David Michie is the internationally best-selling author of The Magician of Lhasa series, The Dalai Lama's Cat series, and several non-fiction titles on meditation and Buddhism. His books are published in over 30 languages and 50 countries.
Fourth book in the series, I couldn’t wait to read this book and the continuing story of the Dalai Lama's Cat, HHC (His Holiness's Cat) or Little Snow Lion amongst many of the names given. Although this book is fiction there is a true underlying message of communicating kindness and practising mindfulness using the ‘Four Paws of Spiritual Success’.
The book is heartfelt and, at a time when all we hear is negative news and turmoil, it’s so refreshing to read something that filled me with warmth and kept me smiling from start to finish. There are tools inside the book for personal growth as well as humour and lifelike characters we’ve all no doubt met!
Whether you want to learn about mindfulness, are spiritual, a cat lover or want to read something to warm you on the inside, then this book is definitely for you.
David Michie is a wonderfully gifted writer who effortlessly captures cattitude as we have come to understand it and, if like me, you adore cats, then you will love learning kindness through the eyes of HHC – a role model for my three!
The most beautiful creature that ever lived..mousie tung (don't tell her I used this name :)) ...HHC...is back and I was so excited to read this 4th book in the series! I can tell you it did not disappoint. The teachings on wisdom, compassion and letting go are given so wonderfully in a subtle, simple, clear, humerous and delightful way. I feel very blessed to have read the book before it was released.. and I have ordered a copy already. Perfect timing for festive season gifts! If you haven't read the other books in this series, you have missed out, the characters in these stories are real and complex and their learnings are our learnings as the readers.
Thank you for the wonderful stories and teachings!
Enjoyable easy read. The Dalai Lama’s cat takes us on his adventures while providing lessons on lovingkindness, compassion, and Tibetan Buddhist wisdom.
So… Where to start ? First of all, this book was offered to me. Why ? I don’t know. But i do know that i’m really not used to read such books, and that’s why i was quite sceptical about this. I mean, im more of a pragmatic person so all this Buddhist and spiritual stuff isn’t really my thing. Besides, why offer me volume 4 when I've never read the previous ones? That's a question I'll never know the answer to. Anyway, I tried to read it. And i finished it. Proof that it wasn’t so bad. But it wasn’t that good either. And for people who are into those stuffs, i get the hype. I mean, the narrative from the cat's point of view is a very interesting way to introduce these spiritual themes and self-development, very good for beginners. But unfortunately, I wasn’t drawn to it. So that’s why I’ve put 3 stars. It is really a personal opinion, from someone who had not interest in what the book talked about, but still a bit open-minded to read it. (God, idk why I wrote that much. There is really no point but whatever.) I guess my closing sentence would be that if you are starting to delve into spirituality, Buddhism, and self-development, this is the book for you. (my fingers hurt)
The latest Dalai Lama's cat novel is utterly charming. Little Snow Lion (one of her many titles) learns new lessons in her travels around Dharamsala. Among them she learns the value of being Therapy Cat, giving of herself without expecting anything in return.
She also learns that her rival Tabby is a homeless orphan just as she was, and learns the value of loving kindness toward strangers.
The four Buddhist precepts taught in the book are brought through in the loving voice of a little Himalayan cat. The book made me smile many times, and reminded me to seek better understanding in numerous situations.
I've been waiting, hoping for the next opportunity to continue my journey in Buddhism through the eyes of one of the Dali Lama's closest companions, HHC (His Holiness' Cat.) She makes me laugh, even as I see the relevance of her struggles in my own life. For me, the author has captured the joy of learning by creating characters I care about and love spending time with, over and over again. His audible version perfectly captures the impish "voice" of this special cat.
The Four Paws of Spiritual Success is an important continuation into our understanding of Buddhist teachings, and like the previous books a joyful, fun journey. All are highly recommended.
This book makes Tibetan Buddhism accessible to the average reader. On one level, it is a delightful story - the characters feel like friends and the unique perspective of the narrator (the Dalai Lama’s Cat!) keeps the storytelling basic but engaging. This is one smart cat! On another level, the basic principles of Buddhism are explained in an easy to understand way - not esoteric, but available to all of us. This is a clever book, simple but profound, with believable characters who can teach us better ways to ‘be’ in the world. A lifetime of insight delivered in a ‘user-friendly’ format!
