Chloe
A folded up flag is all that remains.
My brother lost overseas.
And every single day, I face the man who walked away.
The man who couldn't save him.
The one I blame, even if he's not at fault.
He haunts every step I take, and I can't escape.
I'm not sure I can convince him to let me go.
I'm definitely not strong enough to admit the truth.
I never stopped loving him.

Ian
The sight of her holding that flag will haunt me until the day I die.
One night.
One mistake.
One failed mission.
Two families ruined forever.
The right thing to do is walk away.
Especially when I see rage in her eyes.
She doesn’t need the trouble I’ll bring her way.
There’s only one thing I’m good for.
And it sure as hell doesn’t include fixing her problems.
With my expertise, I can break her down and tear her apart.
I just can’t put her back together again.
But she’s in my blood, and I can’t let her go.
She might be shattered and broken, but I never wanted her perfect.
I just want her.

Definitely dont read any of these Birch Police Department books without a massive box of tissues at hand because they are heartbreaking and Break It Down does that.

With the loss of her brother - Kevin, Chloe completely shuts down and shuts out her fiance - Ian. My heart broke for her but Ian made my heart hurt. This man was utterly in love with this woman and she just cut him out of her life. I just loved Kevin's letters and dares. I cried my eyes out reading those parts. Heartwarming and touching too.

Nox and Bee gave a much needed bit of lightheartedness. So did the other friends and family (from earlier books). Ian and Chloe's book was a lovely read with a few plot twists that were unexpected. I just love this series and all the characters so far. Im looking forward to Below The Line now

Wait for the big shocker towards the end, it won’t leave your eye’s dry!
I’ve already read their pervious stories but this one I feel is much more emotional. This might be a stand alone but I would strongly suggest reading the others, especially when those couples plus the kids are in this story pretty much 85% of the time.

The next book will be of Logan & Teri’s story, so we can finally figure out what the heck’s happening with those two.

Oh my, how emotional was this one! I couldn't put it down. Ian and Chloe's journey to HEA was definitely not easy. They were about to get married when her brother was killed. She immediately pushed him away after that. But I loved how Ian just kept pushing and didn't give up on her though. All the feels these two give me though! Their story was filled with so many twists and turns, heartbreak. But they will keep you guessing. I can't wait for the next book.

April always delivers an outstanding story that has your heart beating faster and your stomach in knots. Break it Down is no exception. This one is so emotional that there were tears being shed.

Chloe just lost her brother. Kevin, over seas and decided that it was her fiance's, Ian, fault and breaks off the engagement. She is deviated at both the loss of her brother but also calling off the engagement. When it comes to the reading of her brother's will he had a bucket list that all his friends and Chloe needed to complete. There would be nine if them staying at a lakeside cabin and during the time there they would complete his list.Would this time away help heal Chloe? Could Ian get her to change her mind? Can a tragedy open her eyes to the love that they share?

Ian has loved Chloe all his life. Yes she is his best friend's little sister but that never stopped him. When Kevin was killed he was lost. Then Chloe broke off the engagement and he was broken. He decided that he was not going to walk away and instead he was going to be there for her and hopefully change her mind. Can he get her to see that they belong together? Will carrying around the ring be a good luck charm?

What happens when news breaks that is beyond believable? Can they all survive? What happens when Chloe is in danger?

The chemistry between Chloe and Ian is off the charts. The live they share is something I feel we all want.

All of April's books are outstanding but I have to say Break it Down is by far my favorite. The detail in her writing and the storyline had me riding an emotional rollercoaster. As always her books are a must addition to your TBR list. Thank you April for sharing your passion for writing and your readers.

Break It Down is the fourth book in the Birch Police Department series. This could be read as a stand alone, but there are a lot of previous characters, couples, and references. Chloe has just lost the two most important people in her life: her brother overseas, and her fiancé whom she pushed away. When her brother’s will demands everyone to come together, Chloe and Ian have a chance to try again and let their love heal wounds. But when danger comes from different corners of the world, is it possible for them to find their bliss?

