting into the spirit of the Halloween season. There were new to me authors like Rebecca Regnier, Cate Dean and Shea MacLeod. Then there were the stories from my go to authors that were fun and interesting like J.L. Collins, Tricia Silvertale and Lilly Webb. I really could not give you a book in this anthology that I would not read again. I highly recommend this Halloween anthology.
This is a sweet Halloween anthology. It has an amazing number of stories with that ghostly Halloween vibe. You’ll find some of your favorite authors and some new ones to explore. Some of my favorites are Trixie Silvertail, Amorette Anderson, Mona Marple, and Nova Nelson. This are authors I read all the time and would not miss these stories for anything. Plenty of new authors for me that I enjoyed.
I was attracted to this anthology due to the fact that Summer Prescott had a short story in here however I loved every single story. There are a couple of new to me authors in this one and I will definitely be purchasing books from them in the future. Also the price is incredible. Where else can you get 14 stories from different authors for less than a buck.
I received an ARC copy of this for an honest review.
Finally a well-edited anthology! What a relief to find an anthology in which the majority of stories are well written and properly edited! I had almost given up on collections altogether. In fact, there were only a couple of entries that were in need of a more intensive edit, and even those were still readable. For the most part, the stories were enjoyable and perfect for the season. By far the best anthology I've read in years.