We learn through stories. We learn when we are not the protagonist but resonate with the protagonists. When seen through the eyes of a cat the challenges to internalizing words of wisdom are much easier to process. In this wonderful fourth installment of the DLC series we see how even the seemingly most equinimital people face challenges to internal growth. Even though the previous books are not necessary to enjoy this story they do provide a deeper context to the practice of finding peace with life’s challenges.
More Buddhist theology than in previous books - but that trend has been consistent, so presumably those of us who keep coming back for more of HHC like that - but once again the wonderfully smug, feline narration of daily life at Dharamsala and the delightfully easy introduction to Buddhist principles. Delightful!
I absolutely LOVED this book! Her adventures and her steps to achieving enlightenment are amazing. David Michie transcribes in such a way that you can visualise everything that is happening. I can almost feel myself in the Himalayas!
I have thoroughly enjoyed all the prior Dalai Lama's Cat books and this one is no exception. David Michie describes the surroundings so well, I can easily see it in my mind. I have lived with many cats for many years so I feel the realness of HHC. Do yourself a favor and read this book.
Fantastic book! Really enjoyed the ongoing storyline of the main characters, and also the way how you easily learn about the concepts of Buddhism. And love the fact that it comes from a beautiful cat... Beautiful, heartwarming, uplifting and educational all in one...well worthwhile!!
Starting off the new year - and the new decade - with the magnetically charming, profound-without-being-preachy wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism, revealed through the sapphire-blue eyes of the Dalai Lama's Cat. An unsurprisingly, typically delightful addition to the series. 💖
Jeska vždycky pohladí po duši. Knihy Davida Michieho můžu vždycky a přijde mi, že přijdou vždycky i v tu správnou chvíli, kdy si potřebuju trochu urovnat hlavu. Teď ještě přečíst předchozí dva díly a budu to mít komplet!
4 paws that bring understanding, happiness, humour for all cat lovers. Yet another eye opener by the amazing David Michie...if only there were more books into the series.
Thank you, David Michie. I read "The Dalai Lama's Cat" in 2018, then "The Four Paws" some weeks ago, which changed my life. Such a cliche, I know. But, literally, yes, literally, reading this one did. All I can say is I was ready to read it, or something. I am not saying reading any or all of these four Dalai Lama Cat books will change anyone else's life—that would be silly.
I've been on a path for years, reading about Buddhism, considering myself a seeker, meditating here and there, more so when I had migraines, which was often. But something in this fourth book finally reached me. Like dominoes falling. Now I live in the present, (at least 80 percent of the time, anyway) and I am content and, yes, happy, just as HHC is. I am living it now. It's been a month and the headaches have practically disappeared. I have cut my anti-depressant in half. Will this stick? Meditation helps. I have learned a lot about myself through meditating.
I like cats. Plus the stories. Michie is an engaging writer. He brings it all home in the simplest, clearest terms that touch us all. Whether you are Catholic, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, or agnostic, you can find joy and, yes, freedom from suffering in the Dalai Lama's teachings. And chuckle at yourself along the way.
I checked. Does The Dalai Lama have a cat now? He does not. He's never home enough. But he did. He likes cats. Very much.
Whenever I need to decompress, get away from all the hubbub of the world or even things going on around me, I turned to one of the books about The Dalai Lama's Cat and I'm never disappointed. It is like reading a book with your cat beside you and a cup of coffee, or whatever is your beverage of choice.
In this book the author, through HHC (His Holiness's Cat, only one of many names she acquires), shares what it might be like if you could bask in the presence of the Dalai Lama and the peacefulness and lovingkindness he exudes. There are key themes to explore, not so much "laws" but ideas to embrace and practice in our lives in order to achieve enlightenment. It is simple but not easy.
There are a number of stories to illustrate these ideas, and they will leave you smiling, if not purring to yourself and if that isn't a great way to spend an afternoon or evening, then I don't know what is. He knows cats and I had to chuckle to myself every now and again how he (the author) uses this Cat to tell what is going on, and she is anything but humble and modest as any good cat is) The only thing that made this better with having the author read it to me himself, while I followed along on my Kindle.
It is a joy to read the ongoing spiritual journey of HHC. As in the 3 previous books the author carefully crafts buddhist teachings into the stories that are conveyed through such a beautiful cat. If you are not interested in buddhism per se do not let this put you off but perhaps instead think about the words of His Holiness the Dalai Lama who said "Don't try to use what you learn from Buddhism to be a good Buddhist; use it to learn to be a better-whatever-you-already-are". Having had the immense privilege of meeting His Holiness this summer i can only endorse the author's words that "Long after people have forgotten every word that His Holiness has said they still remember how he touched their hearts and they love him for it". The author manages to convey that same ethos through the antics of HHC and the continuing storyline of the many wonderful characters.