Oh my gosh. This book was hard to read. I’m pretty sure I cried for a solid 80% of this book. But I don’t regret reading these pages. Chloe and Ian completely swept me away, pulled me from my realities, immersed me into their life, their pains, their passion, and their love, and I adored the ways that I was broken down to be built back up again. There is such a deep sense of brotherhood that Ian has with his friends, of family that Chloe finds with her friends, and the overarching theme of never giving up on those you love. Chloe was hurting and yet, she was so strong! She could admit to her mistakes and she could accept help. Ian was perfection. So loving and caring and I loved the sacrifices he was willing to make for Chloe and those they loved. I adored them together! Their passion, their connection, the ways they could laugh through their memories and pain, and they honestly just felt so real. This book hit me in the feels due to my connections to the military, and I can honestly say that I did not want to put this book down. I was a little surprised by some of the ending drama, but I still loved it! This series is a perfect tear jerker, emotional rollercoaster of a ride, but love truly triumphs!

This is Chloe and Ian's story. This is really emotional. She looses her brother overseas and is so heartbroken that she does something drastic . There is also something that happens that I didn't even see coming. Wonderful story, emotional, and a very HEA.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I will say this book keeps you on your toes. It has all the highs and lows. And just when think everything is great and it'll be okay, bam you are hit with a twist! And then bam another twist!! This book sucks you in and you just have to know what is going to happen!

Ian
He lost the two most important people in his life within a week. His lost his best friend and the love his life, who also happens to be his best friend's little sister. He couldn't bare the thought of losing them both but he knew Chloe needed time and space to get over losing her brother. But Ian wasn't going to give up so easy. He was always around when Chloe needed him, no matter how many time she told him she hated him.

Chloe
Lost her brother and closed herself off to the world. She broke things off with Ian, but no matter how many times she told him he hated him, she knew it was a lie, she just wanted someone to blame her her brother's death. Ian just turned into her verbal punching bag. But no matter how mean she was he always there for her when she needed him.
Then cam the will of her brother and his ridiculous bucketlist that made everyone in his unit and their partners do one last big hooray! The bucketlist would take a week to complete and during that time Chloe learned she wasn't alone that she did have family, and she knew she didn't hate Ian but she just had to figure out to fix everything. But as things were starting to look up for all of them, life throws possibly the biggest curve ball at them all. The unit must band together one last time for the biggest mission of their lives.

Reviewed for A Wanton Book Lover Blog

I loved this book! In Break It Down, the 4th in the Birch Police Department we follow Chole's and Ian's story. Chole has just lost her big brother Kevin while he was serving in the Marines. She is beyond devastated as he was her last living relative. Also devastated in Ian, Chole's former fiancé' and her brother's best-friend. Ian and Chole have loved each other since they were children. When Chole loses Kevin, she lashed out at the person she loves the most Ian and breaks their engagement. But old Ian, he's a therapist and knows a little bit about Chole and her actions. When Kevin leaves bucket-list for Chole, Ian, and all his close friends, Chole realizes that Ian is not to blame and the two eventually find their way back to each other.
Things are not easy going for Chole and Ian. Circumstances change and both Ian and Chole find themselves in precarious situations that they have to fight to get back to each other.
This is my favorite book of the whole series so far. It was really emotional as Chole worked through losing her brother and trying to begin healing for that and then Ian is called out for a dangerous job that she might also lose him too? It was a roller-coaster! I loved that we find out about past characters and what is going on in their lives. Chole's character is funny and provides lol moments (she loves some chicken nuggies too). I was so glad that they got their HEA ending.

