The Language of School design is a seminal work because it defines a new graphic vocabulary that synthesizes learning research with best practice in school planning and design. But it is more than a book about ideas. It is also a practical tool and a must-have resource for all school stakeholders involved in planning, designing and constructing new and renovated schools and evaluating the educational adequacy of existing school facilities.
Alexander's pattern language approach still holds appeal among some architects and this school building design manual is an example of that. Looking at architecture in terms of spatial patterns can be illuminating but mostly about architecture rather than about use and performance. Those aspects remain founded on belief and claim rather than evidence and analysis. In the end, most patterns presented in the book are just types of building parts, sometimes even too big, practically complete buildings. The difference from similar manuals is primarily in the terminology.
