Desert Homesteaders #1

Settling the Alphas

Rate this book
Fall in love with a quirky mixed-shifter pack who live off the grid and always have each other’s backs.

By-the-book correctional officer Niles Ford has been resisting his fated mate, Kyle Jones. After all, how could two alphas ever make sense? Even a sunshine boy like Kyle couldn’t fill Niles’s need for an heir… although the silly quokka shifter does know how to make him smile. The fact that his inner puma is yowling for Niles to claim their mate isn’t helping matters.

They’re both dancing around each other when a random omega prisoner turns out to be the piece they’ve been missing… the last part of the puzzle that will make them whole. Before Kyle and Niles can claim Major Lawrence P. Woodlawn and begin their happy ever after, they find themselves on the run from a gaggle of goose shifters who have decided that Larry belongs to them.

Join the trio as they hit the road in a lifesize Barbie-mobile to claim Niles’s new position as pack alpha for a small pack in Arizona… along with an intrepid pair of senior citizens who should never be taken seriously. The only problem is… before they can get to their homestead and meet the pack, the five of them must first escape the clutches of those danged geese who just won’t give up.

This m/m/m romantic comedy is the first in a new adventure series. This world contains mpreg, but won’t have a birth in every book due to the short timelines. Be prepared for side-splitting laughs, shifter on shifter violence, a group of people who know that family always comes first, and all the feels you’d expect from a Susi Hawke original.

I'm a total fan of M/PREG Paranormal Romances, first and foremost as a reader. I'm excited to share my own omegaverse(s) with you. What's not to love about adorable Omegas and the Alpha men who love them? If I'm not writing about men sporting baby bumps, I'm definitely reading about them!

I'm a native of Las Vegas, NV, so I'm pre-wired to love everything weird ~ although I don't find any kind of love to be weird. I'm a cis woman who's been happily married to the same lovable lug for 18 years. We have a 16yr old son, well, at least I think we do? Either that, or we have a ghost that eats all our food and uses up all wifi playing xbox while screaming into a headset.

As a new author, it's been amazing to find the amount of support that I've been given from readers and my fellow authors. Feel free to message me, I love to chat with fellow readers. Am I a reader? Heck yeah! In fact, I'm never certain that I can completely trust an author who isn't a fellow bibliophile.

I will try to update here when I'm doing promotional parties & chats. I usually do those on Facebook. If you haven't already signed up for my newsletter, you should totally do it! I only send out NL's to announce new releases or important announcements. I also like to note in my NL what I'm currently reading along with a cover shot and the link for anyone who is interested.

I look forward to interacting with everyone here!

This was part of the huge Audible sale (in the US, not sure if it’s anywhere else)

Super short to give it a proper rating. But Larry, Niles and Kyle were cute, but wanted more backstory. Also very very instalove haha

The way the bonding in this story happened was different from other shifter bonding. It was blood bonding rather than biting the scent area.

Now on to book two!

The first book in Susi Hawke's Desert Homesteaders, Settling the Alphas is sweet and so much fun to read. There's a great range of characters (at which Susi Hawke usually excels) and it's non-stop action, and a few clever plot twists.

The audio version is performed by Drew Bacca who does a fantastic job. He truly brings these guys to life, and adds a few accents I haven't heard him do before. Mr. Bacca's range is impressive.

This was my first book by Susi Hawke. It was a cute story, but it just didn’t excite me. I finished it, but doubt if I’ll read any more books in this series. She’s written a great many books so I’ll check out sometime different next time.

This is very much a typical Susi Hawke sweet, easy story, this time featuring MMM. As two men who work together and both know they are fated mates, neither of them have brought it up because they are both Alphas. Two alphas together? When life ends up bringing them together with a third mate, an Omega, they drop everything and start on a journey to protect him... and mate, of course.

Entertaining, a fun accent, and a sweet love story.

If Niles can compel people to do what he wants, then there was no apparent need to run, or to make his boss forget him, which will cause problems if he needs a reference in the future.