Break it Down by April Canavan is the 4th book in the Birch Police Department Series. Now I’m one of those people that like to read all the books in a series in order but I missed the second and third books. I was still able to enjoy this read immensely. The first chapter ripped my heart open, Chloe gets the news that her brother is killed in action. This destroys her from the inside out…what’s even worse is she blames her fiancé for not protecting his best friend. This causes Chloe to break of the engagement. Ian loves Chloe so much…she’s they only girl he’s ever loved…since childhood she’s has his heart and he refuses to give up on her when he knows she needs him the most. Chloe, Ian and Kevin’s closest friends are given a list of things Kevin wanted them to do so Chloe and Ian are thrown together. Ian is determined to show Chloe that no one will ever love her like he does and that their love is a forever kind of love. This story was an emotional roller coaster ride without breaks! I ugly cried, I laughed out loud, I was flabbergasted (especially with the surprise ending). And I can finish this review without mentioning the adorbs Nox and lil Bee. I just can’t this how cute they are. I love the family dynamics in this series. April knows how to pull on those heartstrings. She will break you…then piece you back together…she’s a natural. Thanks April for sharing these wonderful stories with us readers. I received a free advanced copy to read and review.

5*+ Amazing, all the feels romance read
Break It Down (Birch Police Department Book 4) by April Canavan is a wonderfully well written romance that gripped me from the very beginning and didn’t let go until the very end. These characters, Chloe and Ian are probably my favorite couple of this series and ths is book is probably my favorite of the series. It made by laugh out loud and cry! The antics of these Marines cracked me up! And the ladies are not to be outdone, they are just as zaney as their men.
The plot is emotionally gripping and the part Chloe’s brother plays in it is prominent from both character’s perspectives as well as the laughter and the tears. Seriously, this book is not to be missed. In my humble reader opinion, April Canavan hit this one out of the park like a major league grand slam during the final game of the World Series! I feel this way because for me it takes a special book with special characters to actually bring tears to my eyes.
But this author did not leave it there, she always has something else up her sleeve just when emotions even out. There’s an added, unexpected element of suspense and danger close to home with Chloe it the crosshairs.
Overall, this heartfelt book handles a highly emotional subject with love and laughter while bringing it all home with a spectacularly special ending, including Chloe and Ian’s HEA, that made my day.
I read an ARC of this book via Hidden Gems and voluntarily share my review.

Break It Down follows Ian Keller and Chloe Young through their lost of Chloe’s brother and Ian’s best friend, Kevin. Before Kevin’s death Ian and Chloe were together and in love but through her grief she blames Ian for not protecting Kevin, her last living family member.

Oh my poor little heart. I was so heartbroken. The first chapter really got to me!! The way Chloe grieved for her brother was valid but I couldn’t help but to feel bad for Ian. While Chloe was giving up on them, Ian was completely patient taking every mean words spoken to him by the woman he loves, just knowing they’ll end up back together someday, how ever long it’ll take. He has spent his whole entire life pining after her and oh my god it was the cutest thing ever. And Nox is the cutest kid ever!!

I wish we had more glimpses of them growing up, it would have been so cute. And I wish there was a bit more of romance in the book but I get the whole family thing. I also cried like a baby with the unexpected surprise towards the end of the story.

This is my first book of April and I will be reading the rest of the series. April is a fantastic writer and I can’t wait to dive into each and every one of her books. I can’t recommend this book enough.

Break it Down is the 4th book in the Birch Police Department Series and is Ian and Chloe's story and holy crap on a cracker their story was AWEMAZNG!!! To say I loved this book would not do it the justice it deserves, and I don't know that I have the words to convey how truly amazing April is with her writing of this book, but I'm gonna give it a go....this story has allll the emotions, and you feel so many different things in the span of one chapter. Chloe ends things with Ian because she's grieving over the loss of her brother and she says and does some things that she doesn't really mean and wishes she could take back. Ian and Kevin were best friends, so his death hits Ian pretty hard too. He wants to be there for Chloe, but she's pushing him away, he doesn't go all that far because he loves Chloe with everything he has and won't give up on her, and then there's Kevin's "brothers" and their wives who are gonna be there for her as well. There is something that Kevin arranges for everyone that may just bring Ian and Chloe back together. There is also a couple of other things that happen that will rock everyone to their cores!! I am standing on the highest rooftop shouting my recommendation for this book, and all the books in this series!! Y'all are gonna want to read this!!

This is the fourth book in the Birch Police Department series and I swear these books just keep getting better and better. Ian and Chole have been in love with one another for years. However, she breaks it off when her brother, Kevin, dies. Now with Kevin's help they will find their way back to one another.