Cat owners will recognise quite easily some of HHC's feline traits and smile knowingly to themselves and acknowledging quietly that the author has captured the cat's personality so accurately. This is a lovely book, and a great gift for all - not just cat owners. Read and enjoy!
I adore all of David Michie's books but those in the Dalai Lama's Cat series are my favorite and the latest edition did not disappoint. The Four Paws of Spiritual Success continues the charming story of HHC, His Holiness' Cat, and continues to offer illuminating yet easy to grasp concepts of Buddhist teachings which I greatly appreciate. I take longer than usual to finish his books because I'm so frequently highlighting and underlining passages that I wish to take special note of and which I often revisit as refreshers on Buddhism.
I'm a tremendous fan and whether you are interested in Buddhism, meditation or simply want a lovely, enjoyable read, The Dalai Lama's Cat and The Four Paws of Spiritual Success is what you're looking for. I'm thrilled it's come out before the holiday season since I will be able to complete most of my gifting simply by ordering several copies of this delightful book!
So let me just first put it out there. I have been a fan of all the books in The Dalai Lama’s Cat series and when the pre-booking of this one opened up, I just went ahead and paid up. Simple. I don’t need reviews to read them. Period. So this book was a natural pick and continues from where it takes a pause in the previous (3rd one) book. This book focusses on the power of compassion and how a good teacher or even a guide can really set the course right. He or she may make u feel ‘dirty’ but that’s more of acknowledging the problem and then addressing it. The book also dwells a lot on selfless love and how it can change lives, unknowingly. And this all is delivered to you, dear reader, in a very non-preachy manner. Because HHC is not that kind of a cat and you are definitely not that kind of a reader.
Strongly recommended. Also quick tip : DONOT miss the Epilogue. No. Read it to the last page.
This book was the perfect one to read to usher in 2020. As with all of the Dalai Lama Cat books, this was a highly entertaining read with powerful messages of timeless wisdom. It was written in such a way that one does not necessarily have to read the first three books in the series to understand the characters. However, after reading this book, I have no doubt that you will want to read the first three books in the series as well. This would definitely provide more background on important characters such as Mrs. Trinci and Tenzin. This is a wonderful book and I'll look forward to the fifth book in this beautiful and important series.
Another winner from the World's Most Beautiful Cat, HHC etc. These books combine a good story, interesting characters and insights into Tibetan Buddhism in a way that is both enjoyable and educational. In this book, the 4th in the series, we discover the four cornerstones of the search for enlightenment. There's a lot to think about and it's definitely more in-depth than the earlier books. But what else would you expect from a cat who has spent the last 7 years at the feet and in the lap of HH the Dalai Lama himself? Highly recommended.
This is the 4th book in the series and I like it best, although I was inspired by the very first one I read, which happened to be book 2. If you are seeking to understand the wisdom of the ages or just like to hear about it from the perspective of the Dalia Lama's cat, you'll find this book takes you on a journey of awareness. Complex principles of Buddhist philosophy are explained through every day events in Dharamshala by the engaging characters. I hope everyone reads this book and takes the lessons to heart.
Another triumph by this cheeky, privileged and gorgeous cat called HHC (His Highnesses Cat). You are so lucky HHC to have David Michie as your scribe! This follows the story of her human friends and of course the Dalai Lama's acquaintances, set in the Himalayan city of Dharamshala. She skilfully weaves the essence of the Buddhist teachings into her story and how it slowly transforms the everyday lives of her friends, and some who are not. You may learn a lot about your own self here, without even realising it. Now you must read the other 3 books in this series.
Awesome book - you will love it. I found this book to be truly enlightening. I have read all of the books in the series and I can say whether you read them all or just this one, you will love it. I found this to be enlightening to my own life and I am truly grateful for all I have learned - not only about myself but about Tibetan Buddhism. And the story itself is truly delightful. You will love HHC and her happenings in this book.
What a delicious book! I enjoyed it so much that I am sorry to finish it! I love HHC, this wise and lovely cat. David Michie did it again. He writes about buddhism in a very simple but not simplistic way. The content of this book touched me deeply and it will help to deepen my practice. Thank you David Michie for this gift. Thank you also for the opportunity to be in your first readers club. Congratulations!
This forth story involving HHC is wonderful, enlightening and insightful.
David writes his characters in a way that makes them come to life on the pages, you’re able to feel all their emotions whilst reading and they stay with you for days afterwards.