Also, why do so many books about gay men feature people working in law enforcement? (Rhetorical question. It's because the writers aren't gay men)

Charming and adorable, with a surprising amount of action packed into this short novella, Susi Hawke’s newest shifter omegaverse series has all the classic Hawke elements that makes her books so addictive. Niles and Kyle are both alpha shifters who are fated mates. They know they are fated mates, but they keep tiptoeing around that fact until the fates dump their fated omega mate right in their laps. Soon the alphas, with their new omega, and two zany friends, find themselves on a road trip of a lifetime as they flee from a deranged shifter-geese flock and drive towards their new home out in the desert.

This novella is pure entertainment with a liberal dose of humor, fluff, excitement, and delicious sex mixed altogether. The book flies by fast, but it still brings out all the warm, gooey feels that makes a Susi Hawke book so wonderful.

Drew Bacca narrates the audiobook and does a fantastic job. He has such an enjoyable and smooth tone that is perfect for narrations. He also does all the character’s voices perfectly and consistently. I never had trouble knowing which character was speaking, and with all the different characters in this book that was quite a feat! The audiobook production was well done and the high quality I expect from my audiobooks.

4,5*

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:
A 3,5* is clicked with a 4* but in review marked as 3,5*:

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-Away-book like ‘Jesse's Smile’ or ‘Joey’ from Angelique Jurd, ‘Save the the kids’ series
from EM Leya, ‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or ‘Liberty’ from Seth King),
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises (like most of Andrew Grey books and Davidson Kings 'Haven Hart'-series)
it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few times (most romances where you can enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader (2-3 times a year),
it's like a B

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-reader (I wouldn't recommend it heartily, but it was ok)
It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an absolute NO-GO). It's like failure in the
whole line, dismissed, repeat the class.

MORE QUOKAS!!

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you want a insta-love, witty, light hearted read this book is a great option. I loved the connection between Niles, Kyle and Larry and Dottie and Sandy totally cracked me up and just made the story that more enjoyable. Dottie and Sandy are the family they didn’t ask for but they’d do anything for their boys and vice versa. Total family goals. This book made me smile and laugh throughout which isn’t surprising as that’s usually the case with Susi’s books and her twisted sense of humour shines through which is great. I thought it was cool that Kyle is a Quokka shifter as it’s completely different than the usual animals represented in other shifter books like wolves, bears, pumas and dragons. I thought it was interesting that some most of the shifters in this universe also have added gifts like Kyle’s gift of healing and Dottie’s gift of premonition. I liked meeting Silas and I’m looking forward to reading his story and seeing how Niles, Kyle and Larry are doing with their leadership role of their new pack and the pending arrival of their kid/s. I’d recommend this book, series and author to everyone.

2.9 ⭐s Hard to Get Into
I tried to read this series previously because I really enjoyed reading fated mates books by Susi Hawke. A few months ago I read the Northern Lodge Pack, Northern Lodge Den, the West Coast Wolves, and Waking the Dragons. I couldn't get enough of Susi then I ran into this story. I wanted to like it. But I wasn't drawn into the story the way I had been with her other wonderful series.

I started this book again today (Saturday the 9th). I kept both wanting to stop and wanting to persist to the end. I'd forgotten it was a MMM romance so that was surprising. The Chase and slaughter of the omegas enemies including both geese shifters and non shifters, the crazy antics of Dorothy and sandy. The confusing and non-use of pronouns until finally reaching the destination a small desert town full of quirky characters.

I feel a sense of accomplishment that I did finally finish this book - though I can't swear I didn't skim through some of the sex scenes. I really wanted to read Book Three but there were too many references to the characters & situations in Books 1 and 2 that I felt compelled to read this First One in the series

This just wasn't for me. I kept waiting for things to happen, for their relationship to develop and then it was suddenly over while still leaving me bored and feeling too disconnected from the characters. By the time I wanted to dnf it, my Kindle app said there were only 45 minutes left and so I powered through...

Personally, I couldn't distinguish very well between the perspectives of Larry, Kyle and Niles and was a bit sad that their "romance"/getting to know each other didn't really show who they are as people and what they would want from a relationship. There was no internal struggle, only the external conflict of "oh boy, look at these annoying, entitled geese that go to way too much trouble to get their shifter gadget back which they could easily and more cheaply replace by electronics". Yeah, I didn't buy that. But I'm a sucker for slow burn which just means that the whole insta-version of fated mates is generally a hard sell for me and might work better for other readers.

What I did love was how considerate the guys were trying to be over Sandy's pronouns, at least from my perspective as a white cis woman that still has a lot of re-learning to do.