Okay, this book had all of my emotions going crazy. I read this why I was in the hospital and I am pretty sure some of the crazy heart monitor readings are because of this book. It took me on such a rollercoaster ride.

One thing about April Canavan is that she throws no punches. If the story leads you to hurt and heartache she goes there. Need a some twists and turns that will make you hold your breath? She has those for you as well.

This was truly an amazing read and I can't wait for Terri and Logan to get their story. I can only imagine the ride that one will take us on.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. This review was originally posted on Wickedly Romance

Talk about ripping your heart out with a spoon. Chloe has lost everyone in her life after just losing her brother who is really left? Well, there is one person the love of her life whom she can't seem to be with. Ian won't lose Chloe again and if he has to wait until he's old and gray for her he will. When Chloe's brother's will is read it will put her with the one family that has always been by her side. Kevin's Marine Brothers together with their spouses they take a week-long trip going over his last wishes and what he wanted to do on his bucket list. When Chloe looks at Ian she knows she made a mistake and will do what she can to repair what she broke. The love between these two is so passionate and beautiful you will just fall in love. If you have read the previous books you know all about the guys in the Marine Unit and you get to see them here as well as their lovely spouses. When they get even more shocking news it's up to the Unit to decide what to do. However, no one not even myself expected things to go so wrong towards the end. Can Ian save them all and live happily ever after with the love of his life or will he not only lose her but the brotherhood as well?

Recapturing Their Love And Loss -
Chloe’s world was spinning after she lost her brother and she just didn’t know how to stop it, but every time she tried pushed everyone away, they just kept coming back to console and protect her. Ian wasn’t willing to let Chloe out of his life even after she broke of their engagement because of her grief. Chloe’s brother’s last request took his entire team and family on an expedition to experience what he had always wanted to do and this unexpectedly changed their lives.

However, just when their grief was starting to subside, a couple of curve balls are thrown into their lives, which sends them on an unexpected rescue mission and gives Chloe a reason for staying alive. This story took me on a really emotional journey as I turned the pages, but it left me with a feeling of joy by the time I got to the end. I have read a few books from April Canavan, but she is still a relatively new to me. However, I can definitely say she is becoming one of my favourite authors, as her stories have everything you will want in a thrilling and exciting book.

Sometimes you have to Break it Down so you can build it stronger again

Break it Down is the fourth book in the Birch Police Department series and is a fantastic addition to this series. The story is about Chloe and Ian and it is going to break your heart and make you reach for a lot of tissues. But there is also hope, love, family, commitment, friends and ultimately forgiveness. Chloe is hurt two fold when her brother is killed in action overseas and then she blames Ian, her fiance, for it. Ian is not about to walk away completely from the only woman who he has ever loved and who holds his heart since they were young. It is her brother's last wishes which end up bringing Chloe and Ian together over and over, allowing Ian to show Chloe his is not going anywhere and that they are meant to be together. Yep this one is an emotional roller-coaster ride with a lot of steep drops and doing circles, leaving you feeling like you are hanging upside down at times. But what a fantastic ride as it is so worth it.

I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

If I could rate this book a ten I would! It is fantastic! The story starts off very tragically and it is an emotional journey but one that I could not put down. This story had my in tears one minute and the next I was laughing out loud. It definitely pulls on your heartstrings but you cannot help cheering the characters on the whole way. "Break it Down" is the fourth story in the "Birch Police Department" series and it is intense. It is a stand alone read with connected characters. The story is about Chloe, Ian and family. Ian and Chloe have been in love with each other since they were kids. They are even engaged that is until she finds out her brother, Kevin, has died. Now with Kevin's help they have to help her put the pieces of her life back together again. This story is very addicting with angst, humor, family, death, danger, suspense, passion, love, kidnapping and really good twists and turns. I loved every minute of this story. I am very much looking forward to Logan and Teri's story and hope it does not stop with theirs.

