A Case Of Longing

Rate this book
The one person she wants is completely off-limits to her...

Chicago detective Rose Harper prides herself on her professionalism while on duty—despite secretly being in love with her partner and best friend, Eithan Reed. Even though they’ve worked together for a decade, Rose has managed to hide her feelings for Eithan, terrified that he doesn’t return them. After all, he’s been married since they met, and she’s married to her job. And cops don’t date their partners.

But her desire won’t go away, and now Eithan is single.

To further test her resolve, they’ve landed their biggest case yet, and the addition of a beautiful FBI agent into the mix only makes things worse. Rose must navigate the complications of the case and her romantic competition to save not only the victims, but her partnership—and hope her heart survives the hardest trial she’s ever faced.

From Amazon reviews: ★★★★★ “This book goes deep in the volumes of unrequited yet not so unrequited love between two people who are so closely bonded in a friendship that slowly builds into more. An immense depth of emotion, passion, sexual tension, danger, and heartache jump from the pages throughout the whole book which keeps you hooked reading and inside the mind of Rose, the main character.”

Stars: ⭐ 5.0 ⭐

Main characters:
- Rose: ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
- Eithan: ❣️❣️❣️❣️

POV: The story is told from Rose's POV, in third person... P. S. We got bonus POV from Eithan, but it was too short. I really missed his voice and his POV in this book... I love dual POVs, but writing here was good, so it's ok.

Romance: I love slow-burn and unrequited love stories. And when there is Romantic Suspense, Detectives and FBI too, than it's totally my cup of tea.

Chemistry: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

OW/OM drama: Yes, yes. Big OW drama and mild OM drama (almost nothing)... We only miss Eithan's POV here. Than it would be everything evan better and more exciting. 😁

Love triangle: No

Cheating: No

Triggers: No

Funny moments: No

Sad moments: It's unrequited love, so it's sad...

Favorite characters: Rose. She is strong woman and a good Detective.

The ending: Happy ending

Eithan: ..."Tell me how to make this right!"

Rose: ..."And you're probably in the wrong room now, because your girlfriend is in one of the next rooms and I don't know ehat you're doing here."

Eithan: "She is not my girlfriend."

Rose: "So, your fuck buddy, whatever."

Eithan: "Why do you care so much, Rosie? If this is only about the case and I've already admitted my fault in it, twice, if this is the whole truth, than why does it matter?... Because it's not, is it?"

Rose: "It is about the case!"

Eithan: " Not entirely and we both know it."

Rose: "So, if you know it already, what do you need me to tell you?"

Eithan: "That it wasn't a mistake."

Rose: "You said it yourself. It was never a good idea."

Eithan: "But I never said I regratted it. "

If you've ever been in love with someone you couldn't have, you will feel this book almost physically. There were so many familiar emotions and so many times I just wanted to scream: "Yes! I remember that feeling! I was there once!" The way Rose constantly moves between love, anger, disappointment and downright hopelessness is sometimes painful to read, but it's also incredibly satisfying in the end.
I love Lily Baines' writing. Her Riviera View series is a perfect example of her talent, and I've wanted to read A Case of Longing for a long time. I realize that it will not appeal to everyone. It is a story about two homicide detectives who are in love with each other, but because they work together and have complicated pasts (especially Eithan), they can't seem to find their way to each other. They argue, make stupid decisions, and their road to a happy ending is almost too long. But that's life - we don't always get what we want when we want it. I highly recommend this book, because even though it is full of sorrow, pain and heartache, it is also a beautifully written story of two people who, despite their desperate attempts to fight their feelings, cannot deny the pull between them.

I could not put this down!! Yes I started on the 13th, but work got in the way and I didn’t get very far. However, Saturday was spent reading the majority and finishing it! Lily writes just beautifully. She makes you feel so hard! She puts you right in the shoes of the characters. Lily is a one-click author for me!

Rose and Eithan have been work partners for 10 years and Rose has loved Eithan just as long but he has been off limits until now. While trying to solve a case, Rose has to work through her secret feelings for Eithan as well as keeping her position in the precinct. I just had to finish it to know what happened!! Great story Lily!

Loved it! The tensions and emotions are well done, as well as the build up. The characters feel real and flawed, which is really important in a book, in my opinion. I loved Rose, she's very relatable in my eyes, and such a good character! Would highly recommend if you're looking for a good slow-burn romance story (my personal favourite)! x

Steam 🔥🔥🔥☄️ (0-5) Not a lot but on the job and regardless of relationship

What I’m Starry-Eyed Over
🤩 Workplace romance, forbidden romance—so much steamy tension between the MCs.
🤩 Chicago PD detectives—Rose Harper and Ethan Reed are such badass and big-hearted MCs.
🤩 If you are a fan of steamy romance suspense, especially books like Julie James’ FBI/US Attorney series, the I highly recommend this book to you. The suspense/detective storyline is so interesting.
🤩 If you like whiskey (scotch) just a warning that you’ll want some when Ethan pulls out some little bottles in the middle of the book. Did I mention the steamy tension? Let’s just say it starts to feel like frustration. 😜🥵

What I’m Wishing/Dizzy About:
💫 The miscommunication is strong and long with this story—so much longing for them to be together.
💫 A little bit of love triangle vibes.
💫 I’m greedy for the physical closeness (steam, spice, sexy times) after the waiting and the drama.

Didn’t Work for Me

This book, unfortunately, read very awkwardly to my inner ear. Some of this may be because the story is told in third person present. I'm never a fan of the present tense in any fiction as I think it can sometimes create problems with showing relative past, present, and future. And I believe the author did get some of that mixed up in this book, sometimes making it hard to figure out the time frame of what precisely she was talking about. The book also had a bit of an information job at the beginning, which I never like to see in any fiction story. There's always time, whether a book is a novella or a full-length novel, to deftly interweave the characters’ pasts into the story. I also thought that the way the heroine acted at times just didn't seem in line with her being a tough cop. All in all, I did not enjoy this book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

"A Case of Longing" was an enjoyable read. The plot of longing for her partner throughout the novel piqued my interest. I kept wondering if Rose and Eithan, the main characters, would have a love connection. The double-layered plot seemed plausible and very interesting. The author's descriptions helped to build the suspense throughout. This narrative was well worth my time to read it.

Judging by the summary, it should have been everything I ever searched for in a romance book. So I was horribly disappointed when the story has proven to be dull and the heroine annoying and one dimensional. Oh well.

Another heroine wasting her life. At least give her a life while she’s waiting…not just married to her job. I find these characters tragic nothing romantic about this at all.