Another book knocked out of the park by Susi! This is a short-ish quick-ish read that stole my heart. She is amazing in her sensitivity to the LGBTQ community and her sensational magic of having you fall head over heel in love with all the "good guys" while giving a fist pump for gittin' all the "bad guys".
All of her brilliant humor is here (with plenty to spare) I kept expecting a few 'horny unicorns' to pop out lol
And can we just take more than a moment to embrace a QUOKKA!!! My ever most favorite critter in the entire world!! Only Susi knows how to make a cute, pudgy, rodent totally badass! I love that!!!
This new shifter world is exciting with the special 'gifts' they have, way to add an extra element of fun fun fun.
The triad group of mates is perfectly written with quirks, weaknesses and super strength to love. All the gang that's with them bring more than a little hilarity and makes us old ladies know we don't need to sit in rockers and knit until we hit the grave. We can pack heat with the best of them and give you sass till the sun comes up!

I debated less stars but it was cute…really it was a super quirky, somewhat riotous adventure tale… just NOT really much of a romance. More like ‘hi! I’m your mate! Nice to meet you! Let’s go knot up so we’re mates for life then we can get to know each other later (like after the book is over, lol).’ Meanwhile they are traveling with a wild crazy pair of Peacock shifters and running from a Gaggle of Geese. Um, yup it was as ridiculous as it sounds.

First time read author and while it was a fun, super short read, it just wasn’t enough of, well…anything. Not enough romance and definitely no where near enough steam (it’s like crazy over the top dp menage but it’s over & done in a page…like just enough detail to get us wanting more then, bam it’s over). I felt like there wasn’t enough time to get to know each character before they were on the run and we lose all sense of character development.

While I do love short story length and quirky, funny stories, this just was an all around miss for me personally, but I can definitely see why it would be popular.

Too many charactertures

Sometimes this author's work hits for me. It hits that spot between funny and sweet with enough sustained tension to make it interesting. But sometimes there isn't one character who seems authentic and the pacing is off. That's this one. You don't have to wait for anything or give up anyone. In the first pages the old lady who is dying lets Kyle talk her into a long trip in an RV, then heals her off bronchitis and a heart condition about an hour into the trip. Kyle and Niles know they're fated mates, but don't talk about it until their third shows up. Only that's basically the third thing that happens in the story. So, no waiting there. The whole book is more of a long short story than a short novella. There's no point in wishing they'll have X, Y, or Z. Give it a few pages and they will. But it's hard to care, because you don't really know the characters anyway. They're not at all developed.

Audiobook review:
Performance – 5
Story – 4
Overall – 5

Great narration and a really good story.

I haven't listened to a lot of books performed by Drew Bacca but I have loved all of them that I have. He does amazing voices and accents for the many different characters in this story.

Susi Hawke has written a great start to this new series that has lots of comedic elements. Drew Bacca's timing in some of these really funny scenes is perfect. This is a short but captivating listen and I'm really looking forward to more in this series.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

This was a short audiobook, almost 3 hours long, fast-paced, action-packed and really fun! Dotty and Sandy were a hoot and our three MCs were really well suited to one another. Niles was the serious Alpha, Kyle was the easygoing Alpha, and Matthew, the Omega pursued by a gaggle of crazy geese-shifters, who is the third in their triad.

Drew Bacca did an awesome job with all the accents, which I already knew from listening to him narrate the Hollydale Omegas series, but doing a book like this, with so much dialogue and not feel like you don't know who's speaking, takes series talent.

This was a great start to the series and I'm already looking forward to more. Super recommendable!

*WARNING* contains adult m/m situations
Sandy and Dottie are super great characters! Those two make the whole story more enjoyable. I hope this is one of those series that included the prior characters because it would be a shame to loose these two so soon. A quokka? I'm not sure I spelled that right, but I'm going to look it up because it sounds adorable! I like that there are new shifter animals in this story too. It's A great story and the villains gave me a little chuckle because, let's face it, even without being half human, they can be Barry creatures. This short book is most definitely worth reading.