**Tissues are needed if you read this book**

So here we go back to Birch and we meet Ian and Chloe. So we start off crying. No joke ladies, I was in tears. Chloe was just dealt a major blow in life and she is shutting down. She breaks off her engagement to Ian, in which I was like what? Ian and Chloe have known each other since they were kids. Ian's best friend is Chloe's brother Kevin. Chloe is just going through motions in life and pushing people away, that is until her brothers lawyer calls her and his friends in for his last wishes. So she is thrusted in this family bonding which helps her through her issues and she realizes how much she messed up. Can she rectify what she did? We do get a lot of laughs and more tears. While we find out what she does. Then bam here comes the unexpected times two and NO it is not babies. Although I did wish to hear about that. Unfortunately we got side blind by some unexpected news. So how will his all play out. Check out this installment of Birch Police department. Love this series.

I was crying after the first chapter. Ian Keller is a therapist at the Birch Police Dept and Chloe Young is the love of his life and fiancé. That is until she receives word her brother, Kevin, was killed in action on his last mission. She broke their engagement, isolated herself from her friends and blames Ian for her brother’s death. But Ian, although broken-hearted, was there for her through it all, the funeral, the reading of the will and Kevin’s bucket list that all his former brothers in arms were required to do for him. What an awesome and well written storyline with so many emotions from anger, heartbreak, humor, healing, forgiveness, unexpected surprises, a kidnapping, a rescue mission, plenty of steam and a second chance at a forever happiness. I loved all the characters, they were well developed, including the secondary ones as they are included from previous books. I highly recommend this entire series. Kudos to the author and her wonderful storytelling abilities.

Grief affects people in all kinds of ways. Chloe pushed everyone away including Ian the love of her life. She blamed him but that man had the patience for a saint.

“Chloe. I threatened Ian with a knife and a deep grave if he ever asked you out. And you know what that he did? At fifteen years old, he told me to shove it up my a** because you were the sun and the moon and everything else in the sky and that one day he was going to put his ring on your finger, no matter what I did.”
This story had so much emotion and heartbreak but there was also joy and happiness, hilarious banter between all of these unique characters.

“I’m gonna murder every single one of you. Literally tie you down and spoon your eyes out with a rusty spork.”

There where some crazy twists I sure didn’t see coming. I love this series every book has its own trials to overcome. I can’t wait to see where she goes with Teri and Logan.

These books just keep getting better & better as the series goes on! I laughed, I cried, I was shocked & completely overjoyed. This book took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. Kevin is seriously the most psychic character I’ve read… well next to creepy soulful Nox. I cried when they read his letters but also laughed my ass off too. Honesty this book was perfect. I loved getting to see all the characters together & get to know Ian & Chloe all the better. I was so happy they got their second chance!

I will say I had a gut feeling about the surprise at the end but that other surprise shocked the crap out of me. I did not see that coming! I mean I had a bad feeling when we were introduced to them but I was still shocked by everything that followed. This book was full of surprises, happiness, tragedy, & a million wonderful moments. Everything I’ve come to love & expect from this series! I can’t wait for more books because I’m not ready to leave this group behind!

Holy shit is this an amazing story!!! I’ve loved each book in the Birch Police Department series, but this one blows the others away by an immense magnitude.

The death of Chloe’s older brother, Kevin, is beyond devastating. Her brother’s friends and their wives join her on an emotional journey to fulfill his last wishes. Spending time with their friends and pseudo family is healing.

This book had ALL the emotions and feels I could ever want in a book - as I laughed, cried, and gasped throughout the story all I can say is this book is just stunning in its emotional impact. Even though this book is about Chloe and Ian’s second Chance it’s an ensemble of all my favorite characters.

I LOVED this book so much and am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series between Terri and Logan.

This was my first time reading something from this author and I really enjoyed it. It didn't take the usual romance route. The couple is broken up at the beginning following the death of the heroine's brother. And it had an interesting twist near the end. I would definitely read all the other books in the series before this one, which I plan on doing soon, to better understand this group's dynamic. And I'm really interested in Teri and Logan's backstory.