O! M! F! G! Susi has created another wonderful world and fascinating characters for us. Niles and Kyle have been dancing around each other for months but finding their third in Larry sets things in motion. A wild, crazy ride in a Barbie pink RV with a foul-mouthed psychic and her flamboyant BFF, a gaggle of vengeful goose shifters, and a destination to their new pack set the stage. My giggles were only interrupted when I burst out laughing full force.
Susi, you have outdone yourself. Take a bow.
A standing ovation for a fantastic first book for this highly recommended author

Ok

I normally don't read poly book because it never feels equal. I can't really stand that in a supposed romance, and that's kinda how I felt here with Kyle. Everything that happened in this book could have been done without him. Yeah he was the one who knew Dottie but honestly Dottie could see the future so everything could have still worked out with him. It definitely felt like Larry and Niles from there point of view didn't really need and only barely wanted him. This book was so short or "fast paced" as the author said that we didn't get to really know these characters and in the end Kyle for me felt unimportant.

Cute New series

This series starts with Niles and Kyle knowing each other and knowing that they are mates but not acknowledging it. Kyle is a nurse and his favorite patient is Dottie. Niles is a correction officer who brings injured people to see Kyle. One of the injured patients is Larry, the Omega to the two Alpha mates.
This story is funny and sweet and Is a quick read about how the three of them get together. Add in Dottie and her friend Sandy and it's a great funny first book.

I know that when I am looking for a book that I am sure, I am going to love, I simply need to read and re-read any of Ms Hawke's books. So when I found this book 1 in her new series, I couldn't stop myself and reading it almost immediately. It featured a whole new world of amazing characters, wild adventures and a MMM romance. The plot is hilarious and sweet, with a little bit of conflict and action, and the appearance of some different types of shifters like a cute quokka alpha or evil gooses. Loved It!

Fast paced rom-com with quirky shifters

As the title says, this book is an endearingly sweet rom-com that involves an Alpha puma, healer Alpha quokka, a wolf Omega, two fabulously drama queen peacocks and a gaggle of evil geese moonshiners. A cross-country road trip in a glittery Barbie RV and a group of homesteaders needing an alpha, and more puns than should be legal! 😁 This is a fun read that will have you smiling and wondering just what's more mischief this misfits pack can get up to. Can't wait to read the next book on the series!

Gotta love those shifters!

This is looking to be another good series. I totally enjoyed this story and can't wait for the next book. Ms. Hawks has a way of bringing her characters to life so much that you can pretty much see them in your imagination. She always creates a good storyline with a little mystery, a little angst and drama, and just enough naughty bits to make it fun. I do love a happy ending.

Love this author

This book (like all of Susi's) is fast paced and precious. Gives you just enough excitement to not put the book down without getting tired. I can usually finish one of these books in a single sitting!

The idea of these macho alphas being chased by geese is hilarious as I know from experience how psychotic geese can be when they start to chase you!!

An amazing road trip filled with crazy characters that pluck at your heart strings and make you belly laugh!!

Sweet summer read

This was a hook you from the beginning fast-paced sweet read. Larry, Kyle, Niles, Dottie and Sandy are so well written that you cannot help but fall in love with all of them. I seriously was not expecting to see Geese shifters and OMG what a crazy mess that was. This was really worth the time and even it there's a cliff hanger, which I despise I felt like I wasn't left fully hanging and could wait to read the next book.

I don't like to write really poor reviews but this time I couldn't help myself. I had to stop reading at about the 40% because it was unreadable. I'm sorry, I can usually go for a bit of fluff but the Aussie was just horrible.

And what the hell was the swipe at the native peoples?! "Aborigines" is outdated and offensive and not lighthearted or joking.

That was my cue to get the out.

Very enjoyable read with great characters who were quirky, humorous, and very supportive. The story was imaginative, especially when it came to the attacking geese, which I found to be truly unique. It was well written with such a cute plot and a bit of passion. Overall, this was a fun and intriguing story. =)

Great Series start!

Fast-paced and full of humor and heartwarming moments. Kyle, Niles, and Larry come together with their hilarious adopted grandmother and uncle to form a family and the foundation of what I anticipate to be great pack filled with quirky, fun characters. Kudos Susi Hawke, I look forward to the rest of the series!

Awkward to read and uninteresting

This book is not well written and often hard to follow. Poor grammar and sentence structure make it difficult to read. The plot is not original nor very fleshed out. The main characters are not fleshed and that makes them hard to relate to or care about.