Chloe blames Ian for the death of her brother even though she knows it is not his fault. And Ian doesn't push. He loves her and is willing to wait for her.

Her brother's will leads them and their group of extended family on a weekend away to complete a bucket list in his honor. And before the weekend is over they've rekindled their relationship.

Then they all receive unexpected news.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. This is the 4th book I the Birch Police Department series and each book cs. Be read as a standalone. This book is a brother's best friend romance with the best HEA ending.
Chloe has just lost her brother overseas and blames all his friends for coming home and letting him do one more tour without them. They were supposed to keep each other safe. Now she can't stand to be around any of them. Including her fiance/brother's best friend Ian.
Ian has loved Chloe all his life. He knew she would be the girl he would marry. And right now he would do anything to help ease the pain she is in.
Get out those tissues you will need them. I loved this book and WOW what an ending. I absolutely can't wait for a certain someone's book. I hope he get his HEA. He definitely deserves it.

This is a Birch Police Department love story for Ian and Chloe. This one will have you crying and your heart breaking in one then one place in this story and just when the healing time is over and everything seems to be going back to normal the twist will come and everything will go upside down and you will cry then scream then cry some more but keep going this story is worth it just like all the ones before it are. I loved this one more for the emotional roller coaster and the true love these two go through to come out on the other side so much more stronger and whole. I loved this book and can not wait for the next one.

Break It Down by author April Canavan was a beautifully written story that gives you all the feels; you’ll experience many different emotions throughout this book along with a few unexpected twists. Ian and Chloe’s love was tested when her brother didn’t come home from a mission and they must overcome broken promises to get their HEA. I loved Ian who never gave up on Chloe no matter what. He helped her find her inner strength to live and love. The witty dialogue and banter among all the characters was top notch. And as always, Nox is a scene stealer whenever he’s in them and I simply adore him as well as little Bee. This series just keeps getting better and better and I’m really looking forward to reading the next book.

Another great book to this series, it was an emotional journey for Chloe as her brother Kevin is lost overseas, her grief pushes Ian and her brothers friends away from her because of it. Ian doesn’t give up hope that he and Chloe are still meant to be, therefore his love really shows in this story. When Chloe and Ian’s group of friends find out Kevin left a will stating that they’re doing a bucket list together, relationships start to renew and their bonds as friends become deeper as a family. There was also some very funny and heartfelt moments between all characters and some good suspense thrown in that left me pondering at times if I was right or not.

Break it Down is gut-wrenching, soul-destroying perfection. Every single story in the Birch Police Department series has brought me to my knees, but none more so than Ian and Chloe's story. This is a story of a couple on the verge of marrying but whose dreams are torn apart by one knock on the door. I was so impressed how April Canavan, portrayed this couple and the friends around them when dealing with their tragedy. I did not see the twist in the tail coming so engrossed was I with the storyline unfolding before me. But if you like a bit of sizzle with your tissues, don't worry we have plenty of that in this story.

Just brilliant and I highly recommend that you not only read this story but the whole series. A must-read for 2021!

April had me crying in my Kindle on this one. Yes, we get the banter, the comedic relief, and the steam from BPD and their ladies and partners, but Ian and Chloe was a emotional adventure. This book gave us a love that started before they knew what love was, best friend sister, a total shredding and having to be put back together. What you get in Birch is family. Family that will call you out on your bull and make you see the error of your ways, family that isn’t always blood, but will comb the pits of hell for you. That family is what kept Ian and Chloe grounded in and through their grief. Here’s to that same family being there for Teri and Logan…I know they will.

This was such an emotional roller coaster!

My heart broke not only for Chloe’s loss, but also for Ian. He definitely didn’t deserve to be treated that way and he was dealing with his own guilt.

Ian was pretty much the perfect man! Sweet, sexy, thoughtful, patient and understanding! A girl couldn’t ask for more! I love the friendship between him and all the other guys. They seriously crack me up!!!

Kevin stole my heart! How can a character that’s not really there make you fall head over heels for them? Great writing, that’s how!

I honestly can’t wait to see what happens with Logan and Terri!
